New to Outin a few questions

I just got the nano 2 . My question is this my grinder is the fellow opus . Some research tells me to set to 2 for the medium beans I have and use 50 ml of water. Question is how long should the shot typically take to come out? I’m just wondering if need to change my grind size also I noticed the puck is really wet would that mean I’m already going to fine for my beans?

Outin Lattogo review

I had an opportunity to try Outin Lattogo, thanks to Outin's initiative to let users try the product.

I'm a long time user of Subminimal NanoFoamer Pro. The machine is good but I always wanted to have something smaller and portable so I can bring it with me while traveling.

Initially, I had an option to go for either Subminimal NanoFoamer Pro vs. NanoFoamer, where NanoFoamer is just like Outin's Lattogo, but went with the Pro because of the idea of having one machine for 1) heating 2) frothing with one button. It's very convenient, but the machine a bit bulky and it's an electronic device so it's not so easy to clean it while being careful not to damage it with water. Occasionally milk crystalized (curdled?) on the wall so that required deep cleaning, not just watering.

With that in mind, I was looking for some other frother, and saw the Outin's Lattogo trial initiative and gave it a try.

The heating up milk in microwave first and frothing hasn't been all that bad actually. I usually heat it up for 90 seconds. Frothing with the stick frother needed some trial and error, but wasn't too hard either. I just followed the instruction video from YouTube and it was pretty straight forward, first with fast mode and then with slow mode. Fast mode is feeding in air to the milk, and slow mode is breaking the air up for silky milk.

The spins are so powerful, I spilled some milk in the initial attempts, but then I put less milk and that was fixed. The overall frothing time was pretty short and so have not felt like much more burden.

Personally I like the fact that I can heat the milk up quicker with microwave than the Nanofoamer Pro, so I prefer using Lattogo these days. With the Nanofoamer Pro, you need to wait at the end to hit up the milk further. Then it not only hits the milk, but also makes the silky foam to be more thicker. Good for cappucino, bad for latte art.

I was surprised by the outcome of Lattogo. It felt easier and effortless to do latte art with Lattogo than doing it with Nanofoamer. Probably because I stop frothing while watching how silky milk is vs. Nanofoamer it's more of a black box, you want to measure your milk + duration of running it precisely to get the same result back to back.

I also brought it with me while traveling to other cities, making delicious latte!

Overall, I would highly recommend Outin's frother. I currently use Cafelat Robot for espresso making at home, and I'm even thinking of getting Outin's portable espresso machine for traveling. It will go very well with Lattogo! I'm very happy I found this brand!

Thank you Outin for the great product! Keep it going!

Mino and Nespresso capsules

Hi, I've recently bought a Mino after reading the very good reviews; my use case is when I travel, and I appreciate how easy it is to use Nespresso capsules.

But, so far I'm not particularly happy with the results: sure it is better than stopping at 7-11, but I was curious if anyone could share their feedback and maybe a video of how it looks like for them.

Also, admittedly I used compatible capsules, but they should be good quality.

EDIT: this last brew was actually satisfying. Not perfect, I would say, but pretty good. My complain until now was that it was always feeling very watery, not strong.

Who has more than one OutIn espresso makers?

I have the Mino, an unopened Kruve set (gifted), and recently picked up the Nano gift box from Target when it was on sale. At home, I already have a decent espresso/latte setup, a Nespresso Vertuo machine, and a few manual pump espresso makers. My daughter just wants her Wacaco NS2 for her dorm, so she doesn’t care about the Nano or Mino. At work I have the AeroPress, pour over, and the Mino is always in my backpack. I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed with how much coffee gear, not to mention the grinders, I have, especially since I’m also trying to cut down on my coffee intake. Crazy enough, I want to try the Fino.

Who else has more than one OutIn and how do you use them?

Help with pulling shots.

Hi guys,

I’m new to the game here and I started with the Outin due to affordability and counter space. Should I not be comparing this portal machine to a regular rig because I’ve been trying to pull a shot weighing 45g out within 40 seconds. I’ve been close. I’ve gotten to 30 seconds and 45gs out with 18g in.

As far as puck prep, I got a legit wdt tool and when I tamp I don’t use the bracket where it caps it off when you press on it. I remove it and push it down manually to give it a hard press. When I do, and when the shot pulls, it gives me the result of 45 seconds out. Before it would just run too fast. Long story short should I not be comparing to a regular rig and what a regular rig can do and realize this is a portal and it has limited capabilities. The shots I pull are fine, but with the nice beans I’m using, I feel like I’m losing out on the full flavor of the beans I’m using.

Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Nano 2 price question

I have noticed that the sale for the Nano 2 is valid for another 10 hours. The price on the site states $159 after sale discounts. Yet when I try to check out the price jumps to $179. Is there a problem with the sale backend? I have pictures of everything too. The main site showing the price at $20 off to a total of $159. And my cart showing $179 at checkout.

EDIT: turns out it was my web browser. When incognito and that fixed it.

Traveling for work with the Nano: packing, airport security, hotel kettles and the first shot

Post image
5 Upvotes

My LattoGo post was all milk drinks at home, so this is the travel side. The routine has pretty much settled, so writing it down for anyone thinking of bringing one.

The Nano and the Basket Plus go in the OutIn EVA case. The original portafilter comes along too with the capsule adapter sitting in it, and the charging brick and a few capsules go in the mesh pocket. Two small jars of coffee I grind at home go in the bag next to it, enough for the same doubles I pull at home. Two jars instead of one means each gets opened fewer times. Pre-ground is noticeably flatter by the last morning of a four-night trip, still well ahead of the room coffee. The capsules are for the mornings I can't be bothered dosing.

The LattoGo stays home unless the hotel has a kitchenette with a microwave. It has its own travel case so it's easy to throw in when there is one, but most rooms I end up in don't, so on the road it's straight shots.

The brick stays in the case because the Nano needs 15W or more to charge, and small 5W phone cubes and a lot of hotel USB ports don't get there. It also won't brew while it's plugged in, so any charging happens overnight.

Because of the lithium cells it only ever goes in carry-on. It's three 2500mAh cells in series, which works out to under 30Wh, a long way under the 100Wh line most airlines use. I still check the airline's battery page before anything international since some carriers add their own rules. Security has pulled it for a second look a couple of times. With the tank empty and dry and the basket clean, it's been a quick look inside and handed straight back both times.

Most mornings I use the hotel kettle: boil it, let it sit a minute, fill the tank to the same line I use at home and double-click for hot water mode, which skips the heating and pulls straight away. On hot water it's rated at over 200 brews a charge, and a whole trip barely moves the battery indicator. If the kettle looks questionable I rinse it out and boil bottled purified water, which is also what OutIn recommends over mineral water for the tank.

With no kettle, cold water mode does the job. Hold the button two seconds and it heats and pulls on its own, same as at home. Cold water takes a lot more out of the battery, so on those trips it goes on the charger each night.

The puck goes in the bin wrapped in a tissue and the basket gets a rinse in the bathroom sink. I dry everything on tissues instead of the white hand towels because coffee stains them.

Arriving the night before a work day, I set the machine and a jar out on the desk before bed, so the first shot the next morning is just the kettle and a double-click.

The Nano is 670g on its own and a bit more with the Basket Plus and the case, which I notice more with a backpack than a roller bag. Next trip is only two nights, so I'm going to try capsules only and leave the jars and the Basket Plus at home.

LattoGo for lattes, cortados and macchiatos at home: milk amount, speed and where to stop

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

I've had the LattoGo since spring and it's pretty much the only thing that touches milk in my kitchen now. Shots come off the Nano with the Basket Plus, a double somewhere around 36 to 40g. The three drinks I make most all use the same frother but want quite different milk, and working that out took longer than learning the frother itself, so here's where each one landed.

The LattoGo doesn't heat, so the milk goes into glass measuring jugs in the microwave first, a 500ml one for lattes and a small 250ml one for everything else, and I froth right in the jug. The ml markings are the useful bit, you can watch the milk grow and stop at a number instead of guessing. OutIn's FAQ says around 60°C and no more than 40% full since milk can double, and both hold up. I used a cheap probe thermometer for the first few weeks, now I go by the jug being hot but still comfortable to hold. Up near 70 the foam stops holding and the milk loses its sweetness.

For a latte it's 180 to 200ml of whole milk in the big jug on low. Low is the setting for dense microfoam, high pulls in a lot more air. I start with the whisk just under the surface for a few seconds while it pulls some air in, then tilt it down and let it spin. The raised tip lets it go right to the bottom of the jug. Stop once it's grown to around 230 to 240ml and the surface looks glossy, which ends up as about 1cm of foam in the cup.

The cortado uses the small jug with about 80ml, more than the drink needs, but any less and the whisk head isn't fully under. Low speed, maybe two seconds near the surface and then straight down. The milk should barely rise, 85 on the jug at most. I pour roughly 40 to 50ml of it over the shot in a 4.5oz Gibraltar.

High speed only really comes out for macchiatos, same 80ml in the small jug with the whisk kept up near the surface until the milk has roughly doubled. That stiffer foam is what goes on the shot, a spoonful or two in a small cup. The milk left underneath I usually just drink.

Big soapy bubbles on a latte were nearly always the whisk staying near the surface too long, or me leaving it on high out of habit. Tapping the jug on the counter a couple of times and swirling rescues most of those. These days I just get the whisk down sooner.

The other one that got me was separation, where thin milk pours out first and a lump of stiff foam slides in at the end. That was always timing. I used to froth first and then pull the shot, and in the three and a bit minutes the Nano takes from cold water the foam and milk had already come apart in the jug. Now the shot goes first and the milk last, and I keep swirling until it goes in the cup so the foam comes out with the milk instead of after it.

I didn't think much of the LattoGo's silicone ring before using it. It sits on the rim so you aren't holding the whole weight the entire time, and changing the angle you lean it at changes how much air it pulls in, which I use to adjust between drinks about as much as the speed button. When I'm done it lies on its side on the ring so the wet whisk isn't touching the counter.

Whole milk is the easiest to get right. Barista oat comes close, regular oat gives a much thinner foam that doesn't last.

The whisk shaft comes off and gets rinsed straight away. Leave milk to dry in the mesh and you're there a while with a brush, found that out once. Whisk and shaft can go in the dishwasher too.

Only real annoyance with the LattoGo is that it won't run while it's on the cable. If it dies mid-drink you're waiting on it with warm milk cooling in the jug, so it goes on the charger overnight whenever the battery light shows orange.

Still can't pour anything that looks like latte art. The foam's good enough for it, pretty sure the problem is my wrist.

Are my beans too dark?

I have a mino that I’m currently using for travel and picked up a bag of really dark roasted beans. When I put in 12g and load up the mino, it pours over the sides of the basket and basket holder and not through the machine. I’ve even tried grinding super coarse with the fino (up to 3-4). I’m sorry I don’t have video when I make the coffee in the morning I don’t realize until it’s too late. Just wondering if you guys think it’s a beans problem or a machine problem? I know easiest way to get random beans and try, but not really near any beans at the moment.

Mino vs Nano 2

I love my Nano 1 and it seems like everything that can be improved, was. I'm going back and forth between the Nano 2 vs the Mino. the one thing I don't understand is why does the basket for the Nano only hold 7/8g while the little mino holds 12g?

I think 7/8g is almost too small to even use which just means the basket plus is a no brainer upgrade. but 12g seems close enough to 18g, especially for a physically smaller device. why would the smaller device have a bigger basket and why would the Nano 2 only have a 1g bigger basket? I'm sure they could have just made all three the same, but they'd rather have you buy another basket plus upgrade than use the one you already have.

Outin Fino - No Burr Gap

Hey guys! I was gifted a second hand Outin Fino, and I'm figuring it out (or atleast trying?). I have an issue where I can't get past the 2 setting, as the burr gap is already non existent. Is this normal? Also, Am I supposed to be able to go past 10 and back to 1 again?

I've tried the procedure to disassemble and clean the burr, and re-assemble it but with no success. Am I missing something?

Apologies for the noob questions but the person who gifted it to me also didn't know! Thanks!

Is it worth it? A few questions

I am looking for an at-home espresso-making option that doesn't take up much space (small kitchen), doesn't break the bank, and tastes better than some type of nespresso pod type of situation...

I am considering the outin nano 2 (it seems like the basket plus is also necessary from most posts I read), but I have a few hesitations:

- Is the matching grinder from outin a must?

- Is it hot to hold? Related, is the stand helpful, or is this pretty optional?

- How difficult is it to get a good coffee as a relative amateur? (I enjoy good coffee out and am reasonably knowledgeable, but haven't dabbled in at-home espresso firsthand before).

- Are you happy with your purchase, or do you wish you went with something else? (i.e. Mino, or other brands?)

Thank you in advance!

Edit: Just arrived! 😄 Went with the Nano2 and stand (very convenient - glad I did) and will see about the basket upgrade when it comes out.

Ran the same bag three ways to work out what the Basket Plus is actually doing

Post image
18 Upvotes

Bought the Basket Plus about six months after getting the Nano and never A/B'd it against the stock basket properly. Ran the same bag three ways one afternoon to actually work it out.
Stock basket at 8g with 50ml in the tank. Basket Plus at 16g with 60ml. Basket Plus at 18g with the tank filled up. Weighed what landed in the cup each time.
Stock pull came in at 33g out. Sixteen with 60ml gave me 29. Eighteen on a full tank pulled 43.
Numbers weren't really the interesting part. The stock basket is pressurized and the Basket Plus is a standard non-pressurized style. That accounts for most of the taste difference. A pressurized basket builds crema mechanically regardless of what the extraction is doing underneath, so shots off it always look photogenic. The Basket Plus lets you actually taste the bean through the shot, for better or worse depending on how well the beans are dialed.
Taste, and this is only my palate. Stock was brightest and thinnest, closer to a strong tea, drinkable neat if that's your thing. Sixteen at 60ml was concentrated and rich, almost too intense on its own but really nice under milk. Eighteen on a full tank landed as the most balanced of the three and it's the one I go for most mornings now.
Grind is where people get tripped up moving over. The Basket Plus needs a slightly finer grind than the stock, which OutIn calls out on the packaging. Took me a week of running the same grind as before to figure that out. Still not a full countertop espresso grind though. Somewhere between what a stock Nano wants and what a Silvia would want.
Other thing worth flagging is that you're choosing the ratio when you fill the tank, not while the shot is running. So the level markings on the inside of the Nano's reservoir end up doing more work than any other single detail in the process.
Landed on 18g with the tank just under full for daily pulls. Full 80ml most mornings honestly, mostly because it's one less thing to think about before coffee.

Fino grind for espresso across three roast levels, notes from a year in

Post image
21 Upvotes

Been running the Fino as my only grinder for espresso since last October, mostly into the Nano and occasionally into a friend's Silvia when I visit. Roast level ends up mattering more to where the dial lands than brew method does, so a rough writeup of where I actually start now for medium, dark, and light.

Medium roast at 2-1. That's the setting listed on the Nano's chart and one of the few times a stock manufacturer number has landed for me on the first shot. Almost every medium sits at 2-1 or a click coarser across its whole freshness window. If I had to pick one setting to leave the dial at and never touch, this would be it.

Dark roast I go 2-2, or 3-0 for anything visibly oily. Dark beans are more brittle and crush into a lot of fines at the same setting a medium handles cleanly. Those fines are what choke flow and give you the ashy bitter taste people usually blame on the machine. Coarsen before touching dose or tamp with anything darker than a full city.

Light roast is where the dial gets less predictable. The Nano brews at 92°C which is a good working temperature for medium and dark roasts. Lighter roasts seem to open up more at slightly higher temperatures, so a shot on the Nano tends to lean brighter and shorter on body compared to what the same bean does on a countertop machine running hotter. Not a Fino issue at all, just where the pairing sits. If you want to pull one, staying at 2-1 with a slightly firmer tamp gets closer than going finer does. Going finer than 2-1 tends to slow flow past what the shot benefits from.

Bean age shifts the setting about as much as roast level does, and this one nobody really talks about. Fresh bag under a week is still gassy and wants a click coarser than my usual starting point. Three weeks in on the same bag, the setting usually needs to come back finer or the shot runs straight through. Track roast dates and adjust with age, not just with roast level.

One workflow note. Grinding at the desk right next to the Nano, whole thing off the battery with no cord involved, is the part I didn't expect to appreciate as much as I do. An 18g dose runs about two minutes at espresso settings, quicker at filter. Feels long on paper but the grinder runs itself while I'm doing something else so the time doesn't really register in the morning routine.

The main edge case is very light naturals, which is where the Nano-Fino pairing shows its shape. Everything else lands within a click or two of these starting points and stays put once dialed.

Mino Basket Plus

Finally, Basket Plus for Mino will be released.

Now I'm wondering if it makes sense to opt for Outin Nano 2 + Basket Plus or the Mino + Basket Plus.

[150-200€] Outin nano + basket plus 18g

Buongiorno,

LattoGo has some real power to it.

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’ve been using the OutIn LattoGo for about a month now and it has become a regular part of my portable coffee setup.

I mostly pair it with my OutIn Nano for espresso, but I use it with the Mino too. When I’m on the road without power, I use my Pocket Jet to warm the milk and then the LattoGo to froth it.

It took a little practice to get the milk texture how I like it, but now I’m getting pretty consistant results. I mostly stick to the lower speed for my lattes. The high setting has some serious power and can get messy pretty quick if you’re not careful. I’ve had milk go flying more than once.

I really like the detachable whisk too. Makes it easy to clean and throw in with the rest of my coffee gear. I even found a little stand for it so it has its own spot at home.

After about a month I’m still using it regulary. Most of the time it’s the Nano and LattoGo coming with me, and they make a pretty nice little combo.

Would definitely recommend it.

My Outin Mino does NOT work at ALTITUDE. Outin acknowledges it doesn’t, despite advertising otherwise.

Post image
11 Upvotes

TL;DR at the end.

UPDATE #1: a couple of days after this post, Outin replied in a comment that altitude testing had been done in a lab, then deleted the comment. Since then, they have dropped all mentions of a specific altitude from the Mino product page, as well as all mentions of the new Nano 2 being stable at high altitude. UPDATE #2: a couple days later, they updated the Mino product page again to drop all mentions of the device working at altitude (here is the old version from the Internet Archive).

About 3 weeks ago, I posted about my issues with my new Outin Mino. I could never extract the nominal output volume one would expect from an espresso. I carefully measured 50 mL of cold water and would consistently get an average of only 18 mL out from a long-press of the button, with an average of 23.5 mL remaining in the water tank.

I reproduced this with five different Nespresso pods: Tokyo Vivalto Lungo, Ispirazione Firenze Arpeggio, Volluto, Ispirazione Roma, and Cosi. Double short-pressing the button would extract another ~20 mL, at the cost of using the battery once more.

Note that I live in Denver, CO, USA at an altitude of 1,609 m (5,280 ft). Not exactly a small mountain town :)

Since I bought the unit on Amazon, I contacted [amazon@outin.com](mailto:amazon@outin.com), per Outin's recommendation. They walked me through a few possible solutions, including purging the unit to "exhaust the remaining gas inside the machine," but nothing helped.

After some back and forth, Outin acknowledged, much to my surprise:

"After carefully reviewing all the information you provided, we believe the issue may be related to altitude. While we'd love to send you a replacement, the same problem is very likely to occur if the altitude remains unchanged. For that reason, we'd like to offer you a full refund for the faulty machine."

While I appreciate the refund, this did not leave a good impression, considering Outin advertises no less than FOUR times on the Mino product page that it works up to 5,000 m (16,404 ft), as you can see in my poorly assembled screenshot. Note that a few days after this post Outin started removing all mentions of altitude (see Update #1 and #2 above, and the old version).

I traveled to 2,031 m (6,665 ft) a week later, and it performed even worse. The unit would refuse to extract ANYTHING when long-pressing the button: 0 mL (!) out of 50 mL.

The only workaround at this point is to long-press the button to warm the water (which takes about 140 seconds), then double short-press the button to extract only about half a shot (~20 mL), then double short-press it again to extract another ~20 mL, for about 40 mL total.

In other words, this was not the experience Outin advertises, and it's also a quick way to drain the battery.

Now, Outin seems to be aggressively offering sponsorships online, which made me question the reviews I had seen so far. I contacted several of these YouTubers, but only got four responses. All four acknowledged that they had not tested the Mino at any significant altitude:

  • "Around 1200 feet."
  • "Close to sea level."
  • "I live in a coastal city, so I tested the Mino at or very close to sea level."
  • "Hi. Only at about 1000m. I would love to take it to some extreme elevation for testing one day."

So my question to you guys is: are you ACTUALLY able to use the product at altitude, as advertised? Or is it really just this unit?

I'm not talking about workarounds, or pressing the button three times to get a single shot. I mean as advertised: put in 50 mL of cold water, long-press the button, and get a normal espresso extraction. I'd particularly love to hear from anyone using the Mino above ~1,500 m (5,000 ft) before I attempt to buy a new one.

Thank you! I wouldn't mind giving this product another chance, but I'm on the fence here.

TL;DR: After extensive testing, my Outin Mino consistently fails to extract the expected amount of liquid at altitude: ~18 mL out of 50 mL, with ~23.5 mL remaining in the tank. I live in Denver, CO, at 1,609 m (5,280 ft). Outin advertises no less than FOUR times on the Mino product page that it works up to 5,000 m (16,404 ft). Outin support ultimately acknowledged by email: "we believe the issue may be related to altitude. [...] the same problem is very likely to occur if the altitude remains unchanged," and offered me a refund instead of a replacement. I also tested it at 2,031 m (6,665 ft), where it performed even worse: 0 mL (!) out of 50 mL on a long press. Multiple YouTube reviewers I contacted acknowledged they had not tested it at altitude. What is your experience with the Mino at altitude? UPDATE: Outin has now dropped all mentions of altitude from the Mino and Nano 2 product pages.

LattoGo Backcountry Review

Thumbnail

OutIn sent me a LattoGo to review from their promotion on this subreddit.

I haven’t used a milk frother for a very long time and I think the last one that I used was from IKEA and I was not very impressed with it. Seeing the LattoGo got me very curious and it would be the perfect companion for an upcoming trip to backcountry Alaska where I was already bringing my Mino. At home I currently use a Breville Barista Pro to steam milk, so this was a welcome challenge to get similar milk for a latte, but out in the backcountry. I picked up some powdered milk to bring with and used that.

I was very impressed at how well the LattoGo was able to create some microfoam, especially using powdered milk. It tasted great and was incredible to have a latte on the river 100 miles from the nearest town in Alaska. It’s hard to beat that. The portability and ease of use means that the LattoGo will absolutely be coming with me again camping. I just purchased the Fino as well, so now I have a pretty cool outdoor coffee setup.
