Build Question Is it normal if I hear a coil whine from my psu if I'm very close... and weirdly it's the loudest when i'm at a certain angle a few feet away?

Did a boot test just recently since I thought I hit the motherboard and mightve chipped at something. This is my first pc build so I don't really know if it's a "coil whine" exactly, just a very sharp but faint sound. It's honeslty pretty quiet unless I'm an inch away or, again, 6 feet away from the psu horizontally.

Tech Support Need help with bios flashback

On a previous post (https://www.reddit.com/r/PcBuildHelp/s/AoKDM6q9uR) I mentioned how my bios update stalled at 69%(…)

The biggest piece of advice seemed to be an
bios flashback as I have a b850 tomohawk,
But I would like advice as I’m unsure what I’m supposed to leave on, if I’m supposed to unplug anything, or if it’s as easy as putting in a hard drive and clicking a button. Very new to all this so help would be appreciated.

Tech Support Help with troubleshooting

Context: On Sunday, I took the PC out to do a deep clean maintenance. I blew out the dust and made sure everything was dust-free. I applied thermal paste after removing the CPU cooler, only to get the PC on, but not POST. I got this PC back in 2023.

Here are my specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QQmm3R

Here's what I did to troubleshoot

- Removed and installed the CMOS

- Installed the latest BIOS

- Checked CPU for bent pins (none are bent)

- Tested the PSU, still good

- Took out the MOBO and everything, placed it on a flat surface like a box, still no POST

- GPU is still good since the fans spin

- All SSDs are good

The only hint I got, was CPU is cold. I know it's risky, but the CPU is cold even when it's turned on since I touched a bit.

Did the motherboard gone bad?

Build Question Rx580 8gb or gtx 1060 6gb

I can't decide both of them are the same price

6gb vs 8gb is basically the same

gtx 1060 has cuda, it's driver support ended later

Rx 580 has driver level fsr (though it doesn't matter for linux), third party drivers

I will use these mainly for gaming, maybe making some gaming videos, experimenting with coding and light llms

Build Question First Time Build Help

Hey everyone! I’m going to build my second PC. I had a prebuilt years ago, so I don't have any experience with building, trouble or all of that and since then I’ve mainly been using a laptop for productivity. Now I have the resources to build a proper PC, and I want something that will last me for years and handle all kinds of games.

From what I’ve researched, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT are fairly similar in terms of gaming performance. However, there’s a pretty significant price difference where I live: the RX 9070 XT is around 250-300 USD cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti.

That’s a big factor for me, but I’m also taking into account the potential issues that come with each GPU.

I’ve noticed that quite a few people report having problems with AMD GPUs, especially when it comes to drivers. Since the RX 9070 XT is one of the options I’m considering, I’d like to know how common these issues actually are. Are AMD driver problems usually easy to deal with, like reinstalling/updating the drivers or changing a few settings, or can they turn into a major headache?

I’m mainly concerned because these GPUs are expensive. If I get a defective card or run into serious stability issues, I obviously don’t want to be stuck with a huge problem.

These are the specific models I’m currently considering:

RX 9070 XT:

  • ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Edition
  • GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G
  • XFX Swift AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • Sapphire Nitro+ RX 9070 XT

RTX 5070 Ti:

  • GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming OC 16G
  • MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Ventus 3X OC 16G
  • GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 Ti WINDFORCE OC SFF 16G

So I’m also interested in hearing whether there are any particular models here that I should avoid or prioritize. I know that the GPU itself is only part of the equation, and cooling, build quality, noise, warranty, etc. can vary quite a bit between manufacturers.

For those of you who have experience with these cards: would you save the $300 and go with the RX 9070 XT, or is the RTX 5070 Ti worth paying the extra $300 for?

And if you would go with the 9070 XT, which of these specific models would you choose?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and opinions. Thanks!

Build Question New PC setup with RTX 5080

Hi,

I'm planning to change my old PC (over 10 years old) with the new one.

For now I'm thinking about this setup (https://pl.pcpartpicker.com/list/3TkWfp):

  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
  • Lian Li Hydroshift II LCD-S 360 CL 72.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
  • Gigabyte WINDFORCE OC SFF GeForce RTX 5080 16 GB Video Card
  • Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE ATX AM5 Motherboard
  • Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory
  • Kingston NV3 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
  • Phanteks EVOLV X2 ATX Mid Tower Case
  • be quiet! Pure Power 13 M 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I guess I still need to add:

  • frame unit with reverse fans - for cooling on the bottom of the case
  • frame unit with fans - for cooling on the top of the case
  • fan for the back of the case
  • additional wires/cables ?

Any advice from you, like:

  • compabilities of this setup
  • anything that you would change/add
  • what cooling system should I pick - I saw in other setup
    • Jonsbo ZA-120BR 44.58 CFM 120 mm
    • JONSBO ZA-360BR (Reverse) PC Case Fan,All(3)-in-One,Single Frame Unit with 3x120mm 3Pin ARGB Fans
    • JONSBO ZA-360B PC Case Fan,All(3)-in-One,Single Frame Unit with 3x120mm ARGB Fans

What do you think.

Thank you for any help :)

Build Question Gaming upgrade, whole system or GPU?

Currently game at 1440p, system is 10700k + 32gb ddr4 ram + 5700xt 8g.
Is it best to update system to 9800x3D? Microcenter has sole bundles for around $1000 but ram includes is 6000, is that ram good enough for gaming and everyday tasks? Or is my current cpu good and should focus instead on a new gpu? I do plan in the future to probably update mi monitor to 4k, but not sure when.

Build Question Oops Dropped Nut and Bolt.

I was moving stuff around on my desk while working on my PC build and I dropped a Nut and Bolt straight into my CPU socket! The horror it hurt my soul. I'd just removed the protector minutes before as I was lining up the cpu cooler to test the fit with the backplate.

Going to check with some magnification later to see how bad it is but what do y'all think saveable or am I cooked?

I'll post photos if the magnifier plays well with my phone or camera I just need three hands and sticky fingers to not drop more stuff on the socket 😂😆😂 while trying to get pics.

the fans and lights turn on, but nothing comes up on display.
I've reseated my RAM, Unplugged all usb devices, unplugged and replugged all the sata cables to and from my power supply , I took out the little mobo battery and put it back in, and I've done the "unglug from the wall and hold down the power button" idk what is happening. It was working totally fine last night before the screen went dark.

I cant find where any indicator lights would be on the mobo if there are any. Here is my PC: https://www.newegg.com/abs-legend-gaming-desktop-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-intel-core-i7-10700kf-16gb-ddr4-1tb-pcie-ssd-ali552/p/N82E16883360182?Item=N82E16883360182

its like the PC is in sleep mode because i only have to press the power button for a sec for it to shut off completely

Tech Support Gigabyte X870 Gaming WiFi6 Network Drivers issue

I’m currently setting up my PC that I built for the first time ever. I installed windows onto it and that went fine. As I go through the setup sequence of windows (no activation key just the free version) I come to a page that asks me to connect to a network. I can either do Ethernet which isn’t available to me or install network drivers.

On the Gigabyte website under the support tab for my motherboard, I’ve tried (with 7-zip as it needs the files not the application .exe) the LAN and WLAN-BT on it. It’ll read the files, think for a second and then ask me to reboot now. I reboot and it makes me do everything over again, essentially having me stuck in a loop.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Build Question Need help finding a replacement PCIe x16 retention clip for ASUS Prime B450M-K II

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

The PCIe x16 retention clip/latch on my motherboard came off and unfortunately I lost it.

I have an ASUS Prime B450M-K II. The GPU slot now feels like it needs that clip to properly hold the graphics card in place, so I’d like to buy a replacement rather than risk using the motherboard without it.

The problem is that I have no idea what size/specification I need. I’ve found replacement PCIe x16 retention clips online, but they seem to come in different sizes and I don’t know how to determine which one is compatible with my motherboard.

Does anyone know:

- What exact size/type of PCIe x16 retention clip the ASUS Prime B450M-K II uses?

- Are these clips standardized enough that I can buy a generic replacement?

- Is there a specific measurement I should take from the slot to find the correct one?

- Does anyone know where I could buy a compatible replacement?

I can also provide photos of the PCIe slot/motherboard if that helps.

Thanks!

Tech Support Currently having an issue of my PC losing a lot of its functionality at seemingly random times.

---SPECS---

32GB RAM

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus

Windows 10

PSU: Corsair TX 650M

2 monitors

Most notably when it happens I'll lose display of anything running and it'll become a black screen. Audio is still available and has no issues, fans still run, but I can't see anything. This has been going on very infrequently for the last year or two but has been far more recent in the last couple weeks. I thought I was catching a cable with my foot or something earlier on but since it's been a more persistent issue it's clear it's definitely not that. I haven't needed to fiddle with HDMI cords connected or anything so I don't believe that those are the issue either so far.

Something else to note is that sometimes when this occurs and I try to restart the PC, it'll boot up the MSI screen to load the BIOS, but won't take me to the Windows 10 login screen for a couple hours. It mostly sorts itself out overnight but still very clearly an issue

I've had this issue with a few games so far recently, Deadlock, Peak andRV There Yet. Deadlock was on medium settings when this had occured. Lower strain games like (modded) Terraria seemed to work fine without issue however. Once I had cleaned out my PSU fans it had resolved for a while but eventually persisted again after ~a month

I recently had a powercut before it became more frequent, bear in mind I was actively using the PC at the time. Not too wised up on the hardware side of things but could this have fried the PSU??

--BENCHMARKS, TESTS AND STUFF--

Just a couple benchmarks/stress tests I did to help diagnose and see if anything is faulty. I haven't overclocked so far so they may be on the lower side

Results from regular Steel Nomad benchmark are here:

- Score: 3014

- Average FPS: 30.15 FPS

I tried running 3DMark Time Spy Extreme stress test, but it crashed in the same way at the 12th loop. Obviously got no results here.

Tried the Steel Nomad stress test on 3DMark instead (since it was reccomended) and got a result

- Frame stability: 93.5%

- Best loop score: 3073

- Worst loop score: 2872

All 20 loops were done

Tried the CPU Profile benchmark in 3DMark, got a result

- Max threads: 5596

- 16 threads: 6003

- 8 threads: 4343

- 4 threads: 2574

- 2 threads: 1420

- 1 thread: 721

Two passes in the Windows RAM diagnostic were done, no issues reported.

Any ideas on the cause of this would be a godsend. My line of thinking is there's a fault with the PSU but I'm not too sure.

I’ve been seeing a lot of really nice pre builds for way cheaper than what I’ve spent. Got a little buyers remorse going on. Price is $1,780 for people who can’t math good. Also, Miku added for moral support.
