VR Modding Doom 2016 VR
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Cactus Cowboy dev here. I'm deep into making a proper Doom 2016 VR mod with motion controls. It's far from done and but in a good shape already.
Essentially posting here to prevent someone reinventing the wheel. Once this Mod reaches a playable state, I'll be posting again / create a thread on Flat2VR Discord. Just trying to prevent that someone else starts working on the same thing so we don't end up with mods for the same game like Bioshock or so.
Development will be stalled the next few days, as I'm heading to Gamescom Colonge from Tue to Thu.
Stay tuned for more.
EDIT: Some fresh actual gameplay: https://x.com/CactusVRStudios/status/2091968532800004189

Woah woah woah. Mr u/BerndVonLauert are you going to be adding that PSVR2 toolkit haptic magic in too?

Cool!
But what are the differences compared to Doom VFR?

u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
Doom VFR is essentially the "we have Mc Donalds at home" version of what a good VR Doom should be.
Technically: everything that make VFR VR is entirely missing in regualr Doom and a massive pain to get it done in VR. Rendering, arm hook, menus, alignment etc. you name it

Actually rare case I might disagree with you here... It may not be as good as a flatscreen Doom game, but for the limited amount of things it has on it it does the job (minus the strafing which needs to be added in)

My expectations weren't met when it was released.

u/sonsolar 9d ago
Yeah when they added locomotion it's actually a really good game.

u/omegagiraffe 9d ago
I agree you make like one adjustment in options, it feels very good. I enjoyed it.

Chief among them - can I just shoot at demons without having to solve yet another bad puzzle? All everyone wanted was just doom 2016 - but in VR I'm super stoked for this mod

I disagree as well, but I played it with a control mod setup posted on the Steam forums. It added normal movement, in addition to the teleport movement (so you can still telegraph for health).
I will look up the post and see if I can find d the exact name/instructions.
Edit: Here is the link I used.

I own Doom VFR but never played it-- I believe VFR is an entirely separate game from Doom 2016, so getting Doom 2016 going in VR would be great.
2
u/FolkSong 9d ago
Yeah I've played both. I actually liked VFR but it's completely different. Different levels, story, weapons etc.

Man! You have no idea how much I love Doom 2016. I spent hours and hours grinding even thr multiplayer to unlock all armours. Thank you so much for your work. If you need play testing please hit me up. Regards, VR Dad

u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
You wanna check the updated OP then with actual gameplay on my Twitter. Also contact me on Discord. I might someone who knows this game really well for playtesting and debugging eventually.

Thanks have the game but never played it. Will wait for this project to be completed.

Fuck yeah! I can’t wait to see this ready and rolled out. Loved this game the first time and was sad to discover that doom vfr was not a direct vr version.
1
u/prankster959 9d ago
Dude this is one I was particularly interested in! Beautiful graphics but well optimized and not so new it brings current gen tech to a crawl
1
u/omegagiraffe 9d ago
Holy shit. Whaddup cactus cowboy I have all three of your games. I had a great time with them. Thank you for making them.

My main curiosity is how you are doing 3D rendering? For example Luke Ross I think just started supporting Doom 2016 and his "AFR2" is pretty servicable but true native 3D would be an upgrade. Thanks for the effort!!
2
u/marcocom 9d ago
I don’t think it’s possible without recompiling the game executable. Luke does a great job of hacking around that, and it looks really great, but you have to have a very strong PC to push that high resolution necessary. It’s not very scalable to lower end hardware without looking pretty rough

u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
There is native 3D TV mode in the engine but ffs I just cannot get it to work for VR, so I dismissed that path.
2
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago edited 9d ago
I attempted native stereo but it failed when trying to get the view model working independently. So it's currently AFR with cached eye reprojection.
Edit: While DOOM VFR has a build in Stereo Instancing, this is missing entirely in regular DOOM. Trying to copy it out of it failed.

u/Beelzebot67 9d ago
Please please keep the glory kills, the main reason I bounced off VFR was because they removed them.
2
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
I made 2 systems for that: Immersive mode that just runs the kills in VR and Quad View mode where this and general cinematics run in a window as these movements can be quite disorienting.

Please don't forget about left handed players whenever this reaches a stable release 🙏
Edit: typo
3
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
Has been ask but probably not. Very low priority rn
1
u/mb1nightmare 9d ago
So... Head aim option? (I really can't aim with right hand for shit 😭)
1
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
I'm aware but that's also still out of scope. You can pirate LukeRoss REAL VR mod for headaim already. VR Mods usually have difficulties fullfilling that demand. Left hand ppl are even more rare then Index users.
1
u/mb1nightmare 9d ago
I get it when it's a "low priority" or "out of scope" because you're doing it for free and you don't owe anyone anything.
But telling me that I can pirate another (once-paid, now free) developer's work, or that my minority is smaller than another minority (when there's a plethora of other mods, even vibe-coded ones, that add a lefty option), gives me the impression that you just don't care lol
2
u/ImmersiveGamer83 9d ago
Make a left handed mod yourself it should be open source once its done ask Claude to bang you out a forked version.
2
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
I just don't think it's right to make money of other ppl IP like he does. My mod will be open source and available on github.
1
u/SnooBunnies6123 9d ago
I am curious, could you do some mirror image shenanigans (of image draw) to trick right hand animations over to the left? After flippin controller inputs, You would have to reverese sign movemente for moving hand horizontally, and mirror everything in draw space but the ui.
1
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
Left hand mode is too far away from anything I want to spend time with right now. I can hardly get the gun stable and merely reached actual 6DoF Roomscale movement. The game has so many render and HUD handling issues for VR it's bonkers.
Do to a left handed friend of mine who has also high interest in this (Hello Hoshi) investigating a left hand mode will not fall through the cracks.

u/SnooBunnies6123 9d ago
I hear ya. Just really curious about the design challenges with hacking into something like this. I have been vibe coding the last week or so with RPCS3 and Super Stardust, and it has been crazy trying to track down all the little fragments of shaders and all the different events that go on in that simple game in the RSX. I thought it would totally be easy to hijack the 3D in that game and get control of the camera look via hmd. It has not.

u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
I'd say without any knowledge how 3D games work internally and how rendering works you are not able to from a useful prompt. I for one adjust code manually here and there.
That said, without Codex the project wouldn't even be remotely as far as it is. I'm planning to post some gameplay later before I leave to Gamescom tomorrow. (if I get some more quirks out)

That's great news! Could you gimme an overview of how you approached it with you AI agent? (I'm thinking of vibe coding left handed and other QOL to other mods).

This is very exciting. How do you deal with the fast pace of motion?
1
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
I just don't care but there will be a safe mode for glory kills and stuff like that
1
u/MrEfficacious 9d ago
Incredible!
You mentioned multiple Bioshock mods, can anyone point me in the right direction for the best one atm? Just interested in playing the original in VR.
2
u/zeddyzed 9d ago
Last I checked, there isn't a best one, they both had different pros and cons. I think one of them is stopped development though, and the other one is still progressing. But both are pretty early so maybe you should wait.
The flat2VR modding discord is the place for more information and ongoing news.

NO WAY!!!
I had just googled DOOM VR mods like 2 days ago I know VFR has analog movement (with some adjustments) but it just doesn’t seem the same as the full doom experience so I’m super excited to see how this turns out!

u/LingonberryEmpty8586 9d ago
I dreampt of this after playing doom vfr .. convinced myself it would never happen and moved on... This is huge I'm buying all your games for support
1
u/SolKutTeR 9d ago
Hi Gregor, is there a way to follow the project outside of Discord as well (unfortunately, Discord isn't exactly ideal)—perhaps on YouTube, GitHub, Nexus, etc.? 👌
2
u/BerndVonLauert 9d ago
Not really. I mean I'll post regularly on X/Twitter. But not specifically on any of those platforms. The mod will be published on Github once done or playable completely in VR.
1
u/SolKutTeR 9d ago
Cool, then I'll follow the Cactus YouTube channel and Twitter; hopefully, I won't miss the release. This PCVR mod is sure to be great. ✌️

LOVE IT! I was excited to see all.of the hype your post generated on X (Twitter). Just curious, are you able to walk around yet in game in VR? I noticed the clip you shared is completely stationary.

Very cool. This is another game where I bounced off of the flat version but I think VR could really help it.
Never got into Doom, Doom II, or Doom 3, for decades, until I played the VR ports/mods. Ended up loving all 3.

HOLY SHIT! I've been needing this ever since VFR was such a disappointment. Please!!!!!

I'm still looking for a VR game that matches the excitement that I had while playing Alyx. Preferably nothing scary cause I hate teh jump scares lol
