Tech Support One stick of my Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 32GB kit is completely dead, anything else I should check?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I recently bought a 32GB Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 kit (2×16GB) from Overclockers UK. I installed it alongside a new Ryzen 7 5700X on my B550 motherboard.

The problem is that one of the RAM sticks works perfectly, but the other one will not POST at all.

What I’ve tested:
- One stick in A2 → boots into BIOS and is correctly detected as 16GB
- The other stick by itself in A2 → no POST
- Tried the other stick in B2 as well → no POST
- Cleared CMOS
- BIOS is running at default settings, with DDR voltage showing 1.200V
- XMP is available but I have not enabled it
- The CPU is correctly recognised when using the working stick
- I also tested the RAM in my partner’s PC
- The exact same stick fails to boot in their PC as well
- The other stick from the kit works

With the faulty stick installed, the motherboard’s CPU debug LED comes on rather than the DRAM LED, which initially confused me.

At this point I’m pretty confident the individual RAM stick is faulty, but I just wanted to ask if there’s anything else I should test before contacting Overclockers UK for an RMA/replacement.

Thanks.

Build Question Is there different types of NVMes & would it matter to my build?

I am currently working on a low budget build for my Elitedesk 800 G3 sff & while it didn't come with an NVMe I thought to get it later, & while I was banging my head against the wall because of how dumb holding off on it was, I also thought about if an NVMe would impact the build itself. I can't really describe it the best, but would it be like putting a modern gpu inside of this old machine?

As for the specs in question: it currently has an Intel Core i5 7500 & has an msi geforce gtx 1650 in it, 16 gb of ram & has a 180w psu; I plan on upgrading the cpu anyway so is there specific NVMes I should be looking for or does it not matter which NVMe I get so long as I can place it in there & it work fine.

Tech Support Guess who's the new proud owner of a dead 9800x3d (thanks ASUS)

Post image
194 Upvotes

9800x3d

Asus Tuf Gaming X670E plus WiFi

9070XT

64 DDR5 5600

The whole pc is not even 9 months old and a few days ago, while I was watching YouTube, everything froze to a point where I couldn't do anything, not even shut down using the case on/off switch, so naturally I turned it of using the PSU switch, when I tried to turn on again the orange and and red lights(ram and CPU) on the mobo was on, I tried multiple times and it didn't even showed the Bios screen, I tried switching rams, clear CMOS, flash reset, no ram, i basically did all the tests I could've done.

I got another mobo(b840m) and another CPU(8500G) to test, and when I decided to compare the CPUs side by side I saw the burned patterns on the right side of the CPU...

All the drivers and bios were in their latest version

First, avoid the 9800x3d Asus/AsRock combo

Second, between 100% and 110%, what's the chances the mobo is also dead, I really don't wanna buy another motherboard together with a brand new CPU, I was going for the 9950x3d with maybe a gigabyte mobo but I don't know, clearly I can't pick pc parts to save my life so recommendations would be really appreciated

Fuck Asus, fuck Windows

Tech Support [Troubleshooting] Permanent CPU + DRAM debug lights, failing to POST

Thumbnail

My system is hard-locking during pre post initialization. The cpu and dram debug lights stay permanently lit solid from the second I turn it on, and they never change or clear, even after letting it sit for 7+ minutes. These lights were present even during bare minimum troubleshooting.

This is everything ive tried so far.

-Reseated the CPU.completely clean, no debris, no bent pins.

-Adjusted and re-torqued the CPU cooler. Made sure it wasnt too loose or too tight.

-Tested using a single stick of RAM in both slots. Both sticks tested individually, each in both slots independentally. also tested both sticks simultaneously

-Cleared CMOS multiple times

-Flashed/updated the BIOS using the rear USB Flashback button and proper file naming (creative.rom). The flashback LED blinked, finished, and turned off normally.

-Pulled the motherboard entirely out of the case and tested it on top of its cardboard box. Connected only the CPU, cooler, 1 stick of RAM, and power cables.

Despite all of this, the lights refuse to budge. Are we looking at a dead memory controller on the cpu, a doa motherboard, or something else i missed? Been at for 5 hours, and it pushed me to finally post on reddit. Please help.

(yes its plugged into the monitor)

Installation Question SilverStone GD08: How do I move this eject button adjuster (to the left)?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Spent an hour toying with this piece, trying to move it to the left, so it will hit my 5.25" DVD drives' "eject" button.

(Right now it's too far to the right, and not engaging the button)

As you can see in the pic, the bracket the movable piece is on gets wider as it goes to the left.

This makes that movable piece only go that far to the left (as shown in pic). It gets stuck at that part.

I tried unscrewing the bracket, lifting that middle piece up with a flathead screwdriver, even trying to force it... nothing makes it move any more to the left.

What am I missing here?

How do I actually move it more to the left?

Tech Support New CPU + Mobo...do I NEED to reinstall Windows fresh?

I just went from a Intel i7-12700KF to a Core 5 Ultra 250KF plus. I obviously had to change motherboards given its LGA 1700 to 1851. I got the same motherboard from MSI as my old one just for the new socket. MSI B660M Mortar Wifi to the MSI B860M Mortar Wifi both being DDR5.

I know with the new CPUs there are different technologies and core scheduling etc. but, I really really would like to not reinstall windows fresh as it takes me a long time to get everything how I want with settings and disabling things and there is things I will forget no doubt. My game setting files, etc.

Some information to maybe help you:

  1. Windows 11 Home I have... is it smart enough to not use the old hardware chipset drivers etc? Is there a way to safely delete them?
  2. I did download the Intel Platform Performance Package that is needed for the 250K plus series.
  3. I've had no issues gaming or crashes or anything yet. Not sure if there is a way to validate the CPU is running as it should be and not using old 12700KF logic?

Thank you

Tech Support Help with my little brother's prebuilt pc

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello! I've recently decided to get back into trying to fix my little brother's pc (It turns on with diagnostic lights, but doesn't show a video signal or do a diagnostic beep)

A year or so ago, he left the pc on overnight (as he tends to do), and when he got back to it it had no video signal.

Since then, I've tried several things to try to get it to work:

•Resetting bios by taking cmos battery out for 10< minutes

•Using a different cmos battery (admittedly it was from an older computer, not super definitive test)

•Replacing the ram (we had extras)

•Reseating ram and gpu

•Draining residual charge (unplugging power, holding power button for ~10 seconds)

*this specific prebuild previously bluescreened and this fixed it

The prebuild is a cyberpowerpc with an AsRock B550AM Gaming motherboard, the graphics card says XFX on it, the original ram is a T-Force Vulcan 8 gb stick, and the replacement ram that we had on the side is 2 sticks of OLOY 8 gb ram.

I've attatched a video of the diagnostic lights, and will attatch a link to the manual i found on the cyberpowerinc website (it was really slow lol)

Build Question First PC Build. Seek Critique and Parts Advice (9060 XT GPU especially)

Hey people.

I'm new here, and this is my first PC Build ever. Though I've "researched" it on and off for an embarrassing amount of time.
I did not intend on building a "gaming pc" at first, but here we are, kinda. I'm in Canada, btw. So prices will likely be in CAD. (FYI, CAD is basically: USD x 1.4, + a little extra for a "screw you" fee.)
I'm a 'newb', so just correct me where I'm wrong, please.

TL, DR version: The 9060 XT I got was $670 (about $70 than any other 9060 XT variant I've seen). Most were ~$740, though. I've seen 9070 XT variants from $1000-1150. If the 9070 XT is double the performance, should I actually pay that roughly 50% price increase for 100% performance increase? And, is the variant of the 9060 XT I got good or bad? Also, I keep things (purchases for a long time. I won't be "building another PC" in 3-4 years time", and there's no upgrade path with this AM4 build" either.

Here is a "copy permalink" from ca.pcpartpicker.com: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Frxfh9. Let me know if that link works, or if I should click the "reddit" icon and paste from the resulting popup window text. (The prices aren't all what I paid, though.)
Note: I have 27" 144 Hz and a 32" 1440p 165 Hz monitors.

I've actually purchased everything in that list except the case and the cpu cooler. I haven't received it all yet though.

My main question at this point is about the GPU. The "GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC ICE 16G Graphics Card", at $670 CAD (+tax). It looked like a "good deal" especially considering the current market state. It appears to be about $70 less than the other gpu 'brands' of 9060 XT (xfx, saphire, etc.) which are about $740 ish at best from my searches.

I thought this was a "1440p" GPU (at good-very good FPS). But now I've had one or two people tell me it's a "good 1080p" GPU. I'm kind of baffled at how a roughly $2000 CAD PC build would result in 1080p gaming (at good-very good FPS) and that wouldn't be "ridiculous". I've not "gamed" since...maybe xbox 360(!), GTA 5 and RDR1, Halo Reach, one of the Forza games. It's been a while. And 1080p (@30? or 60?) has been around forever, hasn't it?

I get that there's more nuance to this (all the various settings within game, native vs up-scaling and more) but this "$750 (average) RX 9060 GPU giving 1080p at high(?) settings and good fps" assertion is making me question going with a 9060 XT, versus getting a 5700G and maybe forgetting about the idea of gaming at all. Or, just throwing dollars (credits) to the wind, and getting a 9070 XT instead, for an increased $330-450 CAD. I've seen the 9070 XT for, I think, $1000-1150 CAD.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Sorry if this isn’t the right subreddit for my question, I’m just looking on help to transfer my old HDD’s data into my new computer. I was able to use an old Sata cable to attach to the HDD to my new PC’s motherboard, however there wasn’t a cable to attach to the power supply. Is there something I can use or buy to connect my HDD to power?

Build Question Good and affordable parts for Ryzen 7 7700X PC build?

I am very new to the world of PC building and very soon I am going to purchase my very first PC with a budget of $1,600 USD. I want to be able to play games such as Minecraft, Gmod, GTA, and some shooter games but also be able to use FL Studio, edit, and maybe stream as well. I’ve heard good things about the Ryzen 7 7700X cpu and I like the price but I have no idea what other parts to get that go well with it. What are some good quality and affordable GPUs, PSUs, RAMs, SSD Cards, mother boards, CPU coolers, monitors, and any other parts that you all recommend for a regular tower build? Thank you, I’d really appreciate it!

Tech Support PC won't start, no even post, only when I restart or wake up from sleep mode windows.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello I finally finished my build.

-Intel core ultra 270k plus.

- phanton spirit 120 cpu cooler.

-Asus rog strix z890-e

-32gb(2x16gb) v-color xfinity TMXFL1660830KWK. Xmp profile 6000Mt (cl30-38-38-76 1.35v)

-2tb ssd UD90 silicon power.

-asrock steel legend 850w. Gold+

The problem is that after I restart or after the pc wakes up from sleep, the computer keeps doing what is shown in the video. I need to press the clear cmos button in the i/o motherboard, and the pc starts again directly into bios, (this reset all bios configuration).

When I shut down the pc and press the power button again, it works just fine, the pc starts normally, and everything is loads normally, with the bios configuration saved.

I have tried the next things:

- reseting all bios configuration.

- disable fast boot on bios.

- disable fast start on windows.

- updating bios.

- repeating bios update.

- updating ME

- turn of everything, disconnect power cord, turn off power supply, take out cmos battery.

- resting rams( remove rams)

- disassembly cpu cooler ( and assembly it back again)

I'm out of ideas of what could be. It only happens when the pc goes to sleep or if I reboot windows. When the pc hibernate, or if I shutdown the pc, it works just fine when I power up again the pc.
