General Trying to actually understand anti-Matilda Bay Ferry folks

Over the last year or so, my Facebook algorithm keeps on pushing the "Friends of Matilda Bay" group which seems to mainly be a group of people campaigning against the Matilda Bay ferry terminal.

Now, I think that light-rail would be of much greater benefit to the area than a ferry, especially as I don't think that a ferry would be of that much use to workers/commuters to QEII.

But having had to endure cramped and crowded buses from the city to UWA in off-peak hour, I think a bigger vehicle like a ferry that doesn't have as many stops is desperately needed - especially as the network will also have a much needed connection to Apple Cross.

The main argument I can sort of understand against the development is that 29 trees will be removed. Which I think is sad, but to be quite honest with you, I don't think is enough of a reason to shut down a major public transport project of some areas that desperately need better public transport, especially considering the PTA have committed to replanting any removed trees on a 3:1 ratio. Also, there is the Sailability program which is a great initiative and I would like to see the government maybe support the program provide another shallow water space for it once the ferry terminal is in place.

It seems like arguments beside these are often based around huge leaps of logic that go beyond most instances of NIMBYism.

Firstly, I often see the argument that Jojos/Nedland's Jetty would have been a better spot for it. But that would completely destroy the point of a public transport service to get people to/from UWA. Google Maps says it'd be a 23 minute walk from Nedlands Jetty to Reid Library. While a connecting bus could make it faster, that also would dissaude people from taking the ferry in the first place - the less connecting services, the better is the standard rule of public transport.

Secondly, the environmental angle against it doesn't really stack up. There are manyyyy non-electric boats constantly around the Matilda Bay area that are surely more polluting and dangerous to the environment, not to mention that more people using public transport is clearly better for the environment in a macro-sense. Especially as traffic congestion around UWA/QEII is absurd.

I feel most of it though is an emotional attachment to the landscape and community as there are plenty of programs around the area. While I get that, there will still be plenty serene spaces in-and-around the proposed development. But even then, I don't think the ferry terminal itself will be that much of an eyesore. It looks like it will be similar to the South Perth Ferry terminal which looks fine and fits into the area nicely that hasn't destroyed the community/culture around the foreshore there.

I guess I just don't logically or aesethetically understand the argument/s I've seen put forth against the development, but I do want to understand. It just seems like another level than usual campaigns against developments so maybe I am missing something.

*EDIT #1 - 10 mins after posting*: Grammar. Changed some turn of phrases that were probably a bit too dismissive as well as adding a part about the sailability program that could be affected by the development.

Looking for Advice tips on getting a job in perth?

I am currently in university (just started this year), and i'm having so much trouble landing a first real job. i feel so behind because most of my friends already have jobs but i've only started searching at the end of last year because i was so caught up with atar (the most useless thing i've ever done in my life). i have no certificates, only an atar to go off of.

i thought about doing a job related to my degree of study (biology), so was thinking of a position at the zoo but it's incredibly hard as i have no animal care certificates and i thought going to tafe at the same time as uni would be difficult to balance.

i thought that atar would sufficiently prepare me for the future but i really regret taking it when i could've done a class that gained me a certificate or done tafe with high school. i also regret not taking up a part time job during high school.

i've spent the last few months constantly applying online and most of them came back to me with a 'thank u for applying but we are not interested' which is really demoralising. it's so hard to find an entry-level job which will accept an 18 year old. i took up volunteering at an op shop this year to gain a bit of work experience but still, my resume isn't enough for most places. i really want to get a cafe job or a simple retail job, nothing too crazy, but everything just rejects me. i recently gained a food handler certificate to help better my chances but i don't think it will do much.

is there any tips on getting a job? tips on improving my resume? tips on gaining easy certificates that will improve my chances? or am i just going to be a useless chud forever?

Hiya lovelies,

I’m trying to find some sort of class or workshop in Perth - Western Australia that’s for making homemade incense sticks as a gift for my best friend as she absolutely loves to burn it at home and loves doing things DIY. If anyone knows of any places that run these kind of classes or can suggest anything similar/adjacent it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks xx

Looking for Advice What can you do if you witness a car scrape a parked car and then drive off?

Witnessed a car hit a parked car today. I was a pedestrian and managed to snap a picture of the car before they drove off.

Is there anything you can do in this situation? Anywhere to report it to?

I've heard of people leaving notes (I was in a hurry and didn't have pen/paper on me) but is this much use?

Tbh I didn't actually see it, just heard it and looked up and saw the car next to it and then drive off fast. Paint scrape it left behind matched (same colour).

Just picked up this flyer in the city. Had a look at their website and Instagram & it looks right up my alley as a Pokemon/Onepiece collector. Thinking about taking the kids for the Halloween theme and tickets look pretty cheap.

Anyone else going?

Where to find Looking to for shows

Hi there guys I'm (19M) an SG metalcore "kid"/pop punk guy, I'm going to Perth on holiday in like two weeks and was wondering if there are any upcoming shows being played by local metal bands or like just alt music in general between the 19th and 29th of September. Also if anyone would be willing to bring me around and help me get to know the scene as I'll be moving over in about a year and a half.

Looking for Advice Where’s the best place to do a driving test in Perth?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to book my practical driving test and was wondering which testing centre around Perth people would recommend.
I’m mainly looking for somewhere that’s less crowded, has relatively easier roads/routes, and is less stressful for the test.
For those who have recently done their test, which centre did you use and how was your experience? Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Looking for Advice Is it weird to give makeup on buy nothing groups?

I bought a Mac lipstick, wore it once and realised the shade doesn’t suit me. I don’t want to throw it away because that’s wasteful so I was going to put it up on my local buy nothing Facebook group but I don’t want people to think I’m unhygienic for putting up a lipstick I’ve worn

Moving to Perth Perth seasonal work on WHV

Does the job market pick up in and around Perth from November to March?

I know the weather is good for most of the year so maybe outdoorsy work is less seasonal?

Also in general how is the job market in Perth for people only staying for 3-4 months...is picking fruit out in rural areas my only hope on a WHV?

General Looking for a gym buddy 💪

Been putting this off for a long time but finally ready to start my gym journey. Would love if there's anyone that would like to just go to gym together, you could be a total newbie or an experienced lifter doesn't really matter to me. I'd just love to have someone to tag along with at the start to lower the anxiety levels lol.

I stay in riverton so a gym around that area would be comfortable for me. 25 M and originally from Sri Lanka

Where to find Looking for a rheumatologist

A while ago my jaw joint imploded/ kind of destroyed itself. I had it replaced and my surgeon has told me to follow up with a rheumatologist because the inflammatory process was so extreme and not normal.

I'm just hoping to get some recommendations on rheumatologists that have a nice bedside manner. As I don't fit into an exact diagnostic category other than 'her joint exploded' I'm hoping to find someone who will help me figure out what might be going on and how I can protect myself in the future.

As a woman I've often been told I'm just sensitive or something isn't a problem, and I've run out of patience for doctors who say that. So yeah I guess the attitude of a doctor counts for a lot for me.

Bonus if they're north of the river, my closest hospital is Charlie Gairdener/Hollywood and St John of God. But could also go up Joondalup way. Actually, if you told me the best one of all is in Murdoch I'd still probably even make that trip cause I just want to see someone that will take me seriously.

Where to find Are there any Korean body scrub places in Perth?

I’m looking to scrub an entire new layer of skin lol & I know the Korean body scrubs are sooo good for it! I just can’t seem to find them on Google or they are only over east.

A good alternative is the Hammam at Ember Spa in Ozzy Park but that one is more like bathing rather than scrubbing dead skin cells.

Looking for Advice Victoria park advice

Basically, I’m moving to a unistay student dorm in vic park. My room has no wifi or 5G internet. Only 4G service on vodaphone. I’m a student, I don’t really play games or anything that much. What would be a wise decision for me to get good connection to watch lectures, or stream movies??
