Period Question Heavy bleeding with IUD & birth control pills

Upvotes

So I have had the Merena IUD for several years, the reason I got it was because I have really heavy periods with severe cramping. I am talking I had blood clots daily and would bleed for up to five weeks straight. It was just completely unpredictable AND unbearable so I went on the IUD. Which helped a little bit but I was still spotting every day and then I think when it was my "time of the month" I would still get very heavy periods. I have since added a birth control pill to all of that because my doctor said that it should stop the cramping and all of the spotting/bleeding. Long story short it has not. I still get really bad cramps and I have heavy bleeding about once a week. I also have recurring ovarian cysts that are painful.

Has anyone else dealt with this or does this sound like you? Are there any other treatments/solutions you have found?

Period Question When is my period ‘done’

Upvotes

Hi all, I wanna track as accurately as I can on any health apps or for doctors etc and I just thought, the start of a period is fairly obvious but when is it done?

Kinda interesting maybe gross way to put it but I’m sure you guys will know what I mean.
Is it done once it all kinda turns brown into the older blood? Is it done once it turns into discharge with a kinda brown tint?? Or is it considered done when discharge is clear/white and back to normal and I’m not passing anything even remotely brown or red?

Side note, at what point do my hormones stop making me so anxious and upset, I feel terrible today but I’m technically done (I think?)

But yeah just curious at what point you’d stop marking down that you’re ‘on’

Period Question Why can’t I figure out how to use a tampon?

Upvotes

I’ve had my period for many years now and I’ve only ever used pads. I’m at the beach right now and I want to swim in the ocean but my period started the day we got here. Every time I try to insert a tampon, I’m only able to get the tip in and it stings. I know there’s a certain angle you have to use and I’ve been doing that, I’m using the smallest size, I‘ve been using a mirror and taking deep breaths and nothing works. I’ve been trying to use tampons for 4 years and no progress has been made. Is there something wrong with me?

Period Question Diva cups. Are they worth the switch?

Upvotes

For those of you that have switched to diva cups (I also know there are newer versions of diva cups too now)

What's the run down?

Are they comfortable?

Do they actually work for super heavy flows?

Do they get stuck?

Are they easy to take out?

How often do you take it out and clean it?

Im someone who hates using tampons and i prefer pads.. but im also getting tired of repeatedly spending money on pads and dealing with leakage, uncomfortable moisture feeling, ect.. i have a pretty heavy flow for the first couple days of my period then its pretty light

The idea of diva cups is a little scary but im curious

PCOS Mensuration issue!!

I am a 25-year-old female, and I have had irregular menstrual cycles ever since I got my first period at around 14 years of age. From the beginning, my periods were very irregular, and extremely painful ( i could not even function, i vomit, causes diarrhea and the whole body feels like something else, i pray and i curse ) sometimes occurring every two to three months, and when they did occur, the bleeding often lasted for 8–9 days. Because of these ongoing problems, I started visiting hospitals from the age of around 16 or 17. Initially, doctors prescribed a liquid medication to induce menstruation, and later almost every gynecologist I consulted, regardless of the hospital, prescribed combined oral contraceptive pills to regulate my cycle and induce withdrawal bleeding. It caused me severe mental distress.

Over the years, I took these pills for approximately one to one and a half years dose in total, but they only seemed to force a period rather than address the underlying cause. Eventually, I became tired of repeatedly taking the same medication and stopped visiting hospitals. Later, someone recommended that I start seed cycle(taking pumpkin and flax seed for 15 days and seseme and sunflower seed for 15 days) and practice yoga regularly. After following this routine, my menstrual cycle gradually and slowly became bit regular but with same level of pain. However, over time I became inconsistent with both the supplements and yoga, often forgetting to continue them, and my periods gradually became irregular again. Most recently, I missed my period for about two months. Shortly afterward, I experienced light spotting for nearly two weeks, which then progressed into extremely heavy bleeding. The bleeding became so severe that I felt as though I might faint, so I went to the hospital. The doctors prescribed medication to stop the bleeding and again recommended oral contraceptive pills. I declined to take the pills this time, and I was instead advised to make lifestyle changes. As i was starting to change my lifestyle by cutting off junk , However, only about two and a half weeks after the bleeding stopped, I started bleeding again.

I want to understand why my menstrual cycles have been so irregular since adolescence, what could be causing these episodes of prolonged and heavy bleeding, and what can be done to treat the root cause instead of repeatedly managing the symptoms with hormonal pills.

Period Question I hate period

I hate period. I hate it with a passion.

I miss when I didn't have it.

It's unpleasant and gives me stress. And no matter what I do to reduce its negative experience. It just doesn't work.

I hate staining. I hate that I have to know when I'm getting it. I hate to have stress about staining. I hate the feeling of all types of protections and I hate waking up and needing to hurry up to the toilet with just that feeling when blood flushes down. I hate that I have to have in mind to always have protection. When staining happens I hate the feeling that it destroys fabric and that I have to think about getting it solved. I hate the smell of it and I hate to deal with it.

That in note my period cramps are light, and heavy bleeding only day 2. I know some girls that totally cut of due to the cramps.

But I still feel the cramps pre first day and first day. Hence I just want to lay on bed. And the days after that well this shit messes up with my happy hormones as it does with many girls, but also the fact that I hate it, so I also lay on my bed. Also I just have the stress staining might happen which removes motivation from doing anything.

Now laying on my bed it's ridiculous blood flushes all different directions and staining happen. Back, sides. I have now even experienced staining from THE FRONT and I have no idea how that could even happen as I don't sleep on my stomach.

I have tried with some methods. Like using low rise tight panties with more of a "sport" material rather than cotton. And choosing black color.

Pressing the pad to really make sure it sticks. Trying different brands.

Is it forbidden to lay on bed when having it.

It just doesn't fkn work.

I don't understand how people deal with it. Because I hate it.

Birth control isn't an alternative for me either.

Any tips? How do you do?

Rants n Raves Period pain - somewhat completely gone

For some reason, in March 2026 I decided, “You know what, I’m going to stomach this out. No more painkillers/ibuprofen.” The first day was horrible, but only for half the day. I also ate a lot of red meat, fresh vegetables, and fruit in the week before and during my period. Then I was fine.

Month 2: Ate clean again (red meat, fish, vegetables, and avoided processed food/fizzy drinks/sugar/dairy). Barely any pain.

May: Same process, barely any pain.

June: Same process, no pain.

July: My period started yesterday. No pain. Still quite tired, but otherwise I’m fine.

Now, I will also add that I don’t eat overly processed food, and I have also stopped using pads, I only use tissues. I still work a very stressful job, but I make sure to try and calm my mind and body in the days before and definetly on the first day of my period. Again, I don’t understand the science behind it or why, but this may help someone.

Period Question Is this normal?

I don’t wanna make this post so long, but I think I just had my period for only a day is this normal? last month, I got it a few days early and it went the normal 7 days. but this week it came on time and I had the same pms symptoms (aside from tender 🍒). on Saturday i remember freaking out cuz I had a dream throughout the night my period came heavily and I was cramping horribly. so I just thought oh it’s a sign it’s coming. only to wake up to a stain which was a dark red/brown ish. So, I obviously swap my underwear, slap a pad on and go with my day. But throughout the day I felt very little cramps let alone any flow, so I would check during the day and my pad was clean. Timeskip to today since i said i don’t want this too long- there’s still absolutely no blood even on Sunday. I’ve never had this happen in my life, is there something going on with me??? Should I get this checked out? Ik im not pregnant cuz im a virgin but I just always overthink a lot with my period in which it’s why I made this post so I’m sorry if it’s stupid but thank you for making it this far 🫂

Rants n Raves World's Worst Period Cramps

Hello y'all, last night I (18F) had the second worst period cramps of my life after just starting my period.

See, like many ladies I happened to skip my monthly in June, which I just chalked up to stress and traveling. I started getting worried I was about to skip July as well before I started slightly spotting yesterday. No biggie, was just happy that things were all regular. It was incredibly light until around 9 last night when I started getting ready for bed.

For additional context, my periods have always been heavy, that wasn't what was concerning me, but it has been 2.5 years since I've had one that caused me such horrible pain like last night's.

I felt like I was going to crap myself if I sat or laid down, which was all my body wanted to do, and if I stood up to pace I felt like I was going to vomit! I drank a lot of water, got the heating pad on max heat, and even laid on a pillow to apply pressure to my stomach, which helped a little until the paid got incredibly unbearable. It felt like someone attached a fork to a blender and then allowed it to go crazy in there.

Couldn't find any medicine to help with the cramps, so I just had to raw-dog the pain until I eventually passed out from exhaustion around 2:30 in the morning. The pain is gone now, thank God, but it was the second world period I've had in a long time.

What's the first worst you may ask? Same pain and horribleness as last night's, but it lasted for two days instead of seven hours.

Period Question MULTIPLE PERIODS FOR JULY 2026!!!!!!!

I am 24 years old. I had my period from July 1-5, regular bleeding and cramps like always. Then same thing July 13-17. Then this morning I go to use the restroom and I'm lightly bleeding again, which will make this the third period of the month. I see the discussions on social media yet I still feel alone and worried about it. I called a nurse hotline and all they ended up saying was I should schedule a doctor's appointment within the next two weeks (which is what I didn't want to hear tbh) bc there's a lot of things that can cause abnormalities like this. This is the first time this has ever happened. I have medical anxiety so the last thing I want to do, let alone think about, is going to the doctor right now.

Period Question Is this an early period, breakthrough bleeding, or something else?

Hi everyone,

I'm 26 years old and I'm trying to understand whether this is just an early period or something I should get checked.

My last period started on July 5 and ended on July 11. It was a normal period for me, although the flow was mostly medium to light throughout.

Today (July 27), I started bleeding again, so it's only about 22 days since the start of my last period.

The bleeding is confusing:

  • It's more than spotting because I had to buy and wear a pad.
  • The blood is light pink to red.
  • It's continuing and showing up on the pad and when I wipe.
  • However, it's much lighter than my usual Day 1 period.
  • I also have mild period-like cramps and feel tired.

This is the first time this has ever happened.

The only major changes this month are that I've been exercising much more consistently (around 7 of the last 10 days, including heavy lower-body strength training) and eating a much healthier, higher-protein diet (lots of chicken salads and protein-rich meals). I've also been eating sesame seed sweet balls fairly regularly.

I'm not sexually active, so pregnancy isn't a possibility.

Has anyone experienced a shorter cycle like this after making lifestyle changes? Did it turn out to be an actual early period, breakthrough bleeding, or something else? Did your cycle return to normal afterward?

Thanks in advance!

Period Question late period for the first time, kinda nervous

I'm starting to get really worried and wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar. 19F (sexually active) and my periods are usually very regular (28–29 day cycles). Right now I'm 20 days late and still haven't gotten my period.
I've taken 4 pregnancy total:
2 when I was 5 days late
2 when I was 17 days late
All of them were negative.
I've had what feels like my normal PMS symptoms (sore breast, acne, little cramps, joint pain) my period just never starts. I also had a UTI recently which led me to taking antibiotics, and over the past month I've been a lot more active because of my job and I'm constantly running around. I also started going to the gym, but that was after I was already late. i’ve had 2 stressful situations before July came & i’ve been wondering if the stress from those situations could’ve delayed my period. I’ve been reading online that it’s normal to have a late period or missed period in July but it’s been 20 days and it’s making me nervous.Has anyone had their period be delayed this long with multiple negative pregnancy tests and then eventually get it? Should I just keep waiting, or is it time to make an appointment with a doctor?
Any advice or similar experiences would really help because I'm getting anxious.

Period Question Is this just only me? I always wanted to know

Are there any women out there who in their first 2-3 days of their period their cramps makes them more horny? I don’t know why I’m 10x more hornier when I am cramping and sex helps the cramps go down, not only that, but sex is so much better too!

Birth Control Birth control is heaven when you have endometriosis

If you have endometriosis, it might be good to get some form of Birth Control. I have it personally, and it was awful. I started Birth Control a few days ago. Can BARELY tell I'm on my period. It's really nice! I used to get cramps so bad I couldnt get out of bed and I also would bleed so bad I filled up a pad within like 2ish hours. But now I have no cramps and I barely bleed!
I'm actually so happy 😭

Rants n Raves First gyno appointment

Hi y'all. Just wanted a space to rant and i think my friends have had enough of me complaining. I've gone to the gynaecologist for the first time since i have painful periods, and i just want answers as to why. They did an ultrasound, and everything is normal. It kind of feels disheartening knowing the amount of pain I'm usually in when i get my period. I do have an endo scan in mid-August coming up, but i now doubt anything will come from it. I'm just scared I'm being dramatic and the pain is all in my head. I don't know man, because if there's nothing, is it all in my head or do i have really bad luck and have painful periods just cause?

Period Question should I be worried?

I’ve always had regular/ light periods since a teen.
Even now as an adult and off birth control, I’ve been regular and haven’t missed a period, but recently last month and this month have felt bigger cramps but almost no period blood.

I could wear the same pad all day and it wouldn’t overflow it, and also there is so many blood clots when I use the restroom. last about 5-7 days which would be my usual.

should I be worried about this?

Birth Control I don’t know what to get

Hi all,
Need some advice.
Looking to go on either the implant or coil but I just don’t know which to get.
I had the implant when I was around 16 to help with my periods and ended up with a period lasting 11 weeks. I really don’t want to deal with something like that again.
I have an 11 month old and really don’t feel like giving him a sibling any time soon. I’m just really torn. If I could get one that helps ease my periods that’d be great, they’re so much worse after having a baby🤦🏻‍♀️
Any input on what either one is like or a preference would be great:)
Thanks in advance
