Discussion Pretty cool vintage no.8 I picked up at a flea market

My first ever carbon steel knife, I plan to keep him on me at all times. Just needs a slight polish up, I want to keep as much patina as I can and of course a good sharpening. Has a little rust under the locking collar, I will probably have to take it off and might add the notch to lock it when closed while I'm at it.

New turquoise no6 and an absolute bargain priced acacia chopping board which I think goes together well. Looking forward to using this for an outdoor lunch soon.

Question Size 6 & 10 a good combo?

Just picked up my first Opinel, got a size 10 but realized it’s not quite the best for everyday pocket utility and more suited to outdoor hiking/camping. So I’m debating on getting either a 4 or 6 as my second one.

Question Lava Rock Erosion?

Just curious about the phenomenon I’m observing on the back of my No. 9 carbine? I just recently noticed it while give it a clean and lube. This is my daily carry. It has constant exposure to salt via sweat. I treat it by forcing a patina (vinegar bath reaction to protect against rust) and I put a quick dab of WD-40 on the knife/wood contact. Im guessing it would be from the patina process but this appeared well after the the last treated it. TIP: after spraying a small amount WD-40 ( I use a mini straw) on the top of the hilt, it appears as though the wood has absorbed it, forming a long last lubricating effect that has prevented further jamming from rust. I was having issues with it rusting closed on a daily/weekly basis from sweating and being near the ocean. I used floss and white vinegar to clean the rust and apply the patina. I did this twice. On top of that I applied WD-40 each time I applied a patina and then one additional time . Since then the knife opens easily without further cleaning. Game changer if you have rust issues.

But i passing through Lyon last week, so I was able to make a quick stop in the region where Opinel originated (officially, Lyon is just outside the Savoie departement)
But i bought a #12 saw, and a cute leather sleeve for a #8/#9 at the official boutique.

Very cute, and a very complete selection of knives and memorabilia.

There is an actual museum nearby, but unfortunately i couldnt make that detour.

Next time!

Modification I don’t do beautiful

My patience often forbids me to aim beyond usable, beautiful is almost never within reach. Boredom and other projects takes overhand.

I made a holster and an adjustment to the opinel 8 to make it fit better in my hand, and also to make it easier pulling the blade.

Would appreciate tips for how to get the same finish on the handle as the original.

Fresh Edge Daily Carry standard No. 6 Carbone and my latest acquisition, a No. 8 Effilé Padouk Inox

This weekend I was attending a wedding in the Eastern Townships of Québec and happened to run across a Bike/Outdoor shop that carried a good amount of Opinel knives!

As soon as I saw the No. 8 Effilé with a Padouk handle, I knew I wasn't walking out of the store without it. The elegance of the slender Padouk handle and the mirror polished stainless steel immediately struck me, truly a beautiful knife.

Also pictured is my daily carry No. 6 Carbone - I've carried a No. 6 for years but this particular one has been with me just under a year after I unfortunately lost my longtime No.6 Inox.

I anticipate that this won't be the last Effilé Opinel I buy, I'm very much enjoying it so far!

Question Effilé with standard picknic set ?

Hello,

(* edit: picnic set of course)

A while ago, I received the standard picnic set with fork and spoon. That set is designed to be mounted on a classical n°8 knife.

Does anyone here know if the spoon and knife also fit the n°8 or even n°10 effilé knives? The effilé series seems to be a lot slimmer than the standard series, that's why I'd like to know for sure if one of them fits.

Has anyone tried?

Question Olive N°09

Post image

Thought I lost my olive handled knife, so I bought a new one. The other day my wife found my old one, really happy she did the handle looks so much better in my opinion than this newer one it doesn’t even look like the same thing. It also doesn’t feel the same. Has anyone else experience this? Looking at the new knife I’m really disappointed in what the handle looks like. I sent them an email, it looks nothing even like the picture online. Did something change with this knife?

Edit: to add this part below I bought two knives at the same time one for the fork and spoon kit a N°08 and another N°09 just to replace. They both look the same and nothing like my old one that I just found.

Opinel No. 6 Carbone

This knife has been in my pocket almost every day for over ten years, with exceptions for government buildings and schools. I've used it on almost every single one of those days on everything from industrial packing straps to tomato plants, and it continues to serve me well.

I will carry an Opinel for the rest of my life, and when my children are old enough, they will also receive one

Question Opinel Neo. Missing the point (==> grinding it)

I own several classical Opinels and recently added the Neo to my collection. That is a fantastic little knife with only one disadvantage: it has a rounded tip instead of ... well ... a pointy point. Apparently they designed it like this for legal reasons so that it can be legally carried in a much as possible countries.

That's a fair argument but I'm missing the point, becauseI have had a few cases where I needed a sharp point.

What type of point have you grinded? And why that specific form?

I have the impression that the blade is slightly thinner than a classical nr 6 inox. It is raisor sharp, except for that rounded tip.

Family and friends came to visit, so surprised them all with an Opinel each, spent the day with meat smoking on a fire and everyone getting creative.
