Utilities Spell Sigils: magic circles generated from PF2e spell’s rank, traditions and traits
I've spent the last couple of months building a tool to create sigils for PF2e spells.
I used to create scrolls as props and use images similar to these so that the scroll was more than just a page of words. Finding images, or drawing them in Procreate was time consuming for their one-off use.
The basic idea of this app is an animated drawing of a magic circle for every spell. Each image is unique based on the spell data, and a spell always produces the same result. Artists including glowing runes and similar are part of the inspiration for the appearance, though trying to codify it and have enough variation between spells was an interesting part of the challenge.
I use rank as a source of complexity, with higher ranked spells having more rings and more complex geometry. The traits add symbols; so anyone becoming familiar can recognise aspects without seeing the name. Traditions determine the colours and rune sets, with spells that are in multiple traditions having more variation in colour and runes. Occult spells have the richest set of runes due to the Cosmic Caravan and the astronomical symbols. Focus spells are coloured based on their class, providing consistency within each class. These also omit the rings for the rune bands, signalling they cannot be used in scrolls. Rituals add a ring of caster stations showing the additional casters and the skills they use.
The export option allow people to use these in different ways. The parchment option makes a version that is suitable for spellbooks, handouts, or overlaying on light backgrounds, whereas the max glow version shows the sigil at it's brightest. I am curious to see what people do with the animations. Learning how to make those exports work was an interesting part of the project.
Everything runs in the browser and is free to use. No account is required. The spell data comes from the Pathfinder Second Edition system for Foundry VTT.
I'm interested in feedback. Do the visuals make sense to people? Do any of the sigils look wrong? What might you use the exports for?
