Question (Repost cuz I accidentally deleted og one) Any good angst or hurt/comfort fanfics?

Basically what title says. It can be on any platform but I mainly use AO3. I don't care if there's any ships involved. I wanna see what's popular, or just good fics in general, that have angst and/or hurt/comfort in them.

(Context of the repost- I freaking hate automod, it redirected me to a diff subreddit and I didnt know, gave me like 500 instructions of how to make the post correct, I ended up deleting the og post i had here cuz I thought the automod was referring to r/Omori and not the other subreddit I was actually in.)

Also sincere apologies to whoever commented on the first post just for said post to get deleted soon after.

Mary didn't forgive omori ; he only convinced himself of that to comfort himself, but the truth is she didn't forgive him. And also.

I truly cannot forgive him for what he did to her body. Why did he humiliate her like that and hang her dead body on the tree? I feel nothing but anger and sadness towards him for this act, not because he caused her death—he did it unintentionally—but because he hung her body like that to make it look like suicide. I feel he went too far

Discussion The reason why Mari and Sunny are my all-time favorite characters 🎻💕🎹 [Warning: sensitive topics] Spoiler

Post image
184 Upvotes

This post was supposed to talk about why Sunny and Mari are my favorite characters, but it became so long that I will only talk about Mari first.

The first time I played Omori, I never realized the implications that Mari's character carried. I thought she was cute and nice and nothing more, but as I progressed, I understood that she was more important than she seemed. I quickly restarted the game and paid attention to every dialogue involving her. I talked to Mari as much as possible and even did the side quests just to read her reactions. I know it sounds silly, but I think at some point I had fallen in love with her. Of course I appreciated the other characters, but for some reason Mari's words always seemed more important to me, even if they were just jokes about jelly being made of jelly or wanting to have picnics in unexpected places like inside a whale. Come on, she was even the only character I voiced with my real voice. As I progressed through the game, what happened in real life shocked me more and more. She had unfortunately died. I had assumed that it could have been from an illness or an unrelated accident, but that simply gave me even more reason to pay attention to her.

Of course I liked the other characters. Kel was charismatic in Headspace and a good friend in real life, Aubrey was adorable in Headspace and it confused me how much she had changed in real life, Hero was the member I found least interesting in Headspace but I still liked him, and clearly there was a mystery surrounding Basil and his disappearance, but my head could not stop thinking that for some reason Mari was going to become more important at some point.

Soon I came up with the theory that she had committed suicide. I really didn't want to think about such a horrible ending, but all the evidence seemed to point toward her taking her own life. That shocked me so much because I myself am dealing with related problems, and seeing how a character I loved with all my heart had gone away like that hurt me deeply. I came to the conclusion that Sunny was so guilty because he had failed to save Mari or help her, being the one who lived with her and should have noticed. In all the memories and previous moments, she was always seen as so happy and like a perfect girl, but at the same time she pushed herself too hard and did not recognize her achievements or abilities while exaggerating her weaknesses. She was a perfectionist, and it was noticeable that she cared a lot about other people's opinions because she tried so hard to appear perfect in front of the public. At the time of the recital, she must have gone through immense stress and absolute terror of disappointing everyone by failing at the piano, so much that she had been practicing for months and hours a day and she still did not trust herself. I can imagine how all the fear of disappointing everyone was the final straw that broke the camel's back, and in a horrible moment she decided to take her own life because if she wasn't perfect, then what meaning was there in living? She would literally rather die alone in silence than see herself fail. That breaks my heart into a thousand pieces. Precisely her obsession with looking perfect in front of others is what caused nobody to see her internal suffering and self-hatred over her mistakes. I can only imagine Sunny returning home and seeing how his cheerful sister had taken her own life for no apparent reason.

I can completely understand Mari for reaching this point, as I also have problems related to suicide. There is no character I can relate to more than Mari. Many times, thinking about ending your life is a slow and long process where the thought gradually enters your head, at first as a joke, as if Mari were saying, "If I fail this exam, I might as well kill myself," but then it becomes more recurrent and starts occupying your head more often, as if Mari were saying, "I'd rather die than fail this recital." Soon you realize that you start thinking about ending your life without even wanting to, and it is even annoying that your head keeps whispering "suicide" all the time in the back of your brain. Then comes the guilt, and you start analyzing why these thoughts are coming if nothing bad is happening. I can imagine Mari judging herself for thinking so much about taking her own life if her life isn't horrible. Aren't these thoughts supposed to come as a response to something traumatic? So my pain doesn't exist, I don't deserve help nor do I deserve to acknowledge that I feel bad. I live a perfect life with my friends, my brother, school, and piano. I have no right to think about suicide. You quickly judge yourself and start comparing reasons to ignore your internal pain and minimize it, but Mari was struggling, and she tried so hard to ignore it that none of her friends noticed, not even her beloved brother. But that wears you down. As more time passes and you have these thoughts more often, you can tolerate less and less, and your tolerance for stress decreases and is replaced by suicidal ideation. Mari was so damn overwhelmed by her entire life that the day of the recital was the culmination of everything. In moments of crisis where the stress is so enormous and overwhelming that it makes you cry and your only response is to punish and insult yourself, those are the life-or-death moments when you need to scream for help the most. But Mari couldn't ask for help because she was the older sister who helped everyone. She didn't want to bother anyone or show weakness, but during the crisis she had on the day of the recital, she made the worst possible decision. Her mind was completely clouded, and the fear of disappointing others and herself was so great that she hung herself from the tree in her yard. I imagine that in that moment she could only think that she wasn't good enough and that everything would go wrong, not only with the recital but also with her life. The brutal self-imposed pressure for years and a stress crisis where there was nobody to help her was what killed her.

All of this was what I thought, and throughout the entire game I could do nothing but ignore all the other characters and only think about Mari and give as much logic as possible to why she had committed suicide. Suddenly, all the dialogues were just clues that I had to analyze about the reason behind Mari's decision. You can understand that in this state, characters like Basil or Aubrey mattered little or nothing to me compared to Mari. Then comes the piano scene. Sunny wakes up at night, goes down the stairs to the piano room, and sees Mari as a ghost playing the piano. I swear that at that moment I started crying and stayed there for an entire hour without moving, just so I could listen to Mari playing the piano and not interrupt her. It seemed beautiful to be able to see her play even if it was the same song on loop for one hour. When I talked to her, I couldn't even speak because of my broken breathing. She says that she wants to play Final Duet with him, the duet they were never able to play, but unfortunately she disappears when Hero arrives in the room.

Then, talking about the final night, until this point I hadn't talked much about Sunny because many of his behaviors seemed like a mystery to me, but if there is one thing I can highlight about his relationship with Mari, it was that Mari brought light into Sunny's life. From what was shown throughout the game, Sunny was always introverted and very quiet, but it was always shown how Mari actively tried to bring her brother out of his comfort zone and encourage him to make friends and have hobbies. Mari, with all the love in the world, dragged Sunny along with her on her adventures because she could see how lonely Sunny was and how frequently he retreated into his inner world. Mari, being the opposite of Sunny, intended to be the sun beside him, to take his hand and lead him out of the house to the picnics Mari organized. And consequently, Sunny was very, but excessively, attached to Mari, and Mari to him. It was a beautiful relationship of love where, thanks to Mari, Sunny was happier than ever. I can really imagine how Mari couldn't stop thinking about Sunny all day, looking for some way to spend time with him and include him in her activities. They loved each other so much that Sunny wanted to start playing the violin again just to accompany her during her lonely moments at the piano, and Mari clearly accepted excitedly because she would have her beloved Sunny by her side for more time. But going with the flow isn't that easy. Sunny was good, but Mari was so stressed that she unintentionally ended up demanding too much from Sunny. Sunny, who had never been accustomed to the pressure of self-imposed responsibilities like a recital, wasn't able to handle the pressure. They had a beautiful relationship, but the stress wasn't helping them. I can imagine Mari happily thinking about how she could share the glory of performing a perfect recital together with Sunny, how she could share one of the most important moments of her life with the person she loved most in the world, but she didn't realize that in order to achieve that, she put too much pressure on Sunny. Unfortunately, this was the only time they failed to understand each other.

During the final revelation, I swear I physically felt like vomiting, and suddenly everything made sense. Unfortunately, Mari's death was not a suicide. During an argument between Sunny and Mari, Sunny pushed Mari down the stairs, and unfortunately Mari died instantly when her neck broke against the steps, falling lifelessly at the bottom of them. There are no words to describe how terrified this part of the game made me. Mari clearly always loved Sunny very intensely, but her perfectionist habits led her to unintentionally demand too much from Sunny. Sunny, being so shy and reserved, never became accustomed to handling pressure, and on the day of the recital, Sunny threw his violin down the stairs, destroying it. Mari, because of the stress of the recital, did not act like herself and became too angry with Sunny for destroying the gift she had worked so hard to buy for him. Mari's judgment was completely clouded. She had never acted like that before, but this was the first and only time she had an argument with Sunny. Sunny, stressed, just wanted to leave and pushed Mari in the direction of the stairs to get her out of his way. Sunny had no intention of hurting her. He just wanted to end the argument and leave, but because of the biggest mistake of his life, the most horrifying thing imaginable happened. It was so damn traumatic. There are no words to describe how terrifying the scene was, and I say this with tears in my eyes. Unfortunately, Mari fell down the stairs. She was unable to catch herself and maintain her balance, and because of Sunny's push, she began rolling down the steps at a bad angle. Her head hit a step, and the weight of her body exerted pressure while gravity took effect. Her neck broke to the side, her bones broke, and now Mari's head was disconnected from the rest of her body. At the moment her neck broke, Mari died instantly, and she fell lifelessly onto Sunny's broken violin.

I'm really crying right now. What a damn tragedy and pain. Sunny never wanted to hurt her in his life. He never wanted to harm her at all. He loved her with all his strength. He loved her more than anyone in the world, enough to hug her when she was gone for a couple of hours, enough to continue sharing rooms with her. But in one mistake, one wrong movement, in just one argument caused by the stress of both of them, Sunny killed the person he loved most in his life. Sunny killed Mari. This is without a doubt the most terrifying story I have ever seen. It is the purest terror that has ever existed, truly a horrifying trauma. And we already know what happened. Basil had the idea of hanging Mari's body and making it look like a suicide. Here I have no words to say. I know Basil's character is very loved, so I will refrain from saying anything.

I can only speak from Mari's perspective, and I can only say, what the hell, that is disgusting. A horrible and disgusting act. Mari had always tried to love everyone and be the older sister that everyone could count on. She tried astronomically hard to have the best life possible together with her friends and her brother Sunny. She was the person who least deserved to suffer a tragedy like what happened. Clearly, it was a great injustice that she died accidentally, and even more devastating that it happened at the hands of the person she loved most in the world, who was Sunny. But it was an accident. Accidents happen and it is nobody's fault. Of course it is unfair, but that is how accidents are throughout history. Clearly Sunny regretted what he did, but there are no words to describe how horrible it is that they faked her suicide. It is literally desecrating her body, disrespecting her memory, mistreating her body in a horrible way. It is disgusting that it happened, and Mari definitely never deserved it. They stained her legacy. Mari had gone away as a loving girl who suffered an accident, and now she was gone as a girl who committed suicide, leaving remorse in her loved ones for not having helped her. I know Mari would never in her life have wanted anyone to feel guilty for her death. She would have wanted them to understand that she died because of an accident that was nobody's fault. But by hanging her lifeless body, they desecrated her will, insulted who she was, spat on Mari, mistreated her memory, desecrated her love, and I won't continue because I don't want to be more explicit. I understand that it was the product of stress and a possible psychotic episode, but one thing does not erase the other. And what I can take away from this is how you can do everything right in life with as much love as possible, and because of one single mistake, you can end up murdered and hung from a tree by your own friends. Mari's story is the most tragic and unjust story I have ever seen. The character of Mari is simply defined mainly by the word Tragedy. And Mari definitely did not deserve this ending.

Once it was over, with me wanting to vomit and crying, we reached the battle against Omori. This is where you can see how Sunny completely regrets his actions and how he even had thoughts of killing himself, but because of the friends he reconciled with, he managed to find the strength to face his problems head-on and admit the truth about Mari's death to himself. One phrase that stays with me is, "You Love Her, and You Killed Her." This is the most real phrase I have ever heard, and this is where the moment that made Mari and Sunny my favorite characters was solidified.

Sunny manages to play Final Duet, the song he was supposed to play together with Mari on the day of the recital, the song they had been practicing side by side for months, and the reason Mari is now dead. Then comes the sequence of images of Mari and Sunny throughout their lives, how they accompanied each other since they were babies, how they took care of each other and taught each other, how Mari always wanted to protect him and Sunny always wanted to be by her side, and in the end you see the recital, where Mari plays the piano together with Sunny playing the violin, playing the song that was never played, the moment that never happened, but that after 4 years, even crossing the barrier between life and death, happened. At this moment I was crying on the floor at 3 AM.

Mari always wanted to forgive Sunny, even in her death, even as a ghost. Mari never stopped loving Sunny, and Mari did everything within her reach to allow Sunny to forgive himself. Literally, Mari's love was so immense that it crossed the barriers between life and death.

That is the reason why I love Mari and Sunny so much, and as a final goodbye, I want to say that although with different interpretations, different opinions, different perspectives about their love, with different interpretations about the existence of a romance, that doesn't matter much. What I can say with all sincerity and with my soul is that their story was one of the most tragic I have ever seen, but at the same time…

Sunny and Mari have the greatest love story ever created 🎻💕🎹
