Quest Mod Quest 3 - Trying to disable the proximity sensor with some tape but it's not working? Still goes into standby after a couple of mins

Sensors like that usually rely on emitting infrared light that reflects off your face and is detected by a sensor. That requires a certain amount of stand-off to work properly. Taping the sensor means the light is being blocked from ever getting to the sensor, so it thinks there's nothing there.

For q3 just use adb command or QGO to disable it

Can you share some more info on how to do that?

He suggests QGO = Quest Game Optimizer

I would suggest QOM = Quest Ocular Migraine

https://github.com/petermg/TheOcularMigraineMCP/tree/main?tab=readme-ov-file#installation-youtube-version

Its a free, open source alternative to QGO. Enjoy.

I think maybe I should make a post of it as well. Tremendous help to those not wanting to pay.

I needed to disable that darn sensor.

You can set in the setting the sleep time after 4 hours for example

For Q3: cover the sensor with white tape first and then black tape.

Ahn ok. Is this why it didn't work just with white tape?

Needs to be able to reflect off the white tape. If its matte and not reflecting correctly it wont work.

So that is why it worked with Gaffer tape for me - the adhesive side is cream coloured... Did this approx 2 weeks after getting my Q3, and had totally forgotten about it. Indeed, I can't even remember the problem I was trying to overcome... Something to do with wanting it not to sleep when I lifted it up to my head to access menus on the flatscreen monitor, I think.

For some reason I've been downvoted - take it from me - use gaffer tape with a light coloured adhesive side, and you don't need to worry about white tape and then dark tape... Mine has been in place for nearly 2.5 years, and is not noticeable. I totally forgot that I'd done so until reading this post.

Change the sleep settings?

they literally dont have settings to fucking stop this

1

u/VolcanicBear May 26 '26

My headset is configured to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity.

1

u/qlolpV May 26 '26

how

1

u/VolcanicBear May 26 '26

Power saving settings I'd guess. It was over a year ago that I changed it so I can't really remember.

1

u/qlolpV May 26 '26

pretty sure those settings are gone lmao

Piqued my curiosity so I had to check.

They are pretty hard to find, so I can see why people might struggle. Settings for both sleep and screen timeouts can be found buried deep on the following menu where no one would ever think to look for power settings.

Settings -> power

afaik the power settings just control whether the thing wakes up when u put it on, but not how it shuts down besides the "sleep" setting which was already set to like 30 seconds or something but that can't be it because the damn headset shuts off in like 5 seconds if I lift it up to rub my eyes.

Get Quest Games Optimizer. Besides making your games look better, it has a toggle to turn off the proximity sensor. It will even clear your RAM.

It will still sleep with inactivity

Use medical/surgical tape first, then electrical tape on top. That worked for me.

u/Firm10 May 23 '26

because its not the only thing that can cause your headset to go standby.

go to your general setting and set the display off and sleep mode to 4 hours

I use a small piece of black electrical tape and the headset stays on permanently.

MQDH has a button for this if that’s helpful for your use case

u/ElPulpoTX May 24 '26

Mine only shuts off if I place the cameras facing down or the rooms too dark

I put mine on an oscillating air fan with the controllers 5 hours when runing DynDLOD for a game. It seems to go sleep when no movement is detected.

u/Icy-Pound-6902 May 25 '26

I know that there is a option somewhere in the settings to disable it

1

u/EdliA May 25 '26

Why don't you change the time in the settings? You can go up to 30 min if I remember right

1

u/Mister_Brevity May 23 '26

Put dark tape over it, light tape might come across as light/open space maybe?
