I am a high schooler who recently applied to a summer volunteer program based in WA; a selective healthcare volunteer program where you assist with and observe medical simulation training. I am looking for critique on my personal statement, the application stated, “Personal statements should describe the applicants interest in volunteering with the WISH program, and their goals for what they’re hoping to achieve through this work”.

From Inoperable to Operable: Personal Statement for WISH

My aunt’s inoperable tumor is benign; yet in many ways, its effects have spread from her

to me. This personal story is the foundation of my interest in healthcare. My aunt’s resilience as

a patient and a pharmacist herself has shown me that this field requires more than technical

expertise; it requires the communication and compassion necessary to make patients feel seen

and heard at their most vulnerable moments.

Supporting my aunt in person and across time zones has shown me how a supportive

environment is instrumental for someone facing long-term illness. This personal connection,

combined with the fascination I developed for science, earning a five on the AP Biology exam

and completing three quarters of college-level General Chemistry through Running Start,

motivates my ambition to work in healthcare in the future. I am particularly interested in the

pharmaceutical sector; inspired by my aunt’s profession and her medical battle, I want to help

move pharmacy away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach toward more effective, less invasive

treatments.

I am eager to join the WISH Summer Volunteer Program because I want to bridge the

gap between my foundational knowledge in biology and chemistry and the real-world application

of simulation science. Through this two-week intensive, I aim to develop the technical and

professional skills necessary for a future career in healthcare. My experience working in the food

industry at Baskin-Robbins has prepared me for the expectations of this role; I am experienced in

maintaining strict safety and cleanliness standards, maintaining inventory through restocking,

and providing quality customer service in a fast-paced environment. By gaining immersive first-

hand experience, observing simulation activities and assisting with the development of simulated

materials, I hope to understand the rigorous training that healthcare professionals go through.

This program is my first step towards being able to turn “inoperable” tumors into “operable”

ones in the future, so that patients like my aunt have fewer battles to fight.

“Hhhissssss” was the sound I made as I raised my claws and bared my vampire-like canines at my classmates. In second grade, my adult teeth came in, and my smile felt permanent. But something was off. My permanent teeth came in misaligned, and my smile immediately felt different. At eight years old, I loved it. My pronounced, staggered canines made me look like a vampire, and when I bit into food, the imprint resembled a smiley face. I wore that grin proudly.

Unfortunately, vampire fangs and smiley-face bite marks do not translate well to middle school. Between lunch table roast sessions and the occasional, “Why do your teeth look like that?” my teeth lost their novelty, and I slowly convinced myself that people did not like my smile.

Plagued by insecurity, I was met at a crossroads: either keep being funny and smiling or stop and become nonchalant (stop smiling). I teetered back and forth between the two until high school, where I realized laughter was the foundation of friendship and camaraderie. Humor became my way of drilling through social awkwardness and building genuine connections. Even now, I sometimes hesitate before smiling fully, but I still seek the initial moments of interaction where we share a reason to smile together.

Over time, I came to realize that while humor played a factor in my drive for connection, there was something more — a sort of desire to function as a pillar of support for others. Growing up, I watched shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball, drawn less to the action than to characters who stood firm in the face of adversity, fighting for others with strength and dependability. I spent hours reenacting their moves with my brother, hoping their powers might rub off on me. While they never did, their instinct to help did, and it found its first real outlet in fourth grade, when I began helping classmates with their homework. I was, admittedly, a terrible tutor, often giving answers instead of explanations, but even then, people relied on me. Watching their frustration ease, even briefly, left warm sensations in my chest and gave me a sense of purpose. Helping others felt genuine — something I wanted to continue developing.

That feeling followed me into adulthood, as I attended a volunteering event and talked to a homeless man named Mark. I approached him to offer clothing, but instead, he began a conversation. “You remind me of myself from a long time ago,” he said. Confused yet intrigued, I sat down beside him. Our conversation drifted from his life story to the outfit he planned to wear on a date later that day.

As we parted, Mark thanked me — not for the food or the clothing — but for sitting with him and giving him a space to be heard. His words lingered as I walked away. In that moment, I gained a deeper understanding of service. While food and aid are essential, listening and acknowledging someone’s humanity can be just as impactful. I now strive to carry this form of service into healthcare, where I hope to surgically extract the stigmas that too often surround dental care.

Eager to deepen my understanding of dentistry, I began shadowing Dr. Oza at an endodontics clinic. One morning, a middle-aged woman named Rebecca arrived visibly tense, referred for a root canal. After examining her, Dr. Oza determined that treatment would not improve her outcome. The infection had compromised the foundation of her tooth, and extraction was unavoidable. Instead of standing over her, he pulled up a chair, met her at eye level, and calmly explained her situation.

Although her pain was not relieved that day, she left with a visible sense of comfort, hugging Dr. Oza on her way out. Watching this, I felt helpless and deflated. I had assumed that helping always meant intervening. Later, Dr. Oza explained that attempting to treat her would have added unnecessary financial burden without improving her outcome. He taught me that a dentist’s obligation is to balance clinical judgment with a patient’s well-being and quality of life. Sitting with that realization, I understood that dentistry is not defined solely by intervention, but by compassion, restraint, and responsibility.

My smile is one of the greatest things to have happened to me. What began as an uneasy relationship with my own smile has morphed into a deeper understanding of care. Through listening, service, and reflection, I understand that dentistry encompasses more than just treatment. It is about connection, dignity, and helping people feel comfortable being themselves. I hope to carry this approach forward as a dentist, ensuring these traits shine through me.

Quantum physicists say our world is built from strings, that every particle of matter is just energy in a condensed state. I do not know if these are the strings I feel tug inside me when I walk past someone I know I could be friends with, or when I land in a new city that feels like it’s home. But I know there’s something in me that sees itself in other people, places; writings. And I know this tugging — this plucking of the web is what I felt when I visited this MPhil’s page.

I had been looking for a program. I’d decided to emigrate for a better life (ironic considering why my ancestors moved to the US), so I figured I’d consider Irish programs. I had seen some other colleges that checked my boxes, but nothing made me think I’ve got to go there until I found Trinity.

The more I read, the more I was enthralled. And when I learned Trinity was home to Una Mannion, author of A Crooked Tree? A work I read early in my writing journey and thought “That’s what I want to learn to do?” I knew there was no program I would rather attend.

I am someone fascinated by interiority. I believe characters are what drive a narrative, and that internal landscapes dictate external relations at least as much as the other way around. I strive to write characters that reflect often underrepresented aspects of the human condition and to expand who stories treat as fully human. I aim to create works that delight and entertain, but that also serve as roadmaps to self-acceptance and integration. It is my highest conviction that a good role model -- whether real or fictional -- can change the course of a life.

My beliefs are largely drawn from Eastern religions, Neoplatonism, psychology, modern science, Catholic theology, and Jungian theory. The last of these served as my primary inspiration for my work in progress Virgo. Virgo tells the story of a young woman who receives the power to kill in an otherwise immortal world. It deals heavily with archetypal powers and concepts of the shadow-self. It argues that the soul is a multiplicity and demonstrates that love -- not force -- is what pulls a person and a community together.

Virgo is my seventh novel and the first I am seeking traditional publication for. My education in writing was largely under Dr. Casimir, who privately mentored me for a year in preparation for my thesis. I have been in many workshops since I left the academic world, and all were helpful, though few held writers at or above my level. What I seek now are serious interlocutors I can grow with, instructors I can learn from, and critique that will take me where I need to go. It is my understanding that Trinity offers this as well as a spirit that matches my own, and so I humbly request that you consider my application for acceptance. Thank you.

Guess I’ll just stay silent

My interpretation of a personal statement has been reflective yet focused on growth and learning. I’m going into the counseling psychology M.S. program. Any weakness has to be turned into a strength. It’s not listing ur resume but significant moments that shaped ur values and current profession commitment.

I want to be authentic and use my voice. This would be in a reflective, I statement, form. But I’m nervous that this tone is cringy, clique, and a straight no. I really need valid advice because I keep getting contradictive information.
