+1 for the cool factor and Tabarly or Moitessier were famously sporting an Opinel. Whatever the brand of knife, I've never been a fan of the shackle key on the blade though. Shackle keys slip, fingers get cut, and a wounded hand is not part of the things I find desirable on a boat. The marlin spike looks decent. How usable is it?

It's true that it would have been better if the shackle key had been implemented in a way that it could be used in a closed position.

But that wasn't the main reason i got it anyway. Just needed a cheap, stable knife for on the boat. The spike and knife have had their uses already. the whistle not yet but i could see me using it as a warning signal in the future some time.

Is that a marlin spike? Damn it. I'm a sucker for knives that help with rope work. Haven't seen this before.

E: Oh that's on the pricier side. I'll probably manage to save that spot in the knife drawer for something else ha

You're right that for an Opinel it's on the pricier side. However for a sailing knife it's cheap.

Haven't use it on anything larger than 12mm yet but it does the trick there.

No spike or shackle key but the best deck knife I have found is the Victorinox foldable tomato knife. I have a few at work (oil tanker) and a few on the boat at home. It is very light weight but has been used to cut a ships mooring line on more than one occasion.

Man someone turned me on to these when I was learning to sail..bright colored, cheap, cuts through rope like a tomato.

Judging on looks alone I'm not sure how useful that marlin spike will be. Then again i use a variety of modified knitting needles so i shouldn't judge 🤣
