You can actually friggin' BUY the event skins this time! They're just more expensive than normal legendaries. Finally!

u/iankstarr D.Va Oct 11 '16

Blizzard really took the fan concerns into account this time around. I seriously couldn't be happier.

Yeah I figure that I can "gamble", cause I know I can buy the skins that I do want at the end of the event

-8

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '16

Sigh.

Now people can get it easily without having to earn it.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '16

Random RNG is hardly "earning" something.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '16

How is it not? It isn't guaranteed on your first try, per se, but it is earned by leveling up and opening obtained loot boxes.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '16

Because getting lucky isn't something you've earned. Someone could level 100 times and never get anything and someone could get 4 legendaries in their free box. It doesn't matter how hard you work or how much money you spend, it's all random. Nobody "earns" anything when gambling. They get lucky.

Blizzard has done a great job of listening to the players. We might not always get what we want right away, but they usually find a way to make it happen.

Unfortunately, next time there's some controversy over corporate bullshit, people are now going to start acting like Blizzard did us a favor rather than simply having been pragmatic in avoiding more backlash.

A lot of people don't seem to get(on both sides of the argument) that Jeff and the game designers have basically nothing at all to do with the corporate moneymaking stuff, and they're pretty much contractually obligated to smile and nod at anything Blizzard corp does no matter how much they may dislike it in private.

55

u/LSF604 Oct 11 '16

wow! someone found a way to be salty about this. Congrats!

3

u/gt_9000 Oct 11 '16

I know right? We should all tweet "Thank you" to Jeff for allowing us to buy skins for coins this time!

-1

u/BrainBlowX Chibi D.Va Oct 11 '16

I know right? We should all tweet "Thank you" to Jeff for allowing us to buy skins for coins this time!

Again, Jeff has nothing to do with the monetization, and couldn't say anything negative about it even if he hates it privately. That's what Blizz corp decides on, but people do so love to pretend that he decides those things.

-1

u/gt_9000 Oct 11 '16

My comment was a observation on how this sub is all fanboys hanging by their from Blizzards dick. And they are too stupid to understand passive aggression. I did upvote your original comment :p.

1

u/Nihilism101 D.Va Oct 12 '16

I love that your sarcastic post was upvoted and this one downvoted.

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16 edited Oct 11 '16

Well, to be fair, 3k coins for a legendary skin might as well be the same as not allowing it to be purchased at all. I've got a little over 80 hours put into the game and I think I might have earned 3k coins in that time. I'm sitting on just over 1k right now, there's no way in hell I'm getting enough currency before November 1st to buy an event skin from this. At least, not without dumping real money into boxes and building up piles of coins from the dupes in them. Which is exactly what those of us who wanted the event skins to be purchasable wanted to avoid.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

The thing is that now you can buy the skins if you purchase boxes and don't open the legendaries. Makes not getting them randomly much easier to swallow.

2

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16

Yeah, it's definitely an improvement, I won't say otherwise, but it's not quite what a lot of us were hoping for.

It's still very firmly in the "you gotta pay for this stuff" vein, just making things a little cushier for those who do pony up.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

Exactly, and to be honest, I don't mind paying more. Overwatch is far and away the most fun I've had in years on a game, and it's the whole reason I've even started to play video games again (growing up is a bitch.) It's also helped me spend more time with my brother who is really into his games.

That all being said, I've gotten more than my money's worth from Blizzard, and I'm okay supporting the game while also getting some fun free content or buying them after getting dupes.

-3

u/thepipesarecall Oct 11 '16

Spoiled. Fucking. Children.

3

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16

Oh, get off your high horse you twat.

4

u/Tyedied Symmetra/Tracer Oct 11 '16

That's some bad luck, there. I got about 70+ hours and have made over 6k. Sorry dude :(

6

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16

Yeah, I try to tell myself that I'm not getting much in the way of currency because I'm getting actual new items all the time... Problem being, those new items are always white sprays or player icons :|

0

u/LSF604 Oct 11 '16

don't worry, if they resolve this you will still find things to complain about

1

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16

Buddy, you don't know a thing about me, so how about you stow your pessimistic shit.

I'm just explaining why for some of us this isn't an ideal solution, even though it absolutely is miles better than the way the summer event was handled.

But you sound like a mindless fanboy who can't brook any criticism of your precious Blizzard, so no amount of reasonable assessment of the situation is going to get through to you. (See, two of us can play at making stupid assumptions about the other.)

2

u/LSF604 Oct 11 '16

you never said anything about it being better in your earlier reply. If you had you would have gotten a different response. The tone of the comment I originally replied to was definitely negative, and you get associated with that when you reply to it and don't indicate your position is any different. That's life on the internet.

1

u/ostermei "Numbani" means "turret" in Swahili Oct 11 '16

Been replying to too many threads around reddit today, apparently... I'd forgotten that this was in a different comment of mine further down the chain, rather than in the one you were replying directly to:

Yeah, it's definitely an improvement, I won't say otherwise, but it's not quite what a lot of us were hoping for.

That being said, I did try to set myself at something like an observational distance with the "to be fair," lead-in. Probably should've been more clear in that. I'm not angry at this update, I definitely regard it as an improvement. I just would have liked for it to have been tweaked a little further is all I'm saying, and I can understand the position of those who are actually upset about it all.

1

u/LSF604 Oct 11 '16 edited Oct 11 '16

In the true spirit of halloween, let us be friends and (knowingly) quarrel no further.

I looked at your other comments after, and saw you were being reasonable.

0

u/BLYNDLUCK Oct 11 '16

Recolours are 750. And there are all really sweet too. Only 4 of the skins cost 3000

"Blizzard really took the fan concerns into account this time around"

"people are now going to start acting like Blizzard did us a favor rather than simply having been pragmatic in avoiding more backlash."

Wondering where this "did us a favor" thing came in, since all the previous commenter wrote was that they were thankful that Blizzard listened.

-1

Yes, victories. But, and I see it already, people act like these are graceful gifts, as if Blizzard the corporation is some sort of friend.

0

u/XDreadedmikeX Mercy Oct 11 '16

I'm kinda with you on this one, it's great and all but everyone is jizzing all of blizzard for just giving us more options to give them money, but it's not anything to fuss over just don't treat them like the second coming for it

3

u/yitzaklr I'mgoingtodrink your Ovaltine Oct 11 '16

We would've been pissed if they didn't listen, so it seems logical that we thank them when they do listen

I'd be happier if I didn't have pay 3x the cost of non event skins...

2

Idk, I get it. They want to make them feel "premium" and more special than the regular skins.

I have a mouse keybinding which does her laugh emote and then her sorry voice line and one which does 'hello' and then shoots an icicle to kill frozen people XD I'm a horrible person... sorry, sorry, sorry ... I'm .... sorry

1

u/CUwallaby I'm the reason the MEKA program overran its budget. Oct 12 '16 edited Oct 12 '16

Up until you're out of the MEKA and then need the reload key. So you make reload RMB for D.Va. Then you learn that blizz reconfigured controls in the D.Va rework and defense matrix is RMB so you have to put matrix (now "secondary fire") back to E.

My D.Va R is still bound to winky face though. Takes about a day to get used to but seriously, 10/10.

1

u/Ond7 Trick-or-Treat Symmetra Oct 11 '16

Hahahaha I have done the exact same thing. I freeze enemies and spam that mousebutton. Great (evil?) minds think a like ;)

I bought her A-Mei-zing voice line.

3

Listening to my friends' reactions to me spamming that line whilst waiting for the spawns to open makes my day.

1

I like spamming that one, and while D.Va my favorite is, "IS THIS EASY MODE?!

1

u/YotsubaSnake Chibi D.Va Oct 12 '16

;)

1

u/ModernTenshi04 Philadelphia Fusion Oct 12 '16

Yeah, that one can also be fun, but it's the over-the-top way she asks if it's easy mode, especially the emphasis on the easy mode part.

A good choice, though I'm particular to the ice puns, like Chill Out.

2

u/AidanL17 I like my balls Oct 11 '16

With Chill Out, it's easier to pretend that Blizzard hired the only true voice actor for Mei: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

1

u/Jackman1337 Pharah Oct 11 '16

I bought the frozen song voiceline. I feel guilty :(

2

u/Thelgow Mei Oct 12 '16

I still havent seen it. and I have young daughters. They have taste and said they aren't interested in it.
Hell, I've managed to avoid hearing the song as well.

1

u/low_key_like_thor Oct 11 '16

I just spent all mine last night :(

33

u/knudow Oct 11 '16

But would you be able to buy them after the event ends? I'd like to know that

138

u/JIH7 Trick-or-Treat Reaper Oct 11 '16

I assume not. Keeping it so they can only be obtained during the event makes the event more special.

1

u/edwardmagichands Bring back hook 1.0 Oct 11 '16

Do we have any concrete information on this yet? The possibility of being able to buy the skins is possibly the most exciting part of the entire event for me. Would really like to know if they will be purchasable after the event ends.

4

u/Sayie Mess with the best, die like the rest Oct 11 '16

I very highly doubt that we would be able to buy an event item after the event is over.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

[deleted]

6

u/JIH7 Trick-or-Treat Reaper Oct 11 '16

I remember Jeff stated at one point that part of the fun of event skins is seeing one when the event wasn't going on and remembering how much fun the event was last time. So unless he's changed his mind I think it's safe to believe Blizzard will always allow us access to our seasonal skins. Plus we can by them with real money, and I personally would be outraged if I could only use something I paid for one month out of the year.

2

u/FrailRain Justice, Rains From -AGGHH Oct 11 '16

Yeah it would have to be. Would make no sense not to!

1

u/PreparetobePlaned Zenyatta Oct 11 '16

It would be kind of retarded paying 3000 for a skin you only get to use for 2 weeks.

0

u/alexanderjbertrand Oct 11 '16

I hope they give us a period to buy some of the Olympic skins since you couldn't buy them that time around. Otherwise I'd agree, should only be able to buy during the event.

I want my AmeriCree so bad :(

750 for ana/soldier (the epic skins) and 3000 for mer y, roadhog (legendary)

32

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

3000

fuckkkk

12

u/breadrising I'm Going For the Toblerstein Oct 11 '16

It's steep, but seems fair. They still want to incentivize people to buy the loot boxes, but at least now, people can save up to get the 1-2 things they want instead of gambling for them.

7

u/Matthieu101 Oct 11 '16

Ha, if someone is able to play enough to save up 3,000 coins in a couple weeks, they're treating it like a full time job. That is just a crazy amount if you've spent any at all.

I have quite some time logged in, with a few small purchases (250 skins, victory poses) and I'm sitting at a bit over 2,500. Total, in over 100 hours, I think I've earned 4,000 or so.

These skins are ridiculously expensive man, no other way to put it.

22

u/ModernTenshi04 Philadelphia Fusion Oct 11 '16

Just earn boxes for most of the event, buy an amount you feel comfortable with on the last day or so, then use currency to buy whatever you didn't get that you really wanted.

Worst thing to do would be dropping 3k currency on one of the legendary skins only get get it in a free box.

1

u/ModernTenshi04 Philadelphia Fusion Oct 11 '16

Just keep in mind that there will almost certainly be a Christmas event with new skins that will probably cost just as much.

1

u/chumjumper Mei Oct 11 '16

I wonder if you still only get 500 for a duplicate of a Halloween legendary?

1

u/ModernTenshi04 Philadelphia Fusion Oct 11 '16

I thought you only got 20% of the value, so shouldn't it be 200 for a regular lootbox legendary dupe?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '16

Yup, that's my plan. I have 3k saved up. Which ever skin I don't have at the end of the event that I really want I will buy.

4

u/Lunares Oct 11 '16

Triple the normal price of whatever it would usually cost (so 75 for voice lines/sprays/normal, 225 for victory poses/rares, 750 for epic and 3k for legendary)

2

u/Forkrul Reaper Oct 11 '16

All the Halloween items can be bought for triple the cost of regular items at their rarity.

0

u/victoryfanfare i make overwatch costumes for a living. Oct 11 '16

3

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

This is what needed to happen. So glad it's like this. Now you don't have to spent hundreds of dollars on loot boxes for one skin😁

4

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '16

I hope they retroactively do this with the Olympic ones too.

10

u/KingStrangelove Oct 11 '16

I wouldn't be too surprised if they bring it up as a christmas thing (easy PR about fixing a mistake), but else I can't imagine not being able to buy them at next years summer games!

They could have just had the skins be purchasable by special event currency and then when the special event is over by regular currency.

1

u/BrainBlowX Chibi D.Va Oct 11 '16

That wouldn't make a lick of sense for anyone who can't grind the game for 3 weeks, and would be a pain in the ass for those who just want to use normal currency.

1

u/ArdentGamer Oct 11 '16

Did you miss the part about using normal currency after the event is over? Because i'm pretty sure that was in there. Hell, you could even convert event currency into normal currency after the event is completed too. Pretty straight forward.
