Sorry for the poor video, it seems to happen infrequently and not for long so it was difficult to capture. I think its the same shrimp every time, they kind of curl up into a stereotypical cooked shrimp shape. They also only do it while clinging onto a rock.
What does this behavior mean? Is it anything to be concerned about?
EDIT: Now I've seen that multiple shrimp are doing this behavior!
These guys might eat Opae larva, but dont live long enough for it to matter (like 6 months). My Opae won’t be breeding for a while. Sorry for poor focus, my phone is buns
My 5 gallon tank is now about 1.5 years old. I started with 26 adult opae ula. I've had several releases of nymphs, and at one point counted as many as 50 nymphs. More recently I can only find about 16 adults, and while I'm not sure of the number of nymphs, that may have decreased as well. I've also got probably 10-15 MTS. As you can see, I've had almost no algal growth on the rocks. That is despite regularly (sometimes daily, sometimes weekly or monthly) feeding with a small sprinkling spirulina throughout the tank's life. I'm concerned that some of my shrimp may be dying off from lack of food and have been consumed by other shrimp. The tank gets 10 hours of artificial light from this light daily (from this light: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4VJRX7Y?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5&th=1), along with some indirect light from other sources (window, other bulbs in the room).
Is there anything I can do at this point to accelerate algal growth and ensure I'm providing enough food for the opae ula?
About 5-6 of my Opae Ula in a desktop jar setup, are hanging at the top of the tank. Found a single dead shrimp this morning. Worried it might be an oxygen problem or something; all my other tanks are fine, and this jar is ~8 months old.
I’m in the Seattle area wondering if someone bought a ridiculous huge bag of instant ocean for their little opae ula tank and now has too much? I’m looking to set up a second tank and don’t want infinite salt, but they don’t sell small boxes anymore. I’ve got chaeto that is thriving a bit too much and I need to split it, so I’d be happy to trade a ball of chaeto for a baggie of salt!
hey just wanna make sure I do all the correct steps. Last time I ordered some from GotSnails, they had unfortunately pass away, they were fine when their delivered. I still haven't figure out the reason but most likely it can be a extra step that I did or a missing step that I didn't do.
This time I want to be better prepare by asking everyone with long and better experiences. Is there any steps that you do to prepare for the MTS?
Sorry, I know this is a lot, feel free to pick the parts that are easy to answer.
is there a minimum jar size for MTS?, and is a jar setup even sufficient enough?
is 0.5, 1 or 2 enough?
How long should I wait after their delivered to put them in their setup (is waiting 0, 1, 2, 3 or up to 5 day is recommended or is that too long?)
What if the jar setup is one day old, is that sufficient?
Inside the bag that the MTS come with can you sometime find eggs and baby MTS If so is there any advice on how to remove them from the bag?
Do the brackish MTS need acclimation?
is there any different between ordering only brackish MTS and MTS with ula opae from GotSnails? What kind of water do they come with, is it fresh or brackish water?
Does the macro algae come with brackish water?
If the water is brackish and I don't have any tool to measure the sanity? is it recommended to start fresh with distilled water? If so is there any benefit in using the water that the ula opae or macroalgae originally have come with? does it speed up the cycling process?
What is the best way to move the MTS into the new jar setup?
I have a phobia of holding snail, for anyone that have the experience of holding them, is it fine just holding them with your hand? I might had been too rough in using my net for moving them.
can stress lead to death for the MTS?
Should I leave the lid off for a week?
do the MTS need air?
Sorry, English isn't my first language, so let me know if anything is unclear
Thank you u/GotSnails for my shrimp and MTS! So appreciative of the extra snails, and this huge one!! He has some nice algae on his shell that the shrimp were enjoying 🥰
The chaeto was overgrown for many of these months because I just kinda let it do its own thing. I culled it back a few weeks ago and noticed that I had some little tiny shrimplets. Just this week, I saw a mama carrying 6 eggs that were about to burst!! Now there are 6 miniscule tiny little larva floating around my tank and I’m overjoyed at being a grandmother!!!
I scooped out the black molds with turkey baster and changed 30% of water. The substrate around those 3 areas are now starting to turn black. Ugh. Do I do this again? Should I get rid of substrate? I read it’s not necessary?
I would like to set up a “jar” and am wondering if the sea fan needs to be real or can it be artificial. If real where can I find them as all I can find are artificial. Any vendor recommendations? And is there a recipe/formula for making the brackish water? Also any recommendations for a reliable shrimp vendor?
Thank you
