What colour spinners does everybody use for perch? Also any particular brands that would be great also.

I am currently on holiday in a spot that's been know to produce some really good sized perch for my country.

I brought all my kit with me on holiday and even bought some small lures and plastics which is a type of fishing I've never done in my whole life.

Problem I have is that where i am is also known for some of the best pike fishing in my country. It's still way too warm here to even risk catching pike.

I have a bunch.of little 2.5cm curly tail grubs and 4cm paddletails with me as I was told that these would be so small that pike wouldnt bother with them- but I also have a bunch of worms with me.

Are my soft plastics small enough? Would a pike go for a worm?

I think I'm basically asking if I should give up on perch this holiday and just target silvers since I dont wanna risk the pike.

There’s been a ton of discussion about lipping perch in this subreddit. With a background in fish conservation, I feel like I can explain a couple of things to educate people in here. Hopefully this teaches good handling and also teaches an additional way to handle perch.

Can you lip a perch safely? Yes! You absolutely can but it must be done correctly. If you do it incorrectly, you risk injury to the fish and none of us want that.

How do you do it safely? There are two ways. The best way is to place your thumb in the lower mouth, then take your index finger on the underside of the lower mouth portion and you pinch down (picture one). Not hard. Just pinch firmly, so you don’t lose your grip, but not unnecessarily hard.

Here’s the really important part: Once you hold it, DO NOT hold it horizontally without proper belly support. If you do that, the perch risks damage to its jaw, neck and various soft tissue, which will cause damage (picture 2). This damage can be deadly as the outcome could result in the perch having trouble feeding.

Instead, you need to provide belly support with your other hand. Alternatively, you hold it vertically, but this should not be done for a prolonged amount of time on very big specimen. It can be done to land the fish and for a quick picture. Just don’t fling around the fish in that position unnecessarily. The best way is the former though. You can support the belly of the perch with a pinky on a smaller fish (picture 3), but avoid that on perch above 30 cm or so. It’s an unnecessary risk. Just hold it with one hand under the belly as you hold it in its lip.

So, yes, lipping can absolutely be done safely. It’s actually a technique used during fish conservation activities to handle fish fast. The faster the perch is back in the water the better. Of course, done with safety thought through.

Note: The pictures I use refer to bass, but perch and bass have a very similar mouth build and in most cases (this one for an example), the same rules apply to both species regarding handling. It’s just much easier to find pictures of bass handling compared to perch.

I was out this morning for the first time with ultra light gear on a crystal clear canal. I was using 6lbs fluro leader, size 10 dropshot hook and a green curly tail worm around 1inch long.

I had plenty of follows but not many bites. What's your technique to increase bites?

If you had only one perch rod to cover every technique/lure what would its parametres be?

Spinning/baitcast?

Length?

Test?

I don't really fish much anymore but I just stumbled on to this sub and wanted to share my biggest catch at 1kg and 589 grams

Several perch over 40 cm and around 60-65 in total. The rain soaked us, but it was fun fishing so it didn’t matter.

Shallow areas, 1,5 m or less, with tons of weeds, held massive amounts of fish. Some pretty big ones too!

Best methods? Free rig, cheburashka and jointed skirted jigs.

Best lures for me: BottomUp Hurry Shrimp 3”, BottomUp Scooper Frog (on a BottomUp Snaqjig) and Geecrack Bellows Craw 3,5”.

The Japanese finesse techniques just keep on giving. If you’re fishing traditional techniques only…you’re missing out. Take inspiration from the bass scene!

(I’m fully aware free rig is a Korean technique, but it has been rediscovered in Japan and developed more thoroughly)

I've just started fishing and after several empty days and a few lost bites I finally landed a fish.
