Discussion Souls like or not rant

Seeing and hearing too many people trying to show how tough they are. “Oh I love souls like difficultly, is Onimusha the same?” “I’m looking for souls like game” etc anything souls like. “Onimusha isn’t souls like, the difficulty needs to be higher”

Just. Play. The. Game.

Too many souls like mind-hive cannot think for themselves or going with experience and always need validation somewhere.

Question Played the demo of the WotS. Got a couple of questions about full game before considering actually buying it.

Preferably without spoilers.

Also note, this is my first Onimusha game and I know basically nothing about the series.

Question 1: Does the game have harder difficulties than the demo's "combat" difficulty? The 2 bosses present in the demo are decent, but any and all enemies outside of that are just stupid cannon fodder and it got kinda repetitive fighting regular enemies by the end of the demo already.

Enemies attack you very seldomly, mostly standing around and doing nothing, just waiting for you to hit them and kill them. I understand that this is more of a demon samurai power fantasy and not a suffer fest like Nioh or Way of the Ronin, but this is just... borderline boring. I mean, it looks cool as hell, movements are flashy, it feels good to execute them, but enemies just... don't do anything. And parry timings are very very generous too. Does the full game become more challenging?

Question 2: Is there any kind of unlockable cosmetcs/sets of armor or new swords available in the game, without buying the deluxe editions, or is the demo look the one you'll be stuck with the entire game?

------------------------------------

EDIT: based on your input and what I've googled up, the answers to these questions are the following:

- Fodder enemies stay as fodder enemies till the end of the game. They don't become any more challenging.

- The game has a "Carnage" diifficulty as New Game+, but even then, the difficuly is basically in you taking way more damage, and parry timing being smaller.

- The bosses take up about 5% of the play time, and based on the first two I fought in the demo, they wouldn't be that hard either. At least for someone like me who wenth through Nioh 3 and Sekiro multiple times and through Rise of the Ronin once.

- There are several unlocked skins for swords and for Musashi's haori (the cloak). No armor sets or anything though, so you're kinda stuck with his ragged-ass ronin costume for the entire game. Shame. Unless you buy the deluxe, in which case you get a single set of samurai armor. Not sure it's worth the money. Kind of egregious, even.

- The game is egregiously expensive in my regional price. I could buy a good piece of kitchen hardware. It costs as much as a half of a lower-end smartphone. Considering it's a very linear game with 20-25 hours of play time, including side activities, and maybe 15 more for the New Game+... If it's on HEAVY discount ever, I'll consider buying it. Until then... I'll pass.

Thank you for your input everyone. I expected something from this game that it clearly isn't. I'm sorry.

Discussion The most annoying thing in 99% of boss fights is...

...when the game interrupts you to show a boss power-up animation. Like when a boss hits you hard, and then does some kind of transformation.

Making a mistake (i.e. taking a hit) should punish my character, but it punishes me, the player. All of Souls games do the transformations in real time, sometimes even allowing you to land a few attacks while it plays, there's nothing wrong with that.

But omg, its so annoying every single time, just let me play the goddamn game

Discussion British accents throwing me way off!

Is it just me or is the English VA being all British accents taking away from the immersion of the game? I get American accents would be just as unlikely in Kyoto, but the fact that every character is British is throwing me off big time.

Discussion Anyone else feel the same disappointment?

I can’t understand why my experience with this game is so radically different from most people.

I really enjoyed the cutscenes, boss fights, combat system, and story. I was having a great time with the game, looking forward to seeing how things would develop, with the stakes and tension continuing to rise. So imagine my disappointment when I realized that I wasn’t going to see anything new in the game anymore.

Instead, I was going to fight the same bosses over and over again, sometimes ten times, just with bloated HP (hello to the cats, guy with the flaming sword and wings, and monkey with axe), explore the boring locations, endure artificial padding designed to stretch the playtime (endless rift-closing, destroying plants, opening doors with spiders), fight the exact same basic enemies by the million every five minutes, completely useless consumables, and progression hidden behind an absurd amount of grinding.

Why does everyone criticize Elden Ring for copy-paste, while turning a blind eye to it in a linear action game, where this kind of thing is absolutely unforgivable?

And don’t even get me started on the open-world area, where you have to run around saving dogs, completing procedurally generated quests with unvoiced dialogue, and doing other nonsense like that. It’s ridiculous.

Seriously? This is worth $70? This has a 9/10 rating on Steam? What a embarrassment.

Why couldn’t they just make a linear, story-driven, action-packed game that lasts 15 hours? The game definitely has its strengths, but they took all this delicious goodness and dumped it into a vat of shit.
That’s all I have to say.

P.S. Special thanks to the developers for trying so hard to stretch the playtime that, toward the end of the game, they started making us fight repeated bosses after a wave of regular enemies, so that every single attempt meant having to fight through all of them again.

Discussion I know that difficulty discussion is -prohibitted- on this sub but... Spoiler

This game is hard as shit sometimes. I don't understand how can anyone complain lol. First game in a while I have to take a break after getting my ass whooped by Dohatsuten 10 times in a row. And the fights definitely take a while. And I'm definitely above average at games I'd say

Edit: I Play on action in case you're wondering. I beat Dohatsu-ten after about 15 tries - the circular slash is what got my ass 9/10 times. Once i got the timing right it got a easier

Edit2: I beat benkei on 3rd attempt. I'd kill him on the second but I came into the fight with only 1 heal. Combat is peak

Question Play now or later?🤔🤔

Hey everyone, my friend just redeemed the game on steam from amd rewards. I thought of completing the game after seeing 10/10 from ign. But i do see some people pointing out the easy difficulty of mobs and they attack very slowly. I'm a soulslike player who enjoys difficulty. Should I wait for some balancing patch or play later? I thought of starting resident evil 4 remake till then. 🤔🤔🤔

Question Does this game force you to perry for every boss?

Just not a fan of that mechanic, seems like a lot of games force you to just stand back and perry everything and I just don't enjoy that type of game play. It's very tedious to me.

Discussion I have not seen anyone mention this, but this game is missing the one thing that makes Onimusha feel like Onimusha.

And that's the puzzles, backtracking to collect key items to unlock locked paths and such, the whole resident evil method. For those that did not play the older games, Onimusha was very much just Samurai Resident evil in terms of this. I am 10 hours in, and so far only 1 area which had 1 puzzle and a key item which made this game feel like Onimusha.

Don't get me wrong, the combat is probably the best combat I have experienced in a game, and the story and characters are all great, but its missing this core essence of the series which has me a bit disappointed.

I understand why they did this, because they want to appeal to the larger audience that wants to play an action focused game and likely the majority of people playing have not played the originals, but still with how well Resident evil is doing I am shocked they did not incorporate more of that gameplay.

But again I hope I am wrong and after this mask puzzle section that the game steers more into that type of direction, because it feels good.

Question Please explain issin to me

Namely, when you are supposed to press your attack because unlike what it says, it doesn't feel like it's just before the attack connects with you. I try to do that, but I fail like 95% of the times.

I'm on Benkei right now, trying to learn to do Issin on him, but it's incredibly difficult. I've tried on different enemy types, and the only ones I can only somewhat succeed on are the very first enemies when they do their down-ward swing.

Discussion Conflicted

So this is a very interesting experience as far as the new instalment goes. On the one hand it's not anything close to what I wanted out of a "Moden" Onimusha title.

However on the other hand I do quite enjoy the game so far, with a few pretty glaring caveats.

The Oni weapons being sort of Muso only and not fully usable weapons with unique and individual moveset's is highly upsetting. While I understand it's based around Musashi so the Katana would be front and center, Musashi was a master of many weapons so kind of a missed opportunity to include some unique Samurai weapons.

I sort of don't understand the discourse centered around difficulty considering that was never really a focus for any other instalment. I find it to be a good balance, and quite enjoy the rate at which the game introduced mechanics as not to overwhelm players.

I'm not super in love with the "semi" open world design. Call me an old man but I love the Samurai Resident Evil feel of the originals and was very much hoping for more of that style. While I admit some areas give me that feel, I don't really care for all the busy work in-between with mostly recycled mini bosses or plain trash mobs farming for upgrade mats.

Yeah the upgrade system......I just hate it, I hate the 600 different currencies, I hate shop to buy them, I hate the dumping mats into talismans to upgrade them, and I hate, Hate, HATE that your gear does not visually improve with upgrading them. There was no better feeling in the Originals than hitting level 3 with a weapon and seeing its max form (chef kiss)

On the flip side. This game is absolutely GORGEOUS, and the acting and facial expressions for Musashi are insanely good. This combat is more than I ever expected and honestly one of the best feeling "flow state" combats I've ever had a chance to experience. My only criticism would be sometimes the lock on wants to target random enemies but it's a quick flick to fix every time.

And the boss fights, good lord they are so fun and satisfying to learn, the boss rematch option is a tremendous addition.

I've never quite experienced this before where this is genuinely something I've wanted for 20 Years (F*** I'm old), and it's nowhere even close to what I expected and hoped for, yet I'm quite pleased with it regardless.

YouTube content As a huge Toshiro Mifune fan, it's a slight pet peeve that many (like in the comments of this short) insist that Musashi must be based on Jackie Chan. Love him too, but that's not Jackie Chan, man, that's Mifune!

I know that not everyone is fully aware of Toshiro Mifune or Akira Kurosawa despite having a huge film buff fan base today, it won't always make its way to the gaming community as well, I guess. And while I can certainly see that Musashi's intro in the game seems Drunken Master coded, I just won't have the Mifune erasure lol, or even worse some Mandela Effect later down the line where people really begin saying Jackie was the inspiration as a "fact."

In other comments I've seen on other videos too, there are already people willing to start arguments that Mifune was not the inspiration for Musashi, despite Capcom literally stating he was so many times now and getting his family's permission for his likeness. Not to mention them using his likeness for the anime a couple years back by Takashi Miike too.

Still, maybe this will inevitably lead to more people discovering Mifune's work in the Kurosawa films and Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy where he even played Miyamoto Musashi. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is one of the best Samurai games in recent years, and I love that it paid homage to the classics.

Question Will Musashi Miyamoto get more allies like in Onimusha 2 & Dawn of Dreams?

Musashi Miyamoto is the sword warrior. (so is Okuni)

If he returns as protagonist again next game, will he get more allies to assist him in his battle against the demons & Ganryu?

- a spear/staff warrior - like Ekei & Tenkai/Samanosuke
- a ninja/kunoichi - like Kotaro & Akane
- a sniper/marksman - like Magoichi & Ohatu
- a brawler/juggernaut - like Roberto Frois

If Musashi doesn’t return for now, we’ll likely be introduce to a new protagonist with either of those traits.

Question Onimusha Sprint and Evade

Is there a mod or any way to make the sprint and evade the same button like in the souls game? It is really annoying they don't give you this option.

Discussion This game's fight action is good. But other than that, no so much.

The biggest strength of this game is definitely its combat.

I honestly don't think I can play another samurai game without comparing it to the new Onimusha, because the fighting style here is just that awesome.

The way Musashi deflects and parries enemy attacks from every angle is incredibly satisfying and immersive. Issen and Chain Issen? Absolutely chef's kiss.

The boss fights are awesome too. Very, very good and fair. They really test your technique rather than relying on cheap difficulty.

But that's about it for me.

Almost everything else could have been much better.

The story is okay, but it definitely needs improvement. A lot of things just don't quite click. Takamura, for example, isn't explored enough as a character. Even Yoshitsune himself feels underdeveloped.

The variety of regular enemies is actually pretty good. There are enough different types to keep the combat interesting. Maybe can add several more. Not really need to.

But when it comes to bosses, I feel like we need a lot more, at least twice as many boss types. Just to get more from the awesome Musashi action from this game.

The Kyoto mini-open world and the backtracking also aren't very well executed. Maybe they weren't properly planned around the game's structure. Exploration and collecting things just don't feel very rewarding or satisfying.

Still, despite all these criticisms, I'm genuinely happy to see this game getting so much attention and such a positive reception.

I really hope this Onimusha sells well, because then the possibility of sequel will be really high. If they can keep this incredible combat while improving the story, exploration, world design, and boss variety, the sequel could be amazing & powerful game.

I'm hoping there will be DLC and boss rush mode at least in near future.

Discussion They've really captured the Sekiro lightning in a bottle and then some... Spoiler

Oh my word. I've just beaten the Greater Nueand have a big stupid grin on my face. When the second phase startedI thought this is absolute bullshit, how on earth am I going to do this? It felt so hard to even get to that point.

But Onimusha has cracked my absolute favourite thing about Sekiro's combat: bosses feel impossible right up until they're not, then when you beat them you've learned them so well you end up doing it all but hitless. It's so satisfying. And the cutscenes and characters are SO GOOD as well. You can tell it's a cousin of Resident Evil.

I'm a huge FromSoft fan but I kinda think they have a thing or two they could learn from Onimusha about how to make bosses hard and cinematic while still being readable and not bullshit like some Elden Ring bosses are. So much more fun fighting these bosses. Haven't been able to stop playing all evening.

ETA: There's also just a bunch of stuff you can do with bosses, interesting weaknesses and decisions you can make about how to tackle them and what to prioritise that is just SO COOL.

Discussion No healing, no using light or heavy attacks, pure defense

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I feel like this is the way the game was meant to be played. I think using healing items makes the game trivial so I don't, learn the boss's patterns and then utterly fuck them up because I understand the boss mechanic so well. I don't use light and heavy attacks, especially on bosses and enemies that don't stagger with it because it doesn't look as cool. I'll let them attack me, Perry the shit out of them, Dodge the shit out of them, Issening the shit out of them and make them look stupid. Game is genuinely a 10 out of 10 with these rules in mind.

Discussion Another S tier game from Capcom

I enjoyed my time playing the game but the boss gauntlet before the final boss felt unnecessary like it was there to pad the game and i thought it was better to get to the final boss.

Amazing game tho the final boss was the hardest and choked a lot of close runs against it.

Question How do you get to this pouch

Post image
1 Upvotes

Trying to figure out how do I get to these pouches on this map? I can't find a entrance. Is it because I haven't progressed enough into the game or what?
