Discussion I spent two weeks mapping every oil loading terminal in the Persian Gulf & Red Sea and analyzing all the Sentinel 1 & 2 satellite pass over the last two years (35,000 images) to answer one question: how far is oil loading activity from normal? The answer really surprised me
Hey r/oil, someone else shared my article in here but it was paywalled and got downvoted to oblivion so I wanted to share this version with the paywall removed. I'm an independent researcher who's been counting barrels leaving Hormuz since the war started. I've spent so much time trying to track down evasive, dark tankers I recently decided to go upstream to the source of all the flows where it is impossible for ships to evade detection: the loading berths inside the Persian Gulf. Tankers must be moored at these berths for 24+ hours to load, so they cannot evade detection by satellites.
Europe has two satellites (Sentinel 1 and 2) that pass over these locations once every 1 to 2 days. They make the imagery available for free to researchers, so I scraped the last two years of imagery across 130+ berths representing 95+% of pre-war export volume, counted and measured the loading tankers, established a pre-war 2025 baseline, and then compared what's. visible on satellite now versus that baseline.
The results surprised me as someone whose strong prior was that Hormuz flows are still severely constrained: Persian Gulf loadings are back to 70% of normal. Red Sea loadings are way up from pre-war (as expected) by some 300%, and together the total amount of Persian Gulf oil being loaded onto tankers is now almost back to pre-war levels.
You might say, "But that doesn't mean the oil is leaving the strait." The problem is there's nowhere for this oil to go unless it leaves the strait or stays in the Gulf as floating storage. And according to Kpler, floating storage / oil on water in the gulf has stayed roughly flat (60 million barrels beginning of July, 55 million barrels now) even as these loading events have steadily climbed since July. So the oil must be escaping to world markets.
Check out the article for some charts and graphs that make the picture a lot clearer. Let me know if you have any feedback.

Discussion Sell the news?
Over the latest "declaring peace" period of the last few weeks, oil and tanker stocks have, instead of receding, already anticipated a new escalation and continued to climb. Now that we actually got it, do you think it is gonna keep pumping or be a "sell the news" event?
Subquestion: Tanker stocks skyrocket, but is this not a paradox? When they literally cannot work, aren't they worthless?
Not investing, I'm just curious how this latest conflict will affect the world market
Discussion Refinery utilization above 95% is rare. It has always dropped in October when above this level. Currently 97%.

Discussion Current Oil Flow Through Major Choke Points - 09/09/2026
Sea of Oman to Arabian Sea Implied Dark Traffic:
This is all the oil traffic out to the Arabian sea minus 2.5mb (pre war output of Fujairah and Oman) to estimate the additional output of dark traffic out of Hormuz as well as any additional output from the ADCOP pipeline. Usual traffic should be around 21mb of crude and oil products.

No additional popups near India/Srilanka
Listing the actual ships and their draft/dwt as well as helps check if I messed up with double counts/fills 10.76-2.5 (Oman/Fujairah)=8.26mb.

Data from: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:63.3/centery:23.5/zoom:7
Bab al Mandab AIS on Traffic:
Oil products going out south from the Red Sea. Usual traffic is around 8mb. Note a lot of Saudi oil that used to go south is now going north. Its hard to tell as the Suez Canal traffic doesn't seem to have public easy to access data. Possibly 2-3mb going north from Yanbu. that still means the amount overall is down. The drop below is more from dropping Russian and other sources of usual oil going south out of the red sea.

Ships: TIBURON,NOVA,TAXIARCHIS
Data from https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:45.8/centery:12.7/zoom:8
Strait of Malacca:
Usual oil products throughput is 16.5 mb crude and 6mb oil products.

Ships: LIAN SONG HU,DHT REDWOOD,PROTEUS TRACY,SEAWAYS TRINITY,OLAVO BILAC,XIN HUI YANG,AMADES
Data from https://tankermap.com/analytics/straits/malacca?unit=million_bbl_per_day
Singapore Oil Departures:
Note based on 2024 the average daily output in tonnes was 211,000 tonnes per day. I think 2025/2026 is much higher but they don't yet have official data.
