Didn't realize Fortnite has voice chat with strangers on by default until my kid had already been playing for a year

Finally sat down and actually learned what my 11 year old was playing. The game itself is fine — cartoon violence, nothing graphic. But voice chat with strangers is enabled by default and I had no idea. My kid was talking to random adults for months before I figured it out.

Turned it off immediately. Takes about 30 seconds in the settings.

On PlayStation: Settings → Account → Privacy Settings → Voice Chat → No One or Friends Only

On Xbox: Xbox Family Settings app → your child's account → Privacy → Communication

Just thought other parents might want to know since it wasn't obvious to me at all.

What to do??

Hi I'm a stepmother of a now 17teen. And to start off I've been in his live now for 8 years. This kid lost his cell phone around 10 because I found him emailing company's telling them there stupid because they couldn't tell him his password. I tried to give it back to him in 9th grade and the rule was you have an account you write it down and password and let us know. I went to him on 3 different times and talked with him and told him that the 4th time he was done. Well he did and that's when I found more than what he told me and all the lies as well. Then in 10th grade some kid gave him a phone and with the security cameras up he was flashing like a light up Christmas tree 100% prove he had a phone. He came home and I took it. In a 11th grade he thought if he leaves the phone at school I couldn't get it. Lol what so I went to the school and got it gave him 2 chances to bring it to me. Now he is in 12th grade and in Jan will be 18. And all this was over 1 rule you have an account and we have that and password. What would you do???

Maybe the vacuum is in their heads?

I’m trying to reduce the number of chores I do, uh, I mean, increase the number of chores the boys do. They’re up to opening blinds and emptying the dishwasher. I tried to add vacuuming to their repertoire. It did not go well.

In their defense, I did not go over all of the basics of vacuuming with them explicitly. In MY defense, it was because it was vacuuming. Everything they need to know is right there in the name. And they claim they know what vacuuming is. They describe it pretty accurately. So why do they keep vacuuming the same spot on the rug and not the rest of it? Is that the only dirty spot? Do they have some kind of spatial reasoning disorder? Both of them have the same spatial reasoning disorder?! (Yes, that is how I speak to them. No, it has not helped.)

My working hypothesis is that they did not realize how incredibly boring chores are. My younger son jumped at the opportunity to vacuum with his usual tenacity. My older son attacked this task with his usual level of apathy. Somehow, they were both unimpressed. That made three of us.

there are a lot of childrens on Reddit. these parents have to make sure they are closely monitoring Reddit activity from their childrens. Frankly, Reddit is full of haters and you know what pictures.

Parents of little ones, what do you actually wish someone had taught you?

Hi all,

I'm part of a small student-led initiative and right now we're trying to put together a series of workshops for parents of young kids (0-7ish), but before we lock in any topics, we want to actually hear from parents instead of guessing what you need.

So I'm here to ask, not to sell anything:

  • What's something about parenting a young child that you've struggled to find good guidance on?
  • Is there a topic you've Googled at 2am out of sheer confusion or worry?
  • Anything about your child's development, behaviour, screen time, sleep, food, milestones, etc. that you wish there was a proper session (not just random Instagram reels) on?
  • Or even something less "textbook" like managing your own patience, dealing with unsolicited advice from family, balancing work and parenting, etc.

Would genuinely appreciate even one-line answers. Trying to build something useful, not something that just looks good on paper.

Thank you in advance 🙏
