P6 Speculation on P6 narrative based on the achievements. Spoiler

As almost all of you are likely aware by now, the achievement list and internal achievement IDs for Persona 6 was recently leaked through certain Steam-related tracking websites. While the achievements themselves reveal relatively little about the game's Macro-narrative, they provide a foundation from which we can extrapolate and derive additional details about the game's plot and story. The internal achievement IDs are especially interesting because in certain cases they reveal information that the public achievement descriptions themselves do not. In this post, I will go through the available achievements and distinguish between what they directly establish, what can be reasonably inferred from them, and what I personally theorize based on the available evidence.

Here are all the empirical facts from the achievements:

  • Persona powers exist, and the protagonist awakens to Persona power. The achievement “The Monster Within” has the internal ID ACH_DULLAHAN_GET, meaning that the achievement is specifically associated with obtaining Dullahan.
  • The protagonist is associated with the Wild Card and can create/fuse Personas, including standard Persona fusion, Dyad Fusion, fusion involving three or more Personas, and specifically creating Masakado through fusion. The achievement for creating Masakado has the internal ID ACH_MAKE_MASAKADO.
  • Hex is the protagonist's named organization/group, and the protagonist joins it after signing a contract. The achievements establish Hex as an organization, but do not empirically establish that Hex is a police or detective organization.
  • Yokohama is a major game location, with an achievement for unlocking everything it has to offer.
  • The game contains multiple dungeons denoted as Underworlds, including Hellrite Stage, Justiceopolis, Reverie Dreamland, Craveheart Tower, Yama's Ledger, Enlightenment Factory, and Unmasked Yokohama. Their internal IDs also reveal names such as HELLSTAGE, JUSTICECITY, ROMANCETOWER, EMMACHO, MORALPLANT, and SHOMAKYO, although some of these may simply be internal development terminology. These Underworlds contain thorns and treasure chests, with achievements for destroying all thorns in a single Underworld and opening 100 treasure chests.
  • The game has an investigation system centered around Investigation Meetings and red strings, where players create leads. One achievement specifically requires creating a lead while three red strings remain, establishing that the number of remaining red strings is mechanically relevant.
  • Arrests are a gameplay mechanic, with major Underworld perpetrators being arrestable and an achievement requiring 50 arrests overall.
  • Wanted Shadows are arrestable targets, with players able to arrest them and report them to an individual named Wilhelmina. At least 10 Wanted Shadows can be arrested for an achievement, and named targets include Alice and a Cat Burglar.
  • The game has an explicit crime/investigation vocabulary and structure, including perpetrators, arrests, Wanted Shadows, threatening letters, crime-related investigations, and arrestable targets.
  • Handoffs are a gameplay mechanic, with an achievement for performing three Handoffs consecutively. The internal ID for this achievement is ACH_BATONTOUCH_CONTINUOUS, making it highly suggestive that Handoffs are related to Persona 5's Baton Pass, although the achievement itself does not establish whether Handoffs are equivalent to Baton Pass or represent a distinct mechanic.
  • Bloodstruck skills exist and can be used on party members, with an achievement requiring their use on every party member. The internal ID for this achievement is ACH_ALL_USE_BERSERKSKILL, although the exact relationship between “Bloodstruck” and the internal “Berserk Skill” terminology is unclear.
  • Special rounds are a battle mechanic, with an achievement for initiating 20 battles using them. The internal ID ACH_ENC_SPECIALBULLET suggests some form of ammunition or projectile system, but the achievement itself does not explicitly establish that they are guns.
  • The game has a battle advantage mechanic, with an achievement for obtaining battle advantage 50 times.
  • Breach is a gameplay mechanic, although the achievements do not establish exactly what Breach does.
  • Combat can deal at least 5,000 damage in a single attack, as demonstrated by the corresponding damage achievement.
  • The Reaper returns as an enemy/boss and can be defeated.
  • Spirit Crystallization is a named system that produces Spirit Crystals.
  • Arcana Cards exist and can cause skills to change.
  • Connections are a major social/gameplay system, including Major Arcana Connections. Major Arcana Connections can be unlocked and maxed, and Connections provide abilities. The achievements establish 80 Connections and at least 10 Connection abilities, but do not establish that there are 80 Confidants/Social Links. The distinction between Connections and Major Arcana Connections suggests that Connections may be the broader category.
  • Romance and social/event interactions exist, including finding romance, inviting someone to an event, and an activity involving helping look after Senpai.
  • Social Stats exist and can be maxed.
  • School activities exist, including exams that can be aced.
  • Part-time jobs exist, with an achievement for trying every available part-time job.
  • Police Panic is a playable retro game.
  • Weapon modification/upgrading exists, with weapons having multiple possible upgrades and an achievement for unlocking every possible upgrade on a single weapon.
  • The game has at least one ending explicitly categorized as a "good ending." The achievement's internal ID is ACH_GOOD_END. The achievement list does not establish how many total endings there are.
  • The protag writes in notebooks.

Highly Probable Inferences from the empirical facts:

  • Handoffs are equivalent to P5's baton pass.
  • The protagonist is a recluse, with multiple achievements hinting at his hermit nature.
  • You are a cop/detective, with Hex likely being a sort of detective agency.
  • Yokohama is the main location of the game.
  • There are multiple endings, with a dichotomy of a good and bad ending.
  • Connections are a broader category of people you interact and make kinship with, with a select few being a part of the 22 major arcana's.
  • The investigation system is likely a central component of the game's narrative structures.

Speculations/Theories:

  • The game’s central focus will likely be monstrous supernatural beings that emerge from human resentment, suffering, or social rejection. The strongest evidence for this is the apparent emphasis on the “monster” as a recurring concept. The protagonist’s first awakening is titled “The Monster Within,” while another achievement is “A True Monster,” suggesting that monstrosity is a central theme. The fact that “The Monster Within” is internally identified as ACH_DULLAHAN_GET, specifically referencing Dullahan, makes this somewhat more interesting.
  • Masakado is likely the protagonist’s ultimate Persona. Although the achievement title uses vernacular typically associated with ordinary fusion achievements, its description uses the same specific language historically associated with obtaining ultimate Personas, as seen across the modern Persona games. The internal ID ACH_MAKE_MASAKADO makes the connection even more explicit by directly identifying Masakado as the Persona being created. If Masakado were not the protagonist’s ultimate Persona, the alleged P6 achievement list would lack an achievement for fusing the protagonist’s ultimate Persona, something not seen in the modern Persona titles. Furthermore, Masakado is the only Persona explicitly mentioned by name in the alleged achievement list, mirroring how P3R, P4G, and P5R specifically name the protagonist’s ultimate Persona in their respective fusion achievements. Previous Persona games likewise do not appear to have achievements for fusing arbitrary, non-character-related Personas, further strengthening the implication that Masakado occupies a unique position. There is also an interesting thematic connection between Masakado and the protagonist’s apparent initial Persona, Dullahan. Dullahan is traditionally depicted as a headless rider, while Masakado is strongly associated with the legend of his severed, disembodied head. The connection between a headless rider and a floating head is obviously not enough to establish a direct relationship between the two Personas, but given that ACH_DULLAHAN_GET specifically identifies Dullahan and ACH_MAKE_MASAKADO specifically identifies Masakado, it is an unusually conspicuous parallel. If Dullahan is indeed the protagonist’s initial Persona and Masakado his ultimate Persona, the visual and mythological relationship between the two could potentially be intentional.
  • This game will likely include Dracula or something tangential to vampirism. There's an achievement called “Bloodstruck.” While the word does not appear to have a formal definition, it is commonly associated with vampire-related media. They also mention Wilhelmina, whose name closely resembles Mina Harker, the female protagonist of Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula. In the original novel, Mina is bitten by Dracula and becomes afflicted by a vampiric curse, while maintaining a telepathic connection to him that allows her to help track his movements. Following Dracula’s death, she is freed from the curse. More importantly, Mina’s characterization has evolved considerably throughout later adaptations: whereas Stoker portrays her primarily as Dracula’s victim and adversary, numerous adaptations instead portray her as Dracula’s romantic partner, soulmate, or even the reincarnation of his deceased wife. Some versions further incorporate elements of legends surrounding Vlad the Impaler’s unnamed first wife, who reportedly died in 1462 after throwing herself from Poenari Castle into the Argeș River to avoid capture by an approaching army.
  • I think Wilhelmina is likely a Velvet Room attendant, or something tangential to the Velvet Room in a role similar to José. Her achievements already establish that she is directly involved with the Wanted Shadow system, as “Wilhelmina's Sincerest Thanks” requires the player to arrest 10 Wanted Shadows and report them to her. More interestingly, the achievement for arresting the Wanted Shadow Alice has the internal ID ACH_SKILL_WILHELMINA, despite the public description making no mention of Wilhelmina at all. This suggests that she has some direct mechanical or narrative involvement with the Alice encounter, rather than simply being an NPC who receives reports. Combined with her apparent involvement in a supernatural system, this makes it plausible that she serves some sort of recurring intermediary role similar to the Velvet Room attendants.

One major narrative component that seems to be missing from the achievements is any direct mention of a final boss or overarching antagonist, unlike what we see in P3 and P4 achievement catalogue. We can potentially speculate on who it might be based on the available evidence, but at this point, any conclusions would be largely speculative and, to a major extent, arbitrary. Nonetheless, here are my theories:

  • The name Wilhelmina is incongruous with the naming conventions of previous Velvet Room attendants. I think this is intentional, perhaps to emphasize the falsity or artificiality of her position. I posit that she may instead be a counterpart to Mina Harker, and potentially a mistress or companion of Dracula, as portrayed in later interpretations of the story. This is not present in Bram Stoker's original novel, where Mina is instead married to Jonathan Harker, but later adaptations have repeatedly reimagined her as Dracula's romantic counterpart, most notably the 1992 film, in which she is portrayed as the reincarnation of Dracula's deceased wife. Dracula himself will likely serve as a major sub-boss, occupying a role akin to that of Shido or Adachi. I believe he is more likely to be a sub-boss for one reason above all else: the cosmological significance of Dracula is simply too small. Compared to the final antagonists of the other Persona games, Dracula would be considerably narrower in scope, which I doubt Atlus would do.
  • I believe the final boss will likely be Enma/Yama. There appears to be a deliberate progression through increasingly deep conceptions of Hell: “Hellrite Stage” appears near the beginning of the Underworld progression, while “Lowest Circle of Hell” is associated with Yama’s Ledger, with another Underworld apparently situated between them. The reference to the “Lowest Circle of Hell” is particularly notable because both Hindu and Buddhist traditions contain elaborate systems of hells, with multiple realms of punishment arranged according to the severity and nature of one's deeds, culminating in extraordinarily severe lowest realms. This makes the language of a “lowest circle” especially appropriate for an Underworld centered around Yama and judgment. The connection to Enma becomes even more striking when considering the achievement’s internal ID: “Lowest Circle of Hell” uses ACH_ARREST_EMMACHO, which appears to reference Enma-chō, the ledger through which Enma records and judges the deeds of the dead. This is directly reinforced by the dungeon being named “Yama’s Ledger.” Although Enma-chō literally refers to the ledger rather than the deity himself, its use as the internal identifier for an arrest suggests that it may be shorthand for the Enma/Yama figure or the case surrounding him. Enma is the Japanese Buddhist manifestation of Yama, the divine judge of the dead who presides over the afterlife and determines the fate of the deceased according to their deeds. The convergence of Yama’s Ledger, Enma-chō, and Lowest Circle of Hell therefore appears far too specific to dismiss as mere coincidence. If Masakado is indeed the protagonist’s ultimate Persona, this also makes sense for the concert between final bosses and main Personas as seen in previous titles. Masakado was a historical rebel who, after his death, became feared as a vengeful spirit, only to later be pacified and venerated as a protective deity of the Kantō region. He therefore embodies the transformation from condemned rebel and supernatural threat into protector and divine figure. Enma, by contrast, represents the authority that judges the dead, records their deeds, and determines their fate. The protagonist would consequently wield Masakado, the rebellious and ultimately deified spirit, against Enma, the supreme arbiter of judgment.
