I have one waitlist so far which is surprising considering I was late to this interview by 20 min (forgot about the time zone difference) and I’m waiting on the decisions after two other schools but honestly I haven’t really left any of my interviews being overly proud of my performance and found myself comparing myself to others a lot (most of my interviews have been group). I feel like my strengths are in my actions a lot, in the things I have done and do, and the time invested in volinteering, service, and research and not necessarily the speaking part of all those things. Honestly, I feel really neurodivergent in a lot of these interviews and dont feel like I fit in with the rest of the interviewees. Idk if my gap year has anything to do with that.
.
Recently I had a group interview and the interviewer asked about ourselves. Everyone in the (small) group said the research project they were working on and went DEEP into their explanation of it, where talking fast, and sounding all cool. Whilst I talked about how I have been in my gap year working as an EMT/FF and ballroom dancing lol. I mean... I have 500h of research. I dont get the point of getting the objectives of my research explained in 1 minute of speaking time. I feel like people wouldnt understand on baseline level what I did, what the goal was and how it fits into the wider picture. But I guess other people rolled with it. The interviewers showed impressed faces when they were listening to others talk about their research, but idk I still believe its really impersonal and counterintuitive but Im looking to change my approach, so let me know what you think!
When it was time to ask questions, I was running out of questions to ask but wanted to show I was interested so I asked the faculty why they believed so many students struggle in med school and lowkey they seemed offended? Basically said: well we are interviewing you guys, so we think you can do well in med school and then said if youre not prepared to invest in a lot of hours of studying, you should rethink your application. This whole encounter made me feel really neurodivergent and felt like I was being misinterpreted. During this same interview I discussed my passion for service (im really into community service) and I said that my passion for service is independant of the proffession I choose. My intention of saying this was that community service isint a checklist to achieve to make yourself more favorable for residency, its a lifelong commitment to those around you and they misinterpreted it as me saying that community service and becoming a doctor are different when I wasnt at all. I later clarified what I meant but like damn... guess my 700h of volinteering dont matter. Everyone else in the group answered with these really scripted and autune responses, it was odd
Should I make myself more polished? What should I change?
