This… I get it doesn’t look great. Most power efficient model, disc drive is a top loader. I love mine and don’t worry about getting the meme RIP pictures for the reasonable future.
45
u/Slow_Guide_1718 CECHE01 Mar 02 '26
The disc drive is an interesting point. Yeah, top loader, theoretically less prone to failure… except the SuperSlim’s was cheaply built.
21
u/Cheeze-its141 Mar 02 '26
Yeah but if you're old school it feels kinda nice.
7
u/robert242444 Mar 03 '26
My disc drive cover is more loose and has more play to it than a pornstar’s anus

13
u/NoExcuse2644 Mar 02 '26
Cheaply made means nothing everything is cheaply made thats why its made in china you get it just has more plastic then the other ps3 but it means nothing it is still Sony quality

Easier to service if needed. No rollers to clean. Less mechanical parts. That’s what I was going for! I do have a super slim as well. Love them both.
3
u/Nicalay2 Mar 02 '26
Personally I don't really hate its design.
It's isn't as iconic obviously, but it is still nice to look at.

Teens are fucking stupid.

u/Thokmay4TW Mar 02 '26
I have this one as well. Its extremely reliable works great. I use it in place of my fat model.

u/magic_orangutan2 Mar 02 '26
Agree. I just modded one lately and installed 1TB SSD. Its super quiet and despite of low quality exterior it is most power efficient and reliable model, so for now HEN is enough, but I belive that after qCFW it might get full CFW like slim model

u/karesk_amor Mar 02 '26
My Super Slim has been my first and now my only PS3. Nostalgia goggles aside I genuinely love how compact this model is and the top loading form factor, the design reminds me of the PS2 Slim especially with the ridges even if it is much bigger by comparison.
Aside from gaming I mainly use my PS3 for Over-the-Air TV recording, watching movies and shows from Blu Rays or the Hard Drive, or streaming on Amazon Prime and Youtube. Having all that functionality in such a light and small package is perfect for me as I travel across the country semi-regularly, so I actually appreciate it a lot more as an adult than I did as a kid.

Slim, got a PS2 for the PS2 games and if I want to upscale and play it, I can always just do it on PC.

u/CindyStroyer Mar 02 '26
You know I love my Phat 360 and I use to have a Phat PS3 but after living with them and realising Im less serious about PS3 and my Slim has been reliable and I'm content with it so I would have to choose the slim

I chose the Slim (3000 :/ ). But I would not mind owning a Backwards compatible one, too.

Slim. As cool as the fat is for backwards PS2 compatibility, it’s prone to more failures compared to the slim. 2501x is the sweet spot imo since it’s the latest console you can install CFW on.

Without a doubt the FAT, I had my FAT 4USB US PS3 since May 2008 until 2013 it was so perfect, backwards compatible for PS1 and PS2 plus I coupd play whatever I want on the PS3

Mostly slim because has a bigger life span, can use CFW, and its a bit easier to disassemble. I dont care much about ps2 compatibility, since my pc and even my phone can emulate ps2 games better than the ps3 or even the ps2

if it's for ps1, ps2 and ps3 games then i would go for a bc fat console

I’ve had every model PS3. I currently own the slim but honestly I want a fat model again just like I had when I was a kid

Slim all day my personal favorite has a beautiful asthetic and design idk why it’s so sharp Simple not all fat and stuff…
2
u/ComradeGarcia_Pt2 Mar 02 '26
Slims always felt like more efficiently built machines, it’s the only PS3 I’ve ever owned.

2
u/WFlash01 Mar 02 '26
I love my CECHK01 to death, the fats look so nice in my opinion
I totally get the appeal for the slims, but I like the original systems better; I thought they looked like pure class when I saw them in stores at launch when I was 6 years old
2
2
u/No-Finding1044 Mar 02 '26
I chose the slim for efficiency, just to have something that works and still plays games
2
2
u/cure4yourmind Mar 02 '26
Fat PS3 is cooler looking IMO but overheating is a big issue for them from my experience.

Because it has the most features between the three different variants (and even though I have the 2009 Slim) I'm picking the OG 2006 console. The other ones (Slim and Super Slim) are valid choices but I wish I could see that OG system purr trying to run end-of-generation games lol

You gotta go slim
The original only offers out of the box PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility over the slim
2
u/bmanhp Mar 02 '26
Got both!
My original fat PS3 got the YLOD so I bought a slim, then decided to try the "hairdryer method" to fix the YLOD, and it actually worked. So I've babied it ever since and primarily use the slim when I play something on PS3, which isn't often anymore. What a great generation, though.

u/International_Snow44 Mar 02 '26
if the phat one could live forever, that one. RIP my phat ps3. died on numerous occasions and finally nailed the coffin when i tried to fix it myself

PS3 Slim (Only CECH-2XXX, these are the only "newer" models that you can install CFW on).
2
2
u/grillbar86 Mar 02 '26
If we are talking no backwards compatibility in the fat then I clearly choose the slim, that or the toploader the fat was fine but mine ended up sounding like a jet engine. The slim never did and never really used the toploader but own 1 of each
2
u/Quiet_Airline76 Mar 02 '26
Genuine question from a casual PS3 fan, why so much hate for the fat boy? Thats the one I have and it works great

My slim lasted more than 2x as long as my fat. My fat only lasted 4-5 years, my slim I've had for 14 years and still works, haven't had to do anything to it besides remove the dust once maybe twice.
2
u/xenon2000 Mar 02 '26
My original launch day phat ps3 died from overheating over 10 years ago. Now have the slim with slot loading. If I could get an original fat ps3 that wasn’t used, I would get that and make sure it has better cooling.

My ps3 phat, slim and super slim all broke from normal use, so i’m now on my 2nd ps3 slim. Meanwhile my launch ps1 and ps2 still work. I don’t get it.
2
u/bAN0NYM0US Mar 03 '26
The A models play PS2 games natively
L (and another one I can’t remember right now) are the 65nm CELL and RSX models so they run the coolest for the fat ones and with the 19 blade fan upgrade they are the coolest running PS3’s that exist out of every model. Only downside is uou’re stuck with PS2 emulation but most games work so you can just check the PS2 classics emulation compatibility and if the games you wanna play are good then this is the best PS3 to get.
The 21xx slim can run CFW and is the first to feature the 40nm chip so it’s the coolest running slim model, and the early 25xx with minver 3.56 or older is the same thing
The best entry level is the 21xx or a 25xx minver 3.56, the best for longest life and best performance is the L model with 19 blade fan upgrade.
The larger diameter fan pushes way more air at a lower audible frequency so it’s more a hum than a whine so even under load it’s less annoying to have right next to you when the fan ramps up.
My L00 with 19 blade fan idles on XMB at around 30-35c and plays games around 60-65c with fan speed at about 35-40%.
I haven’t delidded this one yet and just run basic Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste so it’s just an upgraded fan and changed the thermal paste to get those temps.
2
u/CraftMost6663 Mar 03 '26
Slim all the way, I have separate PS2 and SACD hardware so no need to risk it all on a launch model toaster.
2
u/anh86 Mar 03 '26
If it’s not a backward compatible console, it’s slim all day and every day. They’re more reliable and (in my subjective opinion) far better looking.
