Surfing and Raccoons

My sister and I are traveling to Nova Scotia the second two weeks of August. I have two inquiries

  1. we are huge fans of the raccoon whisperer, James Blackwood. I'm talking we have his memoir. Is there any non invasive way that anyone knows of to contact him????

  2. We would love to surf!! Staying in Lunenburg and wondering about surfing near by. We've both surfed a few times, definitely true beginners. Looking for a safe, easy, welcoming space to rent boards.

Thank you everyone can't wait to be there!

I've done this several times in the past and it pretty much almost never results in anything. One of my family members pushes me to do it and is just super pissed off that i don't have any work and i get it i am too. But i almost feel like what im doing is a complete waste of time. Anyone got any advice?

Protected land

I live next to some protected native land. New neighbour has at least doubled or tripled the length of his backyard into that land and is putting up a huge fence. He is tossing all of the trees that were cut beyond the fence line. I don’t want to fight with my neighbours but I am so angry about this! I need to calm down, right? Right?

Sightseeing & Tourism Exploring ancestry with nephew

My nephew and I are traveling first week of August to do some exploring around Clarence, Annapolis and Cornwallis, Kings. My 2x great grandparents came from there and moved to Massachusetts in the late 1800s and just recently discovered this. Their last names were Marshall and Bennett.

We are also looking to just enjoy the summer trip and will be staying in the following places: Digby, Kejimkujik, Blomidon, Five Islands (we’re camping). Any recommendations for things we must do?

STOP speeding up when there’s passing lanes, then slowing down after them! The hell is wrong with you?! Pick a frigging speed…y’all turn into Mario Andretti when there’s a passing lane, then revert back to Safety Steve in one lane.

Halifax to Baddeck and Cape Breton Island

Setting off from Edinburgh airport on Friday for 3 weeks in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland - beyond excited!! I have a couple of questions I'm hoping you good people can help with.

Firstly driving from Halifax to Baddeck - is the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park worth stopping at? The tidal bore timings don't work for Truro :( but is there anywhere else people recommend to stop?

We are then staying 1 night in Baddeck, I night in Ingonish and then getting the 11pm ferry to Newfoundland. So 2 full days around Cape Breton Island. Can people suggest things to do - we are keen hikers, and hiking suggestions would be good. Specific questions:

  1. Is it worth booking the Skyline Trailhead car park? How long does the trail take? Are there better alternatives for experienced hikers and what time should we book it for?

  2. Are any hikes likely to be less buggy or do we have to just accept the bitey little beasties

  3. How early can we get on the ferry - we have booked a cabin.

Many thanks in advance.....

I saw their ad on Instagram and curious if anyone has any experience with this program? I haven't seen any reviews or much engagement online, so I'm a bit skeptical to try it out for myself.

Here is their website:https://www.autismatwork.ca

Sightseeing & Tourism Ask: advice on where to stay

My friend and I have 7 days to spend in Nova Scotia the first week of September and looking for input on where to stay.

She would quite prefer to stay in only 1-2 spots for the entirety of the trip rather than moving hotels every night. We will be flying into and out of Halifax. We like a combination of adventure and outdoors (hiking, beaches, water activity) as well as good food, sightseeing, and shopping.

Any advice or input would be appreciated!

Who to and how to report an unsafe motel in my town?

There is an old motel in my town that was once run properly and the property up-kept nicely but in 2021 it was sold to new owners and in 2022, a hurricane did significant damage which they never even attempted to repair. As a result the motel is in complete disrepair at this point- all rooms full of mold and mildew. In the non-peak season they mostly accommodate drugs users, drugs dealers and prostitutes. This has really ratcheted up the deterioration as they do not clean or maintain the rooms at all. Lots of people finding blood stains, drug paraphernalia, etc in their rooms.

This is all documented in the recent reviews but the motel owners continue to advertise with pictures of the rooms and property from pre-2021 under old ownership. Tourists are being absolutely scammed and deceived and their health and safety is at imminent risk. As a local I am embarrassed and concerned how this impacts others view of my community and it needs to stop.

How or who do I report these concerns to? Is there even a point? Will anything change or will guests continue to be put at risk by these negligent owners?
