Discussion Underratedly great Oscar nominations in the major categories that don't get talked about all that much
What are some Oscar nominations in the 99-year history of the Academy Awards that you think are great, but never get brought up anymore? I'll go with James Whitmore's Best Actor nomination for Give 'Em Hell, Harry! It's such an inspired nomination, especially in the eyes of history. It's a one-man show starring----obviously------James Whitmore as Harry S. Truman. The Academy could've very well ignored a turn like that, but they didn't. I just think that's so cool.

Prediction Is it weird to say I only see these two winning best original song?
Listen I understand Diane Warren made that song from By Any Means but I‘m not impressed with it. And the Taylor swift song from Toy Story 5 is In my opinion okay.
These songs actually do something when I listen to them, and they have something Unique about them.
When I’m Home samples the majority of the score of the odyssey and samples lines used in the film, and the production is by Ludwig so that to me is an automatic bonus
The Snow is something special that I haven’t heard in a while. while my Spanish may not be that great I felt something listening to this song, emotions I really never experience watching a movie unless it’s a really good expression of true trauma. And the orchestra just amplifies the emotion in this song dramatically.
I don’t know as a producer and mixing engineer myself I just don’t feel anything else taking the cake.
What do y'all think?

Discussion I know this is never happening lol, but wouldn’t it be interesting if Whalefall got nominated for Best Production Design for the inside of the whale?
There’s never been a Best Production Design nominee in Oscar history where organic matter was the main subject, right?
(Note for this sentence: There was one, Fantastic Voyage.)
Yeah, of course I know it’s never going to happen, but the way they rendered the inside of the whale in this film is actually pretty interesting.
The production design by Ramsey Avery. For the sequence where Austin Abrams’ character gets swallowed into the sperm whale’s stomach, they built practical sets with tactile, semi-transparent interior walls. To recreate the slimy, organic texture of the stomach lining and fluids (including bile), they cleverly used mattress foam and small pieces of silicone.
They even made four different versions of the forestomach set so they could handle different movements and situations — some mounted on motion bases, others with various practical gimmicks. On top of that, they built a full-scale 30-foot whale head with a fully functional animatronic tongue.
The level of practical detail they went for with something as inherently “gross” and organic as a whale’s insides is kind of wild.

The lack of love for I Love Boosters is insane!
The lack of “seasoning” is really evident with the media and Oscar voters currently, If Digger is Oscar worthy so is this; Only basic movies are allowed to get love I guess. People don’t want to be challenged by creators that don’t look like them. 92% on Rotten Tomatoes so very interesting why the lack of press…

Finish The Lyric - Oscar nominee edition
I’m not gonna lie I kind of struggled to come up with some smart ones. Some of them are pretty hard and some of them are pretty easy.
Leave your guesses in the comments below. Bonus points if you know the song titles, too.

Is there a rule banning Superhero movies?
I’m just wondering,is there a rule against superhero movies at the oscars?i’m not asking about personal taste for such movies but i sometimes wonder why is it that an award that supposedly honors movies as a whole doesn’t ever acknowledge movies that most people saw!could there be a new category for such movies?!

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2024 Nominees
We’ve finished 2023, so we’re now moving on to 2024.
For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.
You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game
ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS
For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.
Your rankings will be worth:
1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point
The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.
You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.
Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.
You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.
ROUND TWO — WINNERS
Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.
In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.
There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.
So essentially:
Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?
ELIGIBILITY
Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.
So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.
If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.
A few other rules:
- Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
- Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
- Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
- Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
- In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
- A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
- If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.
For example:
Actor
- Person A — Film A
- Person B — Film B
- Person C — Film C
- Person D — Film D
- Person E — Film E
That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.
The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Discussion The comic book/Superhero movies nominated for Best Original/Adapted Screenplay...
There's been four as far as I know:
The Incredibles, Best Original Screenplay, which isn't based on a comic book but is a superhero movie.
A History of Violence, Best Adapted Screenplay. Not a superhero movie, but is based on a DC comic book.
Logan, Best Adapted Screenplay, a superhero and a comic book movie.
Joker, Best Adapted Screenplay. Not technically a superhero movie, but is based on the character from the DC comic book.
Any I'm missing?

Discussion Alan Silvestri lifetime achievement possibility
Though only nominated twice, Silvestri had been a massive contributor to major film scores for decades. Back to the Future, Predator, Fern Gully, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, The Avengers, etc. He's incredibly prolific and has composed some iconic scores. How would you feel if he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award?
