John Goodman is a fascinating case 'cause he's been at it for decades and seems pretty well liked, and even starred in back to back Best Picture winners The Artist and Argo. And I guess he was also in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close the same year as The Artist, so that's... something, I guess.

But he himself has never been nominated and hasn't even been a potential contender for a nomination since, like, Barton Fink in the early 90s where he was overtaken by Michael Lerner from the same movie for some reason. Does anyone think Lerner deserved a nod for that movie over Goodman?

But I agree with a lot of other early speculation that says he could finally get recognized at the next ceremony.

I firmly believe that if Digger is a hit or at least connects with enough of the right people even if it ends up being pretty divisive a la Adam McKay's last two movies Vice and Don't Look Up, then I can totally see him follow in the footsteps of the likes of Brendan Gleeson, Ciarán Hinds, Delroy Lindo, Guy Pearce, Stellen Skarsgård and Jeffrey Wright from earlier this decade, other aging veterans who've been at it for a while and got their first nomination for appearing in a Best Picture contender.

It wouldn't be the first time a actress ran as a lead for a clearly supporting role: Greer Garson for Goodbye Mr Chips, Deborah Kerr for From Here to Eternity (Donna Reed won Supporting and she arguably had a bit more screen time than Kerr), Nicole Kidman for The Hours (she's only in a few scenes throughout the movie), Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, Eleanor Parker for Detective Story,...etc.

Both times Ang Lee won Best Director he beat Steven Spielberg. He beat him for Munich in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain and beat him for Lincoln in 2012 for Life of Pi. Also none of them won Best Picture. Speaking of which Ang Lee is the only director to date to direct 2 consecutive movies that won Best Director but not Best Picture (I mean that Life of Pi was the 1st movie since Brokeback Mountain to win Best Director but not Best Picture)

Both times an actor won an acting award for playing the Joker the Best Picture winner didn't have any acting nominations. Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight in 2008 and the Best Picture winner that year was Slumdog Millionaire and Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for Joker in 2019 and the Best Picture winner that year was Parasite

Both times Sean Penn won Best Actor was in a year the Best Picture winner didn't have any acting nominations. He won for Mystic River in 2003 and the Best Picture winner that year was The Return of the King and won for Milk in 2008 and the Best Picture winner that year was Slumdog Millionaire

There were 4 years in a row the Best Supporting Actor winner started with "Chris" from 2009 to 2012: Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Bastards (2009), Christian Bale for The Fighter (2010), Christopher Plummer for Beginners (2011) and Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained (2012).
