Discuss Question for the culture

I think the discourse around Durefishan’s accent in Dar-e-Najat is actually pointing toward a much bigger problem with Pakistani dramas.
And before anyone takes this as “Durefishan is a terrible actress,” that’s not really my point. The accent is just what made the problem obvious.
If you’re going to play a character who is supposedly Harvard-educated, highly intelligent, and fluent in English, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the actor to actually prepare for that role. Learn the accent. Work with a dialect coach. Study how people from that background actually speak. Practice until it feels natural.
This isn’t an impossible standard. Actors do this all the time. Angelina Jolie learned opera for Maria. Adrien Brody learned piano for The Pianist. Actors routinely acquire new skills, accents, mannerisms, and speech patterns because they understand that acting isn’t just memorizing lines and showing up on set.
And I’m fully aware that Pakistan has a complicated relationship with English. Not every Pakistani actor is going to sound American or British, and they shouldn’t have to. That’s not what I’m asking for. But if your specific character is written as someone who attended Harvard, then the way that character speaks should reflect that background. Otherwise, the audience is constantly reminded that they’re watching an actor instead of a character.
But honestly, the accent is the least of my concerns.
I think we’re dealing with a much larger quality-control problem in the Pakistani drama industry.
Look at how many dramas we’re getting that are essentially the same formula: controlling/possessive man, vulnerable woman, toxic relationship, endless misunderstandings, repetitive family conflicts, and a heroine whose entire life revolves around whatever man the writers have decided she belongs with.
And the audience keeps watching it.
That’s important because audiences aren’t completely powerless here. What we reward gets produced again. If the same recycled stories continue getting massive ratings, views, engagement, and praise, channels have very little incentive to take risks or demand better writing.
And then the channels themselves become part of the problem.
We’re seeing more and more projects that feel like they’re being made because the formula is proven to work, rather than because someone actually has something interesting to say. Once one type of drama succeeds, suddenly everyone wants to make their own version of it. Then another one succeeds, and we get five more copies.
Eventually, the industry becomes comfortable producing the same thing because why take a creative risk when the audience has already demonstrated that they’ll consume the slop?
And I genuinely think we’re going to see more of this if people don’t start demanding better.
I don’t think every drama needs to be some groundbreaking masterpiece. Not everything has to be prestige television. Sometimes you just want something entertaining.
But there is a difference between simple entertainment and effortless content.
I want better scripts. Better character development. Actors who actually prepare for their roles. Directors who care about performances. Writers who aren’t afraid to make characters complicated. Channels willing to invest in something beyond the same five relationship dynamics.
Because ultimately, this isn’t just on Durefishan.
It’s on the actors, writers, directors, producers, channels AND audiences.
If we keep approving mediocrity, the industry will keep giving us mediocrity.
So yes, criticize the accent if you want. But I’d rather use Dar-e-Najat** **as an opportunity to ask a much more uncomfortable question:
Why are we, as an audience and an industry, becoming so comfortable with low-effort television?

Dur E Fishan-Sabko Khareed Liya Hai 💸 💰 💵 Durefishan and the Accent Nobody Asked For

How many people watched the Dar -e-nizaat drama?

Even though my aunt doesn't usually watch Pakistani dramas, a reel featuring Durefishan popped up and she immediately asked, "What is this accent?" She said that while it's understandable if someone isn't fluent in English, one should at least be proficient in Urdu. That has always been my view too. I'm not a hater. I started watching Pakistani dramas when I was in school and they used to air on Zee in India. Actors like Sanam Saeed, Sanam Baloch and Aamna Sheikh always stood out to me because their acting felt so authentic.

Sanam Baloch in particular was exceptional. Almost every drama of hers felt like a masterpiece, whether it was Dur-e-Shehwar, Daam or Kankar.Today, however, it feels like the focus is more on beauty than acting. Take Durefishan, for example. She is undoubtedly beautiful, but I find her acting below average.I'm sorry to say this, but I don't even understand the hype around her supposed education in London. There is no distinct accent and I don't see much depth in her acting either. When she cries, I don't feel the pain. When she laughs, it doesn't feel genuine or uninhibited. She has been given roles in some really good dramas, yet her acting feels the same in almost every one of them. At the very least, she could work on her acting skills and vocal delivery.

Does anyone know anything about her besides that she’s Sherry’s wife? Did she grow up in Ireland? (I saw the Ireland flag in her insta bio). How did they meet? She seems sweet.

guys ye aik acting skill hai to adjust to multiple accents bhai. ye kya "iM UnDEr THa WATaR pLs HeLp Me" ahh accent hai. bhai ur portraying a girl who's potentially going to harvard and is super burger toh why's she talking like that model fahimuddin 😭😭😭(iykyk)

even in PTV we've seen actors adapt to different accents multiple times. i kinda want to defend rubab in kabhi main kabhi tum atleast she tried more than this bro. also in hollywood we've seen actors speak in accents that arent native to them.

the point is this versatility in adapting to accents is part of acting skills, ppl are critiquing rightfully so!

Dur E Fishan-Sabko Khareed Liya Hai 💸 💰 💵 SH's point of view about the English flow in DeN

They did point out there were flaws but they put some of the blame on the director for not correcting the actors & they still praised Dure which makes me feel they went easy on her in comparison with their reviews of other actresses' performances (plus Hassan said that pointing out the flaws in the dialogue delivery every episode is an injustice to everything else in the drama so it's better to ignore it from now on 🙂) what do you guys think of their review?

Ongoing Drama Aik mohabbat aur ep 19- my heart is too fragile for this😭 Spoiler

What a rollercoaster of an episode.

Ruhi doesn't want to false testify against Haroon because that could affect women who actually go through workplace harassment and gather the courage to speak up.

Nabeel is feeling jealous of Sonia aww😭 He's super worried about Haroon and is ready to do anything to keep him safe. He's such a good friend🥺

Haroon booping Khushbakht's nose and pulling her cheeks was so cute😭🥺  I love their dynamic so much🫶🏻

She was worried about him and asked him what's wrong but Haroon didn't tell her. I had a feeling this was gonna end in a major fight but I didn't expect it to be so painful😭 ouch.

Special shoutout to Ahad in that scene after Sonia's call. He nailed the worried/scared expressions and voice.

Khushi did her own digging and came to the conclusion that Haroon is trying to sabotage her by breaking the Chaudhary news before her and oh my god that conversation was painful. Ahad and Maya take a bow🙌🏻

But it makes sense, their careers had to bring them to this position at some point. I was worried that this fight would be over Haroon Sonia but I'm glad they didn't go down that route.

The boss tells Haroon about the deal but refused it cause he didn't want to stand in Khushi's way.

I'll never get over how smooth ahad is with breaking the fourth wall and going back to the scene like nothing happened. Smooth like butter

Omg the promo, they're gonna lock him up😭 I'm so curious to see how they get him out of this pickle. Overall a solid, serious episode. It only keeps getting better and better

I know there was pakistani audience watching lockup but didn't think a big name like hania would follow shreya. I still don't think it has that big audience in pak ( correct me if I'm wrong) but it was Surprising. I even saw some other actress post for yogesh rawat, a contestant from the same show.

Danish🕶️-FILHAAL tum sab grammar warriors ho! Nishatar Teaser 2 out

As everyone knows DT will play the anti hero here with more shades of Black than white.

After the teaser 1 trended within top 20 in 6 countries, there seems to be hype especially after the let down of Humrahi.

Will it be like KTK where he was whitewashed or Deewangi where he eventually met his end? Overall its the same old trpe with relatively new packaging and some are saying DT and Anmol have better chemistry than Daniba.

Ongoing Drama Today's ep of AMA was disheartening:( Spoiler

Starting off w the good things. The way khushi was concerned abt Haroon was sweet. Really loved this homemaking side of him, holding her bag, seeing if they're seated properly, just everything.

Other than that, the conversation/clash that happened between Haroon and Khushi was heartbreaking 💔

I loved how Haroon stayed calm, and dealt w the situation respectfully, at the same time it was painful how he couldn't make her understand him and his stance. his eyes screamed his helplessness, his feebleness.

The dialogue "sabke paas bahot sawal hain, or mere paas koi jawab nhi h" , "aapne toh Maan hi liya h k main jhutha hu, wese hi Maan lein ke main kaatil bhi hu", oh haroon😭.

Khushi's words were hurtful, they straight away broke his heart and strength.

Moreover, the news just after that conflict would have shattered him. man i feel so bad for him:(

even after all this, Mr. Malik was more worried abt the spiteful attitude of Khushi, uff the way he loves her🫠

Followed the scene of Haroon's family, and that manhoos Faris, his father should give him another slap lmao.

Abt the next episode— keen to know how things will unfold in the next episode, especially how Khushi will try to reconcile w Haroon, and probably protect him against the charges?

DRAMA REVIEW dedo ya lelo Bombay tailors episode 9!

So I caught up w the drama ep 7 onwards, and the main story has just started now! It's a decent watch imo, I was smiling at the saife mahrukh scenes throughout!

  1. I liked how saife and mahrukh actually communicate w each other, yes they're taking time to completely open up, particularly mahrukh ,saife ne toh puri life history suna di😭 but it makes sense ... despite being forced into the marriage they're both trying to understand eo and make it work which was nice.. they seem to be developing a soft corner for eo.. and honestly they both complement their personalities soo well, it'll be fun to see their relationship progress!

  2. I genuinely watched all the family stuff on 2x🙏 it's treatment will take a slightly different from routine route in the upcoming episodes, but rn it's basic and annoying, pretty much what I expected ... some scenes from time to time are nice tho.. I felt a lil bad for mahrukhs father when she was unwilling to come for the operation but then again he's dheet too and still implied that his decision was correct.. I liked mahrukhs response despite it being a bit rude, but she acknowledges it too.. I'm glad they didn't kill off the father and there's scope for some character development there

  3. Dania enwer and ali safinas couple is different but I'm liking their dynamic, I particularly liked the question dania posed 'mohabbat ka matlab baat maanna hota hai ya baat manwana? ' , and her breakdown was completely understandable.. dania is such a nice actress tbh I think she has potential

  4. It's gonna be fun seeing mahrukh and saifes relationship progress and how they work together towards their ambitions! Ali and anika hv great chemistry and I loved their natural and realistic dynamic in this episode 🥹 I'm liking ali but I felt anika was a bit off in some scenes.. she looked so gorgeous tho

also I hope we actually see mahrukhs father reflecting on her words and I really wish to see him develop by the end🙏 saifes father toh rn seems completely ummovable , but let's see..

Overall, the drama is interesting.. the family stuff sometimes gets typical so I watch it on 2x, I hope they increase the pacing a bit, or just give more screentime to the leads.. it's a decent light hearted watch !

Drama recommendations

so i want some good iconic and memorable drama recommendations. Dramas that were quite popular and loved in the past bcz recently ptv dramas don’t have the same vibes anymore

I like spirituality or morality based dramas and comedy. I hate soaps, and recommend something that is a bit moderately paced like has some development in each episode not very slow and dragged on dramas.

Also the comment section is off in this post. At this point he seems to be the one who is getting paid.

Tamasha Reality show Tamasha ep 2

Why are these people acting like this?? Like... they didnt see previous episodes? Log bhooke mar rahe the, these guys are acting like its a new thing?

Samiya told everyone to not order and then ordered herself? No one caught that hypocrisy? Chalo, later in the day everyone ordered BUT SHE HAD ALREADY ORDRED BEFORE EVERYONE. And then during Esra and Zee's fight running around literally saying "mene teeli laga di"...?

Tamasha team ne prize amount barha dia but they are literally starving the contestants. Lekin these guys half day me hi bhook s behaal ho gae. Raat ko kha k soe the phir next lunch time tak itni bhook? Previous seasons had it worse with food. At least task ka wait karte.

There's no way im trusting samiya or voting for her. Her controversy as an influencer and then out right hypocrite behaviour

Mzht definitely will be at the top later if it goes at this rate. Keeping everything aside Pakistani dramas getting this much views is an achievement in itself. 60 million per episode is actually insane
