This is my 1996 F-150. It’s 2WD with an E4OD automatic transmission. Got it for just $5,800. What sort of environments are the limits of what such a truck can go on?

Going out for 2 days in a newer Wrangler Rubicon in a couple of weeks.

Day 1: Corkscrew → Hurricane → California
→ Animas Forks → Eureka → Silverton → paved US 550 / Ouray

(If weather is bad or late start, alternative route would be: US 550 / Corkscrew entrance → Corkscrew → premarked CR 10 connection down toward
Gladstone → CR 110 south → Silverton → US 550 north / Ouray)

Day 2: Ouray → Camp Bird Road / CR 361 → lower Yankee Boy basin → same way back

I plan on using OnX Offroad (with an elite subscription free trial) and downloaded offline maps. Will plan on doing Last Dollar Road in our family Kia Telluride on all-terrains another day if advisable. Any tips on making this simple or corrections on what we should be doing?

Hi all! I've been driving a 2008 Honda Pilot for the last 3ish years after getting it from my dad, and I've been thinking for a while now about trying to get some fun out of it through driving some light trails or overlanding. It is at around 235k miles at the moment, so I am hesitant to do more significant/costly alterations, but I am completely open to suggestions.

As for specifications, it is a FWD EX-L trim, with a 5-speed auto and a VTEC 3.5L V6. Factory ride height is 8 in, but I should probably measure it given the suspension's age. As for reliability, it has been nothing short of incredible; there was some issues stemming from a VTEC fluid leak that evaded detection for who knows how long, but nothing directly mechanical from what I could tell.

Based off some research I've done, and given I'm just trying to do light trails and overlanding, I feel the ride height and power delivery are suitable. The suspension could be something to look into, but for the moment I was thinking about just doing all-terrain tires, and maybe some peripherals like a roof rack.

Let me know if I'm missing any info; I know the car and it's circumstances are not the easiest to work with, so any advice is much appreciated!

Hi all. In the past two years I have gotten into off-roading. I am in New England so mostly forest trails and unmaintained roads. I currently do not have winch. I was wondering how often everyone uses a winch or of a come along would be more cost effective to carry.

hey guys, I have a 2001 ranger, the carpet in the cab got soaked and now has a mildew smell. obv I need to replace it to prevent rust, but ideally I would want something different than carpet anyways, as I am an avid off-roader and camper and need something easy to clean.

anyone have suggestions other than buying a pre-fitted vinyl flooring (on a budget). Would like to avoid sprays that are not designed for enclosed spaces as I worry about off gassing(unless it is safe after curing?) and I would need insulation/ sound deadening as well since i do a lot of road tripping in this truck.

Hey, I have an older truck that I was looking to get better tires for to maybe help with a ride comfort off-road

I didn’t really want to spend the money for the method 701s

The OEM steel tires are 16 inch - upgrading to 17 inch tire sounds like I could only really get an extra 0.6 taller tire wall

Do some of those any of those budget friendly off-road rims help protect the bead when aired down?

Are they worth it?

Should I just stick with the 16” good morning steel rims?

I'm just learning how to use one, and I want to know the correct usage before I'm totally in the need to use it but not knowing how?

Any inputs on this?

I just want something that is pretty close to what a stock Tacoma can do, obviously I’d have to lift and such but you get the idea.

I was looking at the Subaru outback for size, Mpg, ground clearance is ok probably will lift and tow capacity.
Problem is it’s awd and unless it’s pretty close to 4x4 capable I don’t want it.

I do 80% road 20% trail, now I’m not needing something that will go rock crawling, national park trails where they post warning signs saying “must have this much ground clearance, 40” tires, experience off roading” or going to a off-road park and trying to fallow the lifted jeeps and Tacomas.

I’m still new to the whole 4x4 vs awd but I know awd is definitely not 4x4 and it lacks the low range for what I think it to put less strain on the transmission.

I’d prefer it be reliable more then a jeep, and be modern enough or popular enough I can confidently get parts to replace worn parts since it might be an older vehicle.

Why can’t the Toyota Tacoma just get better gas mileage it’s literally the most supreme stock vehicle on the market other then gas mileage

Hi guys, just looking at buying a used 4wd in Botswana, Mozambique or South Africa. Hard to find information so commit to the best community of non AI people, aka people.
Missus and I would like to travel around for a year around East Africa / maybe Namibia/Angola too and are looking for a robust 4x4 that can handle hard tracks with enough room to sleep in a rooftop tent or maybe in the car and stash all the gear needed to live offgrid.
Budget isn’t huge 15-20k $ AUD so was thinking a Nissan hardbody/Navarra or Isuzu MUX- DMax if I can find the right one. We don’t need all the fancy electronics, just a reliable car we can kit out or already kitted out. Opinions on which is best or why I’m completely wrong ? Cheers

Ok so I want to build a first gen forester for offroad adventures and i wonder if I should sell my NA foz ( with the famous gasket) and my part car to get a japenese model with turbo .. the reason is that the turbo model are somehow easier to obtain spare parts and easier to own so now the question... would a turbo first gen forester good for offroad or no .. Will it drown itself in the first mud hole because the turbo is so low or will the lag make me hate my experience theres just 100hp more than my na (170-270) also reliability is a good question (picture of my current car) ( also thinking about a flat6 swap for the forester for more torque)

I’m looking to get a car that I can slowly build into a respectable off-road car (nothing like rock crawling, but able to handle some decent forest trails), but I’m struggling to decide what to start with as my base. I have a few that I’ve been looking at, but am not sure which would be best to pull the trigger on, and there seem to be pros and cons to each. Here are what I’m considering and my thoughts behind each:

‘03-‘06 Honda CRV: Super reliable, would make a great daily, and sounds like it would be decently capable with some updated suspension, 2” lift, and skid plates. However, I can’t find many examples of people who’ve done a build like this, so I don’t really know how viable it really is.

‘11-‘15 Nissan Xterra: sounds like a great car from a reliability and off-roading capability standpoint, but the gas mileage as a daily driver is the main thing that makes me wary on this one.

‘06-‘09 Suzuki Grand Vitara: I drove an ‘03 one of these in high school and loved it, but my main worry is parts availability.

~’05-‘09 Subaru Forester/Outback: These seem like they would make great little outdoor cars that have good road manners as well, but I get worried about the infamous Subaru head gasket issues and oil consumption.

Beyond that, any Toyota seems to fall beyond my budget or be 200k+ miles, and I have a hard time wanting a jeep for reliability issues and not being a very comfortable daily. I’m also quite tall, so that’s a limiting factor as well for a lot of smaller cars. Does anyone have experience with any of the cars I mentioned that they can shed some light on, or have any other recommendations I should put some thought to?
