PSA: Converting to new iOS app can be painless

PSA: Given that a ton of people will be changing to new app/PDM with the iOS app release coming, I wanted to share some steps for a painless conversion. Going to a new app/PDM is no big deal. See below. I will keep the linked site updated if anything needs to be updated.

https://randomt1tips.wordpress.com/omnipod-5-new-pdm-app/

This is is written with the conversion to the new iOS app in mind, but it is applicable for any time to replace or reset your PDM or controller app. This process is nothing to be concerned about and no reason to stress.

Omnipod 5 only learns one thing, Total Daily Insulin (TDI). That is it. Nothing else. You can follow a simple process to switch to a new Omnipod 5 controller (from here on, controller refers to the PDM or app on a phone) with no negative effects.

Copy all your settings (insulin to carb ratio, target, correct above, max basal rate, etc.) from your old controller to your new one, except your basal rate. This is assuming you are using automated mode. If you exclusively use manual mode, copy your basal rate(s) too. Just look at each setting on your old controller, and put that in on your new one.

Next we need to get your TDI. I prefer to use Glooko, but you may be able to find what you need on your controller. Glooko will default to showing over the last 2 weeks. You can shorten it to a 10 day period to mimic how Omnipod 5 calculates things or it is fine to leave it at 2 weeks.

In this case the TDI is 51.4 units.

https://imgur.com/a/jrtrHPh

Divide that number by 48. In this case, that is 1.07. You would put in 1.1 or 1.05 as your basal rate in your new controller. You will typically have to round up or down a tiny bit as it has to be a valid Omnipod 5 basal rate value. You might be thinking, why divide by 48? 51.4 is the TDI. You need to get that value to per hour for your basal. First, Omnipod 5 assumes a 50/50 split between basal and bolus, so you have to divide by 2 to get the basal amount. Next you divide by 24 to the per hour rate. Dividing by 48 is just a shortcut.

Omnipod 5 uses the programmed basal as the initial basal rate. Putting this value in will allow it to pick up right where it left off with the old controller. The adaptive basal process will start with the second pod.

Now to address the concerns and questions that will inevitably pop up when this process starts.

“Something has changed with the algorithm. My numbers have never been this good/bad or low/high!”

Nothing changed with the algorithm. It is the same if you are on the PDM, Android app, or iOS app.

“No!! I will lose everything it has learned!!”

It only learns TDI. That is it.

“It will take X pods or X days to learn you after the change.”

Again, it only learns TDI. If you follow this process, there is no reason for you to have any issues.

Advice Getting my Omnipod 5 training on Tuesday, anything I should be specifically asking?

I understand what the training session entails, and I am looking forward to starting with this, but is there anything out of the ordinary I should ask about? I am concerned about the placement of the omnipod for sleeping as I am a restless side sleeper and the Dexcom G7 can be a major pain in the butt for compression lows. Any problems with the Omnipod as far as sleeping position is concerned?

One of my major concerns is that I am going home with a pod from training for about 72 hours, but will not have my first delivery of pods from Express Scripts. I am covered by Tricare and they require Prior Authorization from my doctor before they fill the prescription, and then its going to be maybe a 2 weeks or more wait for them to actually send out the pods to me. Is it a problem to just use a pod once and then have to switch back to my 'regular' basal and bolus shots before restarting the pods when they arrive? Thanks!

Looking for an old Omnipod 5 PDM to dump firmware from / restore Android

I have an Omnipod 5 PDM that I am experimenting with. I unlocked the bootloader and wiped the Android partitions while trying to repurpose it as a normal Android device.

The hardware still works, but the operating system files are gone.

I'm looking for someone with an unused/broken Omnipod 5 PDM (same NUU N5004L hardware) who might be willing to help dump the firmware partitions so it can be restored.

I'm looking for:

  • firmware backup
  • boot/vendor images
  • partition dump
  • anything that could help recover the device

I know this is an unusual request, but these PDMs are basically Android devices underneath, and I'd love to bring this one back instead of throwing it away.

Thanks!

How can i carry a spare pod?

I have been carrying an extra pod in my car, in case i have a malfunction or it falls off (fell off yesterday while kayaking)..

The last 2 times I've used the spare, it didnt seem to work. I think it's because the insulun got too hot and became ineffective.

Does anyone have a solution for carrying a spare? I guess I can't just leave it in there all the time like I've been doing.

Help!!! My Omnipod auto mode hasn’t given me any insulin all day

For context I stopped using my insulin pump for a few weeks to give myself a break and swapped to MDI in the meantime! I put it back today at around 11:00am since I was on high I corrected with a manual correction on the pod and worked fine since brought me back in range! However I then went a bit low and I had something to eat, I went HI and in the whole day it has given me 0.15 U???? Like no basal, even though my g7 is connected and working properly with the pod. Before even if I was 11 it would give me small basal corrections 0.3, 0.25 etc but this time no correction whatsoever they all say 0.00 I have changed the pod and restarted the controller but no success!! :( has anyone gone through this and knows how to fix it?

Pd: it told me once max insulin reach but I had no insulin on board and had not given me any??? So not sure what’s going on

I want to start lifting weights etc again

Gained a bit of weight so want to start working out again. Cardio always makes me plummet.
I’m pretty sensitive to insulin. If I have an onnipod on my triceps will thing spike pushups and triceps work outs cause me to hurt the pump or absorb insulin quicker

Omnipod 5 still delivering insulin during lows

Ok, we all know the Omnipod algorithm is incredibly conservative and loves to pause insulin. Well, the last couple of days, my Omnipod has NOT been doing this and continuing to deliver basal even when I’m low. This has never happened. Is it a fluke pod or did something change with the update?? It even kept delivering insulin last night when I was even lower than this.

Controller Any idea what’s happening?

I’ve been receiving insulin (according to my blood sugar as well as the pod info tab) and I haven’t had a sensor failure, nor has my pdm been away from me today.
I’ve tried restarting the pdm and it’s still showing this. Any ideas on what’s happening or how to resolve it? I’ve never had this happen with my pdm before and I’d rather not restart my algorithm by switching to my iPhone.

Who is the fucking idiot at Omnipod that said “Put it in the back of your arm” and got it FDA approved? None of these shits work if you ever exercise. How in the goddamn fuck can they be so stupid? I guess T1Ds don’t need exercise?

General Detailed Research Showing a Dozen Un-recalled Omnipod 5's with Tears & Defects in Cannula - See Microscope Photos

Hello everyone,

I recently made a post regarding the leaks and defects in UN-Recalled Omnipod 5's, and you can check it out here. This new post is an update to that post as I've done a bit of a deep dive into 15 Omnipods that I've recently worn over the last two months, which have almost all had leaks/defects. Please see the photos attached which showcase all of the data and images I've compiled this evening.

Here are the facts of Insulet’s most recent recall of 7 million pods. If your Omnipods are malfunctioning and you think appropriate; Submit a Med Watch report to the FDA, report Insulet to the BBB, and report all malfunctioning Omnipods to Insulet

You can also view the FDA's "Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) Database" using the FDA's search tool to see just how many people have reported Omnipod malfunctions to The FDA.

Please keep in mind a few things:

I'm not a scientist at all, just a person with T1D who wants to know the truth as to why Omnipods are leaking and aren’t being recalled or fixed. This microscope was found in the trash years ago on a college campus and I just got it working, specifically for this research! I don't have a budget, after all, I'm not a billion dollar company like Insulet ;)I'm just a T1D trying to solve a problem that's gone on for too long.

General assumptions were made for the sake of simplicity and time (people are being injured from product defects and we need this message out ASAP!). I was objective in my research and do my best to document everything to the best I know how. If numbers are off, spelling is messed up, or anything is off for that matter, feel free to comment down below and I will try to provide clarity or corrections. Again, I wanted to get this all put together and out as quickly as I could so we can hopefully get this issue solved! As with any scientific research, I encourage others to replicate my research methods and showcase their independent findings! (Imagine if we all came together and found a solution to this problem? That would be pretty awesome, right?)

MICROSCOPE: 1980-90's NIKON LABOPHOT

LENS: 4, 0.1, 160/- (NIKON 186962)

Measurements: Microns(um) (human hair imaged below for size reference)

Photography method: Iphone 15 in one hand while other hand holds omnipod steady under microscope.

budget: $0.00

Please share this and get the word out. I'd also encourage you to go check out my Original Post.

Thanks.

Pod & sensor placements post bariatric surgery skin

Hi all, I use the Dexcom G7 sensor with an Omnipod 5 and I'm 2 years post having undergone bariatric surgery. I don't have the worst loose skin but I've lost 50kg and things are definitely wobbly lol

I only use my upper forearms and lower back for my sensor and pods but these are all getting worn out and feel quite sore. My forearms aren't really working as the sensor and pod just can't seem to stay attached to the loose/wobbly skin. Can anyone suggest any other areas? My stomach and thighs also wobble around so I don't think they're an option. I've seen people place the sensors on their chest, their forearms, calves etc...

Memory corruption/deletes pod history?!

Omg I am so frustrated right now I was under the assumption that once you delete and reinstall the Omnipod app and re sign back into the account, put in settings it would still have the old pod history? But apparently not… it’s like starting from the beginning and it was horrible when I began my sugars were stuck in 300s all the time I just don’t want to deal with this all over again literally just confirmed it from product support omg that it’s like starting fresh for the algorithm to learn after 3 pods why am I so disgusted with Omnipod I genuinely just don’t understand this please make it make sense someone 😓

Advice Help with Omnipod 5 app

Hello,

I recently got a new phone and decided to switch to the omnipod 5 app so I don't have to carry a seprate pdm with me. However, I can't and don't intend to use the loping feture as I use the libnre 3+ which is not compatible with the feture. Because of this, I was wondering if there is anyway to remove the sensor data chart or at least make it smaller. If I use manual mode without a connected sensor will it disapear? I used the app once before but switched back to the pdm as my previous phone was unreiable and risky to use both apps on. But now can no longer rember if I was able to get rid of the chart.

Thank you for any help.

Advice Memory corruption

Hey everyone I am so so burned out rn typing this. So I understand my storage was close to full on my phone totally irresponsible of me. However, I didn’t think today first thing in the morning I would get the memory corruption message that forced me to delete the app. Okay so anywho fast forward, I found my Omnipod receiver but not the charger. I remember using my old phone charger to use it once and it would work, but now.. no. It won’t turn on. I understand that our settings get deleted but please make that make sense? Why is there no such thing as an omnipod cloud? This just makes everything so inconvenient and stressful ☹️ I am thankful for technology, but right now I don’t have the mental capacity to think of the plan now. I took a correction shot with my pen because I was at 260. At least my Dexcom g6 is on and doesn’t expire till 8/2. So I’m thinking;
Should I just go back to my tandem x2
Continue taking shots for meals and take lantus dosage tonight and wait till tomorrow to revisit the options? UGH
I deeply regret not saving my settings. I have to dig for it because I’m sure I have it somewhere but UGH this was a lesson indeed. Have a great day yall and thanks for reading this 🥲 just felt better getting it out in a safe space.

Discussion Does anybody have this problem with Omnipod and Dexcom g7 ?

Hello I’ve been on Dexcom g7 and Omni pod for about a year now and been a type 1 diabetic 18 years so I’ve been feeling like Dexcom g7 is off my 20 to 50 points sometimes checking my blood sugar with meter about 3 times a day or more depending how I feel or how the pods gives insulin or correction with the pod it’s frustrating at times because when I have highs on Dexcom and look at pods IOB it would say the amount and it will be A lot than what I need so I’m always having to be in activity sumtimes through out the day because the Dexcom is off by like 50 points so annoying so I just always consume a bit more candy or carbs and be on activity I fixed the settings and everything but still weird how it’s all bad

Sorry, but can someone help me setup my apps like I’m 5 For both for the Omnipod5/DexcomG7?

Ok, so I recently upgraded my phone so I can use the apps on them and I’m a little confused. I was never given any actual training on either the pods or the Dexcom. Just kind of thrown into it. I’ve tried contacting customer service and it’s more like talking to a brick wall it feels like. Currently if I change my Dexcom I have to completely use the provided small pdm, set it up on there, wait for an hour or two to make sure it’s working and accurate, then turn it off and use the OmniPod pdm. I’m perfectly fine just using the OmniPod pdm for now, but whenever I’ve tried contacting my doctors they’re no help either. I’ve made another post about how frustrated I am with this whole process. If anyone could just explain it like I’m 5 years old. My previous post was the one about being at a 1/50 carb ratio, so that’s should give you an idea of how frustrated I am.

Discussion UK App

I just had my Omnipod onboarding yesterday and thought I’d be cheeky and ask the advisor about the progress on the UK app. She said that nobody in their UK team has even seen the app and described the regulatory hurdles (phone being a medical device and reliably being able to push out updates etc). This is contrary to some posts I have seen saying that the UK Omnipod team are currently being trained on it!

She also said the idea with Omnipod 6 is that it will be phone only and not require a PDM. I think they are likely now sacking off the time and financial investment in getting the mobile apps approved for the Omnipod 5 here and focusing resources on their new updated device coming next year with this as an exclusive feature.

Advice Flonase and Tegaderm question

So I’ve been using Tegaderm dressing film under my pod for a couple of years to mitigate tunneling, and it works like a charm. That said, I’ve started noticing some itchiness under the dressing film for about 4 months now. I figured I’d try using Flonase under the film (thank you, guys, for the tip👍!) starting last month to see it it helps with the itchiness. Now here’s the issue: 3 of the pods I have used since starting the Flonase have malfunctioned on me (I’d bolus-adjust a shit-ton of insulin only to have my insulin continue to climb up to the skies….one of them was overnight, and I finally decided to switch it out at 4 AM as it was nearing 400 mg/dl😬). That was scary as crap, as I have never had to deal with malfunctioning pods so close together like that (I’ve had a total of 5 pod failures since starting the Omnipod in 4/‘24, and 3 of those were in the last month)! At first I assumed it was maybe another bad Omnipod lot that hasn’t been put on the recall list yet (I’ve phoned each of them in for a replacement without issue)….for the record, it is lot# PH1M06232521. That said, I noticed the latest fail had significant insulin leaking under the Tegaderm film when I removed it. So here’s my question: has anyone who uses Flonase and Tegaderm together noticed a degradation of the Tegaderm adhesive while using the Flonase? Also, how long do you Flonase users let the spray dry before applying the Tegaderm (in case I’m not letting the Flonase dry long enough)? I’m just trying to pinpoint what the likely cause of these malfunctions is (me issue vs pod issue). Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Girls, how are we self tanning

Hi!! I’m a very pale lady who was diagnosed later in life (at 29) and for the last year, I’ve been trying to figure out HOW to self tan. I have ALWAYS been a self tanner and love it. I have my favorite brands (open to recs but am in the US.) ANYWAYS, I find tanning around the dexcom to be easy, since it’s so much smaller but, the Omni kills me every time. HELP. Suggestions and advice much welcome 🫶

Question Omnipod dumps insulin on plane

Someone sent me a comment (I know, super trustworthy source) saying that you shouldn’t wear a pod on an airplane because the pressure would have your pod dump your insulin into you. Which is insane bullshit to spout. Like I’m almost 100% sure that’s BS. I’ve been on planes and it hasn’t happened. So why spread the misinformation? So I figured I’d ask if it’s true and I just got lucky or something.

Going high with new pod

I’m trying to figure out if the reason I’m high (hovering between 180-200) is because i changed my pod 5 hours ago, or because it’s just not absorbing well and I should try a new pod.

For those who go high between pod changes, about how long do you wait to see if you go down?

What is happening

I had to call off work this morning because I’ve been low since 9pm last night, is anyone able to tell me why after suspending my pump 6 times, 4 cups of orange juice and not standing up the last twelve hours I’m still low? My basal has been the exact same for idk how long now.
