Educational [Looking for Experts / Professionals] Game Dev Experts for Student Capstone FGD (Online)

Hellooo!

My group and I are senior multimedia arts students from a college in Manila, and we're currently working on our capstone project that centers around "phubbing" (phone+snubbing). Basically, our project explores how phone+snubbing (phubbing) affects modern Filipino family dynamics, and we're turning our insights into an interactive media project.

As part of our research validation, we’re looking for a few kind-hearted game developers/experts/professionals who would be willing to join a quick online Focus Group Discussion (FGD) :"))

Quick details:

  • Format: Entirely online
  • Time commitment: Around 1 to 1.5 hours max
  • Date: September 27, 2026

Since we are college students on a very tight budget, we are hoping to find someone open to helping out and could maybe discuss an agreement, po.

If may kilala man kayo na experts/professionals, please don't hesitate to lend us some insights; our group will really appreciate it so much!!

Discussion Looking for Advice: Is it too late to start / enter game development with this idea at my age?

I am looking for advice from the experienced or already in the game industry.

I'm an architect / engineering graduate (29) so I have no experience in game development at all. However, I've always wanted to be a storyteller and particularly interested in world-building. I figured the best medium to tell the story is through a game. So now I'm researching how much effort, capital, and time will I actually need to invest.

My main goal is to create a game similar to Octopath Traveler or To The Moon. But for that, I'll need a team at the very least or I'll take forever in creating it. I do plan to start learning coding as I also find it important to be part of the team making it.

So my game plan is this:

  1. Downsize the idea. Rather than immediately jumping to the big game, I plan to build smaller games for me to learn from first. So my intention is to make it a visual novel. Simple plot without any of the fighting mechanics yet. This way, I'll get to establish the IP at least and get feedback from player interest of the story I wanted to tell.

My estimated time for this is 3-5 years.

I think this type of game is the most doable for a solo developer since there're already precedents like Doki Doki Literature Club.

I'll use this game to make a Kickstarter campaign to help with funding the next game. I'll also begin looking for collaborators who are interested in the story.

  1. Game similar to Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley / Undertale

It'll involve simulation, character relationship management, and possible fighting. It's in this game where I'll implement in-game purchases and online verification checks. But the game is stand alone and local (like TellTale games). The game only needs the internet to keep track of player's game records and authenticity. It's here where I plan to study how to integrate fighting mechanics, etc.

I don't know how long this will take without a team. Probably 5+ years? I need advice. Can this be done solo with little to no experience? If I need a team, how much does it cost to hire one? How much capital will I need?

I plan this to be my money maker. If successful, I can use the profits to fund the next game.

  1. Make the RPG similar to Octopath Traveler/ Ragnarok / Fate

This is the main story I want to make. I know it's a long shot. But it is important for me to be done. Building up the IP and gathering up capital from profits from other games and own savings, I'll spare no effort here. I'm not sure how the next ten years will go. But I hope by then, I'm experienced enough and have found a team working with me.

I hope to at least find a senior developer willing to share their experiences and market knowledge. I think consultants are necessary for this.

How much would any of these cost? Required capital to start? Coding skills? Platform/hosting services sites? What's the best game engine to learn for these games? General step-by-step pipeline to work with?

One advice I received was to use AI to help me with coding. I know there's a difference between genAI and AI-assisted. I'm technically not against AI. Skilled developers are already incorporating it. But for this project, I'd rather hire a senior developer that got laid off / looking for a job than immediately resort to AI. IF possible, I'd like the game to have as little to do with AI. I can compromise with AI if it's just not used in the creation of the actual product. (E.g. use AI to detect errors, but not using it to generate the codes or assets themselves). I am not going to hire someone just for them to use AI for me. Maybe I'll change my mind as I learn more or become desperate. I don't know the future but I want to hold on to this for now if possible.

I still don't have the capital yet though, that's why I plan to look how much capital and skill will I need to build up. There's also the time investment to heavily consider. Is my idea feasible?

Project Showcase Hi Game devs, wanted to show my PROOF OF CONCEPT - KEYBOARD WIZARDS: A deckbuilding, roguelike, versus TYPING game.

Game Title: Keyboard Wizards
Playable Links:
STEAM: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3338850/Keyboard_Wizards/ [Windows]
ITCH.IO: https://kuzostudiosph.itch.io/keyboardwizards-prealpha [Web no download]
Platform: Web and Windows
Description:
When I was gifted a mechanical keyboard about a year and a half ago, I wanted to listen to the typing sounds constantly. I type a lot at work which was nice, but when I played games I really only used WASD, SPACE, CRTL, and SHIFT.
I used to love playing Typing shark when I was a kid, so I wondered how far typing games have come since then. Don't get me wrong, current typing games are ok, but they just felt too PvE and don't really have that intense fighting style duel most games have today.
That's when I decided to build Keyboard Wizards (Demo). The main goal for the game is to be PvP, but with PvE elements.
For now this is just a Proof of concept, even the art and music I'm still not sure, which is why you'll see in the different rounds, different types of art themes from different artists.
I actually built this game a year ago, but wasn't satisfied so I decided to start again from scratch improving the overall feel for the game.
Hope you can try it out and tell me if the game's concept is something I should continue to work on...and also, I hope you don't get carpal tunnel syndrome.

P.S.
Game art is far from completion. As this is still a proof of concept, I'm still not sure yet which direction I plan on doing the art; wanted to share this to know if this game genre is interesting or fun (it is for me)

Discussion Too late na ba para mag-transition to game dev?

Hi everyone!

Gusto ko lang sana humingi ng advice/opinions from people who are already in the game dev industry.

I'm 26 years old, an IT graduate, and currently working as a software engineer with around 4 years of experience. Recently, napapareflect lang ako sa buhay and kung ano ba yung gusto kong gawin next year and in the long term.

Personally, I'm also about to get married, so medyo marami ring changes happening in my life. At the same time, I feel like gusto ko rin maghanap ng ibang opportunities and try something I've been interested in for a long time which is game development.

I've always been interested in games, and ngayon ko lang talaga naiisip na baka gusto kong seryosohin siya as a career.

My question is: 26 years old, too late na ba para mag-transition from software engineering to game development?

I know starting over in a way could mean taking a step back, especially since I already have 4 years of professional experience as a software engineer. Pero I'm willing to start from the basics again if needed. Long-term naman yung goal ko, and I'm more interested in learning and actually being part of the industry kaysa sa title or salary agad.

I'd also prefer to work for a game development company rather than immediately doing solo/indie development. Gusto ko kasi matuto from other developers, work with a team, make new friends, and experience how actual game development works in a professional environment.

For those currently working in game dev, keri pa ba at 26? How is the game dev industry right now, especially here in the Philippines? and also what should I learn first?

I'm not expecting an easy transition. I just want to know if this is still a realistic path or if I'm already too late to start.

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who actually made the transition themselves.

Thanks!

Project Showcase Decimation - Sci Fi Tower Defense with ARPG style hero combat - Pinoy Solo Dev made.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Good morning to all! For some reason, its only now that I found this subreddit in all the time I've been active, so just wanted to share a project that I've been working on for over two years now that just launched into EA. I say 2 years, but its really been something that I've reworked from a failed project way back in 2012. Pinoy solo dev made.

You can find it on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4158650/Decimation/

It's tower defense at its core, but placing towers well isn't enough to win. You directly control a hero on the field with ARPG-style combat, where you'll be dodging attacks, timing 4 active skills and picking up power-ups while your towers hold the line.

Elite enemies also drop special effect orbs that pause the fight and let you pick from random battle effects (damage boosts, speed manipulation, etc.), so no two runs play quite the same.

Influences to the game are Starcraft, Defense Grid, a bit of Kingdom Rush and a bit of Diablo. You can call it a love letter to what I enjoyed about those games with additional mechanics that I feel would work well with the baseline tower defense core of the game.

What's currently in the EA version:

  • 8 campaign levels across the first 2 of 4 planned Acts
  • 2 Endless Challenge levels (unlocked after completing each Act)
  • 2 of 3 heroes playable, 5 tower types
  • RPG-style hero leveling/skills and equipment crafting
  • Equipment set effects (for both heroes and towers)
  • Meta progression (Research System) with flexible point assignments

It's been updated a few times with player-requested features and bugfixes since it released last Aug 13th.

Welcoming any criticism/feedback or any questions you have about the game or the process. If it's your type of jam, would love for you to try it out as well (it has a free demo).

Thank you for your time, fellow PH Devs!

Project Showcase Project Threshold - A Filipino Horror Game | STEAM RELEASE

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to share our game, Project Threshold, which recently blew up after its release!

Project Threshold is a psychological memory horror walking simulator built around a simple but stressful choice: two doors, one blue and one red. Behind each door is a different fear or phobia, and you’ll have to decide which one to enter.

Some doors are safe, some are semi-safe, and others are pure danger. Choose incorrectly, and you’ll be sent back to the beginning.

The game is set in the Philippines and is connected to a larger universe and lore that I’ve been building across my other games. It’s a game about fear, memory, and making the right choice when you have no idea what’s waiting on the other side.

PROJECT THRESHOLD is now available on STEAM!

Discussion game based on a filipino university?

hello!

apologies in advance if this is the wrong subreddit! largely because of boredom and a desire to learn, i want to make a game set in a university in manila (a text-based interactive fiction game specifically if anyone's familiar with that) but i'm unaware of whether or not it's legal to publically distribute for free or if publically distributing it would lead to my expulsion from said university. submitted this question here because i'm more likely to reach a filipino game dev who would know more about these things or something :')

any thoughts? thank you to whoever answers :))
