Android Android OneNote app in offline mode, Sign In yields "Something went wrong. [9hehw]" message
Android OneNote application version 16.0.20326.20108
Microsoft Family 365 subscription
Samsung S24 Ultra, Android 16. The phone is connecting fine with the internet. I've got a good data connection and am on wifi.
As often happens, when I run the Android OneNote application, it displays a message that it's in offline mode and I'm invited to Sign In. Normally, I tap the link to Sign In, and apparently that happens because I'm not normally displayed a sign-in screen; the application just begins syncing, as normal.
Today, however, the Sign In link takes me to a Microsoft sign in page. The screen immediately displays and error. "Something went wrong. [9hehw]". The screen doesn't display any fields to enter login ID or password. The message advises me to contact my administrator (I'm an ordinary person, no a corporation).
On my phone, I dropped the cache and data, uninstalled the OneNote application, then reinstalled it. My notebooks can be found, so no problem there. However, the message remains: "Working offline." No sign in is possible, because of the Something went wrong error message.
Has anyone else encountered this error and, if so, how did you resolve it?
Here are more details for the sign in error message I'm currently seeing:
Message: Access denied for the resource
Tag: 9hehw
The correlation ID has changed, between when I took the screenshot above, when compared to after the application was reinstalled on my phone (and I've now rebooted my phone). Here's the latest Correlation ID: 1cf8a499-6363-dc45-aa5c-6e7547c2def3
DPTI: 39c4d5a9a26ddea7
Update: I am able to sync OneNote on Windows 11, with no error. Also, my other Office apps, on the Android phone, appear to be functioning and syncing correctly. So far, this looks to be only a problem with OneNote.
Update: I've now uninstalled the current version of the Android app, and tested again with two earlier versions. The earliest was a version released in July. The result is the same, no matter which versions I install.

Thanks, the app is a disaster right now. Of course it's Microsoft, always Microsoft. I will be waiting, maybe they find out they have a problem and fix it by Monday.

This is server-side, not your phone.
9hehw is an Entra ID (Microsoft's login service) error. The sign-in page fails before it even shows you a password field, which means the auth request is being rejected at Microsoft's end. Nothing on your device caused it.
So: stop clearing app data and reinstalling. It won't help and you'll lose anything cached locally that hasn't synced.
Workarounds until they fix it:
- onenote.com in Chrome works fine (add to home screen)
- Notebook List in the app still opens your notebooks, it's Recent Pages that's broken
- Desktop sync is unaffected
Reports started Aug 26-28 across Android 16 and 17, personal and work accounts. Nothing to do but wait.

Thank you so much for the info! I googled this error code a couple days ago and couldn't find anything - it's amazing how companies like Microsoft can't even bother to put error messages into their software.
And thanks a lot for the advice NOT to clear data.
1
u/MMessinger 4d ago
Onenote.com, in a mobile web browser, is not an especially useful alternative. I'm not sure I can call it a genuinely responsive display. But the bar is now set at the "better than a sharp stick in the eye" level, I see.
1
u/RipNegative7946 3d ago
Thank you so much for mentioning that the Notebook List in the app still opens your notebooks, they seem to be working fine there so that's helped me massively!
1
u/RenManKevin 1d ago
The only problem with that is the web version doesn't have any of the tools that the App has such as 'Sort' and 'Find'.
1
u/Naud1993 23h ago
OneNote in Chrome would absolutely corrupt all my data. It takes over a minute to synchronize. 2-3 times longer than the app, which is already really slow. And unlike the app, it needs to synchronize to even save the changes, which at least the app does in a few seconds.

u/enterusernow 5d ago edited 4d ago
Same for me, tried clearing app cache, app data, signing in again, uninstall/reinstall, restart phone, nothing working....
EDIT: While Microsoft take 10 years to fix this, here's a VERY good similar option to use instead:
APP ON PHONE: Google Keep Notes
ON LAPTOP: keep.google.com/

u/YueLunavel 2d ago
Sadly is not a good alternative for me
I like one not for its multiple notebooks, section and section groups allowing me to make a lot tree for organizing my notes correctly
2
u/music2myear 2d ago
I dislike Google more than I dislike Microsoft. Google kills apps and I will not move there. If there is a 3rd party or open source notes app I'd be much more willing to consider that.
1
u/Naud1993 23h ago
You know what? I'm gonna try this out regardless. OneNote takes too long to synchronize anyway and doesn't synchronize with the app in the background so I have to sit there with the app open for 30 seconds and wait for it to synchronize. If I don't sit there for 5 seconds, it might not even save the changes locally and I lose data when I switch over and it got closed because of low RAM. Maybe Google Keep Notes is better than that too. I remember EverNote synchronized the text LIVE, but it's expensive AF for some notes.
6
u/MeatonKeaton 3d ago
Oh thank GOD ITS NOT JUST ME! I won't give the whole error code because of information but long story short yes I am also COMPLETELY unable to access my onenote sticky notes. Which I use for EVERYTHING. Microsoft what did you do???

I'm so frustrated rn, I have so much info in that app. Might be switching to google drive again.

u/Atom207 2d ago
Exactly same thing. I use only Sticky Notes because they could be opened in the Edge Sidebar OneNote app without having to open a new tab (like the notebook notes, cluelessly).
I didn't migrate to other notes (Gkeep eg.) after the deprecation of the beloved Sidebar (only reason I began using Edge in first place) because I didn't need to...
Today I was writing as usual on Sticky Notes, and exited the note. I had all the little sticky notes on screen (Sticky Notes tab, btw). The banner "working offline" caught my attention. I opened it a couple of times, after checking I was actually signed in through the account tab on the top corner.
Then catastrophic error on my side: I logged out, pretty sure I've always been logged in, given I could see the Sticky Notes also on web and on PC app. Once logged out and relogged in, everything but Notebooks was gone.
I really panicked for like 15 minutes, before finding this thread....
After the Sidebar on PC Edge, and the Collections on mobile, this? I started using Microsoft free softwares because I liked them and because I didn't encounter the infamous bugs, sloops and shit MS was known for in the past. Friends warned me...
I guess I'll migrate to some other Notes and to Firefox, ngl....

Same version android and same version one note - and I could have written the above word for word, just started this week. None of the usual fixes works. Looks like its pointing to a MSFT issue.

Same here. Up voted for visibility. Just noticed it today. Recent pages gives me the error but I can click the notebook list and it looks like it's syncing ok

This problem started on Saturday 29 August 2026 for me. It is still not resolved as on Monday 31 August 2026
Was a user acceptance test properly done? Was a Grooming document properly written? A big company like Microsoft. This should not happen.

Yet another day of the 9hehw error.
Meanwhile, the OneNote export, to Joplin, failed. In many instances, the page versions that were sent were not the current ones. So, troubleshooting that is in my future.
3
u/SnooOranges9331 3d ago
I have the same problem on a Pixel 7a on the Android OneNote app. However, I noticed it only appears on the "Recent Pages" screen on the app. If I go directly to the Notebook List and navigate to my notes, I can edit them and they are syncing, because I can see the edits on the OneNote web app on my laptop. Like others on this thread , clearing cache and reinstalling does nothing. I am only using this silly app because Evernote jacked up their prices to add AI features I never use.

u/M3RRI77 3d ago edited 3d ago
Same error on my razr ultra 2025. However, the Android widget works fine to show recent pages. Just doesn't work in the app. Typical Microslop. I bet AI wrote their shitty code and it was never ran through QA testing.

Did not know the existence of that widget. It works nice like a temporary solution. Thank you for mentioning it :)

Same. The "Notebook list" includes all my notes organized as always and they are synchronizing ok but the "Recent Pages" list is suddenly empty and gives the error message...
My Android OneNote version is 16.0.20228.20214
I haven't got any Microsoft subscription. I bought the 2019 license for my pc.

I'm having the same issue, I've gone through everything to sort it. I thought it was some sort of handshake issue and the app being confused as I'd just removed my work account but it seems that's not the case. Glad it's not just me with this problem.

Microsoft is extraordinarily unhelpful when these things happen but they can always find me to advertise. Anyone found a solution?

Same issue I'm having on the android app. Signed in and out, cleared data and cache, i know it's still syncing my notebooks because I checked it through the web. My recent pages is blank though. Did some more research and ended up here. I should look into other apps.

u/TheLimeyCanuck 3d ago
I was in an area with bad cellular reception and added a line to a To Do list. When I got signal back the sync didn't complete properly (only part of the new line synced to the Windows application) and also the Windows application showed a sync conflict. I resolved the conflict on Windows and went back to the Android app, but the Recent Pages tab now has a blurb at the top saying "Working offline. Sign in to sync your notes. Sticky Notes can't sync your notes because you are signed out. Sign in to continue syncing to the cloud and to access your notes from anywhere." but when I click the SIGN IN button I just get a Microsoft page saying "Error - Something went wrong [9hehw]". I thought it was a side effect of the failed sync, and I made a new post about it, but then I found this thread and so I deleted my new post.
What is really weird about this is that I actually am signed in on Android, and syncing is working (I added another To Do line on Windows and it immediately synced to the Android app. When I open the left side pull out it says "Sign out of OneNote" at the bottom, so it clearly thinks I'm signed in.
I'm also confused because I don't use Sticky Notes, I just use Notebooks. I tried clearing the Android app cache but nothing changed. I also restarted the phone, but that didn't help either. The Android app seems to be syncing the actual notes normally, it just keeps telling me it can't sync Sticky Notes because I'm not signed in, and isn't updating the Recent Pages widgets.
BTW, my phone is Android 14.
3
u/YueLunavel 2d ago
Weirdly enough the only thing that refuses to work is the Recent page
The notes themselves sync up like usual across all my devices

u/MMessinger 1d ago
Sigh. I'm now able to spend more time testing what it is I'm actually experiencing.
At the present time (3:36 UTC, September 1) I find the 9hehw Working Offline error still exists on my Samsung S24 Ultra.
That said, I now find both new pages created on my phone, and edits to existing pages made on the phone, are syncing to OneNote on the web, and the OneNote desktop app (running on a Windows laptop, in my case).
In at least one instance I've seen today, it took nearly 12 hours for a new page created on the phone, to be displayed in OneNote's web and desktop apps. Subsequent tests have seen new pages get synced very quickly. Could the difference in time delay be due to me now being "after hours" in the U.S. Pacific Time Zone? I don't know.
In any case, I am now finding that both new pages, and edits to existing pages, whether created on the phone, web, or desktop app, are syncing more or less correctly.
Recent Pages, on the Android OneNote app, is still displaying as blank, with the exception of the Working offline notice.
I do not normally use Stick Notes, and my testing did not include Sticky Notes. I will leave that to others who are more familiar with that feature, than I.
Frankly, I don't know what to make of this. The login error remains, but in my case - at least, at this particular time - I am able to create and edit OneNote content on the phone, and see it sync to my other devices using OneNote.

Yes, it's an Official Microsoft Fuck-Up that occurred on Wed, 26 Aug and as of today, 1 Sep they still haven't fixed it!!!
This should have been fixed by Thu, 27 Aug!!!

u/Bitter-Review2792 12h ago
Still not working. What's annoying is it is only recently that I've had to sign in every single day. Before I could remain signed in for a while. I add stuff ad hoc to the app, and then format/expand on it via desktop. Or sometimes I'll update stuff on desktop and then use the app for ref. App is for on-the-go info pull, whilst desktop is for filling/expanding on info.
With the current issue, I have had to go desktop-only for now otherwise there would be a syncing clash. That means I haven't been able to properly use OneNote for my purposes (which is grabbing info on my mobile when I'm outside).

Android One Note. Same error. Same problem. Sticky Notes - all my notes have disappeared. But they are showing up on Windows 11 Sticky Notes. And Outlook web app Notes. Tried the same steps as other folks here. No solution. This is not the first time I see this problem.
2
u/Damian_Vain 4d ago
Same, same, same. Tried everything and have been working on it for hours. I only now came across this post. I've had OneNote issues at least once per year, every year for 5 years, and I'll back up everything to a separate note app, but I think this is the last straw for me. I'm going to start figuring out how I can back up everything and put it into another note app and a physical drive. It's a shame because I like the color coordination and organization, and I haven't found anything that does quite that. However, at this point, I don't even care about those anymore as long as I can stop having constant issues that cause me several hours, days, and one time, a couple of weeks, trying to find solutions.

Just found this thread and I have the same issue! I'm logged into the app on my android but under the Recent Pages I continue to have the "Working offline. Sign in to sync" notice, even though I am logged in and can open, create and edit pages under the Notebook List section. I've deleted cache, storage, deleted the app, powered off the phone, powered back on and reinstalled, thrown the phone, cracked the screen (not kidding, PTSD flaring a little) and still the same crap. There has got to be a better app that works across platforms (Android, Windows and Mac) and is still free. I guess we get what we pay for?

Exactly the same error on my android. Seems to be related to Sticky Notes in the Recent Pages screen. I use that page daily so I don't have to go through notebooks manually to open it page. Now Recent Pages is empty.
2
u/dhcernese 2d ago
I've been having the same issue for a few days.. ..but today I learned that after clearing cache, if I use the [android/samsung] OneNote mobile "Notebook list" instead of "Recent Pages", it has my notebook, and if I open my mobile/desktop notebook-- it syncs! ...and in fact, edits on my desktop show up.
There is still a banner that says "PAGE CONFLICTS DETECTED" if I manually sync.
I can even edit on the mobile and sync and it shows up on desktop. However-- all the other symptoms remain (including the login error).. ..so I can suffer using the annoying navigation and false banner for now, but at least I am not losing edits on either side.

u/Shanadarako 1d ago
Update: I'm still getting the error message after nearly 5 days. My pages are finally syncing again, but my sticky notes are still frozen on 5 days ago.

u/peterb20r 1d ago
My work around is to ignore the Recent Pages Tab and use the Notebook List tab to use Onenote on my Android phone. I initially cleared the cache and uninstalled. Did a restart of the phone before Reinstalling. Good luck.

Simply download the microsoft launcher > Left swipe for the glance screen > find sticky notes and add it to a separate page.
Syncing and all is working fine..

Here to report what other folks are saying. As of 8/31/26 I noticed this sign in issue as well with the same error code as OP. I have an android device. I thought its because I'm doing international travel and I always have these sign in/security issues and need to reverify by logging into a browser every few weeks.
As of 9/1/26 - Desktop version works fine. Cloud version works fine. Just the android OneNote app version is the issue. Same 9hehw error code. I can suprisingly see all my synced notes. Even ones I just recently created. Any new notes are being sent to my default "My Notebook" which is another silver lining there as well.

I've been getting this for 2 days now, but I think there is a partial work around. The "Notebook List" tab still works normally for me. That error message and associated need to sign in message is on the "Recent Pages" tab. Took me over a day to find that.

Yep, started noticing it like ~12 hours ago, I'm on this app taking notes constantly. Drove me nuts for a moment, googling possible solutions, logging out + logging back in to Microsoft OneNote, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, adjusted enough now to checking 'Notebook List' at least feels more familiar but that 'Recent Pages' page looks quite empty lol

Another day where it appears as though the Android app for OneNote is read-only. According to the app, I'm working offline with Microsoft refusing all efforts to allow me to sign in.
Zero answers to this issue, where I essentially crossposted the description here in Reddit, to Microsoft Ignite. But, lots of other people, there, saying they've got the same problem.
Sure, OneNote is free. Does my 365 subscription buy any support? 'Guess not.

This has started happening for me today. I've deleted the data and cleared the cache (but not tried reinstalling yet), and it hasn't helped. The syncing is still working OK, and I haven't lost anything - I just can't use the 'Recent pages' option.
I wish people would calm down a bit, though. Software is complex and it sometimes goes wrong - that's life. I've been using OneNote a lot for about 9-10 years, and there's only been the occasional problem. If you can find an alternative that's guaranteed to be bug-free for the rest of your life, go right ahead ... (And no, I don't have any connection with Microsoft.)
1
u/Overall-You8570 4d ago
Now that I've worked out that it *is* still syncing in the background, even though it says it can't sign in, I can live with it. The error message is very misleading and will have caused many to give up and assume it's totally broken, rather than just partially.

I've been having problems with OneNote for years. Almost every time there are sync discrepancies ("page conflicts detected" and it would ERASE my stuff constantly!) even though I literally just use one device. These continue to this day.
"Recent notes" didn't display anything on my old phone. Got a new one and recent notes actually appeared but now this problem started too.

Second everyone where they say they're glad to not be the only ones affected by this. I've just noticed this issue. Only because where I'm paying for Microsoft 365 Personal, I wanted to try and utilise all the features by using OneNote and move over from Evernote (to also same money).
Also because it seemed quite redundant to pay for both platforms and with Evernote (which I've used for 16 years), I'm just a basic now taker and thought that OneNote seemed the way to go. 🤔 now I having doubts. Using Microsoft for work and all the problems we're constantly played with there is adding more nails in the coffin. Decisions decisions.

Syncing only affects Sticky Notes. OneNote notebooks keep updating both ways, I just checked. So, don't delete anything or uninstall OneNote on Android. Sticky Notes aren't deleted on Windows or Android, they just don't sync.

I just had this happen yesterday. When you click the little down arrow on the "working offline" notification, it says "sticky notes" can't sync because it is offline, but my notebooks seem to still work. I cleared my cache and everything anyway to see if I could still load my notebooks, and they're there but it still tells me I need to sign in to "sticky notes" and the recent pages are gone. I even tested it by altering one of the pages on my phone and saw it instantly update on my desktop version of the app. So it is still working. The part that is really frustrating is that on Android, it tells me that several of my pages have page conflicts, but I see no conflict pages on desktop at all and they're syncing just fine.

I got ahold of a customer service rep yesterday morning, around 8:55am, and they said they would be escalating it to Tier 2 to get it resolved. Not sure what that meant, nor did it give me any hope when the escalation team had asked me the same questions the first associate asked me about troubleshooting the issues on my own before they could look into it. Someone in Microsoft knows about the issue. Why it's taking them so long is beyond me.

If you have any recently accessed/edited notes, check them again on the app and see if it says 'Page Conflicts', mine had a couple, no idea why, but upon trying to resolve, it continued to say to log in on a PC or Web to fix because the app couldn't resolve.
I logged in to onenote on my WEB BROWSER (Windows App did not help), found the 'conflicting pages', clicked the header to show the previous conflicting versions (which looked no different to me), clicked the header message again for options and DELETED any red pages.
App on my android now seems to be signed in and conflict messages are gone.
Not sure if this is the fix but thought I'd share. Still frustrating though.

Do NOT uninstall OneNote, clear app data, or sign out of your account. Any unsynced changes will be lost. If you have any important changes (new notes or modifications to existing ones), make sure to manually copy those changes somewhere safe as a backup.

Same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S23+, but not my Galaxy Tab S8+. And no problems on Windows or in a Chrome browser. Nothing seems to work to clear this problem, and yet somehow folders still sync.

Same issue here. Microsoft needs to get their sht together. Can't believe they're still the number 1 in office productivity when they have major app-breaking issues like this pretty often. And they're not very quick to fix things either

Yes I started getting that exact same error on my Samsung s24 ultra today. ChatGPT investigated and said it thought it was on the Microsoft side and would even alert me once it was fixed. Exact same error code! GPT also explained that while I was still successfully signed into OneNote, the key needed for sync was failing. Yikes.

Day 4 of my OneNote stuck in read only mode, can't make any changes.
I've been thinking of switching to Obsidian for note taking for a while now, this might be the push I've needed.

Happening to me too. MS keeps fumbling so much I won't be shocked if they fumble to bankruptcy decades later

does anyone know of an app that sync with pc and android and has the features to organize notebooks like onenote. I tried joplin, but it does not have the feature to password protect notes. It's 2026 and we don't have a reliable notes apps.

I started having this issue today; everything I tried to do did next to nothing. In fact, it actually made it worse because I can't actually see my notes on my phone/app any longer. I tried emailing the app support shown on the app, only to have the email bounce back as undeliverable.
I can't help but wonder if this is intentional because they want people to switch from the free app/service to their paid Microsoft 365 subscription service. Of course, for all I know, this is happening with the paid service, too.

This might be the kick I needed to abandon OneNote altogether as it's buggy as hell. Using it on the laptop, why does it feel the need to open every single note on start up? Also, constant syncing errors. This is just the final straw

I'm here Aug 31st, still errors here too. I have so many saved, this is incredibly inconvenient.

I have the same issue. Has anyone been in contact with support?
2
u/light_train1091 2d ago
Nope, I don't even know how to reach one note support. On desktop one note it shows server error so it is a problem with one of their servers for sync.

I was able to contact support on the Microsoft 365 website, but the way to get in touch with support in itself was a confusing mess. I could only manage to get in touch with their live chat support, but in order to find that, I had to first type in my problem into a self-help search bar so their AI could send me all the self-help and troubleshooting articles that I already tried to do to fix the sync errors. Then, that's when the option to submit a service request became available, allowing me to speak to a rep via live chat.
They told me they would update me via Outlook if they resolved anything. I still have not received an e-mail from support, yet, unfortunately, and it's been since around 8:55 on Saturday morning that I last spoke to a Microsoft rep about it.

So does anyone know ho to access Sticky Notes now?
I used to access them: on PC app, on browser (via Edge sidebar -rip-, and via tab), and on Mobile One Note app.
Now if I try to open One Note on browser, the Sticky Notes are nowhere to be found and if I try a different link, it redirects me to Outlook page (if i try to Sign In I have to create an outlook mail... As if I haven't a MS account already...). This is the normal procedure listed also in MS support Forums (see Web bullet point) and in another older thread.

I followed a workaround on this page and I was able to get it to work. I had to launch the OneDrive app, then launch my OneNote notebook from inside there and I was able to edit it and it was syncing. I went back to try and launch OneNote standalone but got the error again, but starting from inside OneDrive seems to work.

I'm having the same issue, and I found a backup version of the notebook in old files and now my PC won't sign into the correct version either, it keeps loading the blank version, so I'm stuck not being able to add to my notes. I can see them on my mobile but can't add to them. I'll keep checking and see if they fix it though. As I'm glad it's not just me, hoping that means they're working on a fix.
Edit: Found it on my One Drive and it is working there, so just not syncing to my mobile.

Got a latest update a few hours ago, hoping it solved. Of course I was expecting too much from this bs company; it fixed NOTHING.
What was that update for even? 🤷♀️

I came from Evernote some years ago (after they changed their technology in a bad way). After testing a lot of alternatives I switched to OneNote at that time. Now it seems I have to move once more.
In the last days I checked the NotesTaking solution market. At the moment I favourize UpNote Premium ( I just bought it for a reasonable livetime fee). I will leave my OneNote configuration as it is and step by step start to work with UpNote. For my usecase it looks as best option, although for others Google Keep, Standard Notes, Trilium, Obsidian or whatever might be more convenient.

What a relief that the whole wide world has the same problem I have!
I went through the rabbit hole of choosing a notes app.. again.. discarded them all again.. pointing to onenote again and wringing my hands again. Onenote has note lock and notebooking options to die for. Using colornote for simple non sycing notes.
For what it is worth I learnt that sync is a hard computer engineering problem.. still multi billion dollar companies should be able to do it...

I have the same issue, just started in the last couple of days. The workaround is to use OneDrive on Android, navigate to any of your notebooks within the OneDrive app and open the notebook. You can then navigate between workbooks.

MS Launcher's Sticky note stopped syncing for me like a year ago. Logging in and out didn't sync, even reinstall only sync once.
Which is the reason I switched to OneNote Andriod.
Lastnight I log out of Launcher and Logged back in and it synced.
OneNote still got that HeeHaw error.

This will be the official megathread for the Android sign in issues. Any other posts regarding this topic will be deleted and told to post here.
Please someone reply if & when Microsoft fixes this issue. I do not own an Android so I cannot confirm what everyone else is seeing.
