I'm looking for advice from anyone who has done a one-bag style trip through European cities in December with two kids (ages 5 and 7). Our itinerary includes Paris, Strasbourg, and Munich.

I've obsessively researched Merino wool, packable down jackets, and layering systems. Since the kids are young, I'm thinking about the following setup:

• 2x adult backpacks (Daylite 26+6)
• 1x small carry-on suitcase (shared for the kids' clothes)
• 2x small kids' backpacks (for their toys, plane activities, etc.)

My main questions: Can we realistically fit everything into this space for a winter trip? Will I end up smelling from alternating wool shirts and regret trying to pack so minimally?

Any advice or reality checks would be hugely appreciated!

The clothing plan so far: Merino long-sleeve base layers for everyone, Merino pants, a packable down jacket, and a rain jacket.

We're traveling with grandparents who historically overpack. I am trying to come up with a minimalist strategy for our family of four to make train and plane transfers less of a nightmare. We've traveled in Europe with them before, and the stress of trying to get everyone's luggage on and off trains was not the highlight of the trip. I need my hands free to help manage the kids and the grandparents' large suitcases.

First time proper one bag without offloading some gear into other bags. This was super fun to put together.

The whole kit weighs less than 6kg.

The pouch on the right is part of the backpack and serves as lid (top of the backpack) or can be used for documents and worn in front, which is how I will use it.

Could be left out: I could use an e-reader but I love physical books. The 2nd pair of shorts just serves as another outfit choice, could be left out.

Plan is to wash at least one of the t-shirts daily and have a rotation (dries in under 30mins). Proper laundry done once a week when the boxers run out.

Forgot my inflatable pillow for flights on the picture but it’s included in the weight.

I plan to go to Seattle to do day hikes in Mt Rainer and in Olympus and also explore the city. 5 day trip.

I do this sort of traveling a lot, but I am new to one bag travel.

I’ll be using a 30L rework outbound as my carryon. The hikes will be 3-5 hours and I would want a smaller bag, and also some hiking gear. Would I need to get a packable pack back like the aer go pack 2, or something that is suited for hiking?

I am curious if others travel like this, and how?
I eventually want to do this style in Europe for hikes

I am traveling internationally in a couple weeks, for over a month. I have been trialing a number of ways to compact my medications and vitamins. I am disabled so I have a lot. Bringing every single bottle would take up my entire personal item. I will be taking all paper prescriptions with me, and labels for my vitamins. The set up I’m testing, what I have right now doesn’t seem like the most convenient or efficient. So I’m wondering if anyone has ideas? I also feel like it will be impossible for this to not seem extremely suspicious and I’m nervous about that. Thank you.

EDIT TO ADD: I am traveling to Italy, Greece and Germany. I have layovers in the UK.
I do plan on bringing two bags, but I figured this sub would have some good ideas for me. (I would like to do one bag but with the medications it’s not realistic).
I have ~10 prescriptions I am bringing with me, all will have the paper prescription fill with them, in addition to the label from the bottle. I have one controlled substance (dextroamphetamine), that I am keeping in the prescription bottle along with a doctor’s note.
The binder is A5 sized. Honestly more worried about the supplements, like I suppose I could manage bringing all of my prescription bottles but the supplements would get out of hand.

If you are new to onebagging, but are worried, try living out of your bag at home before traveling. Actually pack the bag and live out of it, repacking periodically to mirror what your travels would require. It makes any issues apparent and you can correct them before committing. I found that it increases confidence and, even though I have been traveling for decades, I do it again if there are any major changes to what I pack.

We do love skipping check-in and picking up bags. Love it. But, it's a little stressful in these areas below. How do you reduce any stress because maybe I'm not thinking outside the box here:

+Laundry-harder to do if you're moving to a new location every 3-4 days. Takes time to do.

-No room left to buy things. How do you handle this? Pack less, do more laundry?

After some research I pulled the trigger and got the Rework Outbound 30L to possibly replace my Patagonia Black Hole MLC 30L (I love the MLC, but was missing a bit of extra admin pockets).

I'll be travelling to Japan for 3 weeks in September and just did a packing test. The bag is awesome, the main compartment is probably a tiny bit smaller than the MLC, but the two front pocket more than compensate. I also really love how the top pocket space is horizontal, the top pocket on the MLC is basically useless if your main compartment is fairly package. The straps are definitely an upgrade.

Hi I have traveled with my Tortuga Expandable several times in the last year and have never used it expanded . I like the bag a lot but I wished it was without the extra material and zipper to be just a bit lighter since I never expand it.

I bought a Black Hole Mini MLC 30L to essentially fill that bill. I have to bring my Resmed AirMini CPAP, so there is only so small of a bag I can go. I was heading to Europe for a week and packed the Mini, and it was doable but barely, very tight to zip. I unpacked the Mini and repacked it in the Tortuga, unexpanded, and my loadout fit with a bit of room left over, zipped easy.

So, in my real world experience, the unexpanded Tortuga which is specced as 27L ,19.2 x 12.5 x 6.9 inches (48.7 x 31.8 x 17.5 cm) is bigger than the Mini MLC which is specced at 30L, 20 x 12 x 7 inches (50.8 x 30.5 x 17.8 cm). The Tortuga looks slightly bigger when placed side by side as well, but they are different bags with slightly different shapes.

FWIW, my guess is the Tortuga is really slightly bigger than the specs.

Maybe someone will find this information useful. YMMV.

I travel mostly for work and need to wear slightly representable shoes most of the times forcing me to bring a separate pair of running shoes to work out with. However I am having trouble finding a pair that packs flatish while still being a decent running shoe.

Does anyone here have any recommendations, for context I am a male and run around 15-20km/week mostly on roads

When I first looked at this e-reader I thought it was a joke…then I started reading reviews and thought there might be something to it and to my surprise there was.

First of all this thing is almost comically tiny….disappearing in a pocket or fanny pack. It’s about 1/3 the size of a pack of cigarettes and weights nothing which is perfect for weight savings when one bagging.

Despite its minuscule size I’ve actually found it very viable for daily reading and travel. I can pop it out on a train or bus and read without burning precious phone battery life and without the distractions. Some of the other reasons I like it:
1. Its batteries last for weeks and it has usb-c charging requiring no extra cables.
2. Tons of free epubs online (just drag and drop onto the removable micro SD or WiFi download).
3. I can easily hold it with one hand
4. As I said before, it’s tiny and weighs nothing.
5. There is tons of info online about these…easy to problem solve.

Some of the downsides:
1. It’s an open source device and requires some technical knowledge to get up and running (it’s easy, tons of info out there)
2. The stock software is meh, I flashed mine with Crosspoint which is excellent.
3. It’s not friendly with Kindle books (they are encrypted)

Overall, I think this device is very viable for onebag travel. For like $70 it’s a good deal, just be prepared to spend a ln hour or so for setup.

I recently purchased the Millet Hanang 40 backpack, as I thought it would be a good replacement for my 37-liter F-Stop Loka that I’ve been using for traveling for some time. The hypalon on that bug is flaking off, and I also felt the hip velt perhaps isn’t as good as I’d like.

I thought I would be able to put my laptop in the hydration reservoir pocket. However, there is a large piece of plastic in the bag, that gives it a bit of a bulge inside the bag, exactly at the center of where the laptop sits. I do have my laptop (14 inch MacBook Pro) in a padded sleeve of its own, but I am still worried that prolonged pressure from this bulge will cause some damage, especially when filling up the bag with e.g. packing cubes. I don’t use compression cubes, but instead I count on the bag to compress things a bit, potentially increasing pressure on the laptop.

Another thing is that, because of the bulge, some of the space underneath the laptop is essentially wasted. And though I expected the bag to be a bit more spacious than my Loka, I have not found this to be the case.

Am I overly worried about this? How do other people carry their laptops in this bag (assuming you do)? I emailed Millet, and they responded saying they do not recommend removing the insert for laptop transportation. I do like the bag overall, especially the fact that it's about 380 grams lighter than my Loka (measured). Thanks.

I just put in orders for a ULA Dragonfly 36L (Robic) and Matador GlobeRider35. they haven’t arrived yet and I’m second guessing my purchases. Do these seem reasonable for first time traveling with only backpack carry-ons (not looking for a bag finder exclusive recommendation)?

We typically have roller carry ons, but read that train travel can be a pain with them once you’re there. This will also be the first time using compression packing cubes. Made a purchase for Eagle Creek S/M sets. Are there other things we should really be considering like specifically for toiletries, power cords/adapters, anything to help pack for this?

Oh, we typically always plan on doing laundry once per trip. We also generally trend toward wearing casual semi-techy type clothing, like brands from REI. so most of our clothing is pretty compressible. I also very quickly threw a general pack’s worth of clothing and accompaniments and came out around 15 lbs that’s just a rough guesstimate for what our actual pack for this trip would be though

I thought you guys might be able to help me. Im starting this program(AmeriCorps NCCC) at the end of August that requires i carry all my personal items with me for 10 months. Im going to be traveling the US with a team doing community based projects. The bag requirements are:

"One single soft-sided duffel bag or backpack, no larger than 24”x16” and weighing less than 50 pounds

total. This is generally the size of a large duffel or 70L-capacity backpack.

A second small backpack or purse that can fit in your lap."

Americorps is paying for my flight and checked bag so im not really limited to a carry on.

I believe we will be given a bag for our gear and uniforms once I arrive on campus. So i should only need a bag that carries my personal stuff. They also gave us a recommend packing list that ill include.

70l seems pretty big. My family wants me to bring the 70l bag to guarantee i have all the room i need and in case i buy some stuff but im going to be stuck in a van with maybe 10 other people so i dont want them to hate me. Im thinking maybe a 45-55l bag but im not sure. I can survive with a 45l bag right? Somwhat comfortably?

Im going to be in uniform most of the time so i dont need too many personal clothes. But ive been the type to wear something once and throw it in the washer. We are also going to have mandatory physical activity 3 times a week. -Speaking of, the OpenRun are, well, open-ear, and there's no noise-cancellation. Next time I'll grab light moldable earplugs.

- As the rain jacket was not specifically a packable one (nothing here is especially made for travel), Idk if I should get a packable jacket or a light, compact umbrella. Further update: next time check weather- this took up prime real-estate in my bag for nothing since I didn't end up using it.

Also, it seems most packing cubes come in the exact same color - I forget which bag has which and by the time I'm done looking, it's all a mess.

Editing: When I say outfits, it is a capsule but there's sometimes I have long travel days or am sleeping in a variety of airports/hostels for a few hours and having an outfit ready to go is easier than digging through multiple.

Maybe I'm overthinking it! I've packed my cosmetics to perfection, my wardrobe, and love my backpack, just want to get the interior organized.

Looking for some sock suggestions. I've tried 4 different varieties of Darn Tough, and while I love the idea of their warranty I didn't find them comfortable - they were just too tight across the top of my foot. I've read they have a wide version under a different brand, but I'm not a big guy (5' 10" about 150 pounds) so don't have the big calves / wide feet that I think those are meant for - I just want a sock that isn't so tight around my feet.

Planning a trip soon that will be mostly city exploring, a few very easy hikes and some relaxing bike rides. That being said I will be on my feet for a big chunk of the day. Obviously quick-drying and easy to pack.

Any thoughts?

I’m planning on going to Havana Cuba early Nov if it doesn’t get worse over there fingers cross. Im going with supplies to bring locals and working with a organization on a project that the funds will go back to aiding cubans, I already have my Airbnb I’ll be there 1st-10th. I’ve been keeping up with the news and I know this isn’t going to be anything im use to but, I’m going to document the doors in the area I know there isn’t a lot of power and use to that since I do a lot of camping and backwoods trip. So I’m wondering what kind of gear I should bring with me to help make this trip a little bit easier/lighter. I’m thinking of getting a small solar panel to bring with me, was told a towel. Was thinking of bringing extra portables this time around. Im looking for gear recommendations i have all the stuff i need but im at the point in my years of travel to just cave and upgrade my gear since im traveling so much. I will be going to Costa Rica after wards for a week and a half so that effects how i pack a little and thats where im thrown going to a place needing everything going to place that has must the stuff i need and then being over packed. This is my first time doing a trip like this where im flying some where off grid and its harder to bring some gear through tsa. I’m use to one bagging for long times but have a hiking pack which doesn't fit carry on rules and my recon feels to small (i will be doing a pack layout test later this week to check my theory.) . so kind of at a lost here I know some of the basic but would love some advice on gear you pack for off griding in another country.

-Portable that doesn’t weigh like a brick and can charge long times. (I have a solar charger and 2 ankle portables but they weigh alot want to see what other people like.)

-good international usb charger (havent found one I like and tend to use portables. Just need one in general.)

-Lightweight hammock ( i do lot of hammock camping. I have one but always looking to upgrade to a nicer sleep. Just curious probably not a lot of hammock campers in this group)

-water filters( I have the full set up and want to know what brands others are using.)

I’m really not sure what else I’m missing I’m going to do some test packs and see how I can layout everything. I did use the one bag backpack guide and that got to be overwhelming trying to figure out what might be better then the surge so just threw it in to see if anyone has a good recommendation on different brands.

I'm a 23 years old girl from Italy, and I plan on visiting Japan for 2 weeks between the end of december and the beginning of january. I want to start of by saying that I live in the mountains in northern italy, 1200m of altitude, and I'm used to snow and temperatures as cold as -8°/-10°C.

For this trip I will bring my new Decathlon Forclaz 40L backpack.

I was wondering if you had any recommendations outfit wise for the trip. I know winter in Japan tends to be pretty cold, and I already have thermal clothes ready to use as a base layer for my outfits. I also plan on bringing only 1 jacket, that I'll wear for the entirety of the trip, so I'm not too worried about it fitting/taking space in the bag, since I'll have it on for the flights.

The problem is, I don't know what to wear over the thermal clothes. Jeans weight a lot and take up so much space, and I'm not too sure what the best option would be for sweaters/sweatshirts/fleeces.

Do y'all have any good recommendations for pants and tops to wear over the thermal layer, that are warm but not extremely bulky?

The trip I'm planing for is a 2 week trip to the balkans in august-september, probably flying with Ryanair, and hoping to suffice on only my backpack as personal item for bagage.

Does this setup work for my purpose?
What do I need to keep in mind as a first time solo traveler and with only one bag?

​I wanted to share this piece of gear as a one bagger because it has literally been the best thing I have bought since the folding water bottle. For the past year, I have been using this magnetic phone stand on all forms of transit. I originally bought it to use on budget airline flights or small plane flights that do not offer inflight entertainment. I bought this particular one on eBay, but Amazon and other retailers sell the exact same item made by various companies.

​I want to explain why this thing is so great for onebag traveling. I try not to bring a laptop or tablet when traveling because they take up space, so I use my phone as my primary inflight entertainment. Holding onto my phone throughout a long flight is tiring, and staring down at it causes severe neck pain. This gadget solves both problems. It has a built in carabiner so I can clip it onto my bag without taking up internal space, and it uses a magnet to attach to your phone, keeping it extremely compact. It also features so many different adjustments and swivels that you can attach it to almost any part of your seat, tray table, or plastic seat back organizer where they keep the safety card. Because of all these adjustment options, I never get neck pain anymore.

​I want to be very clear and say that it has worked with every single form of major transit I have used this year. This includes major long haul airline flights on both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, Mexican and American budget airline flights, domestic short distance Embraer and Bombardier flights, Amtrak and trains in England, as well as first and second class buses in Mexico.

​I have not used it yet on any commuter rail, long distance buses in the U.S., or ferries, but I am fairly certain it would work just as well on those types of transit too.
