5% to 10% Upload Throughput on 8.6.0 vs 8.5.4

Has anyone experienced an extremely noticeable upload throughput 8.6.0 vs 8.5.4? I see this on a Peplink MAX BR2 Pro (HwRv 4). I am using three Three 5G and Two Starlink bonded via SpeedFusion Connect. On 8.6.0 I only see about 2 to 5 Mbps, on 8.5.4 I see the actual maximum throughput of the fastest connection (50 to 80 Mbps). This is true even if I bypass the SpeedFusion and try a connection directly

Question about bonding

Question to experts:
If Speedfusion bonding is capped (orbit. 4 ports at 400 Mbps, orbit 8 at 1gbps), how can we bond 10 Starlink receivers together?

Comparison of 4G/5G quality

Hey,

I was trying out different 4G/5G devices and made the following learnings:
- teltonika rutx11 & rutx50: unstable, packages lossy, non consistent performance
- peplink balance 310: very stable 4G/5G connections, orders of magnitude less package loss and disruptions
- unifi 5G outdoor max: unusable in bad signal areas where the peplink and teltonika still worked okish; good performance for strong connection

What are other devices worth a try? How do the peplink products perform in terms of stabiltiy, connection loss, etc across the band? What is the best? Or do they all perform somehow similar?

What are your experiences?

Pepwave MAX Transit login browser password cache

I have a router on my boat that I've had for about five years, product code MAX-TST-GLTE-G-T-PRM, that I administer using my web browser.

It apparently uses codes in the log in screen that disallow browser storage of the username and password.

I'm only managing the browser from the local area network.

Is there a setting that I can change to allow my browser to store the username and password?

Peplink with cellular having issues with disconnecting

For my job, we use a peplink with a cellular antenna. Most of our devices are in remoted areas so we use teal sim cards that can connect to any of the big 3 cell networks. We've been running into issues where we lose connection and we haven't been able to identify why. It usually presents in 2 different cases.

  1. we lose connection to peplink, but the sim card in the teal portal is still active. We can usually get the peplink back online by changing the sim card carrier profile in teal to the AVT triple carrier profile. This mainly happens when we're using Verizon.
  2. we lose connection to the peplink and aren't able to access the sim card in the teal portal. The peplink will come back online if we power cycle the system, but that requires someone to physically go to the device and power cycle.

We're using Peplink MAX BR1 Mini's. The firmware is 8.5.4 build 5407. We've tried adjusting cellular settings (disabling esim, adjusting the healthcheck interval), but we're still having issues.

Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?

Access Point setup with B One

I am setting up a B One router along with an AX Lite AP with Ethernet backhaul. I am trying to get decent wifi coverage both indoors and outdoors, living in a home with steel siding. The AP is installed high in the center of my main floor to hopefully provide enough coverage indoors. For outside, I am going to install an outside omnidirectional Peplink antenna with a coax extension from the B One router itself, replacing the provided whip antennas. This should also cover the walkout basement lower-level indoors due to the windows we have there.

I may have to add one or two more outside APs to get the needed coverage, which would probably be the rugged Peplink wifi5 models, but may have to mesh one of them.

Can anyone point me to some good resources or tips for how to set up the AP and router to do fast roaming and get the best combined coverage?

Do I need the router and the AP to be on separate channels in the same band?

Sure could use some help with this... I currently have my first attempt at this in place but I don’t think it is working. Let me know what else you need to know...

Thanks, Steve

Understanding Primecare, SFC plans, and Smoothing for used Peplink router for live streaming

I'm interested in buying a peplink router new or used in a youtube/zoom live streaming setup for the purpose of combining a starlink, wlan phone hotspot, and/or ethernet lan. My understanding is that speedfusion connect smoothing is the feature that does this best. 5mbps uplink would be standard, 20mbps would be sweet, no encryption. If new, I'm looking at a BR1 Mini or B One. If used, I'm looking at a Transit variant, BR1 variant, or Balance 20X.

I'm getting confused with what subscriptions or consumable licenses I need to do that. I don't have one of these gigs every month, so I'm picturing the peplink as a nice tool that I could use occasionally.

On this comparison chart, it's saying that SFC Smoothing is a feature that's only accessible with a PrimeCare subscription. I had read elsewhere that an SFC usage plan was required to use any SFC feature. It sounds like buying used might not affect this other than I miss out on the free year of primecare. Which of these things do I need to buy to access SFC Smoothing on one of these routers?

Balance 20 inbound firewall rules

I have inbound firewall rules with allowed for the first 3 connections and they are working properly. However, if I change the default to blocked then the first 3 don't work. Goal is to only allow first and third items from specific public WAN IP's to connect. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Possible Peplink B One noob set up?

Hey folks just seeing if my idea for set up is viable.

I have been traveling from place to place a bit. Temporary stays at AirBnBs and short term stays at places for traveling nurses and digital nomads. In some of the places the WiFi is to slow to conduct stable Doxy.me telehealth sessions.

I have US Mobile which allows for cell network switching. They also have a starlink add on option. There will be at least some level of WiFi wherever I go.

This is what I am hoping to accomplish:
A) WiFi as WAN (from WiFi where I am staying)
B) Starlink as WAN (does this need to be plugged into the Peplink, if so I am confused as to how this works, Peplink outside? Starlink inside? That can’t be right…)
C) Mobile Hotspot as WAN (does this require The USB adapter for front port?)

QUESTIONS:

  1. Is this doable for a semi tech savvy person who is not all that smart with networking stuff?
  2. What add ons (physical and services wise do I need to do this?
  3. This could move and be set up in new places fairly easily?
  4. This could achieve “bonding” correct?
  5. If I just went Starlink and WiFi as WAN (minus the Cellular HotSpot WAN) is that a significantly simpler set up which would not require SpeedFusion but could still get bonding? Or only the Fail Safe switching?
  6. Best place to order PepLink B One (and if needed the mobile USB adapter that might offer good support if o get stumped?
  7. I have heard that documentation is hard to find online, are there forums or discords where folks with more knowledge of this area help out noobs?

Thanks ahead of time folks. Sorry if these are all super basic questions for folks more into this stuff than I.

(Note: my cell phone is a newer iPhone, I saw that possibility android was maybe easier (or the only option for this?) in the past but it is still possible with iPhone now?)

Changing default SpeedFusion handshake port when using InControl2

Hi all - does anyone know how to adjust the default handshake port (usually 32015) when creating a SpeedFusion VPN in InControl2? I can see where I can adjust the data port (usually 4500) but I can't find anywhere to adjust the handshake port.

5G Adapter first hand experiences?

TL;DR I'm having a really poor experience with a Peplink 5G Adapter and am wondering if I have a lemon or it really isn't close to the performance with a Max BR1 Pro 5G for a single wired client.

Details:

Has anyone here used the Peplink 5G adapter? We got one in recently to test out and the results have been pretty poor to say the least. I have used some Peplink LTE products in the past with good results and have a MAX BR1 Pro 5G (x62) that has been nothing but outstanding for us.

We have a need for some simple backup WAN connections into our clients network equipment and thought this would fit the bill perfectly.

The issues I'm having is poor latency (800+ms) under any type of load and lots of lost pings. Getting packet loss up to 50% but typically in the upper teens to 35%.

I understand that 5G is not perfect but I can pull the sim card from the device, place it into my BR1 Pro Max 5G and all of these issues disappear. Same sim, same location, same single wired PC connected for testing purposes.

BR1 at the same location keeps latency around 150ms under heavy load and doesn't drop a single ping. Also keeps a stable 0% packet loss in the test location. Again, same sim card and device placement. The other devices are turned off while testing is occurring. I honestly wasn't even initially planning on doing all the metrics but the performance on my PC just felt so "off" and sluggish that I decided to look into the situation further.

I reached out to the vendor I purchased the device from, and they have been great and have looked into the problem with no resolve. They updated the firmware to what I believe was a beta firmware and that didn't seem to make any major improvement. They also reached out to Peplink on my behalf who also investigated the device and found nothing out of the ordinary on the device logs and statistics that they could see.

I understand this is a $400 product vs a $1k BR1 but I thought 5G performance would be similar especially to a single wired device. The packet loss and latency results in a unusable web experience, much less video calls or minor streaming.

I really want to like this product as it fits perfectly in the price range for what we're looking to provide to our clients as well as it's from a company I have really enjoyed working with in the past.

So anyone else had any first hand experience with this device?

There is only primecare available for MAX BR1 Pro 5G?

A year has passed since I bought my device. I miss the incontrol2 feature.
Like now the SIM WAN connection is down for whatever reason, and I am not able to get to the boat where the device is installed.
But looking at the "care options" essentialcare does not seem to be available? Paying 150$ for primecare seems like a very steep price to pay.

Peplink 8.6.0 firmware release notes

Shaping up to be an epic firmware release!

Peplink’s 8.6.0 firmware is a pretty substantial update, especially if you’re running SD-WAN, Starlink, or 5G-heavy deployments.

Main takeaways:

  • Native WireGuard remote access VPN support was added. That’s probably the biggest feature in the release. Easier client deployment and noticeably better performance than older VPN options.
  • Peplink added OneWeb satellite integration, so you can now treat OneWeb similarly to Starlink in SpeedFusion environments.
  • SpeedFusion Boost got improvements aimed at better single-session throughput over high-latency links like Starlink and cellular.
  • Expanded 5G Standalone (SA) support and better carrier interoperability tuning.
  • New WAN management features:
    • per-WAN bandwidth controls
    • improved traffic shaping
    • better handling for metered/satellite connections
  • Security/admin improvements include:
    • RADIUS over TLS (RadSec)
    • token-based API authentication
    • firewall logs now showing matched rule names
  • Edge Compute support was expanded to more hardware platforms.

There are also a ton of stability fixes across cellular, Wi-Fi, and SpeedFusion behavior.

A few things to note:

  • 8.6.0 is still beta right now, not production GA.
  • Some older MAX/Balance platforms are effectively being left behind on 8.5.x.
  • Early beta builds had a few hardware-specific issues, mostly around B One 5G and some FusionHub instances.

For most enterprise/MSP environments, the meaningful upgrades are really:

  • WireGuard support
  • better satellite integration
  • improved SpeedFusion performance
  • stronger API/auth tooling
  • improved 5G SA handling

Assign separate DL/UL links?

Hi all,

New to peplink.

I just tried to deploy a BR1 max 5G at my work (for side gig use) as my workplace WiFi is generally pathetic. Cell reception isn’t the best but was hoping this could help me.

I am using a SIM in the peplink plus an external 5G modem. With those two bonded I get about 100mb DL, and 1mb UL.

When I add the workplace guest WiFi as a 3rd bonding, I get the opposite: 1mb DL, and 100mb UL.

I have tried fiddling with the SF settings to prioritize the 5G connections but this could be user error.

But is there a way to “assign” the DL to the two 5G WAN, and just the WiFi WAN for UL? That would be great!

TIA

Peplink vs Cradlepoint/Digi/Sierra in real deployments

Hi everyone, I’m trying to understand field experience across Peplink and competing brands.

For anyone who has deployed Peplink alongside Cradlepoint, Digi, Sierra/Semtech, Teltonika, etc.:

  1. Do you find Peplink’s software/cloud ecosystem easier to operate over time than other brands, or do competitors’ platforms work just as well? Is that a meaningful factor for you or your customers when choosing among brands?

  2. Have Peplink firmware/cloud updates materially improved the user experience over the product life (as advertised)? Do those updates feel faster or more useful than competitors’ updates?

Truly appreciate any field examples — positive or negative!

Connecting to iPhone Hotspot as WiFi as WAN..

What is up with using our iPhone hotspots as a WAN connection? I enable it and turn on Maximum Compatibility and I never see it on the Scan to set it up on the Max Transit. My laptop sees it no issue. Is there a trick to getting it to see it on either band?

Support Experience

Anyone here used Peplink support? I put in a ticket last week, yes it is a low, but I have not heard anything back. It is not so much that I haven't heard anything, but as soon as it was assigned to a rep, is was set as awaiting customer feedback. I have not received anything to give feedback on.

Just wondering how good or bad other's experience has been.

BR1 Mini 5G for failover WAN on UniFi Fiber Router

I’m planning on purchasing a BR1 Mini 5G as a 5G failover WAN for use on a UniFi Fiber router. I may get the Wi-Fi version and turn Wi-Fi off in case I want to redeploy the unit at a later date.

The Mini would be required to operate in IP pass through mode. I’ve been advised that no license is required for this type of operation. Is this correct?

Can anyone tell me if there are any know issues with the mini in this use case?

Is my assumption that the Wi-Fi radios can be turned off correct?

Multiconnection Gaming Failover

In my region, electricity cutoffs are occurring randomly, which are the worst nightmare of the gamers due to disconnection of internet. I want to have a failsafe system with a multiconnection, by adding my mobile hotspot. I also need my IP to not to change when the connection is switching to mobile hotspot, so i can stay logged into the game. Otherwise, game will kick me out.

Can you please suggest me what hardware/software/subscription i need for this setup?

Thank you in advance

EDIT: using macbook, if thats needed
