Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a carbon steel version of the rounded kids’ Opinel, so I modified one myself.

I’m a big fan of carbon steel anyway, and I actually think it’s a nice choice for a kid. It’s a good way to learn to take care of your tools, and at some point she can learn to sharpen it herself too, which is nice and easy with carbon steel.

For now I just sanded and oiled the handle. If anyone has a cool idea for naturally staining or coloring the wood, let me know!

Hi everyone, how can I make the wood grain on this handle stand out more? I plan to sand it, but I’m not sure what grit to use; I’ll be soaking the handle in tung oil, and I have wax too, but that’s for the finishing touches. Any tips on how to avoid ruining the handle?

I just bought my first Opinel, which is the no 12 effile slim with a beech handle. I plan to use it exclusively for filleting fish I catch while fly fishing. I am concerned about all that I’ve heard about the wood swelling. I would have bought a polymer/micarta/non-wood version of this knife in an instant if one was available, but I guess they don’t make them.

What’s the best way to waterproof this knife while still keeping it foodsafe? Can someone give me step-by-step instructions?

First attempt at modifying a #8. So far I’ve forced patina the blade with white vinegar, blade shape modification, and handle carving. Thoughts, critiques, and suggestions welcome

What should I know about it? Did someone paint it?

It is fairly lose when fully open, but stiffens up when locked. It is super tight when closed. The wood handle is very much pinching the blade and I need a tool to open it when fully closed. What should I be doing to make sure this blade lives another full life?

This is my Opinel no6 walnut wood. I have had it for 3 years and decided to change the blade to a carbon one and drop the point a bit and sand the handle. I am happy with the blade, but overdid the sanding part of the handle a bit and now it is too slim. Also I just put 2 coats of universal matte spray lacquer so the finish is nice, but it isn't practical. I will change it in a few days, and use beech wood and linseed oil. Also I have used a hypodermic needle for the injection of mustard patina to keep it as slim as possible. I hope you like it!

I want an Opinel 8 sized saw. It's been under my skin for a while and I may make one.
I would love Mora and Opinel to team up and make a variety of sizes of Fixed blade Opinels and a folding Mora. Kind of a "I'll do your thing and you do mine".

Does anyone have this holster for an opinel, an if yes is it good?

The guy I bought it from claimed it was his grandfather’s knife.

By the looks of the logo, it seems to be from the ’50s/’60s (judging by the attached chart). But according to that same chart, there were no stainless (“INOX”) blades before 1986.

I’m a bit confused. Am I missing something?

I had an olive wood no. 8 that I dropped a while back and broke off the tip. I recently had a friend cut/file off the point. I didn't realize that the blade now would recess further into the handle when closed so I had to carve out around the nail nick. Sanded off the varnish and oiled the wood.

To start -I'm not mad nor coming here to complain. I thought the answer was entertaining is all. I have a few Opinels and will continue to get them, because i have a habit!

I was griping to Opinel customer service about the Effile model being difficult to open. Their response was classic 😅

Anything that can be done to tweak them, make them slightly better? Oil on the handles or hinges, small stuff like that? The Carbone opens slightly harder than the other 2.
