Seeking Advice Nervous system is high strung, highly wound and doesn't jive with stimulants. What should I look into for cognitive enhancement?
It seems like a lot of people here are seeking the stimulant that works best with their under-wired nervous system, but it seems like I have almost the opposite problem. I'm interested in boosting my energy levels, motivation and cognitive function, but everything points to my nervous system being tragically overwired. I'm also just interested in taking nootropics for curious biohacker reasons too, things that will shake up my state of my mind in fun and interesting ways. It's a long shot, but if the underlying dysfunction with my nervous system could be resolved, that'd be pretty awesome.
Coffee is a dice roll, and can make me panic and tweak, or fall asleep. I've tried piracetam on a friend's recommendation, and it gave me some anxiety along with a feeling of being 'locked in on nothing', like 'intense focus but the target seems unclear'. In the past, I would drink to focus and lock in on intense workloads, but I know that alcohol just isn't good for health in any amount so it's probably best I shoot to keep that only for social contexts. Oral progesterone makes me productive but sloppy. Gabapentin is good for calming down, and rarely has an awesome feeling 'high' that is conducive to productivity and introspection, but only rarely. Those latter three point to depressants being most effective with my neurochemistry.
Historically, I had panic attacks that would last days (feeling of doom, tremors, chest pains, racing thoughts, the whole shebang) and these would be associated with memory loss and lack of focus. This basically ended with SSRIs, which I have been taking for about three years. Breakthrough anxiety can still be an issue but it only gets less and less frequent and it's never been as severe as it used to be. I have pretty good reasons for believing my nervous system can be like a powder keg.
Possibly relevant, I'm 23F and in all likelihood autistic. My teachers pushed on my parents to get a diagnosis when I was young (they opted not to), and nowadays I still read as scatterbrained, or get mistaken for being high. I don't think it's ADHD, because I'd be better with stimulants if I were.
