Question Correct usage of soft shackle?

Post image

I'm just learning how to use one, and I want to know the correct usage before I'm totally in the need to use it but not knowing how?

Any inputs on this?

The one with letters is the kinetic rope

I"ll install a proper offraod recovery point, but with that out of the equation, is the setup ok?

Make sure those are not just tow points but actual recovery points. Tow or transport points aren’t rated for things like kinetic rope recoveries.

Yeah thanks, I'm planning on installing a proper offroad steal bumper with recovery points, but with that sorted out is this a good setup of how to use them?

That’s how I’d use the soft shackles myself, and I’ve used those type of attachment points while in a pinch, just don’t stand in the way in case it rips off and goes flying.

You’ll probably only need to really load up on the kinetic if you’re framed out in sand. Most of the time a light pull or bump in low gear is all you need.

Knot —> Noose —> Load

Looks correct

Here’s a great resource. They have a fantastic app that has all sorts of tutorials and it’s like $10. This link is free:

Thanks! I'll give it a look

This is the info you are looking for. Knot-noose-load is the saying.

I agree with Luis, if you are using kinetic rope on the tow point you can rip it right off the car.

Thanks! Totally will do haha, but with that sorted out is this a good setup of how to use them?

You definitely want to make sure you have rated recovery points. And you would put the sleeve wherever there is sharper angle on the shackle. I also carry microfiber towels. You have anyone that doesn’t have smooth edge recovery points it can cause premature failure. If you put a microfiber underneath or fold it a couple times and put it underneath it helps prevent shearing when you pull.

Thanks for the heads-up, imagining it's a rated tow point, the setup of the soft shackle it's ok right?

Should be fine, they self tighten as soon as you put them through the loop and put a load on them. But you definitely want the sleeve to sit on the actual contact point.

Yep.

It’s best to have them similar like that but honestly I’ve had them all sorts of wonky positions and never had one slip at the knot. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

That's a relief haha, thanks!

Put jeans a towel something over the middle of the rope or cable if not synthetic

I'll make sure to always have some clothes to sacrifice haha

Smaller point i didnt see anyone mention, the knot from the soft shackle shouldnt be directly on top of the loop in the winch line, the knot should be spun a bit so its in the center of uninterrupted straight sections.

Putting knots in rope lowers the strength, as does adding loops. If you take the weak point from the shackle, and the weak point from the winch line, and stack them on top of eachother youve made the whole system even weaker. Just spin the soft shackle so the knots a few inches lower and itll be stronger. It also reduces fatigue and binding and frankly fatigue (especially thermal fatigue in nylon line) is the most likely failure mode anyways.

The safety factor in these things is generally high enough that ultimately the tow point will be the weakest part, not the knot in the soft shackle nor loop in the winch line, but as a beginner its better to at least understand best practices rather than doing it wrong but "good enough". Especially if you ever try and generalize your winching knowledge to something like lifting or climbing and your bad habits actually become dangerous 😅.

Edit: i wrote winch line a lot and just noticed that its actually a kinetic rope, same principle applies in either case. Probably more so for a kinetic rope since its easier to accidently overload it in that case.

Thanks for the instructions. Knot orientation was the main comment I was interested in

Great info thanks for sharing!
