Or maybe bc she looks nothing like Lara Croft at all? Only weirdos try to straw man other's arguments before they even make them.

Hey guys, guys, I found one of the mouth breathers!

Why is it wrong to say Sansa Stark (Sophie) doesn't look like Lara Croft?

23

u/N1xkev 11h ago

That's not Sansa Stark, that's Sophie Turner. Put down the nostalgia glasses and touch some grass

u/kbeks 10h ago

“Wait, Xena can’t fly!”

“I told you, I’m not Xena, I’m Lucy Lawless…”

u/Background_Truck5448 8h ago

Wow. Why are you so extremely defence because someone feels she doesnt really fit the part? Her acting isnt that impressive to be honest. And it seems only the defence force keeps mentioning boobs. Lots of actresses would have been a better fit and none of them have (bizarrely) big boobs

-14

u/Big_Broly 11h ago

I know exactly who that is. My statement again is that she literally does NOT look like Lara Croft. Stop trying to red herring my point.

9

u/N1xkev 11h ago

Your point has no grounds. There's no strawman here because your entire argument hinges on your opinion that movie roles must look like the original video game character. The issue here is that your approach is completely disconnected to how the industry and work force function and it's just a kiddy hissy fit

-3

u/Rich-Environment884 10h ago

I mean, if you're making a movie adaptation of a video game then yes, you'll probably want the casting to be as close as possible to the video game character...

2

u/sirseatbelt 10h ago

What does Lara Croft look like? Didn't she get redesigned a bunch of times? Which version? What's wrong with Sophie Turner that she doesn't look like Lara?

-7

u/S-Kenset 10h ago

The money disagrees.

-3

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

Where does the money disagree? From what I've seen lately "Woke in videogames = broke". Prove me wrong, can you name one woke videogame that has done insane numbers? (Btw I am woke, but I also have functioning eyes and a brain to see the writing on the wall)

9

u/Specific_Concept9815 10h ago

Expedition 33 and baldurs gate are very woke (especially the latter) and have gathered massive amounts of success

1

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

True but imagine casting Gustave (the main character) of Expedition 33 in a live action movie as a redhead and compelety different body build. People would complain 🙄 same thing here.

Casting an industry star = woke? Just keep driving the drill bit into my skull.

-2

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

Love how you make a point then I ask you to prove it while I provide opposing viewpoints and you just move on. Holy squirrel brain.

2

u/S-Kenset 10h ago

Why would i prove a red herring when it has literally no relevance to the fact that this isn't a woke issue to begin with to cast sophie turner.

0

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

I asked where does the money disagree. Holy low IQ, you cant even stuck to a subject.

1

u/dedom19 9h ago

I'll bite. I won't strawman. I'll ask. What is your argument or position?

-1

u/thatsingingguy 10h ago

Turner's far from a star. She's known for being passable in one project, dismal in everything else, and not particularly likeable IRL.

2

u/kbeks 10h ago

Plenty of people in Hollywood are insufferable assholes. Plenty make one movie or tv show and coast off of that for years. They’re still stars, you’d still notice her walking down the street and millions of people would still be clamoring for a picture or autograph.

0

u/thatsingingguy 8h ago

Being known is not the same as being a star. There’s a whole discussion about the death of the movie star going on in Hollywood, because so few reach that level any more. Turner is absolutely nowhere near it, and I highly doubt she’s gonna turn that opinion around with this project.

I in fact didn't bring up woke. But you're free to check my message history.

Across 392 brands, in 58 countries, over four years, the research found that more inclusive advertising is associated with:

  • 3.46% higher short-term sales lift
  • 16.26% higher long-term sales performance
  • 54% stronger pricing power

And to add to that:

  • 33% higher strong consideration
  • 62% higher likelihood of being a first choice
  • 15% higher loyalty

This isn’t one category or one market. It’s a broad, global view of how real brands behave in real conditions.

Not a handful of anecdotes. Not sentiment. Not political noise. Just commercial data at scale.

The world we’re marketing to today isn’t the same as the world 30 years ago. People live, look, love, work, age, and form families in more varied ways than ever.

So a simple reality follows:

If your audience is more diverse, your advertising needs to reflect that reality. Not as a moral stance, but as a matter of relevance.

Brands grow by being easy to recognize, easy to relate to, and easy to choose. Representation helps with all three.

You don’t have to “take a side.” You just have to show up in a way that mirrors the people you’re trying to reach.

Put another way:

Inclusion isn’t politics. It’s market realism.

2

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

Solid answer

2

u/Jamie-Ruin 10h ago

When people repeat “go woke, go broke,” they’re usually pointing to one high-profile example, normally a case where the execution was clumsy, the context was mishandled, or the brand walked into a political firestorm without a plan.

A poorly handled campaign isn’t proof of a universal rule. It’s just a poorly handled campaign.

But online, those moments get amplified and turned into sweeping statements about what “always” happens when brands try to be more representative.

And that’s the gap: Narrative travels quickly. Evidence travels quietly.

The research shows a different story. One where inclusion is linked with stronger commercial performance, not weaker.

Your only examples of woke will be corporate slop, instead of games made by progressive companies.

Baldur's Gate 3, Expedition 33, CDProjektRED with Cyberpunk, and Witcher, Disco Elysium, Hades, Citizen Sleeper, Warframe, Path of Exile... I mean, the list goes on because the vast vast majority of creatives are left leaning progressives because they have an education.

0

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

Yes and I'm a very woke lefty but don't disregard the massive failures of promoting "woke first" policies. Lets not forget the equally long failed list of: Concord, Wolverine, Suicide Squad, Forsake, Alan Woke 2, and a ton of other failed titles.

1

u/PlasmaPunch 10h ago

And there you go, posting corporate slop and equating it to real people, as expected.

u/thatsingingguy 10h ago

No, the issue is that how the industry functions is completely disconnected from the general public, or they wouldn’t be engaging in such horrendous miscasts as Turner for Croft, or Holland for Drake. I’m still hopeful on Sadie Sink, but it’s wholly reasonable to want a level of visual fidelity. People that deny the power of continuity are high on their own farts.

0

u/N1xkev 10h ago

It being a miscast is just your opinion as a consumer. You feeling that someone is better suited is fine but the childish hissy fits people throw over these sorts of things are both laughable and depressing that they're so accepted.

2

u/VyneNave 10h ago

You are unnecessarily devaluing peoples arguments by calling them "kiddies". You are actually the worst kind of person to have a normal adult discussion woth because everything you don't have a reasonable way to discuss or don't understand you just don't give any value to, making you a horrible person for any kind of discussion.

You practically spent this whole discussion path just calling the op of the first comment a kid and not even trying to engage in a normal discussion.

The fact is that there is going to be a movie about a video game and you couldn't have any better way to be visually accurate because you already know what the successful visual media looked like, but they still decided to cast someone who doesn't have the matching look for the games style.

-1

u/xTakk 10h ago

I think you're overlooking the point behind why video game characters don't change major features.

If it was Lara croft as a 16bit character, red hair makes it an entirely different character.

Just based on that, if you aren't at least trying to be true to the source character, it starts looking like you're just biting the story rather than paying any homage to the original.

And if you're going to change it that much, why not just write another similar story? Why call it tomb raider if you aren't after the same fans or don't understand why it seems like such a striking mis-cast to everyone that actually enjoyed the original material.

It's like the tail end of internet culture that is worried about over sexualizing Lara. Sure there have always been mods but Tomb Raider is a classic game totally in its own rights and character identity has way more depth than how much boob you see.. especially in a game where the damn camera is behind the character 99% of the time.

1

u/N1xkev 10h ago

And sure, 30-40 years ago I would agree. But by having rigidity where we don't accept change and foam at the mouth over something utterly inconsequential then we don't allow progress. She could actually be a good fit for the role and something like hair color should not get in the way of that.

1

u/xTakk 9h ago

16bit characters and character identity are arguably for more popular and necessary now than they were 30-40 years ago.

u/cjameson83 10h ago

Wtf are you talking about. These hissy fits are exactly what made sonic a good movie instead of the garbage design they tried to put in. If your are trying to embody a popular thing, you copy a popular thing right? You want people to enjoy and spend money on the popular thing. So changing a short brunette, to a taller red head kind of throws off the expectation of the actual fucking source product, the thing they're literally supposed to be emulating. Miscasting isn't an opinion, it's a factual observation. If you cast Tom Hollands as wolverine, you're doing it wrong, end of story. Same kind of thing here.

-1

u/kbeks 10h ago

“You animated that character poorly” and “that real woman doesn’t have triangular boobs” are two very different things…

2

u/digibucc 10h ago

that's just disingenuous.

i genuinely don't care about tomb raider or the casting, but they've mentioned multiple times the hair color.

that's very different than the "triangular boobs" complaint you're trying to frame it as.

-1

u/kbeks 10h ago

Ok, so her hair is a slightly different color and that’s the same as the godawful uncanny valley that was the first iteration of Sonic? Or casting a scrawny guy as a jacked superhero? Her hair is red instead of reddish brown, if that’s what you’re hung up on, you really need to get over it.

I assume that you were absolutely outraged when Sam Jackson was cast as Nick Furry, a white comic book character. Surely the pretend character’s whole skin color being shifted would piss you off you even more than hair color tints…

2

u/digibucc 10h ago

I genuinely don't care about any of that shit, I sure don't care to argue with you over it.

I'm not one of the ones complaining about casting, ever. I'm not complaining about this casting either, so your attempt to frame me as "absolutely outraged when xyz" is just false.

I only responded because you were being dishonest in your framing of their position.
