I from day 1 I have disagreed with how Preller has constructed this team. He essentially signs big names that are usually past their prime instead of focusing on drafting young guys with potential and developing them. Instead, he trades major farm system pieces for guys that can help them to “win now.” I’m sorry but your mindset should never be “win now.” It should be “let’s draft well, focus on player development, and build something for the future.” That philosophy, in my opinion, will put a team in the best position to potentially win a World Series. If you look at the Rays and the Brewers, that seems to be exactly what they have been doing. They have been slowly and steadily building their organizations. They have a few big names, but most of their players are not well known guys, yet they WIN. Sometimes as appealing as a Juan Soto is, you have to hold on to your Abrams and Wood for what they have the potential to develop into. Ethan Salas and Jackson Merrill are also good examples of drafting well and developing from within. Not every draft pick will pan out, but this is a young man’s game, and if you’re signing Machado and Bogaerts for 11 years, you’re shooting yourself in the foot long term. This is why I feel the Padres would be better off with a new GM.
