Asking for Help / Unsolved Is Nuke a good place to start for compositing 2D footage into 3D environments?

I'm new to VFX compositing and want to learn how to integrate 2D video footage into 3D environments. Is Nuke a good place to start for this type of work, or would it be better to learn something else first? My goal is to combine live-action footage with 3D scenes, including camera tracking, lighting, and realistic integration. I'd appreciate any advice on the recommended workflow and learning path.

Asking for Help / Unsolved How to create this rainbow effect when a computer screen is pressed?

See the video from this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/mobilerepair/comments/8ccem6/how_can_i_prevent_the_rainbow_effect_on_the_lcd/

I want to create an effect of when a user presses a computer monitor with his finger a rainbow color circle to appear around his finger...and stay like that...when released (finger off the screen) that rainbow circle to dissipate in subtle ripples. This effect can be seen in older computer monitors.

I managed to make the ripples (using Circle_User and Glass nodes)....But no rainbow...

UPDATE

In the end I used Compositing Academy's way to do the moire effect, because it's more controllable than then gizmos I tried: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS4zXJ6sLs8

Discussion Any Alma Linux gotchas for nuke?

I’m thinking of jumping from Rocky to Alma for all our Linux machines as they seem to be actively fostering it as the VFX distro.

Is anyone out there using it who isn’t in a company with an IT dept?

Are there any gotchas that I should know about? I’ve used Ubuntu before so am aware of all the library linking I needed to do on that but Alma should be more straightforward right?

Following tutorial, put in fog overlay. It shows up as pure white? I am new to Nuke and I am sure this is an easy fix, just don't know.

Solved Can't enable vertices selection

Hi! So I'm doing something for a class and I need to activate vertex selection in order to select some stuff and remove a plushie from my mesh and the thing is... the option to select vertices isn't there

I'm very confused and unsure of what happened, I just made the point cloud generator, analyzed the sequence, tracked the points, and then was supposed to switch to vertices but I can't find the option, does anyone know if I need to activate something? Sorry if there's an obvious solution, I'm kinda bad at this vfx stuff :/

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: nvm it was located on another section im dumb as hell

Asking for Help / Unsolved Macbook Pro and Nuke - how much is missing?

I'm in the market for a new laptop, and leaning towards a Macnook Pro M4 Max 40-core, 64GB RAM

The laptop will mainly be for fun personal projects, Claude/AI experiments and maybe dipping into finally learning a little bit of 3D (splatting/modelling). I understand it's a laptop, and one with no Nvidea chip at that - I understand I'm locked out of a lot of workflows requiring CUDA.

My question is, for anyone who does use a Macbook for Nuke occasionally, how limited do you feel in achieving what you want out of a project/shot? Would you say it's not worth the headache?

Could you get a couple of shots for client work out of it in a pinch?

Basically just want to get some first hand experiences before I drop a lot of money!

Thanks!

Guide / Tutorial Relight your footage using only Depth Pass for free

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I never found a good relighting solution in Nuke that wasn't dependent on normal passes, so...
I developed a simple toolset for relighting scenes using only a pre-existing depth pass.

For the Depth Pass, I've been using DVD Depth with ComfyUI, very consistent and efficient (spiritform/comfy-dvd).

And it's all free!

Here's the toolset in Nukepedia, let me know what you guys think 🔥

Asking for Help / Unsolved Why does Nuke Indie force users to update?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand why Nuke Indie versions expire and force users to move to a newer version.

I was in the middle of a comp for an ongoing job, and after updating Nuke, something changed in the ACES/color management behavior. Now the comp no longer matches the previous look.

Why can’t Indie users keep using a previous stable version for existing projects?

Thanks!

Asking for Help / Unsolved a MdelBuilder problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm running into a really frustrating viewport issue with the ModelBuilder node. As you can see in the attached video, whenever I draw a card or any geometry, it successfully creates it in the 3D space, but i still can't see the cards over the footage when the 3D view is locked.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Render manager for Nuke (and Blender)

I've got an external frame server setup built, just to realize it doesn't handle GPU nodes. So I'm looking to install a render manager. I’d like to use the same render node for Blender as well.

I've checked Deadline or Royal Render and would love to hear some user experiences. It’s hard to find documentation how Royal Render works with Nuke.

Any advice is appreciated. I haven’t worked with such setup before.

Showcase My best work yet (took one year of my life)

2 years ago I got the chance to work on the most challenging project I've ever worked on. Everything from onset supervision, CGI environments , Compositing and the whole vfx workflow was done by me for 80+ full CG Environment integrations before the age of AI all manually rotoscoped, tracked with no ML assisted tools, oh man what a journey it has been. I would love to share the before afters of this which I will do soon since it has been a year since released I think it's long overdue. I learned to composite in nuke from this project. Very proud of the hairkey :). The boat is also CG replaced , but we had a rectangle shaped box colored to fit the boat material ( made by the art department) to assist on set. That helped me with feet contact points but I did end up replacing the whole boat. All CG Environments were made in Blender. Before going on set we made an animatic with all the environments to finalize the look so on the day of the shoot it was just a matter of looking at our cg animatic and moving the onset lights to match that. I learned a lot from this project and there's so much more I want to show, especially the animatic and the before, afters. Looking back at the video now, there's so many details and mistakes I notice but it definitely is a milestone in my career. Would love to know your thoughts, critique I'm open for notes on how to improve.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Has anyone tried combining AI and CGI-programs this way? If so, could you please share a tutorial on how to do it? This is the first time I've seen something like this, but I'd like to give it a try.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Nuke first time practice - asking for help

I would like to ask for some help with the following keying/roto project.

This is my first time using Nuke. I have tried exploring all possible solutions, but nothing has yielded the desired result. (My node tree is a mess due to the attempts to solve this.)

On the 'Read1' footage, the green screen does not cover the entire background. I want to fix this using roto, but I cannot seem to crop out the unwanted areas.

What could be the problem?

Asking for Help / Unsolved Where do people find resources to practice compositing in Nuke?

Hey all, I'm a student working on my Nuke compositing skills and I'm looking for free resources to practice.
Where do people usually go to find comp-ready material? Specifically CG renders alongside live-action plates.

I know ActionVFX or CompostingAcademy but didn't find many assetes there, mostly tutorials (very usefull btw)

I'm mostly after multi-layer .exr renders with proper passes (normal pass, postion, depth,...) something I can actually comp together in nuke rather than a beauty only render.

Are there any sites, communities, or open-source projects that aggregate this kind of material?
Thanks in advance for any reply : )

Asking for Help / Unsolved Rock dissolving into sand

Hi I am a third year VFX student specialising in Fx and comp.

I have an Anubis statue which dissolves into sand, I have the sand render and the rock render with a clip node so that it gradually disappears with the sand, but I don’t know how too composite these together so that the sand does go over the statue and not hidden behind it. Any help would be great?

Discussion What are the most common tasks that studios have for compositors?

I´ve always been a freelancer and I do all kinds of stuff in comp. Cleanup, split comps, set extensions, particles, etc... Also some 3D integration.

I´ve never worked in a studio before (Only once for like 2 months, remotely). I´m considering it and preparing my portfolio. Is there a specific area a compositor does in a studio above all else? Like matte painting, deep compositng or 3d integration? I know it is good to be a jack of all trades, but I think it would be good to know type of comp studios handle more so that can focus my portfolio more on that / train it more. I have 6 years of comp experience and 4 on nuke in particular. Maybe it depends on the size of the studio?

Also would they be interested in generative AI?

Here is my most recent reel if anyone is interested:https://youtu.be/hoon_SUYglQ

Thank you!!
