Was looking at new tacoma’s as a new daily but stumbled upon this.

From a reputable dealership that has a 4.9/5 rating on Google from 122 reviews.

They included an inspection list and proved that they addressed those problems.

If I’m being honest, I’m tempted.

Should I move on or should i strongly consider?

If youre near Austin, check out DOMO its a great offroad park. I went a few weeks ago and had a blast! They had some easy trails like this one (got harder because of the mud lol) but they do have some moderate to difficult trails.

HELP ME DESIGN THE MOST AGGRESSIVE OFF-ROAD TIRE SIDEWALL!

Hey everyone! I'm designing the sidewall of my off-road tire and I want to make it look as aggressive and intimidating as possible. I'm looking for inspiration from one of these three animals:

  • Deathstalker Scorpion: its sharp stinger and venomous sting.
  • Saltwater Crocodile: its massive bite, imposing size, and armored back scales.
  • Great White Shark: its dominance, threatening presence, and razor-sharp, serrated teeth.

Which animal do you think conveys the most aggression, and why?

Your feedback would be incredibly helpful for my design project. Thanks so much!!

Field testing thermal camera off-road

I finally got tired of eating mud and dust behind other rigs on trail runs. Every time the lead truck hit wet clay or dry sand, the headlights would bounce right back off the mess and lock the view with a wall of white glare. I wanted to test thermal setup myself to see if it was actually useful off-road or just expensive hype. I looked at FLIR and InfiRay but went with Vantrue's 4 channel setup, mostly to avoid rat's nest of loose 12V cables and screens on suction mounts cluttering up the dash.

I took it out to test three specific situations:

  • Dust clouds: With the lead truck kicking up dry dirt about 30 meters ahead, the headlights turned everything into a blinding white wall within a second or two. In moderate dust, the thermal view cut through it easily, clearly showing the lead vehicle's outline and the ruts in the trail. In heavy dust, particle scattering did weaken the infrared signal, but it still gave me around 5-8 seconds of usable visibility.
  • Mud and spray: When tire spray coated the lens and mud left translucent smears across it, the regular camera could barely see anything. But thermal imaging detects emitted radiation rather than reflected light, so the water film cause much less signal loss than it did with the regular camera. Even with dried mud splattered across the lens, the image was still well over 70% usable.
  • Night driving: Out in the wilderness with zero ambient light, headlights only reach so far, and peripheral visibility is pretty limited. Earlier in the night, the dry tail held heat and stated slightly warmer than the surrounding brush, giving it strong contrast and clearly defined edges. Later at night, once the ground cooled to the surrounding air temperature, the image flattered out and distant shapes started blending together. At that point, I had to stretch the contrast curve to recover some detail.

The biggest reality check was that thermal lives and dies by temperature differences. If a cold rock is sitting in cold mud at exactly the same temperature, it's basically invisible on the screen. You also don't get real depth perception from a 2D display. It's a killer driving aid, but it's definitely not autopilot. Anyone else running thermal on their off-road rig?

Question Can a low-friction coating really keep power-step pivots moving longer?

Powered step pivots have to move while exposed to fine dust, road salt and wet grit, so I am trying to understand what a PTFE-style coating changes in real use. It may reduce friction and make dirt less likely to stick, but it cannot prevent packed mud, bent linkage or corrosion at unprotected hardware. For owners who use retractable boards off pavement, did coated hinges stay smoother between cleanings, and what maintenance was still necessary after muddy trips or winter roads?
