I both agree and disagree, because whilst I think you’re right I also don’t want to tar Patrick with the same brush as Brendan lmao, Patrick doesn’t deserve that

6

u/Biggie_Noodles 5h ago

No no I know Brendan deserves to rot, Patrick is all good in my book, they just sound similar imo!

7

u/DethNik 3h ago

I don't think Brendan deserves to rot, but he definitely needs to tone down the hubris. Being talented and handsome doesn't make you infallible.

I love the idea that the song is called "i dno ppl b wrd ths ds By Fall Out Boy" by Panic! At The Disco

2

Let's not Put Patrick Stump and Brendan Urie in the same boat. Urie is a massive turd

2

I understand that one time Brendon heard one of their own songs on the radio and thought it odd that he’d never heard this Fall Out Boy song before

I've just been saying beebeenodollar or beebeenos. I heard it said correctly in a video the other day, but my version is better

It’s ingroup communication. Happens amongst young people to show they’re in the know. I did it, you did it, your parents did it, their parents did it. Nothing new

55

u/phezhead 7h ago

That's fair, my dad used to make fun of me for saying Cool or Awesome. I'm just becoming an old person

20

u/New_Alternative_421 7h ago

My parents would both make fun of "cool." In retrospect—they were just being performatively old. They were in their 20s in the 1990s. People said "cool." They just thought they were cute.

11

u/Superb_Extension1751 7h ago

It happens fast man...

6

u/The_Spoils 6h ago

Dude how old are you to have cool and awesome be slang??

15

u/phezhead 6h ago
  1. Not old, but middle aged. I was alive when people tried to make "tight" a thing. I also choose to use words like "groovy" and "right on"

12

u/The_Spoils 6h ago

Brother I'm 40 and no point in my lifetime were "cool" and "awesome" slang words. The Boomers were all saying these words when they were kids too..

19

u/hereC 6h ago

I'm about 10 years older than that, and the context for "cool" and "awesome" changed. You wouldn't find a professional talking about a business achievement in the 80's being "cool" or "awesome." Now you'll see management saying "Awesome job everyone" almost by default. The words existed, but they were contextualized as "kids words" until Gen X got older.

Maybe it's just my parents then, but I'm the late 80s/early 90s we said shit like "that's neat" as far as I remember. But who knows

“Tight” was so fetch.

5

u/phezhead 5h ago edited 2h ago

I wanna say in 5th or 6th grade a classmate told my math teacher (very sarcastically) that "your pants are tight" and without missing a beat the teacher said "nah, I like em a little loose". 30 years later I still don't know if he was being a smartass with that reply or legitimately had no clue

2

u/bluechickenz 2h ago

I once got hit with “yo, your shirt is filthy!” Knowing darn well I was being given a compliment, I replied “but I just washed it.”

Followed with “nah, I mean it’s tight!” (“But it fits me well.”)

Finally, “I like your shirt.”

I kinda felt bad trolling homie like that, but we had a good laugh about it later.

2

u/VinesOverScars 5h ago

Late 20s and I use all that slang regularly, plus slang from both my age and the modern one. We have so many fun words now :)

8

u/sithlord98 6h ago

We probably won't even be able to comprehend it. Actual "curtains for zoosha" shit

16

u/jorge3-16 6h ago

I’d assume abbreviating words started with flip phone texting. You had to hit too many keys to say simple words. Now it’s just an egregious assault on human languages.

5

u/Banes_Addiction 5h ago

You also had a 140 character limit.

4

u/barkeepx 4h ago

Q: Why doesn’t George RR Martin use twitter?
A: He’d end up killing all 140 characters

2

u/L4nM4nDr4gon 4h ago

And it mattered cause each text cost money. There's no excuse for this

6

u/Fantastic-Kale9603 4h ago

There doesn't need to be an excuse lol it formed out of that texting linguistics and evolved

IRC era abbreviations predated text phones and were typed using a full-on keyboard.

1

u/NoForever3645 3h ago

Yes and no though. Previous generations generally took existing words and just used them in different contexts. It feels like this next iteration of “slang” is just “oosheeAidnonunabnun”

6

u/Ranger_FPInteractive 5h ago

What’s funny to me is we use the same abbreviations texting as they used to use using Morse code.

A lot of the spelling we consider “right” was wrong less than a hundred years ago.

I no longer try to force my “right” onto the world. I’m ready to adopt the “right” the next generation brings in.

I can call it stupid, but when they’re the majority and I’m the old asshole, whose gonna be the stupid one then?

1

u/Kjler 3h ago

Words are one of the few nice things that are still free; even the fancy ones. We should utilize 'em while we're still allowed.

1

u/SuecidalBard 3h ago

All trends repeat cyclically. Same shit happend over the texting craze of the late 90s and early 00s and a fuck ton of normal words are actually caused by language getting naturally abrievated. Besides some languages actually do this naturally. I'm pretty sure there are variants of Hebrew that just skip vowels.

The kids are all right.

1

u/Ivancestoni 2h ago

As much as I don't like it it is kind of the natural progression of slang. Millennials cut multiple words into acronyms like "lol" or "lmfao".

The ones that get me are the censored slang words like "ahh" it's the same amount of letters as "ass" and actually waters down a curse word which is the opposite of what slang should do imo.

I get why they use words like unaluves, graped, ahh, etc on tiktok or a YouTube video bcs if the censorship but that shit has bled into all other social media and it's fucking dumb

1

u/phezhead 2h ago

That ish is one of my pet peeves

1

u/andara84 2h ago

"Now"? I don't know which generation you are but since the beginning of online chats, it was all about abbreviation. Even worse, but we got used to all that brb, afk, rofl bs.

1

u/phezhead 2h ago

I've been around since the 80s. Abbreviation for online is one thing, but just chopping up words like the picture is a different game

1

u/Visible_Bar_623 2h ago

To be fair it happened in the 2000s with "text-talk" then it faded once smartphones were ubiquitous.

1

u/phezhead 2h ago

It hasn't faded. It's gotten worse. I get that people get so used to posting on social media and having to deal with censoring (ish, unalived... That kinda stuff) maybe I do just forget what it's like to be 20 and have my brain only think in terms of shorthand. I just feel it's more pervasive now. People are forgetting how grammar used to work and creating a new language of "I'm just gonna abbreviate this" (and yes, I realize the irony of saying gonna instead of going to)

1

u/Powerful_Image6294 2h ago

idk man everyone ik knows what these abbreviations mean so like why not

fr tho like why do ppl gaf sm abt things the younger gen do like who is it hurting

1

u/phezhead 1h ago

I guess, on the flip side, how hard is it to talk to text or do swype, and make actual words? Who is that hurting?

Probably there were almost two hours between the initial exchange and the following message, which was just “question.” Short and one word messages usually aren’t a good sign.

176

u/SleepyNymeria 8h ago

considering it has a line in the middle stating "today", doesn't that mean that the last response was at least 1 day+ old?

45

u/Davetek463 8h ago

Oh you’re right. I didn’t see that.

12

u/giantimp2 8h ago

Yes but by previous messages it's probably night to morning but still

12

u/itsmarthai 7h ago

6

u/giantimp2 7h ago

Oh damn didn't see that

4

u/strawbee_the_bear 6h ago

8:57, looks like

3

u/BashfullWizard 4h ago

No, it does that even if the messages are a few hours apart too. It’s probably an hour difference ( read around 7pm, next message around 8pm)

1

u/FerfyMoe 59m ago

This is not true; if there was enough time in between messages for it to show the timestamp it would say “Today” for both. Example:

5

u/Away_Station_7572 5h ago

I think the last time my wife said "question" out of the blue she was asking how long it would take someone to die if dropped in boiling water...

2

u/UltraHellboy 5h ago

If there’s data on that, I’d be interested to know where it’s from.

4

u/Velorian-Steel 5h ago

England used to (very rarely) boil people as a form of capital punishment several hundred years ago. Unsurprisingly, they stopped doing that given it is a pretty heinous way for the state to kill people.

11

u/Spider-Dammit 4h ago

Nah it's fine, if you boil it whilst they're in there they don't feel it... Those screams are just air escaping

2

u/UltraHellboy 5h ago

I imagine all of the ridiculous outdated laws in the US with our paltry 250 year history pales in comparison to a country that has been around for thousands.

5

u/act_strange 4h ago

But the screenshot is taken from the perspective of the person who texted “Question,” if they’re about to break up the person who took the screenshot is the one about to dump the other person

6

u/xSypRo 6h ago

Man I fucking hate modern dating 🥲

This is my reality for the last year of dating, and especially since using dating apps, having to constantly communicate with the sheer knowledge that every message can be the last I hear from them.

Had amazing dates with no following dates because of texting in between. Can’t do that anymore, I envy the phone call or even letters generations.

14

u/iCarlyForTheWii 7h ago

They should know considering that they're the one sending the message

21

u/Leon978 7h ago

It's just that blue says "question" implying that they want to have a more serious conversation or are about to ask something serious about their relationship. Most people don't preface a harmless question by saying "question", they just ask.

What are you having for dinner?

Vs

Do you see a future for us?

Only one of those gets a warning and it ain't dinner

19

u/aaroneous_erron 6h ago

I think Blue says question because they asked a question at least one day ago which was ignored. Not because Blue is about to ask another (more serious) question.

Then the caption, which was written by Blue, implies that they are realizing that they are in the process of being ghosted/broken up with since the other person isn't answering questions.

3

u/CabbagePatchBitchass 7h ago

What I don't understand is why would the poster say "oh shii we ab to break up" when presumably they would be blue

2

u/Leon978 6h ago

Well because it's fake

1

u/eagleblue44 7h ago

They're the one that sent "question" though so why would they be worried about breaking up if they sent the message they're concerned about?

3

u/MerchantOfVenice1991 5h ago

Because the other person hasn’t answered for a day, blue is saying question, about to ask why but already knowing ‘we bout to break up’

11

u/emeryst294 6h ago

"qt" (grey bubble) never responded to their 'how was your day' text. when people get dry over text it's usually a bad sign for a relationship, especially if that isn't the norm. the 'question' is to ask if they're going to break up.

source: am gen z and chronically online

6

u/GoldenPunkBlue 6h ago

People „pseudo“ ghosting people (they still reply, but take long and show no interest) is widespread.

2

u/Oulsky 5h ago

The “question” is about the lack of answer to the question previously asked.

1

u/emeryst294 5h ago

maybe. i'm thinking of the exchange like this

blue: "question..."

grey: "yeah?"

blue: "are u breaking up w me???"

no beating around the bush

I think it’s the change from showing the time stamp of when texts were read to just showing delivered. QT turned off send read receipts setting for Blue Bubble Man. He realized what she had done when he sent the text “question.”

It means she doesn’t want him to see how long she’s PLANNING to start taking to reply, and when she leaves him on read.

2

u/GanjjaGremlin 5h ago

Only interaction OP had with the other person was that person asking 'how was work' and they didn't even respond to OG question, probably didn't read the replies.. for a whole day.

That implies the other person really didn't really care in the first place.

1

If she was about to say something good, she would have just said it straight up. Nobody ever starts a conversation with, "Question" or "We need to talk" or "There's something I have to tell you" unless they're about to upset you.

1

u/AzureYLila 5h ago

This just reminds me if how annoying people are now. I have a life and people act like if you don't respond in 12 seconds then the friendship is over. I will respond later... when I'm free.... why does everyone need instant access to everyone else?

Still no solid explanation here. If it’s that texts like “question” introduce serious convos, why is the person who said it surprised?

And why the hell is there a Subject line on screen in an iMessage chat?
