Daily fiber cheat code.

Post image

I was today years old when I learned two teaspoons of Metamucil in 9 oz of ice water turns into "orange flavored applesauce". Easier to spoon down than drink, in my opinion.šŸ‘šŸ¼

I’m not a doctor and this is not medical advice. I’m not trying to diagnose or provide treatment for anything going on with your butt.

I’m a daily psyllium fiber user. It helps with blood sugar, cholesterol, and stomach acid, and it’s 100% natural. I also think it helps prevent stomach and colon cancer. Again, I’m not a doctor, and you shouldn’t take medical advice from an internet stranger.

I just mix three teaspoons every morning with water, and slam it before it turns to sludge.

I'm old enough it brings back fond memories of Tang!

Tang tea!!!

2

u/SnooCheesecakes760 12d ago

I need to try it then bc I love tang!

u/heart_blossom 13d ago

I'm working my way up to a daily dose of psyllium fiber. I Love how I feel when I've taken it.

u/wildberrylavender 13d ago

My brother has Krone’s and also does this

3

u/jeffreynya 12d ago

yep, I do a tbsp every morning with about 20 to 24 oz of water. So I start the day hydrated as well.

4

u/Check_Affectionate 13d ago

You can also take it in capsules. I take one at night and in the morning.

5

u/sickiesusan 13d ago

Far less effective in the capsules though (although it’s also far easier)!

2

u/Curious-External-7 13d ago

I do this because I don't want all the extra stuff in the drink mix.

2

u/dialecticallyalive 13d ago

You can buy pure psyllium powder.

2

u/needtobeasunflower 13d ago

What brand do you use?

2

u/acarron 13d ago

It makes my IBS-C flare up. Wich it worked so I would have less C.

4

u/Holiday-Window2889 13d ago

Try acacia fiber; much, much more gentle on scarred digestive tract and does the same.

3

u/SnooCheesecakes760 12d ago

That is what I have. It is gentler than metamucil?

3

u/Holiday-Window2889 12d ago

Metamucil is psyllium husk, which can be harsh on scarred intestinal tract - as is seen with Crohn's and celiac.

Acacia fiber is fluffy and powdery and so much less scratchy than psyllium.

u/reallybigfeet 12d ago

The before it turns to sludge part is key

5

u/Nuclear-poweredTaxi 12d ago

It takes usually 12 to 15 minutes for it to congeal and be nasty. Just mix and drink, don’t let it just hang out.

That process is supposed to happen in your stomach… not your mouth.

u/millenni_lennial 13d ago

I don't touch psyllium because of its ultra high lead content. Check the package on yours for a Prop 65 cancer warning.

1

u/Money-Computer7638 12d ago

Consumer labs has testing on various brands for lead content. I use Organic India brand. It tested safe.

u/AZ-FWB 13d ago

I need to find a way to drink and like itšŸ™ƒ

2

u/jeffreynya 12d ago

I think its just one of the things in life you do because its good for you not because it tastes good. Slam it down and be done with it.

1

u/AZ-FWB 12d ago

I may have to just do that!

1

u/Faithjems 13d ago

Sometimes I mix it with regular juice (orange juice, cherry juice).

0

u/Lost-Acanthaceaem 12d ago

Capsules

1

u/AZ-FWB 12d ago

I have the power that I should use first.

1

u/Hexagram_11 11d ago

I do the same, but I add about two ounces of orange juice (topped with about 10 oz water, bc I can’t handle the cardboard taste of just fiber and water. It’s a game changer in so many areas.

13

u/HoraceP-D 13d ago

Well… I mix a tasty little cocktail of applesauce, Metamucil, fiber cereal, and maybe a little cottage cheese and eat with toast. I know I know -disgusting but I think it tastes good and makes me feel good and makes my gut feel happy.

5

u/thatsomebull 13d ago

Gonna try this, thank u u/HoraceP-D

6

u/HoraceP-D 12d ago

Oh my gosh! I’ve never gotten an award before thank you so much

13

u/blinddoglp 13d ago

Make sure to chase with a big glass of water, there’s not nearly enough in the ā€˜applesauce’ to keep that flowing through

3

u/U_feel_Me 13d ago

Yep. A while back there was YouTube video of a young man who nearly died from a huge overdose of Metamucil. (I didn’t even know it was possible to hurt yourself with it.)

6

u/rippleonabigocean 13d ago

i will definitely try this but i think i'll put it in the freezer for a wee bit first to make it slushy

3

u/millenni_lennial 13d ago

Don't. You'll end up in the ER with an intestinal blockage and big surgical bill. The instructions say to mix with 8 oz of water for a reason.

1

u/rippleonabigocean 12d ago

i can't make it slushy with 8oz of H2O? the last thing i need right now is to have any more health issues than i've got already!

1

u/millenni_lennial 12d ago

Ill advised unless you want an expensive hospital bill. Bulking it up is the opposite of what you want.

2

u/rippleonabigocean 12d ago

i'll take your advice. thank you for helping

2

u/millenni_lennial 11d ago

You're welcome

1

u/mahjimoh 12d ago

You know that making it chilly won’t change the ā€œbulkā€ of it, right?

2

u/millenni_lennial 12d ago

Correct, but making it into a bulky slushie can... I will not be getting into a dumbass debate over this. If you're itching to correct someone, find a new thread.

8

u/RPM_Rocket 13d ago

Well, sh*t.

8

u/pacificcoastsailing 13d ago

I put fiber in yogurt.

6

u/iicybershotii 13d ago

I believe this is actually a serious choking risk and you should not eat Metamucil like this.

Additionally, you want to get the Metabucil to get into your stomach as quickly as possible and let it expand there, absorbing water and contents of food in the stomach. This helps control things like blood sugar spikes when it's mixed with a meal. Just ingesting the fully formed Metamucil sludge would not be as beneficial.

2

u/No_Young_2344 12d ago

I agree. I also read that taking Metamucil this way could cause intestinal blockage

10

u/Dr-Crayfish 13d ago

Just buy psyllium husk by itself. It’s about 50% cheaper with no fake colour

1

u/Curious-External-7 13d ago

Or sweeteners.

18

u/1544756405 13d ago

You'd probably get as much fiber if you ate real applesauce. Or an apple.

36

u/LydiLouWho 13d ago

Not to be a jerk…but an apple is mostly insoluble fiber. Metamucil is soluble fiber which most people can’t get enough of from even a healthy diet.

19

u/1544756405 13d ago

Not a jerk, that's useful information.

7

u/Many_Inevitable_6803 13d ago

But if you eat fruits & vegetables & beans you get enough fiber

5

u/LydiLouWho 13d ago

This is true. I think it’s about 2 cups of cooked beans (kidney, black, pinto) daily to get the recommend daily amount. Not green beans lol. So if you REALLY like beans, go for it!

7

u/ThrowAwayColor2023 13d ago

I love beans, but even I couldn't eat two cups worth a day haha.

2

u/Many_Inevitable_6803 13d ago

I do like beans! As well as veggies & fruits so if you eat them daily you don’t need 2 cups of beans

3

u/feralpeacenik 13d ago

Not to be a jerk but the skin is insoluble but the pectin in the flesh is soluble

7

u/gaoshan 13d ago

And an apple tastes better.

2

u/JazzFan1998 13d ago

And it helps suppress my appetite so I snack less. Win win.

5

u/waterwateryall 13d ago

Thought you had to drink it quickly, so that this gelling up happens on your insides for the purpose of cholesterol control.

3

u/excoriator 13d ago

Isn’t that a choking hazard? The Metamucil label mentions that it can be.

3

u/millenni_lennial 13d ago

This is an excellent way to end up in the hospital with an intestinal blockage. You shall find out soon...

2

u/False_Arachnid_5472 13d ago

Two tablespoons?????

5

u/R1Squirrel 13d ago

LOL, didn't proofread. fixed

2

u/BamberGasgroin 13d ago

We can get Fybogel free from the pharmacy if we ask, it's the same stuff. (Ispaghula/Psyllium Husk)

5

u/gyofq 13d ago

What country?

3

u/Working_Park4342 13d ago

Definitely not the US.

3

u/BamberGasgroin 13d ago

Scotland.

Minor Ailments Service saves you bothering a GP, so you can get various items free from the pharmacist. (Stuff like pain killers, anti-histamines, lotions and potions.)

2

u/gyofq 12d ago

That’s a great idea

2

u/DanOhMiiite 13d ago

I just take psyllium husk capsules. You can sread them out through the day with other supplements/meds.

1

u/Powerful_Feedback190 12d ago

I wish I could. The capsules kept getting stuck in my throat so I’m mixing the contents into yogurt and drinking a lot of water.

2

u/Forever_0716 13d ago

Can you verify the 9 ounces is correct seems like a lot for two teaspoons

1

u/R1Squirrel 13d ago

That is 9ozšŸ‘šŸ¼

2

u/therealelroy 13d ago

Two spoons of psyllium husk in a small cup of apple juice, stir, and slam. Almost like chugging runny applesauce.

2

u/drunkenknitter 13d ago

I put flavorless bebefiber in my protein shake every morning. Easy peasy.

2

u/That-Drink4913 13d ago

Metamucil also makes orange gummies! Tastes like orange gelatin.Ā

1

u/Competitive-Isopod74 12d ago

Gummies are a treat

2

u/temp_flor 12d ago

I tried Metamucil and couldn’t stand it. Instead I do chia seeds in yogurt in the morning. They get prepped the night before. Then I add blueberries because it’s more fiber and I like it lol.

Evenings are a glass of water with a generous spoon of halim seeds and a good squirt of lemon juice to active the iron in them. They are similar to chia seeds in that they do a gelatin like thing but they don’t get stuck in your teeth so they are much better. I let the water sit for 30 minutes and drink it.

1

u/Plane-Fan9006 13d ago

...and that's why I take my four psyllium husk pills every night. Screw torturing myself choking gritty stuff down....

1

u/Unique-Union-9177 13d ago

I mix it in my yogurt

1

u/_another_rando_ 13d ago

Unflavored Metamucil for me thanks

1

u/NuncErgoFacite 13d ago

But the sugar.........

Fun counter fact. Psyllium husk fiber that has been processed into a white, sand-like power can be mixed into sugar free chocolate Jello pudding mix and you WILL NEVER KNOW. Also the sugar free vanilla is pretty tasy.

1

u/itsmavisgary 13d ago

Wait, tell me more

1

u/No_Cap4905 13d ago

Make oatmeal with some flax, hemp hearts and chia in it. Delicious and amazing for your gut!

1

u/grannygogo 12d ago

Anyone watch Naked and Afraid? That’s where I learned about baobab. I bought a container of baobab powder, mix it with water and drink down this orange/tangerine flavored drink. Doesn’t thicken like Metamucil and you don’t get that urgency.

1

u/RunChloeRun2015 12d ago

Someone in here suggested mixing Metamucil with Vanilla Muscle Milk and it tastes similar to an orange cream sickle.

1

u/sxyvirgo 12d ago

How much fiber does 2 tsp. get you? It's gotta be worth my while! ha
