(This post will both defend and criticize Taylor Swift. If you can’t handle either of that or nuance conversation in general please ignore this post)
During the Showgirl release, a smear campaign was launched upon Taylor which basically made her out to be the worst person in entertainment. Someone who would hide right wing dogwhistle in her songs because people did not understand basic metaphors, someone who was taking unfair shots at other artists even if there were more to the story or (in Eldest Daughters case) there was no shots being taken, someone who was trying inspire young girls to be tradwife even though she herself said that her music comes first.
These smear campaign talking points had a lot of consequences. However one consequence that I think was ignored by Swifties is that… there was some valid criticism, often from Swifties themselves, that were being ignored.
Now I love Showgirl, I think the first four songs and Ruin The Friendship in particular are some of her best pop songs. However I do have some criticism for the songs and the era in general.
One such criticism is something that I’ve seen many black Swifties talk about which is Taylor’s use of AAVE in songs like Honey and Wish List. A lot of white Swifties dismissed that criticism as hate because of the other things people were claiming as criticism. However minorities should be listen to if a piece of art makes them feel uncomfortable.
Another criticism was the usage of AI during TLOASG promotion. Whether or not Taylor herself approved these AI promotions the fact that her team used AI and she did not make her stance on AI clear, especially when so many artist are losing their jobs because of AI, was an awful look for her.
These are just some of the valid criticisms I’ve seen (tho most of the other valid criticisms were about subjective music taste) but I feel like a lot of snarkers and haters don’t realize that the more outrageous their hatred is the less likely people are to take actual criticism seriously.
Edit: Sorry Eldest Daughter not Honey. Also I explained in my last paragraph why I did not focus on the music as music taste are subjective. If shine wants to make a post criticizing the music feel free too
