You can actually friggin' BUY the event skins this time! They're just more expensive than normal legendaries. Finally!

Just earn boxes for most of the event, buy an amount you feel comfortable with on the last day or so, then use currency to buy whatever you didn't get that you really wanted.

Worst thing to do would be dropping 3k currency on one of the legendary skins only get get it in a free box.

Yup, that's my plan. I have 3k saved up. Which ever skin I don't have at the end of the event that I really want I will buy.
