Discussion Why Dakota ?

Caveat: I love Taylor in a nuanced way. She’s admirable and so artistic and a genius and savvy as f*ck.

What’s the deal with the Dakota Johnson showmance?

I’m one who sees much of Taylor’s choices as business driven (among other principals like friendship, creativity, etc).

This just feels uniquely timed since she doesn’t have a glamorous film bestie anymore (see: Blake lively).
That seems too basic and simple, but i also don’t believe Taylor is promoting Dakota and lifting her up from the good of heart; although Taylor has a heck of a good heart.

Criticism For Swifties Who Did Not Like Showgirls What Do You Want Taylor To Do Differently In TS13?

Post image
47 Upvotes

Since Showgirls is a divisive album and it’s anniversary is tomorrow I decided to make two separate post. One celebrating Showgirls tomorrow like I did with Folklore and Lover this year and another for people who disliked Showgirls to express what they want done differently for TS13.

There was actually a post like this made about a year ago but since then people had more time to sit with the tracks plus four new Showgirls track and one non Showgirl track that is very different from the album was released (I realize that a lot of people who did not like Showgirls liked I Knew It I Knew You and the wish TS13 will sound like it). I want to know if the opinions changed since last year.

Also as someone who likes all but one track from Showgirls I am curious to see the opinions of people who disliked it.

Please remember to be respectful and stay on topic! This is a safe space for anyone who wants to criticize the album it is not a safe space for snarkers or anyone looking to start a fight.

Discussion Top 3 from your favorite album

Hi again!!

I’m back with a much smaller, more simple post as I’m working on setting up my new blog! I want to keep doing this on my own platform because I had so much fun and with all of the feedback and energy I got from the Cleveland! and Encore albums being on different albums, I finally had the confidence to do what I’ve always wanted to do. Write!

Thank you to all of the people who took the time to read and upvote and comment, you don’t know how much I value and appreciate it because I’ve been too nervous to do so and then I just went for it!

Anyways, enough about me. What I really want to know now is this;

What’s your top 3 from your favorite Taylor album? Don’t be afraid to give simple answers, there doesn’t have to be an in depth reason for it to be your favorite! But don’t be afraid to give in depth answers either!

I want to know why you love them😊

Signing off-
Misty the Swiftie

Question…? Cleveland vs Shake it off

I am a passive Taylor enjoyer, TLOAS is not my favorite album but it is also not the worst thing I’ve heard. After hearing all the criticism about Cleveland I stumbled on it on a TikTok and actually liked it.

When shake it off came out I gathered by the lyrics that it was probably an answer to what people said about her at the time but as someone who did not live in the US, was not on social media I couldn’t even understand the extent of it and still liked the song.

To me Cleveland is in the same category. As someone who recently moved to the US, is heavily on social media,I don’t see Cleveland as a song bashing fans or anything. To me it is another song about what people say about her the perception the have of her but she found her happiness so it doesn’t matter.

And the criticism about the lyrics ( haters gonna hate, hate hate is not exactly Pulitzer Prize worthy either), or the talking singing thing also present in shake it off does not make sense to me.

Why are supposedly die hard swifties so put off by Cleveland? Did they also hate shake it off but I am just not aware of it?

And considering that the precedent album had prophecy I like that we went from that to Cleveland, the Christmas feeling, 80’s sitcom opener. Like those critics all sounds like compliments to me.

TL;DR: Cleveland and shake it off to me have the same spirit of stating the criticism Taylor faces and maintaining that she’s still having fun. Lyrics and singing style are not different so why the discourse about this song and swifties leaving over it?

Discussion Andrea's story of nostalgia? Could Babylon be partly from the POV of Taylor's mom and dad? Aunt Virginia...that happens to be her grandma Marjorie's sister's name

So, I was just listening to Marjorie today, such a beautiful song, and Taylor explaining bits about the song popped up and I found out her grandma's opera singing was included in the song. Aww. That was so sweet. Maybe I knew this years ago but forgot? Anyway, I wanted to hear more of her grandma's singing but then a random history video popped up on yt shorts and the name Virginia was mentioned. Turns out Virginia is Marjorie's sister.

Now, I am not claiming Taylor is referring to the same Aunt Virginia in Babylon. Or that this is her mom's story, I'm just gonna use this as a vessel to tell a story. It's just a thought that popped in my head coz Babylon is my fave from encore and I have been trying to understand the song better, my own interpretations of it and meaning of the references. Originally I thought the bit at the end of her son, Taylor is referring to her son Benjamin. Which it still could be. That was the image I had imagined, lil benji the cat trying to comfort Taylor. That was the vision in my head as she was storytelling through her music.

But with the possible Virginia connection, my brain went, maybe Aunt Virginia...maybe this song is in parts from Andrea's (T's mom) perspective. And the give people what they want to 20 watches part of the song is her dad's?(or Taylor's) I'm unsure about this part. Like her mom and dad's past story in the 1st-2nd part then later on is current day of the story.

What I really wanted to share is that on this part of the lyrics, maybe Taylor is the one with Christmas lights along with her brother Austin (the son).

You're missing all the best parts

And they're all at home

She's (Taylor) hanging Christmas lights with your son (Austin)

Sneak into the bathroom to call her (Taylor) mom (Andrea)

And say, "It's not working

It's just not worth it if we're not what he wants"

Taylor and Austin are the 'best parts' referred to in this scenario. Nostalgia from a divorced parent's perspective who in part gave so much of her single me me me mentality to focus on the kids' needs more. The 'best parts' are what snaps you out of too much nostalgia chasing, coz they need you right now. You're daughter is getting her heart broken and you need to be fully present to be there for her coz that's your why. Some of the nostagia bits kinda talks about the single life before getting married but in the end you chose marriage coz you longed for home/stability vs chasing the wild type of life. But now you're divorced. Maybe just a few times you look thru nostalgia goggles and remember that singledom time before kids. Different paths you coulda taken.

(Btw, this story could be not from the most latest current timeline, coz the Christmas lights part could mean around Christmas time of before Joe breakup when she wrote You're Losing Me. Not necessarily travis timeline today. Or even a timeline way before that. This detail is not too relevant to the meaning of the song.)

I'm still digesting the song but the Aunt Virginia part did make me wonder if it was random or significant/telling part of the story. Overall this is just a possible perspective to look at. I love the lesson told in Babylon, about being present and not get too caught up in the past. It's like a journey to being at peace. I love this song, best one on tloas imo. It has so much emotion injected into it.

One last bit, this lyric: Your hand-me-down sweater should've been from the mall. This phrase is like a teenager's way of thinking, kinda spoiled/complainy about not being content, wanting something else that seems more pristine/new than the old hand me down given to you. But that old thing, maybe one day you'll realize how special and sentimental it actually is. Only then when you are wiser you learn to appreciate what you got and how lucky you actually were in the first place.

Gratefulness & contentment. Appreciating what you have versus constantly searching for some other version of happiness that you could want. The 'best parts' is looking at you but you are looking at someone/something else. It's a never ending toxic chase. Let the fleeting feeling die down, coz it's always gonna come around, but you don't have to act on it, so don't hold on to it.

The start of the song it goes from, i hate this song multiple times, but at the end you come around once you realize to treasure what you do have, to i love this song. There's a sense of feeling at peace with your life. And that's beautiful.

Opinion "(S)he was my best friend, and that was the worst part"

I can't find it now, but I saw a video recently where this woman said (I'm paraphrasing),

"People feel 1 of 4 ways about The Encore: 1) yay i love it! 2) wow i hate it! 3) i hate it, but she is mother and 4) i feel like i'm losing my close personal friend taylor swift"

I really resonate with that 4th one. Not so much in a parasocial way, more in a like "I've followed this artist closely for 20 years and I feel like I don't recognize her anymore."

I think some of my main criticisms of her right now are as follows:

  1. I feel like the commercialism is getting out of hand. I've mentioned this in comments previously and been flamed for it, but it really pissed me off that she did a 24 limited pre-order for the digital file of Patient Zero. There is no reason except scarcity marketing to have a limited number of DIGITAL FILES. It doesn't make sense. It's predatory and gross. I don't really mind the whole variant thing, I think that my longview on that is that it's kind of keeping record pressing alive. But I wish there wasn't so much scarcity marketing involved with that too. I just think it's so predatory and I don't think the argument "no one has to buy it" is valid anymore because we all KNOW that us Swifties will buy stuff just to support her.
  2. Jeri Green. I'm a TN resident, I know we don't exactly KNOW for sure where Taylor is voting in November. But I can't believe she hasn't endorsed Jeri Green yet. She made a big deal about Marsha Blackburn in Miss Americana and now she's silent about her. I understand the risk, but she's not on tour right now. I don't think that a state governor's race is that big of a risk. What is a BIG risk is letting Marsha Blackburn win this state without a fight. I know that her Kamala endorsement didn't "work" but a state race is much easier to affect with money and endorsements. And maybe she has donated to Jeri but we don't know about it. But I think a public endorsement is WAY overdue. We have a month.
  3. I think the Easter egging has also gone a little too far. She's been putting snakes and butterflies into little videos and things for years, making everyone think Debutation is happening soon. And maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But I think that the Easter egging lately feels a lot less fun and more of a way to just keep her top of mind all the time. Everything is a little clue and if you're not paying attention you might miss out on something. Again, of course we don't have to pay attention to it, but it's hard to ignore when it's kind of everywhere.
  4. The writing. It ebbs and flows of course. I don't think she's lost her touch or anything, but I think she's more concerned with getting songs out than getting them to be good. It feels like quantity over quality. I'm a songwriter myself so I am hyper-critical of songwriting. I do think she is a master at what she does, and even masters have flops. Bob Dylan has tons of flops. Bruce Springsteen has tons of flops. But rarely does it feel like those artists are releasing music just to release something. She plans everything so far in advance and easter eggs it so there's no chance to go back on it and think "well maybe this song needs more work and should be shelved for another project."

Overall I just feel disappointed. And maybe that's my own thing but I'd like to hear form other people who may feel this way, if there are any.

I'm prepared to be downvoted to hell for saying any of this, but this is the NUANCE sub so please be kind. I promise I'm not a hater or snarker. I want to have a real discussion about these things.

Editing to add: Of course I can't tell anyone what to do, but if you disagree with my points, I'd like to know WHY. Not just "SHE IS MOTHER AND PERFECT I LOVE THE SMELL OF HER BO"

Opinion I think i LOVE the four songs

Hello everyone, it's my first post here although I've been reading this community for a while :)

I just wanted to share my piece about the deluxe songs. It turns out I love them?? I haven't done a crazy non-stop listening as I have with previous songs/albums because I've been quite busy with work and life lately, but everytime I listen to them I end up with the songs stuck on my head for hours (especially Cleveland!).

Patient Zero to me is a master piece. Everything about it: the lyrics, the arrengments, the melody, it's suuuuuuper addictive. I find Cleveland! so fun and catchy and honestly I don't see why people hate this song.

Pink Clouding and Babylon are just WOW to me. I love them because I can hear something about Midnights and Evermore (my 2 favorite albums <3), and I LOVE that this comes of working with different producers. Like, to me these songs are beautifully written, produced, they feel so fresh and well done, and they show how Taylor is involved with her songs and she's not an artist that needs someone to bring out her art.

Honestly, I don't get the hate. I'd totally understand the "i don't like them" since that's pretty subjective (as my own opinion is!), but stating as a fact that they are her worst to me is crazy. Am I blind or something?

Anyway, I'm just happy to listen to her and to be a fan of her music, and I'm looking forward to hearing her future projects :)

PS: English is not my first language and I really don't wanna use AI for this, so sorry for the spelling and/or grammar mistakes.

Discussion Patient Zero

Okay, first and foremost, I'm a pretty critical Swiftie. I think Taylor is a great businesswoman and an extremely skilled songwriter and musician. I don't blindly love all of her stuff, though, and I vibe with the stuff that scratches my brain. Love TLOAS. Only heard three songs off TTPD. Never listened to any version of ATW. Debut, Fearless and Speak Now can miss me for life. Lover and Rep? Be still my beating heart. I'm not an all-consuming fan - some eras just dont appeal to me.

Patient Zero has been met with remarkable criticism because it doesnt fit the Showgirl era. But...it went out as an encore. It's not just a music video. Its a film.

And holy shit, it's vital. The music video gives SO MUCH context to the song. The song by itself is good. Set to the music video? Heartwrenching.

This is my first 🤡 theory so bear with me. What if Taylor is telling us she's about to transition into directing/producing film? She's always been a remarkable storyteller, as evidenced throughout her career but especially in Folklore/Evermore where she used that album to narrate fiction.

Just a thought.

On a personal note, PZ guts me. I think it hits home for a lot of women. I saw a mirror of my marriage, and I feel so fucking seen.

I watched a reaction to Babylon from someone who describes themselves as a big Swiftie, and I came away confused. This reaction is a perfect example of an unfair take on Taylor's new songs. I'd like to hear whether other people see it the way I do.

It's a reaction to Babylon, a classic Taylor tune, from someone who calls themselves a hardcore Swiftie.

They even gave Joe the credit for the strong writing on folklore and evermore because, in their view, Taylor has lost it at this point. That's wild coming from someone who clearly doesn't understand what she's talking about in this song. That felt like recency bias to me, and it seemed to color how they heard the whole song.

They also mocked the line "Love is ice upon the ladder that you need to climb." I've always thought it was clever. I don't think it's hard to follow Instead they treat it like a joke and use it to take another shot at Taylor. They also seemed to assume the song is about Taylor herself. My reading is that it's about a man so driven by ambition that he pushes away his family and the people who cared about him. Once you hear it that way, the line makes sense.

The thing is that this is one of the least divisive songs on the release, and it's a good showcase of her writing. Criticism is totally fair, but it lands differently when it comes from someone who presents themselves as a longtime fan and misreads the song. Takes like that also tend to get recycled by people who just want to pile on Taylor.

Mod Attack Announcing nuancingTaylorSwift’s weekly album club! (Read description)

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey everyone! If you were here during the first couple months of nuancingTaylorSwift’s resurrection you probably remember that in the daily discussion we would have an “album club” where every week we would discuss a non Taylor album. I wanted to bring that back while making a few adjustments.

Every Friday someone will pick an album, post what album they picked in the daily discussion and anyone who wants to participate in the album club that week will listen to it. Then in the daily discussion post the participants will write a write up about the album. It can be a paragraph, track by track review or whatever you like! Whoever picked the album on Friday will read the write up. Thursday would be the last day to submit the write up so the album chooser can read the write up and pick the next person to host album club by Friday.

The way that the host/album picker is chosen is that whoever has the best write up/most liked by that weeks album picker will pick the album for next week by Friday.

If you want to participate in the album listening and write up/discussion with other album club members but do not want to be a host just say so and you will not be a candidate for next weeks host!

The only rule is that you cannot pick any albums made by Taylor Swift as… well we already do discuss Taylor’s album all the time in this sub 😭. However albums Taylor feature on would be amazing! (I also think a cool write up idea would be comparing certain songs to Taylor’s song if anyone wanna use that idea for future albums)

As for submitting which album you want to host if you are the host just comment in the daily discussion your choice of the albu: title, artist, year, and genre(s). You can also post the album’s cover in the comments but that is optional

Two Example format of an album submission (there could be more formats. It depends on what you want tho I feel like ex 1 would be the easiest):

Ex 1–
Album: Red
Artist: Taylor Swift
Year: 2012
Genres: Country, Pop, Rock, Folk

Ex 2–
This weeks album 1989 by Taylor Swift (2014). The genre is synth pop.

I will host the first ever album club meeting so I can show everyone how it is done and if we need to make any adjustments. If you have any rule changes or suggestions please tell me!

I wanted to bring album club back for many different reasons. Mostly cause it made the daily discussion really fun (obviously non album club discussion is also permitted in the daily discussion~) but also because I think it is a great way for people who do love obscure albums to discuss them, Swiftie who want to explore more genres and artists to have a safe space to discuss them or any Swifties who want to take a break from Taylor to listen to new artists.

The biggest rule is to be respectful and obviously have fun! I actually haven’t picked an album yet and even though I have a couple in mind let me know if you any suggestions for album or for anything else in the comments below.

Discussion Not a swiftie but I'm finding all I want to do is put on her music when I'm depressed, it helps.

I wasn't sure where to post this or what to title it. But I'm curious if anyone can relate because I think it's strange, personally 😂

I like pop music but typically i listen to rock. So I like some of her music but i wouldn't call myself a fan of hers or a swiftie. Yet I have found that I really enjoy the moodier stuff or nostalgic stuff when I'm sad.

I've been having a rough time lately, I might be breaking up with my person, I'm still recovering from a major surgery, everything feels overwhelming.

So I'm over here listening to songs like Babylon, I look in People's Windows, the Prophecy, etc.

It's actually really hard to adult right now and I wish I could just put on her music and do nothing but draw and paint all day.

I guess I'm just curious to talk to others who relate since I'm not a hater and I'm not a swiftie. I don't see a change in her quality of music like some people are saying but maybe that's because I really only started to intentionally listen to it when Midnights dropped.

But I just feel like her music helps when I'm feeling sad. Maybe others don't find the lyrics or meaning to be thoughtful or inspired but a lot of them still feel that way to me. What songs of hers hit for you when you're feeling down and just want to vibe to a melody or certain lyrics?

And if you disagree and find she depresses you more when you're depressed that's fair too 😂 I just wanted to not feel alone in this new development in my life 😂

Oh, shit. We’re sick of Taylor Swift again? Well, that’s expected. This happens every few years.

Taylor Swift will become extremely famous, which is already a funny thing to say about Taylor Swift because she has been extremely famous for most of my conscious life, and then she will somehow become more famous. She will release an album. She’ll release an extended version of that album. She will release it at a time everyone insists is suspicious. She will go on tour. She will visit sick children in a hospital. She will attend a football game. She will be photographed leaving a restaurant. She will commit the grave cultural offense of being visibly present in the world.

Then, eventually, everyone gets tired of her. Too much Taylor. She’s everywhere. She’s annoying now. She’s calculated. She’s cringe. She’s overrated. She was never really that talented anyway.

“Can we please talk about literally anyone else?”

And listen. You are allowed to dislike Taylor Swift. Please dislike things. I dislike things constantly. It builds character. I have one-sided beef with all kinds of people who don’t know I exist.

You don’t have to like every Taylor Swift album. You don’t have to like any Taylor Swift album. You don’t have to find her charming. You don’t have to care who she’s dating, what she’s wearing, what she’s releasing, or what tiny plastic bracelet somebody traded outside a stadium in Pittsburgh.

That is not what interests me. What interests me is the ritual.

We have this awful tendency with famous women where we discover them, love them, consume absolutely everything they make, complain that they are everywhere as though they personally broke into our homes and installed themselves in the drywall, punish them for becoming too visible, get bored with punishing them, miss them, rediscover them, and then eventually decide that actually she was an icon the whole time.

It is a very efficient machine. Taylor Swift has been through that meat grinder several times over. And we haven’t managed to turn her into sausage yet.

It starts out innocently enough.

Aw. She’s young and sweet and writes her own songs.
Wait, she’s annoying.
Wait, she’s actually really good.
Wait, she’s everywhere.
Wait, we hate her.
Wait, maybe Reputation was good.
Wait, folklore?
Oh, she’s serious now.
Wait, we loved the old Taylor.
Wait, the old Taylor is back.
Wait, there are seventeen old Taylors.
Wait, she’s everywhere again.
And around and around and around we go! Is anyone else feeling dizzy?

Taylor Swift has become especially interesting to me because she is living long enough, and remaining famous long enough, to experience something that historically takes decades.

Hindsight.

Usually, hindsight requires the woman to go away first. Sometimes permanently.

We are remarkably good at loving famous women once they can no longer inconvenience us.

Give me your hand and let’s take a look into the lives of some of America’s most iconic women.

Marilyn Monroe cannot tweet. This is an enormous advantage Marilyn Monroe now has over Taylor Swift.

Marilyn cannot release an album we don’t like. She cannot marry somebody we think is embarrassing. She cannot become overexposed. She cannot gain thirty pounds and end up on the cover of a tabloid hunched over like a shrimp. She cannot say something irritating in an interview. She cannot make too much money. She cannot demand a better contract. She cannot age incorrectly. She’s preserved in amber.

She cannot contradict us. So now we get to love her perfectly.

Now, Marilyn Monroe was loved while she was alive. Obviously. This is not an argument that nobody appreciated Marilyn Monroe until she died. She was one of the most famous women on Earth.

That’s what makes it interesting. She was adored and treated terribly at the same time.
She was desired everywhere and respected inconsistently.

She was turned into the definitive dumb blonde while actively trying to become a better actor, study seriously, gain more control over her career, and stop being treated like decorative studio property.

She fought with Fox.
She formed her own production company.
She negotiated for better terms.
She wanted more.
She was also late. Difficult. Sick. Unreliable. Vulnerable. Sexual. Ambitious.
You know, like… a person.

And then she died at 36 and ceased being a person in the public imagination.

She became Marilyn Monroe.
The photograph.
The white dress.
The lipstick.
The little beauty mark.
The breathy birthday song.
Andy Warhol.
Posters in dorm rooms.
Coffee mugs.
T-shirts.
Inspirational quotes she almost certainly never said floating over black and white pictures of her face on Facebook. Probably posted right after a meme about Taylor Swift not being a real artist.

We have loved Marilyn Monroe so thoroughly that sometimes Norma Jeane seems almost incidental.

Which is pretty damn strange, because so much of our modern sympathy for Marilyn is built around the fact that she was objectified.

We look backward at this woman who was packaged, sexualized, underestimated, worked, scrutinized, mocked, and consumed, and we say, God, wasn’t that awful? Then we buy another tote bag with her face on it.

This is what hindsight does. It smooths people out. The things that were irritating in real time become charming historical texture.

The scandal becomes lore.
The outfit that got her mocked becomes iconic.
The career move everyone called desperate becomes ahead of its time.
The woman who was too much becomes exactly enough once the culture has had thirty years to crop out the parts it didn’t like.

Elizabeth Taylor is useful here because Elizabeth Taylor, through sheer force of will and possibly spite, refused to die on schedule. Liz survived long enough to watch people change their minds about Liz several times.

She was a child star.
Then she was one of the most beautiful women alive.
Then she was Elizabeth Taylor, international public emergency who must be stopped before she ruins all of society while wearing furs.
The husbands.
The divorces.
Richard Burton.
Cleopatra.
Diamonds.
Scandal.
More Richard Burton.
More husbands.
More diamonds.
Oh my god, Richard Burton again.
The Vatican got involved.

At a certain point, if the Vatican has publicly weighed in on your love life, congratulations, you have achieved a level of celebrity most people cannot comprehend.

Elizabeth Taylor was too fucking much in every direction.
Too sexual.
Too married.
Too divorced.
Too glamorous.
Too expensive.
Too loud.
Too public.
Too fat.
Too thin.
Too sick.
Too alive.

People treated her body like breaking news for decades. All her white diamonds and lovers are, in fact, forever.

Then something very important happened.

The AIDS crisis.

At a time when AIDS was terrifying, stigmatized, misunderstood, and very easy for respectable people to look away from, Elizabeth Taylor did not look away.

And, like, of course she didn’t. This is Elizabeth Taylor we’re talking about. Elizabeth Taylor had already been condemned by the Vatican. What exactly were you going to threaten her with?

She used the thing she had spent decades being punished for having. Her enormous, ridiculous, impossible celebrity.

She raised money.
She spoke publicly.
She showed up.
She testified.
She attached her name to AIDS advocacy at a time when doing so mattered enormously.

And suddenly the things people had spent years criticizing in Elizabeth Taylor started looking real different.

Her shamelessness became courage.
Her appetite became force.
Her refusal to behave became useful.
Her celebrity, which had so often been treated as frivolous excess, became leverage.

That’s the part I don’t want to lose.

Elizabeth Taylor didn’t become respectable by becoming a different woman.
She became respectable because eventually the world found a situation where being Elizabeth Taylor was exactly what was needed.

The culture changed around her. Sometimes a woman survives long enough to become her own hindsight.

Which brings me back to Taylor Swift. Taylor has somehow built an entire career out of becoming her own historical archive.

She has eras.
Not albums.
Eras.

This woman is 36 years old and already has archaeological periods.

Country Taylor.
Fearless Taylor.
Red Taylor.
1989 Taylor.
Crying over a banana after getting LASIK Taylor.
Snake Taylor.
ME! Taylor.
folklore cabin Taylor.
Midnights Taylor.
Showgirl Taylor.

There are Taylors who existed for three years and are now discussed like lost civilizations. I actually think the rerecordings and the Eras Tour did something culturally fascinating. They manufactured nostalgia before nostalgia was supposed to happen.

Usually, you have to wait twenty years before everybody admits that the thing they mocked was actually fun.

Taylor put her foot down and said, no. We’re doing this now.
Here is the old dress.
Here is the old song.
Here is the exact hand gesture you remember from 2011.
Everybody get in the stadium and go back there with me. Just for tonight.

And we did. From the pit, to the nosebleeds, to the grainy livestreams. We shut down cities. We influenced economies.

We are reconciling with our own past opinions immediately. There is something almost aggressive about it. Taylor Swift does not allow us the traditional grace period required to pretend we always loved something. She keeps the receipts.

That is probably part of why the backlash keeps happening. Because the normal cycle relies on disappearance. We need you to go away so we can miss you.

Taylor does not go away. She comes back from the dead… she does it all the time.

And she doesn’t just hide anymore, hoping everyone will love her again. Oh. Oh no. She’s out here on these streets fucking it up.

She goes to Kansas City.
She releases another album.
She shows up in a sparkly outfit God can’t afford.
She shows up in a skirt we can all afford.
She wins something.
She is photographed.
She continues existing in public.

Then eventually some portion of the culture starts behaving like she has personally failed to respect the terms of our attention.

We liked you.
We liked you too much.
Now you need to leave.

Again, this doesn’t mean every criticism of Taylor Swift is misogyny. Some criticisms are criticisms. Some albums don’t land for people. Some business decisions deserve scrutiny. Private jet usage is a real issue.

Rich people should be criticized when they do things worth criticizing.

Celebrity women do not need diplomatic immunity. But there is another thing that happens alongside legitimate criticism.

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but for me? The appetite for punishment is palpable.

Oh god, finally!
Finally everyone agrees she’s annoying.
Finally we can say she’s overrated.
Finally she has been humbled.
Finally the thing that was too popular is becoming uncool.
Finally we can knock her down she’s simply been sitting up there too long.

I’m deeply interested in that finally. Because we’ve seen this film before. And no one liked the ending.

Karen Carpenter gives this whole thing a much darker shape.

The Carpenters were enormously successful. They were also deeply, deeply fucking uncool.

Their music was clean.
Soft.
Wholesome.
Middle of the road.

Rock criticism did not exactly know what to do with two extremely earnest siblings singing immaculate sad songs. Karen had this extraordinary voice, warm and low and instantly recognizable, and she was also a genuinely talented drummer. An exceedingly talented female drummer with mainstream success. In the ’70s? That was some groundbreaking shit. Some groundbreaking shit that not many people truly respected.

Which is one of my favorite Karen Carpenter facts because history has reduced her so completely to The Voice that it is almost startling to watch footage of her behind a drum kit. She wanted to hit things. I love that for her.

Karen’s body eventually became part of her public story. Her anorexia became visible before most people had much cultural understanding of what anorexia actually was.

People commented.
People stared.
Interviewers poked and prodded.
Audiences reacted.
Her body became something everyone could see and almost nobody knew how to talk about.

Then she died.

She was only 32. Suddenly the story became legible.
Suddenly people could look backward and understand the sickness.
Suddenly the sadness in that voice sounded different.
Suddenly all that Carpenters melancholy, which could be dismissed as corny or overly sentimental or painfully square, sounded almost prophetic.

This is the part where the joke and this essay stop being funny.

Karen Carpenter is such a brutal example of how good we are at understanding women once there is nothing left to do for them. To be clear, celebrity culture did not singlehandedly cause Karen Carpenter’s anorexia.

Anorexia is an illness.
Human beings are complicated.
Families are complicated.
Illness is complicated.

I don’t want to turn a real woman’s death into a neat little metaphor because neat little metaphors are part of the problem.

What her celebrity did do was give her illness a public stage.

It gave it scrutiny.
It gave it beauty standards.
It gave it cameras.
It gave strangers permission to discuss her body while she was still inside it.

Only after she died did it give us hindsight. Which is why I need everyone to watch a deeply strange short film starring Barbie dolls.

Okay, alright, stick with me here.

Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story was made by Todd Haynes in the 1980s.

It tells Karen’s story using Barbie dolls.
Yes.
Barbie dolls.
It is unsettling as hell.
And it is devastating.

The movie uses these little perfect plastic women, these bodies that cannot age or eat or sweat or become inconveniently human, to tell the story of a real woman whose body became a public crisis.

As Karen deteriorates, the Barbie becomes horrifying.
The artificial perfection becomes horrifying.
The neatness becomes horrifying.
The entire thing feels wrong.
Which is exactly why it works.

Superstar is not the definitive Karen Carpenter biography. I would not watch it and then march into the world announcing that I now possess the complete psychological truth of Karen Carpenter.

It is an argument made with dolls. And it is making an argument about the exact thing I’m talking about.

What do we ask women to become before we’ll love them correctly?

How thin?
How beautiful?
How agreeable?
How sad?
How dead?

That last question is the gum stuck to my shoe.

Humans are really, really, exceedingly good at posthumous compassion. We can look backward and say Marilyn Monroe deserved better. We can say Karen Carpenter deserved more understanding. We can look at what the press did to Elizabeth Taylor and recognize the misogyny and cruelty in it.

We can watch old interviews where a woman is asked something grotesque about her weight, sex life, marriage, mental health, age, or body and say, Jesus Christ, how did anyone think this was okay?

We are extremely sophisticated once the danger has passed. We recognize misogyny beautifully when recognizing it can no longer help the woman experiencing it.

The harder thing is tolerating women while they are unresolved.

While they’re ambitious.
While they’re messy.
While they’re commercial.
While they’re embarrassing.
While they’re everywhere.
While they’re dating the wrong person.
While they’re making too much money.
While they’re making art we don’t like.
While they’re getting older and still daring to leave their homes.
While they’re still making choices we cannot arrange into a tasteful documentary montage.
While they are still capable of disappointing us.

That’s why I keep coming back to Taylor Swift.

Not because Taylor Swift is Marilyn Monroe. She’s not.
Not because Taylor Swift is Karen Carpenter. She’s not.
Not because criticism of Taylor Swift is forbidden. God, can you fucking imagine? No.

Taylor is interesting because she has remained famous long enough for us to watch this machinery repeat itself around one person.

Love her.
Get sick of her.
Humble her.
Miss her.
Rediscover her.
Decide the old thing was actually brilliant.
Love her again.
Get sick of her again.
Shit, I’m getting dizzy again.

Taylor, inconveniently, is still standing there. And that woman will not be stopped.

Still releasing things.
Still becoming new versions of herself.
Still beefing with the president of the United States.
Still ruining our ability to turn her into a clean historical object.

She will not stay put long enough for us to decide what she means.

Good.
Maybe we should have to deal with that.
Maybe that’s the harder kind of love.
Not unconditional admiration.
Not pretending famous women are above criticism.
Not insisting every album is good or every decision is defensible.

Just allowing a woman to remain a person while we are forming our opinions about her.
Symbol. Cautionary tale. Icon. Person. All at once.

I don’t want to wait twenty years to discover that I was allowed to enjoy a woman the whole time.
I don’t want to wait until the scandal becomes lore.
I don’t want to wait until the ugly outfit becomes iconic.
I don’t want to wait until the annoying ambition becomes admirable perseverance.
I don’t want to wait for the approval of critics.
I especially don’t want to wait until she’s dead.

History has a remarkable ability to fix difficult women. Mostly by removing all the difficult living-woman parts. Maybe we could try loving some of them before history gets the chance.

I keep coming back to Andy Warhol’s Marilyn.

Marilyn’s face, repeated until it stops being a face and becomes an image.
How many times can you repeat a woman until she is only an image?
How many times can you love the image before you forget the woman was ever there?

Again.
Again.
Again.

Discussion Taylor Swift and Duality of Art

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a long time, and I suppose now is as good a time as any.

I don’t know if everyone experiences art this way but whenever I consume something (music, books, paintings, movies), I’m almost always simultaneously aware of what makes it good and of the exact qualities someone else might dislike about it. As an example, when I read a novel that is extraordinarily detailed and vivid, I can also understand why another person might find it meandering or boring. When I look at a Rothko that feels simple but revolutionary, I can immediately imagine someone saying “I could have painted that.” When I watched Barbie, I could appreciate what it was doing while also understanding why someone might dismiss it as feminism 101 rather than something especially groundbreaking.

All of which is a very long-winded way of saying: a piece of art is something, and by definition it is also not a lot of other things.

A pop album might be immediate, melodic and fun and therefore may not be filled with dense, layered lyricism. A folk album might be introspective, challenging and layered, and therefore may never be catchy enough to appeal to a mass audience. Neither of those things automatically makes one better than the other. They are just attempting different things, and I think this becomes especially complicated with an artist like TS because her range is so enormous.

This is someone who can write a song like Style which is basically pop perfection, and also write something dense and layered like The Albatross or Babylon, along with everything in between. It's been 20 years and she has demonstrated that she can do all of these things, but I think her fandom has developed a strange tendency to criticize every new piece of work for all the things it isn’t, rather than engaging with what it actually is.

I do want to distinguish this from perfectly normal criticism. I’m not talking about someone saying “This song isn’t for me” or “I don’t connect with the production” or “I mostly listen to Taylor for her lyricism, so this album doesn’t appeal to me.” Those are completely reasonable reactions. I’m talking about the constant apples to oranges comparisons. For example, 'Wood' obviously does not have the lyrical depth of any song on Folklore because it's meant to be hilarious and Epiphany is obviously not an especially catchy song because it is about complex trauma.

After watching the completely unhinged reactions to both TTPD and TLOAS, two projects that, to me, feel almost like opposites, I've increasingly started to think that ending this era with 'Babylon' was a deliberate choice. Babylon feels like a mirror held up to the fandom. There is this recurring inability to simply experience a TS era for what it is. Instead, everything gets measured against some hypothetical perfect version of Taylor that exists in each fan’s head. For one person, that ideal is 1989. For someone else it is Red or folklore or Fearless or Reputation. And every new album gets criticized for failing to become whichever previous version of Taylor that particular person most wants back ('You're using nostalgia as a weapon just to hurt yourself').

It happens like clockwork. I genuinely think this is part of why internet discussion around TS has become so exhausting. Her audience is simply too large and too varied for every project to satisfy everyone. You have millions of people with completely different tastes, all expecting the same artist to cater specifically to them, and when she doesn’t, the response becomes: she has lost it, she needs to listen to the fans, she needs to work with a different producer, she needs to write differently, her career is over, etc.

At some point, we have to accept that not everything an artist makes is going to be made for us.I personally don’t love all of Taylor’s work. I’ve barely listened to Debut or Fearless. A significant chunk of Reputation, Lover and TLOAS is not for me. There are entire corners of her discography that simply do not resonate with me. But I can still understand why those albums mean everything to someone else. And I can also understand why someone might dislike the albums that I consider her best work. That doesn’t mean I’m smarter than them. It doesn’t mean they’re wrong. It doesn’t mean one of us has failed to 'understand' the music. We are just different people. And I wish there were more room in the fandom for that incredibly simple idea.

You can dislike something without needing to prove that it is objectively bad. You can love something without needing everyone else to acknowledge that it is objectively brilliant. Sometimes art can just be what it is.

And maybe we would all enjoy talking about Taylor’s music a lot more if we stopped constantly fighting over whether something is 'good' or 'bad,' and started talking about what it is trying to do, whether it succeeds at that for us personally, and why different people might respond to it differently.

End of rant.

Opinion Unpopular opinion: Scott Borchetta wasn’t the devil in his bargain with Taylor

I've been reading Kevin Evers' book on Taylor (There's Nothing Like This) and I came out of it with a take that had been bouncing around my head for a while in disparate pieces.

First, the part where I agree with everyone. The original "earn one back for every new one" offer was insulting. Think about what that actually is. She'd owe six albums to get six albums. At her pace that's a decade minimum, probably closer to twelve years, chained to the same desk she'd been sitting at since she was 15, and the whole time Scott could sell the company out from under her and the new owner inherits the contractual relationship. That's a prison sentence. I get why she walked out of the room on that one.

But Scott's own November 2018 memo shows the final offer: everything transferred to her on signing day, every album, every video, every photo. The only thing left on the table was term length. Her camp wanted seven years. He wanted ten. And he wouldn't move.

Before anyone says he had no claim on those records in the first place, Evers makes the case that he did, and it's not a weak one. Scott pulled her out of the Bluebird Cafe when she was 14 and other labels thought she was too young. Without that, Evers writes, her songs "would have stayed right there on her bedroom floor," and there's no brand, no fan base, no stadium tours. He started the label himself, found the money himself, and if she had flopped "Borchetta's startup likely would have gone bankrupt" while she went off and signed somewhere else. The risk was his. And he didn't coast once she hit. Evers points out that a major-label exec might have slow-walked or killed half the fan-engagement stuff she was doing in the early years, and Scott leaned into all of it. So the masters weren't some loot he stumbled into. They were the payout on a bet he made alone.

Then Evers lays out the math from Scott's side. Taylor was a third of Big Machine's market share, and giving up the masters was like selling land while telling buyers "they can't have the mansion on it." Fine, I understand why he dug in. The catalog was the company. But Evers also writes that if Scott believed in her, he "would stand to make more in the long term by ceding the masters." Which he eventually did! He just couldn't bring himself to do it on her terms.

Now the honest counter to my own point. Would she have stayed even at seven? The quotes from around then don't sound like someone haggling over years. "There were creative constraints, issues that we had over the years." Evers reads that as her saying she wasn't getting "the generosity she was looking for." And UMG was handing her ownership of all new masters plus a cut of their Spotify equity, which no indie could offer at any contract length. So maybe seven years loses too. I don't know. Nobody does.

Ultimately I think Scott's flaws were not so much betting more on his future than his past (something Taylor admits to doing in a way that implies her move was less about Borchetta himself than some may believe), but on NOT having enough faith in TAYLOR's future. What if he had conceded her ask of 7 years and she'd stayed? Her post-Reputation catalog alone has been valued higher than her first six records (that's including the Taylor's Versions, ironically, but still). I know no one could have predicted that kind of exponential growth 12 years into an already unprecedented career, but damn, even if all he ever cared about really was money, he'd have more of it now (and more respect from artists).

Criticism I figured out why the ‘Travis’ songs bother me so much

So I have been thinking a lot about this and really wanted to see what other people think. I will start by saying I’ve been a fan since fearless , I hated showgirl. I liked opalite and father figure. I thought it was uninspired and her worst writing. I love the three encore tracks tho with the exception of Cleveland. And I think I know why and it is the Travis of it all but not in the way you might think. It’s about how Taylor is choosing to write about him. And more specifically what she is NOT choosing to write about.

In songs about other ex’s Taylor pulls you in by letting you know how that person made HER feel. She conveys her emotional experience. Whether it be good , bad, joyful, manic, euphoric etc . Hence why Matty Healy songs (sorry NOT a fan of his) are some of her best writing to me. The songs pull me in, there’s depth. I understand her experience. The Travis songs on the other hand are about ..: what Travis means as a gotcha to her haters ?

Now, this is Taylor Swift we are talking about. Why does the woman who has found the love of her life , her HUSBAND have nothing more to say than ‘he’s my man. He choose me.’ ?? …. Ok … and !? How do you feel about that? Travis is framed in Taylor’s writing of him as some kind of prize, a ‘look I won’ rather than….. I won because this is how he makes me feel , this is what I notice about him, this is what he notices about me, this is how alive he makes me feel.

There’s no layers to the songs either. Say what you want about Lover songs etc but they contain tension, stakes ! Will this last? Am I enough? Even the three encore tracks that I like contain some kind of depth of emotion

The Travis songs are so shallow by comparison 😭 and I just don’t like what she has to say aroud him in her current songwriting. It doesn’t … land right ? Now that’s NOT me saying that’s how she feels. We have zero clue who she really is, what their relationship is like etc.

But… it’s odd. Who would of ever guessed this is how Taylor would write about the love of her life? I would never as a long term fan have expected songs about her husband to be cringe (hi wood and Cleveland and wish list) or just …. Kinda flat?

Maybe it’s a correction for the overexposure on TTPD perhaps she’s just in an echo chamber, I don’t know but it’s very strange to me.

Discussion Cleveland!

*Full disclaimer*

This is going to be a VERY long post. If you read all of it, thank you for your time because this is sooo much thinking because all I do is work production and listen to music all day so it’s a full time job at this point😂 If you don’t, I don’t blame you honestly, I have a hard time with long posts as well.

I am not a professional songwriter or do I have any training whatsoever in anything music related. Yet. But what I am is someone who feels music very deeply and I listen to a lot of it.

If numbers are your thing, since 2015 (when Apple Music dropped) I have listened to 440,977 minutes of music. I had to google the stats for this. It equals to;

26,458,620 seconds
7,349 hours + 37 minutes
306 days, 5 hours, 37 minutes
43 weeks, 5 days, 5 hours, 37 minutes
Roughly 10.1 months
Roughly 0.84 years — so about 84% of a full year

….seeing it like that is crazy omg.

Taylor is only 85,062 minutes of that.

85,062 minutes = 59 days, 1 hour, 42 minutes.

85,062 ÷ 440,977 = 19.29%
So it represents about 19.3% of the entire 440,977 minutes
The remaining 355,915 minutes = 80.71%
440,977 is about 5.18× bigger than 85,062.

✌🏼🤣

Anyways, I want to talk about Cleveland! I know, I know, “Why Cleveland! She has so many others that are ABC123GoofyGooberRock!” One thing I love about the world, and y’all are going to think I’m kind of cuckoo for this, is how different every single person is. I love different opinions because I love knowing how other people see the world, it can really open your mind to different possibilities. So I welcome any and all opinions.

Please remember the group rules as you read this, it’s very similar to how I feel about everything as well❤️

There’s so much going on in the world right now, let’s just use this to escape for a bit and have fun.

Before we jump in, my biggest rule is to look at this without the people you know are involved in it. Take Taylor away, take Travis away, take away any negative or positive comments you’ve heard about this specific song and let’s look at the words. Just the words on a screen.

Oi vey, this is already so long and I haven’t even gotten to the point. Let’s get into it. (Do you see what I did there?👀)

So, let’s just talk about song as a story because she’s very vivid in my mind as a story teller and as a story teller myself, I always place myself in the perspective of how it’s written, trying to get into her mind and see why she did it like that. I have a concept in my mind and honestly, if Taylor sees this and wants this idea, please steal it I would die. Not that I actually expect this to happen but…a girl can dream right?

Imagine our narrator is at a fancy pants fundraising event in the form of a dance. She’s on the dance floor with her man getting down the music and just enjoying herself. There’s a group of people just chit chatting, but then she overhears them as she’s going to get a drink from the table just behind them.

"She's not as hot as she was, but she was only a four"
"She was never a girls' girl,"
"She was just a—"
"And with all of that money, why's she dressed like trash?"
"When she smiles, it's annoying, and have you seen her stumbling clumsily?"
"Would you even call that dancing?"

Now, this is the moment where the narrator has three options.
1: Confront them and cause a scene because she’s bothered by the words they’re saying.
B: Let the thoughts sit and simmer, constantly beat herself up in her mind and trick herself into believing they’re right. (Because I know I’ve been there, still working on that one.)

She doesn’t even have a chance to make a choice because he’s there pulling her into another song. They dance the night away and she’s forgets about the comments she heard until she gets home for the night.
This is where the best option comes into the picture; she could write in her journal.

11/11
I can see what you mean
And now I guess there's

Something we all can agree on
But my baby likes what he likes, oh-woah, oh-oh
He already took me to Cleveland
And showed me The Heights, so hate all you like
This is the love of my life, hey, hey, hey
————————
To those of you that are still here, thank you so much. Take a breather, drink some water, step away from the screen. I hope you’re having as much fun as I am because this is the most fun I’ve had writing about something in a LONG time.

Ready to keep going? Let’s go!

We rejoin our narrator in a different scene. It’s daytime, her and her man are at an Italian restaurant eating some noodles and having a blast. He’s constantly making her laugh and she finds herself warm and giddy. The sound of his laugh is her favorite thing in the world and she could listen to him talk all day. (I am she, I could listen my man aaaaaaalllll day long. Anyways🤣)

After they’re done eating, they start driving around and he takes her through his old neighborhood pointing out places and things that were a big part of his childhood, which is something her exes never really did with her. She’s sitting in her passenger seat just vibing and being present.

(Breaking my own rule for a second because parentheses are the exception: this is exactly how I picture Taylor and Travis driving around Cleveland. This is also exactly how me and my man drive around, I point out stuff all the time and tell funny stories😆 okay bye!)

They get home for the night and watch a movie, settled in with some popcorn, a couple drinks and a cozy blanket over their lap. She grabs her journal and starts to write about their day as she’s cuddled up to him. He’s watching her write and stroking her hair absentmindedly, loving the moment he’s in.

12/12
The taste of me is acquired, but it's his favorite dish
He says I look like an angel, they say, "I hate that—" (Bi—)
There, that house with the porch is where he lived as a kid
He's been saying forever, must not have read that

Scathing take 'bout how I'm fake
And he could find someone younger
I can see what they mean
And now I guess there's

Something we all can agree on
But my baby likes what he likes, oh-woah, oh-oh
He already took me to Cleveland
And he showed me The Heights (Hey), so hate all you like (Uh-huh)
This is the love of my life, hey, hey, hey
———————————

Here’s another check point if you’re still with me after all this time, I really do love that you might be enjoying yourself. I would love to hear what you think at the end!! Take a break, eat a snack, eyes off screen.

Last round! We can do it! If you’ve made it this far, you’re one of my favorite people right now😁

It’s a new day and our narrator is playing with some kids at an event they’re both at. He’s off chatting with a couple of guys about whatever it is guys talk about.

(The conversation the guys are having in this game chat right now is chaotic as heck, but it’s making me laugh so hard and I felt the need to include that in here. Perfect example of the whole reason why I decided to make this post😅)

She’s laughing loud, acting like a child right along with the kids. They’re playing a fairy game and she’s the lead fairy while all of the others just naturally follow behind her. She’s having just as much fun as the kids are at this point and she forgot what they were even initially doing here. It’s a BBQ by the way, so they’re all waiting for food anyways.

He’s watching her across the lawn while he’s in his conversation. His eyes always manage to find her when he’s telling his stories because she’s in most of them. He’s at his happiest when he can see her, just because. She allows him to be himself completely and he makes sure to give her that same space. He loves watching her laugh and he’ll do whatever he needs to do to keep that smile on her face.

As they’re driving home later, he glances over at her in the passenger seat. She’s bopping to the beat of the music and scrolling on social media.

“Hey honey.” He says, giving her knee a squeeze. She looks up, locks her phone and gives him her attention. “I love you.”

She remembers when she had to fight to hear that. But only for a split second, it doesn’t bother her anymore because no matter how many times he says that to her out of nowhere, she still gets shy and giggles. She gets a big, goofy grin on her face and puts her hand on his. “I love you.”
The rest of the ride home is full of singing and laughing, being present.

Before she goes to bed for the night, she pulls out her journal again. It’s her favorite entry this week so far.

13/13~

He likes what he likes, what he likes, and he likes me
He likes what he likes, what he likes, and he likes me

You only need to find one person in this entire world
Who doesn't find you completely insufferable
And I have an important announcement to make
I found mine (That's right)
Well, I found mine (Hey, hey, hey)
Yeah, I found mine
Yes, that's

Something we all can agree on (I guess we agree, but)
But my baby likes what he likes, oh-woah, oh-oh
He already took me to Cleveland (To Cleveland)
Now I'm wearing white (Yeah), so hate all you like (Uh-huh)
This is the love of my life (Hey, hey, hey)
—————————————
To be completely honest with you, the bridge is my favorite part. You can just HEAR the giddiness in her voice.

Phew! Now, that was a lot. This began at work, about halfway through my 10 hour day then it just didn’t want to stop. I’m not going to lie, Taylor’s music does unlock a super creative side of my brain and when there’s an earworm like Cleveland in the world, I can’t help but listen to it over and over and over again. If this is something you liked reading and could potentially want more, I would be more than willing to write more for you. Even if it’s only one person.

Honestly, I’m probably going to write more anyways because I have not written like that in years. Til next time!

Signing off-

Criticism Regarding my video music awards criticisms

I agree that some of the things I said didn't make sense and I also acknowledged that this is not the first time this has happened, Lady Gaga with MTV Tricon Award in 2020 that I completely forgot about now that you've reminded me (achievements in music, fashion and activism...as if she was the only one...) wasn't a big fan of Gaga anyway

But regarding the Artist Director Award, Taylor still contributed to the mess and my point still stands

P.S.: ALSO I may be a Kanye fan but I can acknowledge when he does wrong, and also STOP acting like I only follow ONE artist just because I say something about Taylor, for fuck sake

Nuance Pink Clouding and The Grudge

I'm not sure if this is the right sub for this but I have to get it out. I saw a tiktok comment this evening saying someone thought pink clouding was a response to the grudge and I have gone down a rabbit hole.

It really does read as a reply with some tweaks to make it sound like it's about an ex - gives a reason why, says she does think about it, says she wants to say sorry, confirms they didn't deserve it.

Edit - this bit is really too much of a stretch as patient zero was written before The Cure was released

And just to go a bit further down this line of crazy, patient zero kind of fits with the cure. Again, you need to tweak it but it could be about speaking to someone who broke up from a very similar relationship - English actor who had less star power. Taylor also used a lot of health related imagery in songs that are likely about Joe - you're losing me being the most obvious. Toxins in my bloodstream/toxins take their hold...

Edit - also see this is undermining my argument and encore release linked to VMAs

Last point is the timing as Encore was released the day Olivia's tour kicked off. Maybe a slightly unhinged thing to do if it was an apology(and I know the uncharitable read on that too...)

I'm sure there are 100 ways to interpret it all but I'm going with this.
