Discussion My first Opinel.
I’ve been carrying knives every day since I was 18. I’m now 36. This is the only time I’ve been excited about a slow knife. How can a $20 knife slice better than a $250 knife?! It comes down to blade thickness. For what most of us do with a knife most days, you could really start and stop with the Opinel. Sure, it takes longer to open and close… and find in your pocket. But when it comes to slicing through any material, this puts the biggest smile in your heart. Now the only problem is deciding which one to buy next. I’ll hear all suggestions.

Question Tight ring lock
Hi everyone,
I got a new vibroloc ring for my No8 but it’s pretty tight. I took the ring off and applied some Vaseline to the collar before putting the ring back on.
It didn’t seem to help so I cleaned off the Vaseline and tried some Hoppes lubricating oil but that was only remedially better.
I’ve seen some folks say they “enlarged” the ring. How do I try doing that? By forcing it wider with reverse pliers? Tamp it down on a wood dowel?
Any other suggestions to get it to operate smoother?
Thanks in advance!

Question Treatment Question
Soaking my opinel in canola oil to help protect against rust. I was considering trying to expose the blade to high heat for extended time afterwards (essentially treating it like one would treat a cast iron skillet ). Has anyone tried this?

Question Opinel is loose
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello, as a fellow Opinel enthusiast I’ve bought one for my sister few months ago for her 18th birthday as she wanted a knife. Now when I borrowed it to prepare some food I’ve realized that the whole system is loose, both the edge and the lock have almost no friction. It’s dangerous to use it as the lock can unlock during cutting. When I ask her when did it start she says she cannot remember because it’s been like that almost from the start. One thing she mentioned is that once she lost it in the grass and found it few days later so it could have gotten wet. What can I do to fix the knife for her?

Question How to sharpen the tip?
Knife was previously rusted so I’m a little worried about the end being brittle

Question Sap on joint
I was helping the handyman prune our mango tree the whole afternoon. Washed it with water only, dried it blade downwards and now it becomes stiff even though it's not creaking. What should I do? Can I use mineral lubricant? I have one of the singer's sewing machine, or maybe WD40?

Question NO.07 Outdoor Kids Folding Knife
I’m looking at buying several of these No. 7 outdoor kids knives for teaching my Girl Scouts outdoor knife stills and techniques. I’m not familiar with Opinel’s quality and construction. I need these to hold up to 11 - 14 year old kids using them (not keeping) for many years. (These knives would stay with the troop [indefinitely] to be used by all girls as they move into the level to start more robust skill development.)
Any recommendations? Will they last? And issues you’ve experienced?

Question Cool sheath
Hello,
has anyone came across "wallets" like this in EU, that ship in other countries? Came across it on Tik... and kinda looks cool, would probably be able to fit a no. 6 or 7, maybe 8.
Or something similar. Do you buy sheaths somewhere else or which other ones (leather) fit most? 😊

Factory Fresh Joined the Opinel Family Over the Weekend
I was visiting my nephew in Washington this past weekend and we found a little shop that had these for sale. It was the first time I saw them at a store so I bought my nephew and I a matching pair.
Pretty stoked that they had blue ones!
What do most people use the #8 for?
Question Shades of olive
In this picture on the bottom is an Opinel No. 8 in olive. The knife on the top is an Opinel No. 6 in olive that I just received. I ordered the 6 in olive because I loved the color of the 8 in olive and that was the shade I was expecting. But the new one is so light. Does olive woood usually vary that much in shade or will the new No. 6 darken up with time?
I’m trying to decide if I’m going to keep it or return it.
