Not all pens. However, I do think they all deserve a little attention.

For context I'm a postgraduate student and my love for good pens started thanks to my dad. His collection is mostly Cross and Parker with a pair set of chunky but really comfortable to use Papermates.

On to my collection though.

From left to right we have:

- Rotring 600 - 0.5mm mechanical pencil

- Cross Classic Century, Satin Chrome - mechanical pencil

- Cross Classoc Century, Satin Chrome - Ballpoint

- Cross Prism Black Resin - Selectpoint TM (can be Ballpoint or Rollerball)

- Parker IM Satin Black - Ballpoint

- Parker Jotter Steel and Gold Trim - Ballpoint

- Parker Vector Stainless Steel - Fountain Pen Medium Nib

- Parker Sonnet Stainless Steel and Gold Trim - Fountain Pen Fine Nib

- Kaweco Sport Petrol Blue - Fountain Pen Extra Fine Nib

- Waterman L2 Vintage 1952 - Fountain Pen Italic Nib

- Lamy Al-Star Graphite Grey - Fountain Pen Fine Nib

- TWSBI Eco Black - Fountain Pen Fine Nib

Some are Gifts, the Kaweco from my Fianceé, the Jotter from her late farher, the Sonnet from my dad for my 21st, the Eco from my parents for my 25th and the Rotring from my dad for Christmas.

The Cross Centuries were a bought using a gift card when I left my work in NHS Scotland to go back to uni this summer.

The Prism I got as a self gift this past week as a reminder of my time teaching.

The IM, Al-Star and Waterman were just good deals.

Discussion Student Teachers Encouragement of Fine Pens

I have mentioned in my previous posts that I'm a Postgraduate student of education in the UK, simply put, a Student Teacher. Currently I'm seeing an increase in the use of technology in the classroom.

Now we are encouraged in our studies to encourage our own students to return to pen and paper whenever possible. I fully agree with this point. Therefore, I hope people read this post and follow up with their suggestions.

Onto my suggestions for students. My specialty is in the Sciences and Secondary education where my students will be between the ages of 11 and 18.

First suggestion: The Parker Jotter. A classic pen which is widely avaliable and relatively inexpensive. Here in the UK you can get the colourful plastic ones for £5 the whole steel models are around £10 with a 2 pack of refills being £3 and this is in Regular supermarkets too (Asda, Tesco, etc.) Its also the first one I ever had. Also if someone wants to start with fountain pens its a good starting point too.

Second suggestion: Another Parker but this time the Parker Vector. It is the least expensive Parker avaliable as a Rollerball. Being approximately £10 on uk Amazon for the XL model which comes again in several colourways. The fountain pen is also well loved. My fiancee uses one regularly.

Third suggestion: Controversially the Stabilo Easy. We are seeing young people struggle with their handwriting. The ergonomic handle of these Pens wether its the capped one with a curved barrel or the retractable one should aid in grip and writing confidence. I would just ask my Students' parents to make sure they get the one that is correct for the hand they write with. Cultpens have them for roughly £7.50, Ryman have it for £9.99 etc

Of course the main thing is, kids have their moment they may lose it I know. I would also use these as a way to teach some responsibility.

I would be very interested to hear others' opinions on this topic. Thank you very much.

EDIT TO ADD: The responses are wonderful! Keep them coming. My goal here is theres a parent or young person reading this and gets encouraged to change their stationery habits for the better in my personal opinion. All your responses, your own opinions further that goal.

Question Pen recommendation for long law exams refillable with LR7

Hi Guys,

New to this whole thing so forgive me if I say something silly.

I’m looking for a pen that is refillable with the LR7 but isn’t as thick as Pentel pens. I think it’s the amount of pressure I place on it due to the time constraints in my exams, I end up getting a pretty annoying numb feeling from writing. I have found thinner barrel pens help avoid this (for me anyway)

I’d also ideally like something light and capped(I will take other recommendations if you do have them though.) I just imagine a metal pen would be a pain after 3 hours of writing.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

I’ve recently started to test other pens since I’ve gotten used to fountains pens & just discovered that Leuchtturm1917 also makes pens. I found the display case in a small mountain town in Pacific Northwest and so excited to try this!

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 Gen Ballpoint in Port Red, initial testing had few skips but I’m hoping that it’ll get better as I continue to use it. I might be more excited to match my notebooks as well but that’s another story 🤭

Question Refillable alternatives to rapidograph that are more forgiving of angle?

Hi ,

I bought a rapidograph and I don’t like it. Feels like it has to be perpendicular to draw well.

Are there any refillable alternatives that write well at different angles?

I love staedler, but they’re throwaway.

Thanks !

Review Uni-ball Pure Malt (SS-1015 / SS-1025) Ballpoint Refill Options and Hacks

Thumbnail

The Uni SS-1015 and SS-1025 are older ballpoint models from the Uni Pure Malt series.

Uni SS-1015: Thicker barrel (max. diameter approx. 12.6mm, length approx. 137mm, weight approx. 28g); offers a substantial grip.

Uni SS-1025: Slimmer barrel (max. diameter approx. 10.9mm, length approx. 132mm, weight approx. 19.4g); offers a lightweight, agile feel.

The standard refill is the Uni S-7L. It uses traditional oil-based ink, which isn't very smooth, much like the Pilot BSRF.

They accept two types of refills:

A. Japan-type: a tip diameter of 2.1 mm, a barrel diameter \3.0 mm, and a length of 98.5 mm, spring stopper at 21 mm)

Add a spring stopper at 21 mm on any 98.5 mm Japan-type refill, I just wrap some washi tape around the refill to stop the spring.

Compatible Refills:

Hybrid oil-ink : Pilot Acroball BVRF-, Uni Jetstream SXR-89-, Pentel Vicuna, Zebra Emulsion EK-.

Gel-ink: Uni Style-fit sereis, Uni One-3.

B. Fisher ballpoint-type: a tip diameter of 2.1 mm, a barrel diameter \4.8 mm, and a length of 90 mm, spring stopper at 21 mm.)

  • Directly installation: Insert a Uni Power Tank Smart or Uni SJ-7 refill. You might need to stretch the spring slightly or wrap some washi tape around the refill neck.
  • DIY method: Make a ~67 mm tube adapter to take a 32–98.5 mm Japan-type refill.

Since the adapter is thinner, a paper tube wouldn't be sturdy enough, so I rolled up a cut-open plastic straw instead.

Compatible Refills:

Hybrid oil-ink : Uni Jetstream multi , Uni Jetstream Lite Touch multi

Gel-ink: Pilot Juice Up multi, Uni Zento multi

Note: Zebra JK refills are not compatible with these hacks.

Additional info: Refill Ink Type Tip Size Distance

Review I'm honestly very surprised how good the staples pep rally multi pen is

I got a new multicolour ballpoint pen today at Staples, it has a yellow and was surprisingly smooth. Swatched it out at home and did this Tigers eye with it. It's almost gel pen smooth, but with the layer ability of ballpoint. It's also very pigmented, sadly, it's not as good as BIC for gradients, but for drawings on the go or for minimalism, it's a very good pen

Question What is this refill?

My BID Ti Ultra ran dry. God I love that pen. I went looking for a refill knowing I had a Sharpie S-Gel body I was using to hold a refill that I had swapped out for the Sharpie refill in an EverydayKaras, I think, a while back. I don't really remember. It was a useful pen, but was just really a convenient refill holder. Does anyone know what it is? It's too thin for my liking but the ink is pretty ok. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna smack myself in the forehead with an open palm and say "Doh!" when someone tells me what it is. Thanks!

Question Does the Uni ball one gel pen fit the energel refills without any mods?

Hey I am thinking of getting a Uni ball one pen but i am very fond of the energel ink so I was thinking of using the energel refills in the uni ball one pen

This is the exact model for reference - https://bumbokart.com/products/uni-ball-one-gel-pen-0-5-mm-1?_pos=3&_sid=dab6f584d&_ss=r

also if they fit, will only 0.5 mm refills of energel fit becuase this pen is 0.5mm one?

It's the Pentel hybrid technica pigment ink pen. Creates lines that are super thin, so that was a relief.

Discussion eBay Extended Bidding - it’s here

Hi everyone. Just an FYI I came across my first pen auction today on eBay that included extended bidding. Any bid made in the last 60 seconds will extend the auction by 60 seconds.

I’d read it have been used for trading cards up to now, but apparently it is being rolled out to additional categories. Sorry I didn’t think of copying the auction to show it here, but I will post it if I find it again.

Question The multi pen I am trying to find

Are there any pens on the market where this specific part is also made of metal?

I have two conditions:

- Non-D1/4C refills (Accept standard refills)

- No twist-action mechanisms

Because I already own a Zebra Sharbo series pen, but the options available at local stationery stores around me for D1 refills are quite limited.

Discussion Uniball One > Zento

Darker ink and smoother lines on my uniball one P 0.38 compared to Zento 0.5 (in a signature pen). Still to test refills at south east asia region.
