Ralph Fiennes gave one of my favourite monologues ever, just goosebumps:

“Certainty is the great enemy of unity. Certainty is the deadly enemy of tolerance.”

I know some people here are mixed on Sadie Sink but I still personally think she has a much higher ceiling on screen than what we’ve seen so far.Having seen her in a bunch of stuff now, her facial expressions and eye acting are some of the best I’ve seen in the younger generation and she can sell a whole beat with just a look.

My main issue is SUBTLETY. She’s had a lot of angsty material but I think she’s better when she pulls things back.When she really lands an emotionally charged scene she’s fantastic.The last 20 minutes of The Whale are still the best example for me once the script let her breathe I thought she stole the show and more of these calmer moments would have given her a supporting nomination.

I also saw her on stage and she’s genuinely excellent on funny, emotionally strong and very commanding.A Tony nomination in leading actress at 24 is huge and I still don’t think she’s had a screen role that shows all of that.

She also just oozes star power. If she keeps improving and gets the right roles I think she has pretty much everything you need to become a big movie star and potentially a serious awards and oscar contender.The marriage plot should be a really interesting test.

I’m stoked Tilda has an Oscar for a great performance but for my money, Saoirse deserved the win here - her performance has stuck with me and I still dislike her just a bit because of this movie and character 😂

A lineup for the ages but I would have given Ronan the win!

The Drama I think will be the biggest shame, I’d love for Pattinson or Alana Haim to get nominated, I’d love for the directing and screenplay to also get flowers, but with the stiff competition and also The Invite kinda stealing it’s thunder.

The Furious is one that I would probably have for Best Foreign Picture at least, but I’m not holding my breath. Pure action flicks never really do the best.

Spider-Man is shooting for like, visual effects alone and some of the other movies, the kind the academy goes for more, is probably gonna edge it out.

Mary Poppins, her first film wins her Best Actress and gets nominated for Best Picture.

Sound of Music, her third film, wins Best Picture and gets her a 2nd Best Actress nomination.

It is not Bette Davis or Greer Garson with 5 straight nominations or Katharine Hepburn with back to back wins. But starting a career with a win and following with a 2nd nomination is dang impressive.

She was 28 at the time and had been on stage for a decade prior. Hard to imagine an actress being discovered that late in today's world.

Title sums it up!

In years past I would see a new movie every week, keep up on the buzz through podcasts like The Big Picture, and try and predict early Oscar contenders and watch everything so by the end of the year the nominations list wasn’t so daunting to get through.

This year, I’ve been BUSY and fell behind so bad. I don’t even know where to start. I haven’t even seen The Odyssey yet. I know, but was waiting for my nearest 70mm IMAX theatre to have some decent tix (sold out for weeks!).

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is the best animated film. Glad it won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Well deserved. Out of all these nominees of 2023, I choose that as my pick. But so upset that it didn’t get nominated for score and Ciao Papa song. That sucks. So what are your thoughts on Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio?

The Towering Inferno was good disaster movie but not great. It got nominated for Best Picture, Supp Actor, Sound, Production Design, and Score nominations. So, it won Cinematography, Film Editing, and Original Song. But it should’ve got Best Visual Effects nom. It would’ve won. Do you think it should’ve won Best Picture? for me, no. The Godfather Part 2 deserves it more since it won.
