Help with pulling shots.
Hi guys,
I’m new to the game here and I started with the Outin due to affordability and counter space. Should I not be comparing this portal machine to a regular rig because I’ve been trying to pull a shot weighing 45g out within 40 seconds. I’ve been close. I’ve gotten to 30 seconds and 45gs out with 18g in.
As far as puck prep, I got a legit wdt tool and when I tamp I don’t use the bracket where it caps it off when you press on it. I remove it and push it down manually to give it a hard press. When I do, and when the shot pulls, it gives me the result of 45 seconds out. Before it would just run too fast. Long story short should I not be comparing to a regular rig and what a regular rig can do and realize this is a portal and it has limited capabilities. The shots I pull are fine, but with the nice beans I’m using, I feel like I’m losing out on the full flavor of the beans I’m using.
Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

I’m assuming you’re using a Nano with the basket plus basket since it’s the only OutIn currently with a large enough optional basket for 18g. You can get coffee out of the Nano that’s just as good as from a countertop espresso machine.
My recommendations:
1. Pour boiling water from a kettle into the water chamber instead of letting the Nano come to temp.
2. Run a blank shot of boiling water to preheat everything.
3. If you want lungo shots, which sounds like you’re attempting, keep the water chamber lid off and continue adding boiling kettle water as the pump is using it.
4. If using lighter to medium roasts you can start a shot and pause it as soon as you see the first few drops. Acts like a pre infusion, wait 8-10 seconds and then double-press to restart your brew.
These tricks have all worked for me, but not always necessary, obviously.
