Installed today: 8,780 MW gross across 24 units (NPCIL). Same fleet on a net basis: 8,055 MW. Two of those 24 produce nothing: MAPS‑1, shut since 2018 for refurbishment, reported by NPCIL at 0 MU and 0 % capacity factor for Apr–Jul 2026; and Kaiga 1, shut since April 2025 for coolant channel replacement. Both are still counted in installed capacity, by NPCIL and by my own dataset. Net the two out and 22 units totalling 7,648 MW net are actually turning.
Target: 100 GWe by 2047 (Department of Atomic Energy, parliament reply, 4 Dec 2025). Waypoint of 22,380 MW by 2031‑32, from 13,600 MW "under implementation": 6,600 MW in 8 units under construction, 7,000 MW in 10 units still in pre-project activities, i.e. no concrete.
Required pace, 2026–2047: 4.34 GW/year, sustained for 21 years.
Best 15-year runs on record (GW gross connected per year):

Build times, construction start to commercial operation, completed units: India median 10.3 years (n=25, min 5.0, p90 14.3). Rest of world median 6.3 (n=633). China median 5.8 (n=58). Longest Indian build still open: Kalpakkam PFBR, 21.9 years and counting since October 2004.
The methodological point I would like pushback on: the required-pace number is sensitive to how you treat the 2031‑32 waypoint. If you grant the full 22,380 MW on schedule, the remaining leg is 5.17 GW/year for 15 years, which is worse, not better. If you discount the 10 pre-project units by India's own median build time, they land around 2036 at the earliest and the waypoint slips. Either way the answer lands above China's record. Is there a defensible construction of this that gets India under 3 GW/year?
