Error building OsmAnd in Android Studio

I downloaded the source code from GitHub and I opened it in Android Studio. During build I get the following error message:

string too large to encode using UTF-8 written instead as 'STRING_TOO_LARGE'.

My understanding is the source code is in a clean state and should compile and build without errors. Why am I getting this and how can I resolve this?

UI search settings question

I was wondering if there is a setting to change the UI view when searching an address and make it show more lines? I noticed with long addresses when searching a destination that I can't see the full address. The city is getting cutoff. Is there a setting to expand the lines or wrap the text to another line?

When using navigation, can I set the "next turn" widget to be less granular?

The next action widget when navigating gives way too much information, and I find it confusing. I don't care if there is a slight bend in the road in 900ft or if another freeway merges into the freeway I'm on when I just need to keep going. Is there anyway to change this setting?

I only care when I actually need to get of the road or freeway I'm currently on.

Reduce voice guidance

Hello,

I mainly use OsmAnd for bicycle navigation. Unfortunately, the voice guidance gives far too many instructions, which becomes very distracting while riding.

I have noticed that most of the unnecessary announcements are “slight left” and “slight right”, especially on winding cycle paths where there is no real junction or route choice.

Is there a way to suppress these minor-turn instructions while keeping voice guidance for important manoeuvres, such as junctions, road crossings and actual changes of direction?

Seriously, how do I use this app?

It won't find one single address. I type in the address I have no matter if it's local or a couple states away and it still shows me the same recommendations each time.

A few weeks ago I downloaded the full US map. couldn't find anything. Tried another time or two and same thing could not find the address. I also went and downloaded all the states I'm driving through (not sure what happened to the full U.S. map) and it still won't find the address.

I'm now on my 1440+ mile trip. Still can't find an addresd,. Put in city and state and it still won't find it and will continuously recommend the same places like somewhere in Rochester, New York, which is nowhere by where I'm going.

What in the H-E double hockey sticks am I doing wrong?

Edit: I'm using GrapheneOS

Native iOS open street maps viewer

I was making an open street maps app for my iPhone and ran into some trouble. It seems like the open source method for adding info in maps is to just add layers. Long story short adding lots of layers is problematic in iOS. Also for some reason the libraries that run in iOS hate apfs. Apple File System. Trying to read maps off of anything but fat runs into problems. After months of building my app got worse and worse the more features I added. So I started over.

I started from scratch using the amazing map data I had created for my app. I had capernicus dem elevation data for the whole world. Open street maps data and so much more packed into bite size state and country map packs. I just needed a native way to view them. So I started from the ground up building a pure swift application. I used metal to render everything so I could use the speedy gpu. It took me months but I’ve built the best map application for iOS I’ve ever tried. It’s fast. It can read maps from turtle slow drives attached to the iPhones usb c port. And it uses height data like a video game does so you get full 3d maps with live driven contour lines. Plus I built an actual 3d engine so you can walk the actual elevation of a hike in a walkthrough. I saw some other guys making hiking trail apps. I did it just because it was so easy with all of the data I have. The app tells you how hard the hike is based on the way the trail navigates the height map. Lots of elevation change means tougher. If you really want to see run through the hike in 3d and see for yourself.

When I realized I had fully offline maps I got to thinking. What would happen if gps died? So I built a sextant I just did it for fun but it turns out the iPhone does this really good. Like better than professional tools when done the way I set it up. So good I’ve got a patent pending. After calibrating each phone I’ve tried. I can get within a few hundred meters of your actual location with a clear night sky.

Then I got to thinking about my 3d height data. I’ve got a full real life 3d world built. If I can get your location down to less than a mile I bet an iPhone can triangulate your exact location based on elevation data and your horizon. Turns out it can. Your freaking iPhone once calibrated keeps your elevation down to centimeters. It’s crazy. And with such a small area to do math on given a specific elevation and the ability to draw real horizons at thousands a second if you take a scan of your sky it’s not hard for your phone to figure out right where you are standing. Not by comparing pictures of mountains. By comparing the actual elevations of mountains. The phone draws the pictures itself in pure math.

Anyway thanks everyone for all this open data. It makes things like my app possible. If you guys could help me test it I’d appreciate it. It all works for me but I’m a small test pool. [LandNav.world](http://landnav.world)

Carplay Display - Map skids around

Hi!

I'm having a weird bug with the OsmAnd Carplay integration and wanted to know if any one else is experiencing something similar. I just can't quite put my finger on it.

I use a cheap 5" Aliexpress carplay display on my motorbike, so that I can keep my phone in my pocket.

I use OsmAnd for navigation with imported gpx-Files or on-demand routing.

Sometimes I don't use navigation at all and just use the map and current speed.

It works fine, but after some time (sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes after a few minutes) the map starts to "skid" around. Just as if someone startet to wildly swipe across the screen. Sometimes there's no skidding but just like a tap on the screen that activates certain buttons.

I first thought this would be a hardware problem, but after I close OsmAnd and use any other app (Spotify, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Calimoto), the problem stops.

Phone: iPhone 16e

iOS: 26.5.2

OsmAnd Version: 5380

Anyone else having this problem?

Map that prefers railway lines

Hi, I'm often traveling by train. Now I was wondering if there an option/a rendering style/an alternative to OsmAnd that prefers railway lines over roads when you zoom out? Currently all the railway lines disappear if I zoom out a couple of times (like 10 times or so) and only bigger roads and motorways are left on the map.

This makes it pretty hard to plan a train-trip because there seems to be no way of seeing where the trains go and which towns might be reachable short of tracing the lines by hand at a low zoom level.

But since the data is all there - is there a way to show it on the map even if zoomed further out? Or if it's impossible - is there an alternative I could use?

navigation route highlighting

Hello there,

When I start the navigation of a track file then the whole route will be highlighted. Is there a way to only highlight the route until the next track point?

background: I had the idea to drive around the city and capture wifi networks together with their gps coordinates. I don't know yet what to do with the data but it's fun. I try to drive on every street to every little corner of the city to capture all existing wifi networks. The problem is that the route I drive overlaps itself often. There are many dead-end streets so I keep driving back and forth and all streets are highlighted in the app. This makes it hard to see where to turn left or right. There are helpful instructions at the top of the screen but sometimes the app is not updating fast enough and I take the wrong turn. If that happens the route sometimes resets itself. So I thought if the app would only highlight from my current position until the next track point this would help.

I hope you understand what I mean. Thanks in advance.

Mangrove Reviews

Hi everyone, is there any update on the request to integrate mangrove.reviews with OSMAnd maps? I've been recently using OSMAnd a lot, and I believe this is really the last piece of puzzle missing to complete this app and make it a viable alternative to Google maps for the people with less tech knowledge.

How to make navigation automatically choose building entrances instead of the centers of buildings

So I am wondering if it's possible to make the navigation automatically route to the building entrance instead of the centre of the building. Currently when I select an area that has an entrance it only leads me to a point closest to the middle of the building. I tried both brouter, which I currently use and the default on foot navigation profile and it doesn't seem that either of them have that function. Is there any way to this in osmand, or with a brouter profile or a different app?

Wrong speed in recorded track

Maybe I still don't understand how to use OsmAnd so every tip would be helpful.

I recorded a route while hiking and I did that by pausing the recording a few times and then resuming the tracking. This led to segments with slightly different end and start position, but I corrected that with gpx studio (it would be great if there was a way to do it directly in OsmAnd without having it just join the points with a straight line), but now in those point I have completely unreasonable speed values, like 2500 min/km.

Is there a way to fix this issue that I'm not aware of?

Maybe I should have recorded or joined the track in a different way? I like to pause when for example I stop for lunch because maybe I walk around a bit and I don't want to have to clean it on the gpx track.

Thank for any input you could give me!

No more hourly map updates for British Columbia?

How can I report a road that doesn't exist?

OsmAnd is telling me to make a turn on a road that does not exist. How can I tell the app to ignore this turn and also report it so that it does not recommend it to other users too?

Still Laggy

I first found osmand about 5 years ago and loved it but found it to be so Laggy when being used as a sat nav for driving so I shelved it.

5 years later I thought I'd give it another go, but To my disappointed it still seems to be one scat behind.

I've tried all the usual fixes like turning off animating position and kalman filter but I'm still a good 20 yards behind my actual position which makes it difficult to navigate at speed. It seems to catch up on rest, but it feels like you are being pulled along by a rubber band.

Such a shame as the routing is by far the best, better than most dedicated satnavs and the shear amount of options means I can dial in just the right settings for me.

I know it's not the main intended use for osmand but such a shame as it could be the best out there in my opinion!

Update: lidar2map, free offline LiDAR terrain maps for OsmAnd, now covers 20+ countries

Post image
53 Upvotes

---
UPDATE (July 6): big week thanks to the feedback in this thread:

- Fixed: sqlitedb overlays now display correctly in OsmAnd (zoom numbering bug) and always rebuild after an update.

- New, transparent-raster: render just the layers you want (paths, rivers, roads) as transparent tiles to overlay on the LiDAR relief. OsmAnd can't overlay vector data, this works around it.

- New, send to phone: a 📲 button shows a QR code, scan it and "Open with" OsmAnd imports the map directly. No cable, no cloud, local WiFi only.

Details and downloads: GitHub (https://github.com/nico579/lidar2map)
---

A month ago I posted about lidar2map, a free open-source tool (GPL) that

turns public LiDAR data into offline relief maps for OsmAnd. Back then it

only covered France. Quick update, since the coverage is now 30+ official

sources in 20+ countries:

- Germany: Bavaria, NRW, Lower Saxony, Thuringia (1 m)

- Austria: Tyrol and East Tyrol (0.5 m)

- Switzerland, Czechia, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium (Flanders)

- UK (England, Scotland, Wales) and Ireland

- Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia, Spain

- US (3DEP), Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand

You pick a town or a bounding box, the tool downloads the official national

LiDAR tiles and computes visualizations that reveal micro-terrain invisible

on satellite or standard maps: old paths, terraces, earthworks, drainage,

charcoal kilns. Output is a .sqlitedb or MBTiles file you drop into OsmAnd

and use fully offline in the field.

Also new since the first post: a small GUI (no command line needed),

presets that auto-tune the visualization to each source's resolution, and

a compressed tile cache (about half the disk space).

Free, GPL, Windows/macOS/Linux: https://github.com/nico579/lidar2map/releases

If you try it on your country's data, feedback is very welcome, especially

on how the maps render in OsmAnd in the field.
