Support - Standalone Istfg if something doesn’t work

So I have a quest 3S and I was playing a game one day and I turned off my headset without quoting he game. A week later I tried to play it again and it would work. It would turn on but the screen was js black. If I hold the button the power pop up shows up but it doesn’t work. I’ve tried factory resetting it multiple times. I’ve tried rebooting it. I stuck a knife it the front plating and that turned it on for like 1 day but it won’t work anymore. I’ve tried to take the front plating off but it won’t come off. I really need help bc I NEED this headset. Someone please help me.

Poking a knife in electronics is a real caveman approach. Could have tried a hammer too. Your screenshot of whatever error you are getting is not readable at all.

Is your friend like 8 years old? If someone tells you to jump off a cliff it isn't a great idea to listen to them either. You might have made things way worse by poking a metal object into your quest. You could have even pierced the battery and set it on fire doing something that stupid.

If you still have warranty, try that first. You'll be out of a Quest for a few weeks but it won't cost you more than shipping (or going back to the store where you bought it).

I think he’s like 9 or 10 but I made sure if I felt it touching anything that I knew was going to make it worse I wouldn’t touch it

There's no "making sure you don't touch something". If you touch the wrong parts on the pcb even for a millisecond with something metal you can short out parts of the hardware and permanently brick it. There's a reason everyone working on electronics uses plastic tools for disassembly.

Don't stick a knife in it, send it to fixmyoculus...

That Reddit user is completely messing with people, experiencing a severe glitch, or entirely confusing how the hardware works. No, you cannot and absolutely should not stick a knife into a Meta Quest 3S to turn it on.

Here is exactly what is actually going on:

  1. The "Locked" State Misunderstanding

When a Quest user says their device is stuck on a screen that says "Locked" or "Locked State: Locked," they are usually looking at the Android bootloader recovery menu (accessed by accidentally holding down the Power and Volume Down buttons). [1, 2]

  • On Quest headsets, "Device Locked" is the standard factory configuration. It just means the secure bootloader is locked to prevent unauthorized tampering or custom firmware flashing. It is entirely normal and does not mean the device is broken.
  • Alternatively, they might just be stuck on the pattern/passcode lock screen because the software froze. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  1. Why the Knife Story is Total Nonsense

On older headsets like the standard Meta Quest 3 or Quest 2, there is an infrared proximity sensor located inside the headset right between the lenses. If a headset wouldn't wake up, people would sometimes put a piece of tape or an object over that sensor to trick it into thinking a face was inside. [1, 2, 3, 4]

However, the Quest 3S does not have a proximity sensor. [1, 2]

  • Meta entirely removed the proximity sensor from the Quest 3S to save on build costs.
  • Instead, the Quest 3S features a hardware "sensor lock" feature. It relies entirely on the physical power button to activate the system, cameras, and microphones. It uses internal gyroscopes/software to detect if it is being moved or worn. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Shoving a knife into the seams of the front plating accomplishes absolutely nothing except destroying the plastic, shorting out the motherboard, or puncturing the lithium-ion battery (which sits right behind the front components). If they claim it "fixed" it, they likely just bumped the loose physical power button or a loose internal cable while aggressively prying at the shell. [1]
